In our next article on the Sky Sports Fantasy game we unveil a new contributor to the Fantasy Football Scout team. Luke Williams, or “d1sable” as he is known to the community, joins the ranks to add his expertise to our coverage of this game, having established himself as “Hot Topic” specialist in recent weeks.

In Luke’s first article, he analyses the available options in formation for our Sky Sports starting XI. Ultimately our intention is to ascertain which tactical set-up is optimal for giving our teams the greatest chance of success, whilst also assessing the potential need for flexibility in our approach.

Firstly, let’s look at the five highest scoring outfield players per position last season. Our objective here is to gain an idea of the spread of points available from defence, midfield and attack – a vital aspect to consider when selecting formation.

Sky Sports Top Five Defenders 2012-13

Name Total Points Price Points per £
Leighton Baines 154 7.1 21.69
David Luiz 143 6.8 21.02
Glen Johnson 135 6.5 20.76
Patrice Evra 132 7.9 16.7
Per Mertesacker 132 6.5 20.3

Sky Sports Top Five Midfielders 2012-13

Name Total Points Price Points per £
Santi Cazorla 262 6.7 39.1
Gareth Bale 238 8.8 27.04
Juan Mata 205 8.9 23.03
Steven Gerrard 192 7.8 24.61
Michu 182 5.5 33.09

Sky Sports Top Five Forwards 2012-13

Name Total Points Price Points per £
Luis Suarez 255 9.6 26.56
Robin Van Persie 250 10 25
Wayne Rooney 183 9.8 18.67
Christian Benteke 183 7.5 24.4
Dimitar Berbatov 182 7.5 24.26

As the tables highlight, the highest scoring defender (Leighton Baines, 154) scored just over 100 points less than the top midfielder (Santi Cazorla, 262) and attacker (Luis Suarez, 255). This won’t come as a shock to the experienced Fantasy manager: this tends to mirror most Fantasy games; it only serves to remind us where we should be spending the majority of our budget.

Another important point to note is that midfielders offered very similar returns to attackers but, for the majority of the time, at a reduced cost, as highlighted by their points per million. Obviously, costs have been adjusted for this season but with midfielders having a maximum value of 9.0 and attackers 10.0, your budget will be stretched that little bit further to acquire the services of the top attackers rather than the premium midfielders.

In terms of formations, Sky Sports offers you five different options: 4-4-2, 4-3-3, 5-3-2, 3-5-2 & 4-5-1. We have chosen to dismiss 5-3-2 and 4-5-1 on the basis that they seem slightly counter-productive, five defenders will surely limit our Fantasy returns and a formation with a single forward seems far too negative in our quest for goals. With that in mind, let’s cast an eye over the pros and cons of the three more offensive tactical set-ups and assess the optimum time to put them to use.

4-4-2

Pros

  • Flexible: if this season’s Michu or Christian Benteke crop up you can adjust accordingly to 3-5-2 or 4-3-3 with a single transfer.
  • You should be clear to acquire an expensive front two due to the cheaper prices offered in defence and midfield.

Cons

  • Having four at the back could hinder your overall points potential due to the relatively low scores achieved by defenders in comparison to midfielders and attackers.

Best time to use
Due to its flexibility, the 4-4-2 is certainly useful as an initial formation for the more cautious Fantasy manager.

4-3-3

Pros

  • Having three strikers clearly offers the potential for more goals.
  • Arguably, this formation also provides more captain options as you are more likely to hand the armband to an attacker.

Cons

  • If you wish to move to 3-5-2 it will take you two transfers.
  • Again, having four defenders is a slight risk due to the rarity of clean sheets.
  • Attackers come with a higher price tag and it can take a large chunk of your budget, potentially having a big impact on your midfield and defence.

Best time to use
This formation is most useful for the run-in. Perhaps the most efficient tactic is acquiring a big hitter in defence to cover the business-like performances from the top teams and a value attacker that has come to light from one of the lesser sides fighting for survival: they should be highly motivated whilst offering guaranteed starts.

