Andre Schurrle and Kevin De Bruyne grab a goal apiece upon their return to action as Chelsea ease past Milan. Theo Walcott nets another for Arsenal, Stoke register their third straight win under Mark Hughes, Christian Benteke takes his pre-season tally to five in three games, while Andy Carroll remains optimistic of making West Ham’s opening day home clash against Cardiff.

Chelsea 2 Milan 0
Jose Mourinho retained a 4-2-3-1 formation against the Italian side in the early hours of this morning. In defence, Cesar Azpilicueta and Ryan Bertrand got the nod at full-back, with the Spaniard’s selection seeing Branislav Ivanovic move to centre-half alongside Gary Cahill. Marco Van Ginkel was again selected in the double-pivot, while Kevin De Bruyne recovered from a recent knee problem to start alongside Eden Hazard and Oscar in the attacking midfield three as Demba Ba was handed a chance to lead the line. De Bruyne made an instant impact upon his return and opened the scoring from a Hazard assist before he made way for Victor Moses in one of 10 second-half changes by Mourinho. The Blues sealed victory just before the final whistle after Romelu Lukaku teed up new signing Andre Schurrle to put the match beyond Milan’s reach.

On as a sub with 25 minutes left on the clock, the game was Schurrle’s first of the US tour after recovering from illness. The German’s superb volley – allied with De Bruyne’s opener – merely served a reminder of the number of midfield options Mourinho has at his disposal this season and the new boy was delighted to get off the mark for the Blues, after notching for the first time since moving from Bayer Leverkusen earlier in the summer:

“It’s a really nice feeling and it was important for me. I’m really happy to have scored my first goal, it’s pre-season but it always feels good to score. It was my first for Chelsea so it was a really nice day for me. The team played very well, we were concentrated from the first minute and it was a good match. It wasn’t easy because AC Milan are a quality side….It’s gone very well, we’ve played five games and won five games. Of course, nothing is perfect, but we’ve played well in every match. There are two weeks until the start of the season, and we will be away with our national teams for some of that time, but the team is looking good. It’s always good to win for the confidence and team spirit.”

Hazard’s pre-season displays have clearly had an impact on his new manager. Juan Mata and Oscar were handed extended breaks due to Confederations Cup duties and with Schurrle and De Bruyne spending time on the sideline, the Belgian has been afforded plenty chance to dazzle over the summer, with Mourinho full of praise praise for his performances:

“Eden has been with us from the start of pre-season and at the moment I’m trying to adapt Eden into everything I think a top player should have. For example, Hazard did some defensive work in the friendly against Inter Milan that he usually doesn’t. He is a top talent, but it’s one thing being a top talent and another being a top player. And I want him to be a top player.”

Arsenal 1 Galatasaray 2
Having played host to Napoli on Saturday, Arsene Wenger freshened up his first-team for yesterday’s Emirates defeat. Bacary Sagna partnered Per Mertesacker at centre-half, allowing Carl Jenkinson the right-back berth, Santi Cazorla was afforded his first action of the summer after his Confederations Cup exertions with Spain, while new signing Yaya Sanogo led the line as Olivier Giroud dropped to the bench. Theo Walcott grabbed the hosts only goal (his third of pre-season) thanks to a somewhat fortuitous effort but despite making five alterations in the second-half, the Gunners lost their unbeaten summer record due to a Didier Drogba brace for the visitors.

After the match, Arsene Wenger admitted a couple of his squad are on the verge of leaving the Emirates and also rolled out an injury update on Ryo Miyaichi:

“Gervinho is on a good way to Roma, and Chamakh is on a good way to Crystal Palace….He (Miyaichi) is injured. He has a crack in the rib that he got in Japan in the first game. He hid it from us because he was desperate to play in Japan. At the moment he is injured for two weeks.”

Wrexham 0 Stoke 1
The Potters registered their third successive win in Wales yesterday afternoon. Mark Hughes named Geoff Cameron and Erik Pieters on either side of Ryan Shawcross and Robert Huth for the third time in four matches and reverted to a 4-5-1 formation, allowing Peter Crouch to lead the line. Jermaine Pennant – unable to obtain a work permit to take part in the club’s US tour – started on the right, with Michael Kightly named on the opposite flank, though the pair made way in the second period as Hughes made nine alterations to his XI. Jon Walters replaced Pennant on the right and claimed his second goal in three appearances after slotting home from a Kightly corner – the visitors several missed opportunities to extend their lead but held firm at the back and have now produced a clean sheet in each of their last three matches.

