With plenty of clubs set to take part in friendlies over the next few days, Norwich were the only club on our radars last night. Gary Hooper bagged a brace as the Canaries snatched a draw against Braga, while elsewhere, Thomas Vermaelen is ruled out for the start of the season, Newcastle take a step closer to signing Bafetimbi Gomis and West Brom add to their defensive ranks with the capture of Uruguayan centre-half Diego Lugano.

Braga 2 Norwich 2
Chris Hughton rolled out a 4-4-1-1 formation for the Canaries’ trip to Portugal. Michael Turner returned to action for the first time this summer after a minor operation, while Ryan Bennett was named as part of a back-four which also saw new boy Martin Olsson feature at left-back. Robert Snodgrass started on the right as Nathan Redmond dropped to the bench for the first time in five matches, while Leroy Fer and Gary Hooper were also given the nod, with Wes Hoolahan tucking in behind the former Celtic man. Hooper seems to have wasted little time in carrying over his form at previous club Celtic – the new signing grabbed both the visitors’ goals before being subbed off as one of six second-half changes by Hughton. Ricky Van Wolfswinkel climbed off the bench at the break and partnered Hooper in a front two before the latter made way for Jacob Butterfield.

Prior to the game, Hughton revealed his delight after Turner had taken part in an open training session at Carrow Road the previous day. The Norwich boss also courted caution when discussing Seb Bassong, who has yet to feature this summer after he, too, underwent surgery:

“That’s probably the most pleasing one (Turner’s comeback). Michael has missed the majority of the pre-season, he’s been back in training now for over a week so it’s really pleasing to see him back…He’s (Bassong) had a very minor operation in the summer, which has set back his pre-season. We’re hoping he’s going to be training next week and for us of course it’s always that race to try and get him fit for that first game of the season. What is more important is that he makes sure he does his rehab in the right way because it’s very much about the whole season and not just one or two games.”

Hughton also made assurances over John Ruddy’s game time in the season ahead. The Norwich boss started Mark Bunn between the sticks last night but confirmed Ruddy will be his main stopper next time out:

““Yes, he (Ruddy) will be my number one. He is a quality goalkeeper. Last season was disappointing for him with injury but in Bunny we had someone who came in and did very well. That is another area you need competition, but John is a very good goalkeeper. The England is down to one person and all the players can do is perform well on a consistent basis to ask questions. I would expect any English player operating in the Premier League on a consistent basis to be knocking on the door.”

In Other News
Arsene Wenger rolled out a team news update ahead of Arsenal’s Emirates Cup match with Napoli later today. The Gunners boss revealed Santi Cazorla will feature for the first time this summer after an extended rest due to Confederations Cup duties with Spain, while Wojciech Szczesny is fully fit after a recent back problem prevented him from playing in each of the last couple of friendlies. The Gunners boss also spoke on the fitness of a couple of defenders, with only a fortnight now until the new season kicks off:

“Vermaelen is out for six more weeks [at least before returning to training] and Monreal will start [light] training on Monday. Vermaelen is developing normally but he has a stress fracture in his back which takes time.”

While Monreal’s potential return is likely to deter many from investing in Kieran Gibbs, with the duo vying for the left-back berth, Vermaelen’s absence is set to afford Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker the chance to continue the central defensive partnership established towards the end of the previous campaign. Given that Arsenal face only one of last term’s top six in the opening nine Gameweeks, the schedule affords them plenty opportunity to rack up the defensive returns and replicate the resilience that saw them concede just 37 times in 2012/13, the second most impressive backline in the Premier League.

Uruguayan centre-half Diego Lugano took to twitter last night to announce he has signed for West Brom. The 32-year-old rolls up to the Hawthorns on a two-year deal and follows fellow free transfer Nicolas Anelka to the club as Steve Clarke continues to be somewhat frugal with his summer spending. Given that Gareth McAuley and Jonas Olsson both missed just two games apiece over the course of the previous campaign, Lugano’s game time seems far from assured, despite his wealth of experience – we’ll have more on the new Hawthorns recruit in an upcoming Scout Report over the next day or two.

Reports indicate Newcastle are closing in on the signing of Bafetimbi Gomis after agreeing a fee with Lyon for the forward’s services. The French club’s president Jean Michel Aulas revealed:

“We have accepted the proposal of Newcastle, which is eight million euros (£7million), plus two million bonus. The agreement is now linked to the acceptance of agents’ fees. I understand that the problem is in the amount and manner of payment of commissions.”

Yet to make a single acquisition since the appointment of Joe Kinnear, the Magpies have so far been thwarted in their bid to bolster a faltering attack that scored just 45 times in 2012/13. They are believed to have pulled out of a bid for Darren Bent – leaving Fulham as favourites for the Villa man’s signature – but Alan Pardew is still keen on QPR’s Loic Remy, with a season-long loan deal mooted. With Papiss Cisse back in contention after resolving his dispute with the club, and Hatem Ben Arfa a viable option on the right of a front three, it remains to be seen just what system Pardew has in mind if he manages to snap up both Gomis and Remy before the transfer window closes on September 2.

If his loan performances for Leicester last season are anything to go by, he will get subbed on when Spurs are 1-0 up after about 70 minutes, lose the ball a few times, hit a few shots wide, and trudge off after the team has thrown away a winning position.

Genuinely not an impressive talent. /rant.

