With plenty of clubs set to take part in friendlies over the next few days, Norwich were the only club on our radars last night. Gary Hooper bagged a brace as the Canaries snatched a draw against Braga, while elsewhere, Thomas Vermaelen is ruled out for the start of the season, Newcastle take a step closer to signing Bafetimbi Gomis and West Brom add to their defensive ranks with the capture of Uruguayan centre-half Diego Lugano.

Braga 2 Norwich 2
Chris Hughton rolled out a 4-4-1-1 formation for the Canaries’ trip to Portugal. Michael Turner returned to action for the first time this summer after a minor operation, while Ryan Bennett was named as part of a back-four which also saw new boy Martin Olsson feature at left-back. Robert Snodgrass started on the right as Nathan Redmond dropped to the bench for the first time in five matches, while Leroy Fer and Gary Hooper were also given the nod, with Wes Hoolahan tucking in behind the former Celtic man. Hooper seems to have wasted little time in carrying over his form at previous club Celtic – the new signing grabbed both the visitors’ goals before being subbed off as one of six second-half changes by Hughton. Ricky Van Wolfswinkel climbed off the bench at the break and partnered Hooper in a front two before the latter made way for Jacob Butterfield.

Prior to the game, Hughton revealed his delight after Turner had taken part in an open training session at Carrow Road the previous day. The Norwich boss also courted caution when discussing Seb Bassong, who has yet to feature this summer after he, too, underwent surgery:

“That’s probably the most pleasing one (Turner’s comeback). Michael has missed the majority of the pre-season, he’s been back in training now for over a week so it’s really pleasing to see him back…He’s (Bassong) had a very minor operation in the summer, which has set back his pre-season. We’re hoping he’s going to be training next week and for us of course it’s always that race to try and get him fit for that first game of the season. What is more important is that he makes sure he does his rehab in the right way because it’s very much about the whole season and not just one or two games.”

Hughton also made assurances over John Ruddy’s game time in the season ahead. The Norwich boss started Mark Bunn between the sticks last night but confirmed Ruddy will be his main stopper next time out:

““Yes, he (Ruddy) will be my number one. He is a quality goalkeeper. Last season was disappointing for him with injury but in Bunny we had someone who came in and did very well. That is another area you need competition, but John is a very good goalkeeper. The England is down to one person and all the players can do is perform well on a consistent basis to ask questions. I would expect any English player operating in the Premier League on a consistent basis to be knocking on the door.”

In Other News
Arsene Wenger rolled out a team news update ahead of Arsenal’s Emirates Cup match with Napoli later today. The Gunners boss revealed Santi Cazorla will feature for the first time this summer after an extended rest due to Confederations Cup duties with Spain, while Wojciech Szczesny is fully fit after a recent back problem prevented him from playing in each of the last couple of friendlies. The Gunners boss also spoke on the fitness of a couple of defenders, with only a fortnight now until the new season kicks off:

“Vermaelen is out for six more weeks [at least before returning to training] and Monreal will start [light] training on Monday. Vermaelen is developing normally but he has a stress fracture in his back which takes time.”

While Monreal’s potential return is likely to deter many from investing in Kieran Gibbs, with the duo vying for the left-back berth, Vermaelen’s absence is set to afford Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker the chance to continue the central defensive partnership established towards the end of the previous campaign. Given that Arsenal face only one of last term’s top six in the opening nine Gameweeks, the schedule affords them plenty opportunity to rack up the defensive returns and replicate the resilience that saw them concede just 37 times in 2012/13, the second most impressive backline in the Premier League.

Uruguayan centre-half Diego Lugano took to twitter last night to announce he has signed for West Brom. The 32-year-old rolls up to the Hawthorns on a two-year deal and follows fellow free transfer Nicolas Anelka to the club as Steve Clarke continues to be somewhat frugal with his summer spending. Given that Gareth McAuley and Jonas Olsson both missed just two games apiece over the course of the previous campaign, Lugano’s game time seems far from assured, despite his wealth of experience – we’ll have more on the new Hawthorns recruit in an upcoming Scout Report over the next day or two.

Reports indicate Newcastle are closing in on the signing of Bafetimbi Gomis after agreeing a fee with Lyon for the forward’s services. The French club’s president Jean Michel Aulas revealed:

“We have accepted the proposal of Newcastle, which is eight million euros (£7million), plus two million bonus. The agreement is now linked to the acceptance of agents’ fees. I understand that the problem is in the amount and manner of payment of commissions.”

Yet to make a single acquisition since the appointment of Joe Kinnear, the Magpies have so far been thwarted in their bid to bolster a faltering attack that scored just 45 times in 2012/13. They are believed to have pulled out of a bid for Darren Bent – leaving Fulham as favourites for the Villa man’s signature – but Alan Pardew is still keen on QPR’s Loic Remy, with a season-long loan deal mooted. With Papiss Cisse back in contention after resolving his dispute with the club, and Hatem Ben Arfa a viable option on the right of a front three, it remains to be seen just what system Pardew has in mind if he manages to snap up both Gomis and Remy before the transfer window closes on September 2.

Any Sunderland supporters on? I wanna find out whether you think Wes Brown is going to be O'Shea main defensive partner for this upcoming season, he has been beast in pre season, if not, who do you think? Also whats going on with regards to the Gino Peruzzi deal? is it definitely down the tube?

Avoid the entire Sunderland squad until September.
Whoever you pick, Di Canio will sign another player.
      They are all risks.

I chose QPR players last year.
Like Sunderland, they were signing and selling 100s of players.
I signed Rob Green. New signing he was. Former first choice at west ham. Seemed safe.

In came cesar on deadline day.
          Hughes. Di Canio. Avoid.