After the match, Hughes talked tactics and admitted he expects his side to take a little time to become accustomed to a possession-based game, after years of the more physical approach favoured by Tony Pulis.

“We are a work in progress in many aspects, but that said I think the players have taken giant strides in such a short space of time. Today you could see passages of play which were good, but at the same time there were one or two things that we weren’t quite so pleased about. The week coming up as a big week for us, and one that I am really looking forward to. There are areas that we have to improve upon, and we will be looking to work on them over the next seven days. We can be better though, and we will be better once the players become accustomed to what we are looking to do. We have good players here and when they fully adapt I believe that they will cause teams a lot of problems.”

The Potters boss also confirmed Brek Shea is ruled out for the season opener at Liverpool after being subbed off with a leg injury in the final match of the club’s US tour:

“It’s not as bad as we first feared which is great news for us, but we will still be without him for a number of weeks. He certainly won’t be available for the first game of the season against Liverpool game, but the medical staff here are excellent and we can expect him to be back sooner than people think given the nature of the injury.”

Shamrock Rovers 0 Aston Villa 2
Paul Lambert’s side also picked up a third straight victory yesterday afternoon. The Villa boss again named Antonio Luna at left-back and was able to recall new boy Aleksandar Tonev in midfield, with the in-form trio of Andreas Weimann, Christian Benteke and Gabby Agbonlahor leading the line. Benteke played a part in both the visitors’ goals – he teed up Weimann for the opener before heading home the second courtesy of a Matthew Lowton cross and has now scored five times in three appearances since returning to the squad late last month.

Lambert made eight alterations over the course of the second period and while the Villa boss was happy with the victory, the return to action of both Tonev and fellow summer signing Jores Okore was equally important:

“The most important thing, which I have said from day one, is no injuries. It’s another game under our belt, another clean sheet and another win. We have one more to go which will be another test. But this is another game under our belt. Alex and Jores have been out for a month so for them to get 45 minutes is important. Yes, the two goals were excellent. But the most important thing for me was the injury situation. It was a game we looked pretty comfortable in. It’s another victory. We are getting there.”

In Other News
Andy Carroll remains confident he is on course to be ready for West Ham’s season opener against Cardiff on August 17. The forward has yet to feature over the summer due to a heel injury but speaking to the Hammers’ official website, he reckons he is in with a shout:

“I’ve been working hard. I’ve been away to Germany with the lads and keeping myself as fit as I can with the work I can still do with my heel still being sore. It’s been tough but I’ve been working hard to be back for the start of the season. I’m dying to get back kicking a ball again. I can’t wait because the last time I kicked a ball was in the final game of last season. Everyone is buzzing about and have come back in great form and great spirits, looking forward to the start of the season. They have been working hard over the summer and can’t wait for the beginning. It is always important to get a win in the first game of the season. Cardiff have just come up so will want to show what they are all about. We need to understand that and get a win under our belts.”

Understandably, Carroll has remained firmly off Fantasy radars as a result of his injury and has been snapped up by just 1% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers thus far. Given his relatively kind pricing across the Fantasy games – 7.5 in FPL – Carroll’s recuperation will be closely monitored by managers ahead of the campaign’s kick-off, with an opening schedule (CAR, new, STO, sot, EVE, hul) affording him the chance to rack up the points, should he prove his fitness in time for the Bluebirds’ showdown.

Malky Mackay has concerns for the Upton Park clash, according to reports. The Dane failed to feature in his club’s previous game after picking up an ankle injury in training and his manager admitted the new boy faces a race against time with less than a fortnight left until the campaign gets underway, with his potential absence likely to hand Fraizer Campbell the chance to lead the line. Craig Bellamy missed out with illness in the weekend win over Chievo but is expected to be back imminently.

“We’re working on him to get him back for the start of the season. I would be guessing right now if he will be fit for the first game but we still have two weeks.”

Still playing catch-up on the weekend's new...

Is Clyne's injury reason enought for us to be worried about him starting the season? They've only got one game left now and Shaw seems to be the next best bet, but at his age I'm not sure he'll be nailed on.

Hmmm, ok, thanks. Turner and Clyne were two players who were always going to be in my team, but they have both missed a lot of pre-season and I'm not convinced Olsson and Shaw offer the same secuity.

I'll probably start without a Norwich defender anyway and swap in for my outgoing Chelsea defender.