3-5-2

Pros

  • Five midfielders gives you a higher chance to receive the bonus points on offer for completed passes and tackles.
  • You can field seven attacking players, more than any other system in the Sky Sports game as 3-4-3 is unavailable.
  • A three man backline means fewer players can lose points for goals conceded.
  • Midfielders offer the best points per price value.

Cons

  • If you wish to keep your current attackers but want to add a third in-form frontman and shift to 4-3-3, you need to make two transfers, replacing a pair of midfielders with a defender and attacker.

Best time to use
Most of the season, if not all of it, It’s pretty hard to make a case for any formation over the formidable 3-5-2, which could well be the default set-up for many of our teams.

Data suggest that this set-up should carry the most potential to gain Fantasy points, although as mentioned above, there is a small case for a shift in formation towards the season run-in to a 4-3-3. Of course, each season is different from the last and it’s important to back the in-form players regardless of their position. With an added 10 transfers this season giving us 40 in total and with no monthly cap, we should perhaps find it easier to be flexible and adjust our formation accordingly.

Fantasy Football Scout League

Once again, we’ve set up an official Fantasy Football Scout league for those playing the Sky game – we’re looking to defend our crown, having finished as top-rated league in 2012/13. If you fancy the challenge, you can enter with the pin 8000112 and with Sky offering a cool £1,000 for the winner of our official “FFScout†league, there’s every incentive to get on board.

Good team. Azpil more of a gamble than is necessary for me given the potential DGW returns of others.

I would suggest a few bob less in your defenders, and a few bob more on your strikers.

When is better to make WC. After GW2 or after GW3? Only between those 2, cause I am keen on using it early.

After GW2 means you can offolad all of your Che and Villa players cause they have blank and bring RVP in example.

After GW3 there is larger fixtures swing than after GW 2 and you have the international break. It won't be that boring for those 2 weeks, the transfer deadline has passed and you can react on some injuries.

    Thoughts..?
    Cheers

I fail to see what you learn after one GW of play to justify a GW2 WC that you should not already know pre-season? I will be holding onto mine for the long term.

For example the main issues this year seem to be who is be Chelsea and Man U's back 4, will any Man U Mid's turn into a monster and what will City's front line look like. The latter I don't think will ever fully resolve and just because a player starts one week its not them nailed on for the whole season.

      You put the WC water into a bottle it becomes the bottle;
You put the WC in a teapot it becomes the teapot.
Now WC water can flow, or it can crash.
Be the WC water, my friend."

@Christina, so you're saying waiting even for GW 4 to wildcard is waiting too long? I'm just trying to gauge people's opinion on when is the best time to wildcard. In past seasons, I have waited WAY too long to WC and I think I paid the price in terms of my overall rank. I want to WC as early as I can this season, preferably in GW 4. But now you're saying it is too long to wait even until GW 4 I'm somewhat concerned.

I have played my WC in week 7/8 over the past two seasons, after the international break. Hasn't done me any harm. Gives enough time to watch players hit form and still catch price rises.

Spot on. There's no "right time" it depends on how your team does. I've done it early the last couple of seasons, but that probably reflects more on my terrible starting choices than anything else!

What I will say though is that a good start is very important - if you're chasing a big gap from GW10 onwards you're going to make lots of dodgy decisions looking for a "differential"

Use it when you think you've got an opportunity to benefit from it.

1.) That they don't perform, for whatever reason.
2.) Whatever happens, Mignolet will get fewer save points, as Liverpool concede fewer chances, just as you say.

Too punty for my liking. I would get someone a bit safer in for Dzeko - and then if Dzeko still looks first choice after GW1, do Lukaku --> Dzeko for GW2. Giroud might be worth a shout as a safe option instead of Dzeko. He is at least nailed (barring further signings) and has decent fixtures.

Certainly once the Champs League roles around there will be rotation but I think about as nailed on as you can get in the top 3 teams back 4's. But if you haven't got Migs/Toure then I love G.Johnson at that price bracket.