    The RVP argument (again)

It's all well and good having a nice looking RVP less team with a mass selection of heavy hitters for GW1 but by GW4 you will have to dismantle your setup to accommodate him. I for one don't think he is essential for the first 3 GWs and prefer my team without him, mainly due to the better defence I can afford.

    The common template

    Mirallas Walcott Hazard Coutinho
    Benteke Dzeko Lukaku

Obviously teams vary but just using this as a popular example. The initial plan for most was Aguero > RVP which seemed a no brainer considering the fixtures, I for one was in favour of this because you only have to make up 3m which could easily be Hazard > Snodgrass for example. This was until Dzeko came along, thus giving us ourt next highest priced striker being 9m for most, that is a 5m gap to make up, in some teams it's even more.

So that leads to 2 big hitters being downgraded eg Hazard > Snodgrass, Lukaku > J Rod for example. So after GW3 we are back to square one.

So is it worth the hassle?

With injuries/suspensions/non nailed on players (Dzeko in particular may need replacing) there is no guarantee your strategy will go to plan. It's a gamble, points may need to be spent.

There are mid priced midfielders who start with nice fixtures and could easily score as well as Coutinho for example, Sessegnon Nolan come to mind, Hazard > Coutinho or latest bandwagon could then be your transfer in GW2/3.

    Conclusion

Those who like to gamble or plan to wildcard GW3 start without him.

Those who like to play safe start with him.

Those who plan to go without him best of luck 😉

Pretty much agree with you here, but im starting without, just making sure i have enough to put him straight in. Im starting without simply because think i can get 3 better strikres in the first GW. Might do Lukaku (have 6 in the bank) and just put him on for GW2.

But it all depends on Rooney tho, at the moment i might go for Rooney over RvP..

I also think with no Bale or RVP to start with you can build a strong team leaving enough in reserve to get him with just a -4 hit.

I have looked at both, either way you are going to be dumping DGW players GW2 and GW3. I plan to get Soldado GW1 and change to RVP GW4. Hazard to HBA or Sissoko GW2. Perhaps a little hit GW2 to get Coleman in for Luiz. Something like that.

definitely starting with RVP as I can't see another big hitting striker so nailed on out of the top 4(5). It means a skimpy defense but it's not too bad.

I think a lot of this comes down to seeing how Utd go under Moyes.

A new manager, coupled with a tough opening set of fixtures (as bad as anyone in the league's) seems like a good opportunity to see how Utd's form shapes up. It's not a bad time to go without him, but if Utd do look amazing, then it will be worth it to shuffle things around to get him in for the long haul.

I.e. in the FPL it would be a little like

    Def - 3 x 4.5 1x4 1x 5

The sad thing is this arsenal team really have a solid core. The passion and desire to win which has been lacking for years is slowly coming through, none of our first team player's have wanted to leave which again hasn't happened or years and all that is missing is a a more solid spin, not necessarily players who will all start just putting pressure for places, adding another edge to this team.

      Solid core but no Keeper!
If Mr Wenger bought a top Keeper, i would think his team would do well.

A starting keeper, a defensive midfielder and someone to play behind/with/in place of Giroud.
Those are where we will need people who will slot into the starting 11.
A center back and utility player would be great to add squad depth.

I am starting to think he should be in their starting line up. Better than sigurdson.

So unless I've missed something it looks like Bale will play in Spain pretty soon. As a result I've gone over my team again, can someone please tell me what they think? Thanks:

Guzan (Foster) (I had Speroni and McGregor to be cheap but it seems like lots of people recommend that combination of GK? They seem to rotate well... except GW7&29 are not going to be good... Manchester hell...)
Mertesacker, Collins, Shaw (Parr, Chester) (classic cheapo defense)
Coutinho, Silva, Hazard (c), Walcott, Mirallas,
    Benteke, Lukaku (Rodriguez).

I think I'd ship out one of Lukaku or Benteke for GW3. I'm undecided about bringing in RvP. On the one hand I feel like it'd be better to have him at the beginning because it's easier to get rid of him if he flops than bringing him in considering his price. On the other hand having him on really unbalances things I feel. Ideally I think I'd like to have a cheapo defence and 4 'premium' mids and 2 'premium' forwards, with one 'medium' mid and one 'medium' forward to easily be able to switch between 3-4-3 and 3-5-2 depending on the circumstances. So Ideally I'd avoid having any cheap forward or mid I couldn't count on to play and potentially score well. Does it make sense?

Anyway, of anybody could give me some feedback it'd be very appreciated. Thanks!

    A) Mignolet and Coleman

    B) Foster and Mertesacker

Other keeper is Boruc, no defenders from the teams above

Apart from having no RVP can you see any flaws with this?

    Mignolet Rudd
    ACole Collins Shaw Parr Chester
    Coutinho Hazard Silva Walcott Mirallas
    Benteke Lukaku Anelka

    Thanks 🙂

Yep, especially in GW1. Might have to bench Mirallas.

Wasting money that way though. I'd downgrade one of those mids (Coutinho IMO) to a 5.0 and then upgrade the defence/forward.

Anelka's not that good. I like it, same mf and main 2 strikers as my team.

Even if Anelka is "not that good" he's still the best striker on West Brom. Shane long is wasteful when he's not injuried

Don't get me wrong, I think Anelka is a great 3rd striker but I wouldn't worry too much about benching him and playing Mirallas instead.