Martin is 5m though and I was looking at a 4.5m def from Norwich. If I were to spend that much on Norwich cover, I'd get Ruddy, Boruc and Toure.

Yeah. I'd be worried about him getting some gametime ahead of Shaw over the season. I doubt he'll be able to consistently start all season at his age. Look at Raheem Sterling last season for example.

I guess we can just hope he starts the opening fixtures and take it from there.

Shaw is every bit as nailed on as clyne if they are both fit and IMO from watching them week in week out shaw will provide far more attacking returns than clyne in the upcoming season. Fox will only be cover and is no threat to shaws game time. At only 18 he has a massive massive future and has so far shown more potential than either bale or bridge did at his age. He was the first name on my team sheet for this season at his price for what it's worth.

                Thanks for your views.

I've certainly heard a lot of good things about it, but it will remain to be seen whether his age and inexperience will count against him.

I imagine if Remy comes to Newcastle he'll come with a bigger price tag than he did at QPR last season considering Cisse is 8.5. Who knows though, my guess is as good as yours but I'd have a plan in place in case he doesn't come in at the price you'd hoped.

Chelsea defenders will be on fire this season with Mourinho so I see no issue with doubling up on them. I'd still rather Mignolet though then Cech due to price and then going with Luis/Terry/Ivanovic to partner Cole

I'm just not sold on Liverpool's defence with question marks over who will play CB/LB, whereas Chelsea under Mourinho are a defensive powerhouse and Cech/Cole are guaranteed to start each week.

I have done that, my 3xChelsea players are Luiz, Cole and Hazard.
Think you have to go for 3 which are most likely to play. (Was thinking of Cech instead of Luiz.)

Not crazy, but with Lukaku the potential is more explosive.

Also, you will be taking a hit to sell Cech and/or Cole, and since they will probably get 3-8 points, it's questionable whether it's not a better idea to just have 2 Chelsea players (1 defender and one attacker)

Sorry for the long post. Does anyone here start with a lot of cash in the bank?

I've always thought about it, but have never tried it. I might this year because of all the unknowns. I think the team below is decent, and keeps 4m in the bank for jumping on players rising in price without having to do transfers just to free up funds.

The only exception is if I want RVP, in which case Terry -> Coleman frees up the extra 1m.

    Boruc Mannone
    Terry Toure Collins Brayford Chester
    Hazard Walcott Mirallas Nolan Thomas
    Sturridge Benteke Lambert

    +4m in the bank.

Given the strategy, any comments on this team? I know it depends on Toure being picked and Sturridge being fit. Thanks

Bale would be the only one to tempt me but when you consider that Hazard will almost certainly get 4 points plus any attacking returns over the two games, you have to go with him as the safe bet, especially since almost everyone else will

    Which two would people pick?

Walcott, Coutinho, Gerrard, Silva, Jesus Navas?

I have gone Walcott and Coutinho but can see Silva behind strikers in a diamond/4-2-3-1 getting assists and odd goals, and Navas's width might pay off?!
    Gerrard on Pen/FK/Corner duty?

Walcott and Silva for me out of that bunch. I think Sturridge is better value at 9m than Coutinho, but Silva is the best option from MCY because of the likelihood of their strikers rotating a lot.

        Keep an eye on

Edin Dzeko has been told by the new manager that he’s first choice up front to start the season and he’s been in excellent form throughout pre-season.

Likely starting XI: Hart – Zabaleta, Kompany, Nastasic, Clichy – Fernandinho, Toure – Navas, Silva – Aguero, Dzeko.

yep and its making me rethink not having Silva in my team..

"Spanish schemer David Silva is likely to start from the left with license to wander across the field, in a similar fashion to his compatriot Isco, who Pellegrini nurtured so carefully and with great success during his two years at Malaga. "

if Silva adds goals to his game Isco-esque he could be huge this season

Gonna go through my team if anyone can give some advice

    Mignolet (seems the obvious choice)

    DF;
    Collins (good fixtures)
Dawson (not sure if he is nailed on?)
Hudson (cheaper than caulker, had a good season last year)

    MF;
Hazard (probably will see a lot of game time and reasonably priced)
Nolan (good fixtures, don't overly rate him but seems to get goals consistently but thinking of swapping for caybe or ben arfa)
Pienarr (.5 less than millaris but is he always gonna start?)
Mata (for dgw, will transfer to carzola, courthino or city player when I have a better idea of who is going to play)

    ATT;
RVP (a lot of money but most nailed on and consistent striker)
Dzeko (unsure of his playing time but cheap if he does play and looks sharp preseason, maybe a swap for lukaku but I don't wanna have too many dgw to transfer out and not sure if hell start)
Aspas (if sturridge isn't fit will he be main man for the time being?)