    A'noon all,

I know there is a lot of chat about getting RVP in for GW4 for Palace at home, (and I'll be getting him in then fo sure), but just as big will be City having Hull at home on GW3.

I think you will need to have a certain city starter for that game as will surely by a goal bonanza This could mean dzecko is super-risky and should be out for kun/negredo depending on how the city line up evolves in the next 3 weeks. I'll be planning on dzecko to kun I think unless negredo or dzecko look nailed on.

Re; goalkeeper discussion from a few pages back.

Just to clarify, if you're gonna have a 4.0 GK (e.g. squad filler), is it better to have one who nobody else has? So pick someone like Rudd (0.2 % ownership) because his price won't go down, whereas someone like Davis might?

I must say something here. For very low owned players the algorithm is different. No one knows how it is exactly regarding price drops. You gonna see a lot of low owned players above 100% mark ready for falling within weeks time on both sides (TFPL and Fiso) and still won't drop. So its guess work. I am going Davis and Boruc. If Boruc looses, gets injured I have ready mate replacement. Never mind if he falls in price cause I won't sell him anyway. You lose money only if you sell.

        Cheers alll

I'm expecting around 8 points each from Cech and Cole, and I'm looking to play Dzeko from the start, so that my only transfer out in the first couple of game weeks is there if Dzeko lets me down. I don't think I'd want Lukaku stuck in my team if there are other problems in my team - kinda like how I remember many people stuck with Ba in their teams after Chelsea's DGW last season.

What are peoples' thoughts on the 4.0 goalkeeper situation?

If I get Rudd, who has been loaned out for the season and red flagged, he has just 0.2% ownership so won't fall. The 4m is effectively locked away in case its needed later, but obviously there is no chance of him playing.

I see the alternative as being Lewis (CAR), as far as I'm aware, he is the only 4.0 GK who is even second choice and so just one injury/suspension away from playing. I think the rest are third choice but may be wrong. His current ownership of 1.8 makes me worried he may drop in price.

I'm not a big fan of non-playing GKs but I think pairing with Mignolet is safe and need to squeeze in RVP.

    Any thoughts? Many Thanks

I have 1m banked to upgrade Lukaku/JRod to whoever seems most appealing.
I'd definitely rather have that option than a backup who'll I'll never play by choice. I see it as likely 2 points saved if Mignolet doesn't play and a backup comes in.
Generally, I agree with you but I've squeezed every 0.5 I can at the moment.

    Cole Kos Coleman Shaw/Collins
    Hazard Walcott Silva Miralles (Thomas)
    Lukaku Dzeko Sturridge
    0.5 banked.

    Plan is Cole/Lukaku --> Brayford / Aguero

9.5m Count. I think he'll do well no matter what. Totty have some great players and with Bale gone I reckon he will score more.

One thing I keep seeing around here is people talking about 'playing it safe,' particularly with the double gameweek. This is not the best way to play the game. If you pick Cech, yes, you get 180 mins and a chance of two clean sheets, but there's a glass ceiling that's half the size of what a defender can get. Even Cashley, last year everyone who picked him found out the hard way what you get for playing it safe.

The game is all about taking risks at the right time. A double gameweek at the very start of the season, when everyone's on a level playing field and there's a limit to how much can really go wrong, is exactly that sort of time. If you pick the safe option, best case scenario you have a decent week and worst case scenario you get left a long way behind.

Problem is any Chelsea defender, even potentially Cashley could end up with fewer than 91 mins on the pitch.

Taking advantage of a DGW is all about playing twice and Cech has the best shot plus when he saves Koren and Benteke pens there's be a GW1 no.1 w Cech as captain.

    Afternoon gents,

A lot of discussion about Van Persie ruining the balance of our teams, but I think I've found something that doesn't actually look too bad.

    Let me know your thoughts.

    Cheers

Valid point. I could possibly do the following transfers after the double Gameweek.

        Hazard > Silva / Navas

Lukaku > Dzeko (depending on Aguero's fitness)
