Cardiff boss Malky Mackay made his fourth foray into the summer transfer market yesterday afternoon with the acquisition of Steven Caulker from Tottenham. The 21-year-old centre-half joins the Bluebirds on a four-year contract for a reported club record fee of £8m and follows Andreas Cornelius, John Brayford and Simon Moore to the Cardiff City Stadium as Mackay strengthens his squad after last year’s Championship-winning campaign.

The deal represents something of a coup for the Welsh outfit – Caulker was linked with a move to Liverpool, with former Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers interested, while the departure of William Gallas from White Hart Lane had suggested he could be pushing for regular game time under Andre Villas-Boas in the season ahead. In an interview with the club’s official website, the defender went on to say:

“First and foremost I want to say how happy I am to have signed with Cardiff City Football Club. I’m delighted to be here and excited for this fresh challenge. I spoke to the Gaffer yesterday, liked what he had to say and am excited about the plans he has for the Football Club. You get the sense of excitement from everybody at the Club in the build-up to the season’s kick-off at West Ham and I’m really looking forward to being part of it. I thank Tottenham for everything they’ve done for me, having been there since I was a kid. But I’m here to back myself up now and show what I can do. This is a fresh start, a new chapter and I’m here to kick on.”

The History

A product of the Tottenham youth academy, Caulker’s career started back in 2009, when, over a season-long loan, he made 44 appearances and produced a pair of assists at Yeovil Town. The following year he was farmed out temporarily once again, producing two goals and a couple of assists over 29 appearances for Bristol City, winning the club’s Young Player of the Year award.

In 2011/12, Caulker was again sent out on loan but this time he remained within the confines of the top-flight, moving to newly-promoted Swansea. His game time was somewhat curtailed at the Liberty due to a knee injury, though the centre-half still managed 26 first-team appearances and provided a single assist during his time under Rodgers. With Younes Kaboul picking up a long-term knee injury in Gameweek 1 last year, Caulker was retained by Villas-Boas in his debut campaign at the helm and was afforded 17 starts and one sub appearance for the north London outfit, returning two goals and a pair of assists.

On the international stage, the centre-half has turned out for England Under 19 and Under 21s a total of 18 times, finding the net twice, and has scored in his only appearance for the senior side, netting in a 4-2 friendly defeat by Sweden last November.

The Prospects

While his installation at the heart of the Bluebirds back-four will certainly afford Caulker a far greater security of starts at Cardiff, his comparatively costlier price tag across most Fantasy games is a real deterrent. Initially listed as a Tottenham player in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he comes in at 5.0 – less budget-friendly than any other likely starter in Mackay’s defence; Andrew Taylor, Mark Hudson and David Marshall are all 4.5, while fellow new boy Brayford is expected to mirror the trio’s cost. Caulker’s arrival raises real question marks over 4.0 priced Ben Turner’s place in the XI given that Hudson, as the club captain, should retain his starting role alongside the former Tottenham man.

Granted, the Bluebirds arrive with the best clean sheet record (18) of the three promoted teams and Caulker’s presence at the back is a real boost but with cheaper or similarly priced options offering greater defensive potential elsewhere, he’s likely to struggle to pick up any FPL suitors. In the Sky Sports game, though, the price is less of an issue – he comes in at 5.2 to Hudson’s 5.0, though a cost of 2.5 in The Sun Dream Team, compared to Hudson and Taylor at 1.0, is again likely to ensure he remains off the radar.

From a Tottenham perspective, Caulker’s departure now leaves just Younes Kaboul and Michael Dawson to battle it out for the role as Jan Vertonghen’s central defensive partner. Both come in at 5.0 in FPL and have the potential to afford us a decent value option – with Vertonghen struggling to shake off an ankle injury in time for the start of the new season, the duo could well be set to take their place for the Gameweek 1 trip to Palace and allow Villas-Boas to assess their respective form. Factor in a strong run of fixtures which sees Spurs face just two of last season’s top six in the first nine Gameweeks (cpl, SWA, ars, NOR, car, CHE, WHM, avl, HUL) and it’s clear that the Tottenham pair could barely be afforded a kinder platform to stake a case for consideration as the north London club look to push on from last term’s fifth place finish.

Soldado is a good shout I reckon - he'll definitely start for Spurs but at 9.5 there is better value out there.

Thoughts on my team please -

      Guzan/Boruc

      Coleman O'Shea A.Cole Collins Garrido

      Mata Hazard Walcott Silva Puncheon

      Dzeko Berbatov Weimann

Punchy is a risk IMO - unreliable game time towards the end of last season, and I can't see that changing.

Unless it is just for the DGW factor I would downgrade Mata and make improvements elsewhere.

    Foster - Boruc
    Sagna - Toure - Coleman - Collins - Chester
    Walcott - Hazard - Nolan - Mirallas - Schneiderlin
    Dzeko - Giroud - Benteke

2.5m still leftover......Giroud or Benteke may become Suarez or Rooney subject to transfer activity.

Nice team. Not convinced on Benteke. I don't care how good he was last season - 9.0 for a villa forward is just too much. Yes they have a DGW but two of those games are against top 4 sides.