    Right,

Boys and Girls (and those as yet undecided) this is only my 2nd RMT so be gentle:

    Migs (Davis)
Zabs / Coleman / Clyne (Parr / Chester)
Mirallas / Hazard / Coutinho / Walcott (Brady)
    Tekkers / Lukaku / Hooper

    Bank: 3m

    My main thought processes being:

    - Bale is going
    - RVP no at the start.
    - The MCI front 8 is such a minefield I'm banking on Zabs CS's GW2-3.
    - Tekkers is immune from fixtures.
    - Hooper is a goal machine and I prefer him over Snoddy.

The rest of the team is template.

Yes, it's 3m in the bank at the start and I realise I have 3 DGWers.

So maybe I'll use the ca$h to strengthen the team in GW3 when I'm in deep sh*t. Or not.

    What have I missed?

Why else would Hughton have signed RvW, Fer and Hooper? And let Pie-Boy go?

I'm not because I don't want to double up on Saints (or any) defences until we work out who looks solid. No need really when there are plenty of options at his price.

Someone please rate my midfield and forwards (I'm pretty confident on my defense)...

Coutinho, Silva, Hazard (C), Walcott, Mirallas
Benteke, Lukaku (V) (J-Rod on the bench for GW1).

Peanuts in the bank. I realize this is pretty standard. I think I'm pretty set on Coutinho, Hazard and Walcott and will just bench Hazard on GW3. Silva I'm not sure, I guess he's nailed on, but will he improve on last season's form? Mirallas is OOP and has kind fixtures overall, but I'm open to suggestion for an equivalent player I can bench or play depending on whether I'm playing 3-5-2 or 3-4-3. Benteke and Lukaku I'm not quite sure. Tough fixtures for Benteke, Lukaku not nailed on... who's a good alternative to Lukaku? I feel that Bony would be good from GW3 and on...

You know, I just made a rough calculation of your front 8, comes out to be somewhere around 67.5 mil. That means you've invested just 32.5 in the back 7. Assuming at least 9 million invested in your gks, I don't think 23.5 is a very good investment at the back. Can't be sure how you're so confident about it..

As for the front 8, you'd be benching at least 6 million every week, and the next cheapest would be 7.5 (Mirallas), that's a lot of funds wasted at the bench. I'm not really sure mate..

Dang, you're good! I didn't want to talk about my back line! 😀 Anyway, thanks for putting some thoughts into it. I got Mignolet / Marshall, and Mertesacker / Collins / Shaw / Parr / Chester. You're nailed on on the costs. I've gone for a cheap defence. I think GKs are OK. Probably could invest more in defense but I'm reluctant to be honest. Maybe upgrade one of Collins or Shaw?

Mmh... so you're saying go for one really cheap either mid or forward and always play the same formation? I thought my way was more balanced...

That's what I do, and most do really. Try to get in a cheap player, there might be a chance that you may hit the jackpot. And, I'm just a believer of having maximum funds in the starting 11, and benching as less as I could. I am also not sure about Shaw/Parr/Chester rotation, though the keepers are just fine.

Thanks. Southampton and West Ham rotate together, and Crystal Palace rotate with Hull. All 4 have decent fixtures for quite a while, so...

How cheap are we talking about? Would J-Rod be considered a good bench player who can bring in points occasionally?

I think something around 5 would be cheap. Particularly in the midfield. Just gives you an extra 1 million which might be invested well in the defense..

Mmmmh, I'm still not convinced. Whatever I invest in the defense, I think there's a good chance it won't give me my money's worth. I may just leave it as it is. But thanks for the advice though. Frankly I'm more worried about the forwards. Potentially good for the DGW, but shit fixtures after that and I'm not even sure Lukaku is nailed on... I'm not sure I want to go the RVP route because that'll just umbalance everything...

RVP does unbalance it a bit I know, but he might be deadly and I know the pain when he scores a hat-trick and everyone has him captained and you don't have him..

23.5m can get you Mertesacker, Collins, Coleman, Clyne and Chester which is very solid imo.

Tbh, I'm not sure about Coleman still. Yes he might be OOP, but I can only see a decrease in Everton's CS potential under Martinez. And I don't trust any of the promoted sides to be good in defense, though I get your point.

I had double Arsenal defence for final 5 or 6 GWs. Sagna and Mertesacker, considering doing it again. Arsenal seem to have the more attacking defenders from a pre season and towards the end of last season point of view. I am going to see how my team pans out around this.

Starting to think this game is a lot more to do with luck than anything else. Do you captain the right player from a choice of 4 or 5 valid choices? I.e Torres home, Bale v Reading, Rvp v Wigan, Walcott v Villa etc. etc.

Do you start with the right punts and new signings? Aspas....anelka...Bony....Kone....Pony...Tony??? Who comes out flying? Some will pick the right ones, some will pick the ones who start slower.

Front three of Lukaku Benteke Negredo.........or...........Giroud Soldado Dzeko

Do your captain and your big hitting cb both get hurt during GW1 pre-match warmup??? Your biggest rival contemplated both, but went with Mata who does actually play in both games and gets 40pts at captain, and Koscielny plays and scores and gets 15 pts, whilst Mert is on the treatment bed?

    It's all luck lads.

    1st half team

    Davis
    Chambers-Lovren-Yoshida-Shaw
    Wanyama-Schneiderlin
    Ramirez-Lallana-Rodriguez
    Lambert

    2nd half team

    Boruc
    Chambers-Fonte-Hooiveld-Shaw
    Cork-Davis
    WardProwse-Do Prado-Puncheon
    Mayuka

Should we be concerned that Boruc is in the second-half team?