    Subs;
    Boric
Bellamy(listed as mid but is a striker but will he play?)
    Whittaker (best 4.0 def?)
Ward (unsure on palaces def but can't think of a cheap option)

Note; will make room for soldardo if he is less than 10

i would change whittaker to a 4.5 defender and change boruc to a 4 million filler keeper, it is rare that you will have boruc ahead of migs so why have that .5 million on the bench every week.

if you are not convinced on nolan why not go with snodgrass for .5 mill cheaper and that allows you to upgrade pienaar to mirrales who i think has more of an eye for goals and is set to flourish in his 2nd season. impressive so far in preseason.

as for the forwards i quite like them.... if you downgrade mata to coutinho or walcott you could upgrade one to sturride or giroud but you dont need to worry about that for a week or two i think.

Your thoughts on my team for GW1.

    Cech / Boruc
Toure / Collins / Clyne (Parr / Chester)
Hazard / Coutinho / Walcott / Snoddy (Thomas)
    RVP / Rodriguez / Lukaku

For GW2 I'm planning to swap:
    - Szczcszeny for Cech (Arsenal and Suthhampton rotate well, and Toure / Szczczczeny are .5 cheaper than Miggy/Mert)
    - And Rod or Lukaku for Aspas or Sturridge (depending on who looks better).

    Thoughts?

Benteke is the only attacker guaranteed 180 minutes in the DGW. Agree or disagree?

The more i think about it, the more tempted i am to just get him for the double. I think i'd be satisfied with an assist over the 2 games, or 1 goal at best. Striking options seem a minefield, and we'd get more clarity after GW1.

He's the DGW attacker that is the most likely to play 180 minutes.

I'm tempted to go for him instead of Lukaku, the closer it gets the more unsure I'm getting about his playing time. Aston Villa also did better on the road than at home last season.

Agree, well there probably is Weimall as well. I personally have gone off the Lukaku idea as well and narrowed DGW options down to BEnteke, Oscar, Hazard and defenders.

your right but if you want 3 Chelsea for the DGW then its going to be difficult to avoid hits for the blank. I think other strikers will score more than Benteke in just 1 GW

Yeah i'm still undecided about Lukaku. Could have both Belgians but it would mean hits, whereas it would be easier to manage 2 chelsea defenders and Hazard. Trick is knowing who those strikers will be. Other options are Giroud, Sturridge and Soldado currently.

I won't be doing that. Lukaku is a reasonable gamble, imo. Therefore Weimann is my Villa punt.

He is in mine and staying.

Might just bench him gw 3 and play him for NEW/nor/CITY/hull.

I can see him doing well.

I think I will be satisfied if Lukaku gets 90 minutes against Hull/Villa. Anything more is a plus! 🙂

Depends on your backup keeper, but the second option is probably easier to sort out

I AM ALL FOR PLAYING AN EARLY WC.

Even with that in mind, I would STILL suggest that the WORST time in the season that you should play your WC would be GW2.

After only 1 GW, you would, metaphorically, be ringing the changes for the other 37 GW's.

ONE week is not enough to establish any kind of form.

If you ignore the DGW, and those players score well, you have been set back just 1 GW, which can be retrieved when those players have a blank in GW3, without spending on transfers, or using your WC.

If you WC for GW2, you will regret it by the end of GW3, as the prices of all the form players will rocket during the international break. Likewise, the price of all the perceived flops will plummet.

And so, after only 2GW's you would be past the point of no return, all for the sake of chasing a few points from a DGW.

    YOU CAN'T UNRING A BELL

Of course, this post is only MY opinion, and a very humble opinion, at that.

Please feel free to agree, or disagree, by discussing, or simply by upvoting, or, indeed, by posting -1

Don't forget the Jan wildcard, so you're only ringing changes for 18 GWs

        KN,

I accept that there is another WC in January, but my point is that so much damage can be done to your team, PURELY to chase a few potential points from 2 teams having a DGW.

        There is no way back.

I agree, it is too early. You cant predict the form from one game, and I think it is important to have players in form.

Surely after GW2 results are in is the best time to play the WC, so before GW3 begins.