    Some Soldado stats:

-5 goals in 15 appearances vs barcelona/real/atletico madrid in last 3 seasons

-27 yellows in 3 seasons, averaging 9 each year.

    - Longest goalless streak in the league was 8 games.

Here's my view.. A review on RVP we might say.. last year may seem like his best year but it was actually 2012 where he was Mr. Consistent.. Blistering form in 2012 continued to 2013 and up until December he scored in bunches when he wanted.. After which he sorta started fading with a fit Rooney in partnership to share his goals..

Step back another year and take into account the 2010 season and he had an amazing second half where he became first choice at Arsenal and scored most of his goals( &points) post December as a lone striker..

What we're missing is his form when not playing lone striker which is 2008 to 2010.. and also the new managerial system.. Now agreed that Moyes plays lone striker.. but over the last few years.. the "iconic" Everton system has always produced top top strikers like....... erm.. Yeah...
No offense to Everton but you'd find more consistent strikers elsewhere.. not better managers but better strikers..

Lastly.. and I know this is a punt.. but.. RVP has an evilly predictable (yes there is such a thing) tendency to continue where he left off and will score goals on the back of more goals i.e. snowballing.. he's known to be a slow starter too.. so he might be top scorer by GW38 but he wont be by GW5.. fixtures or no fixtures.. 14mil is not a risk worth taking when ownership is high enough to fit him in after five weeks of intense scouting..
which is why you just CANNOT start RVP imo..

But hey, dont let my opinion sway you 😉

In defence of Everton it's hard to get a decent striker when you only spend £5m a year or whatever it is.

This is more like it, something I can get my teeth into 😉 And yeah I think I generally agree with this...the benefits of going without seem to outweigh the risks. It's been said that if he rises in price by only 0.1m then it might as well be 0.5m you need to find; but the converse is also true. A 0.1m drop effectively devalues your team in the early stages by 0.5m. And I think, with his fixtures, that is the more likely outcome.

I must admit I'm not sure how the rise/fall system works exactly; so it's easier to drop?

I do know that folks are pretty impatient at the start of the season with big money signings. If he doesn't hit the ground running I think he'll drop pretty quickly.

If he starts well, it's going to be hard for people top get him in...so there may be a period of grace as people adjust their teams to accommodate him? Optimistic perhaps, I don't know...

It's a lot harder for a player with high ownership to drop than rise.

Ah thanks, that is a slightly important detail for me to have overlooked 😉 But yeah I think the fact that so many were looking to Bale to begin with as a cheaper main captaincy option suggests to me that even RVP's place in the hearts of the casuals isn't secure. FFS members who've selected him will likely stick by, but the sheep are fickle.

there's no question his finishing deserted him in the 2nd half of last season

a wonder goal v villa won't change my mind on that. i really think good fpl scores (that wonder goal hattrick game, penalties and dodgy assists) swept a genuine worry under the carpet.

    Evening everyone 🙂

If you're keen, feel free to join: 177189-154868

Plenty of good discussion lately and some new bandwagons being ridden, hopefully they won't all come back to bite you like Suarez (too soon? 😉 ). Anyway, I'm keen on Soldado if he's 10m or under, anything above that isn't worth it.

What I was interested in knowing was the preferred formations for everyone this season. Personally, I was tempted by the traditional 3-4-3, with a front line of Dzeko/Soldado/Lukaku, but if Bale stays, I'm very tempted to go 3-5-2 with Lukaku/Soldado/Gayle up front and then a midfield of Mirallas/Hazard/Bale/Walcott/Coutinho.

Would love to hear your thoughts and opinions on this, thanks lads 😀

Just got back in, and seen a couple of posts regarding bale, and ZERO RMTs in which he is included. Is him to Real a done deal then, unless he fails on personal terms or his medical?

So many options emerging and still ages left before the deadline passes, I honestly haven't got a clue who I'm going to pick.

You'd expect the 4-3-3 for the season, probably Mata on the right and Hazard on the left. That leaves 3 spots for CM or CDM if they plan to just run with the lone forward. Probably Oscar, Frank/Essien, Ramires. Sound about right?

Disagree, I think that Lampard will be in and out and so will Lukaku based on opposition.

Final RMT, think i have it sorted for the first 3 gameweeks. What do you think?

    Cech

Zabaleta / Colins / Coleman - (Turner, Turner)

    Walcott / Mirallas / Coutinho / Hazard (c) - (Snodgrass)

Dzeko / Lukaku / Hazard (vc)

    Plan is

1 - use wildcard and get van persie after GW3
2 - use wildcard and get van persie after GW3
3 - use wildcard and get van persie after GW3
    4 - winning

Ronaldo and Bale, have you seen the match between Barcelona and Santos in the Club World Cup? Neymar was horrible in that game, and he might take a season to adjust. Bale is dynamite, he will settle in straight away.

that was 2 years ago and as well as being a one off game so mental to judge it was a one off game against a barcelona side who barely gave santos a touch

Leon Barnett joins Wigan from Norwich. He's a cb. Norwich don't have a lot of them left. Am wondering if they may use R. Martin there, especially with Bassong injured
