With as many as 16 Premier League sides preparing for friendlies tomorrow afternoon, the stage was left for Swansea last night as Michael Laudrup’s side eased through to the Europa League play-offs. Elsewhere, Jan Vertonghen is optimistic he’ll be ready for Tottenham’s trip to Palace, Sam Allardyce is doubtful over Andy Carroll’s availability, while Liverpool owner John W Henry has stated Luis Suarez is going nowhere this season.

Malmo 0 Swansea 0
Michael Laudrup made seven changes from the side that triumphed 4-0 at home in the first-leg of their Europa League qualifier last week. Only Ashley Williams, Wayne Routledge, Michu and Wilfried Bony kept their places, with summer signings such as Jose Canas and Alejandro Pozuelo getting the nod in central midfield and on the flank respectively. Chico also recovered from the thigh injury that has kept him on the sidelines recently as Jordi Amat dropped to the bench in a defence that also included Neil Taylor and Ashley Richards. Routledge and Michu were both subbed off midway through the second period as the Swans secured a comfortable passage into the play-offs, with the draw set for later today.

After the game, Laudrup praised his side’s defensive display after the visitors kept out their opponents yet again. The Swans have now registered seven clean sheets in a row and have conceded just one goal in nine games across their entire pre-season campaign – a record that their manager reckons bodes well for the season ahead:

“I am happy with the clean sheets. Not only that, but we are not even giving away chances and that’s important. That gives confidence to the whole team, the fans, when you know you are strong and that you won’t give much away. It is different when you concede every time then you need to score two goals to win a game. We had periods last year when every time opponent came close to our box it was a goal but I think we have improved and I am pleased that area…If we had to find something negative then maybe offensively we did not play that well and we could have done much better. We have to do much better. But when you play away in Europe or the Premier League you cannot always dominate and clean sheets are always important. “

In Other News
Liverpool owner John W Henry remains adamant the club will not be selling Luis Suarez this summer. The Uruguayan has been forced to train away from the first-team after his very public attempt to push through a transfer earlier in the week and despite threatening to bring the PFA into the matter, it seems Suarez may well find himself unable to force the issue.

Speaking to the media yesterday, Henry revealed Suarez and his agent had been informed any transfer needed to take place earlier in the transfer window in order to allow Brendan Rodgers time to draft in replacements – despite the fact he is banned for the first six matches of the season.

“I think the issue has been resolved now. We have said ‘no’. Luis will be a Liverpool player on September 3 [the day after the transfer window closes]. I’m unequivocal that we won’t sell to Arsenal, whatever the bid is. I have not said it to Stan [Kroenke, Arsenal’s majority shareholder] but I had a personal conversation with others at Arsenal and told him [Gazidis] we would not sell to Arsenal. He won’t be sold even if a foreign club comes in because we do not have time to sign a suitable replacement.. It’s a football reason. It’s not about finances. That’s why at this point, so late in the window, with everyone who’s already moved or isn’t moving, we can’t replace him. So for football reasons we can’t sell, and especially to Arsenal.”

With the relationship between Suarez and Rodgers having broken down completely earlier in the week, it remains to be seen just where this leaves Suarez in the Liverpool pecking order, should Henry keep to his word. Certainly, a move to the Emirates looked the best solution for both parties but the Uruguayan will need to ingratiate himself in Rodgers’ good books before Fantasy managers will contemplate him once again, with Daniel Sturridge’s position as the main forward looking stronger by the day. Over at the Emirates, the situation also bodes well for Olivier Giroud’s prospects for the season ahead. After also failing in a bid for Gonzalo Higuain, Arsene Wenger may well decide to keep faith with his compatriot, handing us an 8.5 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) priced option as the Gunners’ lone forward – given that there’s still over three weeks left of the transfer window, though, this one is likely to run right until the death.

Jan Vertonghen remains hopeful of making Tottenham’s Gameweek 1 opener at Crystal Palace. The Belgian was stretchered off after turning his ankle on a rain-soaked pitch in Hong Kong against Sunderland recently and looked likely to be ruled out of the Eagles clash but speaking to the press yesterday, he revealed:

“It was two weeks ago that I was injured in Hong Kong and I’m making a lot of progress. I’m starting to run, but the next game is in 10 days’ time so it is going to be quite close. You never know what can happen and I will always aim for the best and hope next week I’ll be very close.”

The Belgian’s return looks vital to his side after the decision to sell Steven Caulker left Andre Villas-Boas with limited options at the back. A superb opening schedule sees Spurs face just two of last season’s top six in the opening nine Gameweeks and, having finished fifth top scoring defender in his debut campaign, with five goals to his name, Vertonghen – providing he proves his fitness – certainly looks to have the platform to push on and take advantage of a very favourable run of upcoming fixtures. His potential return dents the appeal of Michael Dawson and Younes Kaboul, though – as yet it remains unclear as to who is regarded as the first-choice partner for Vertonghen in central defence but with both priced at just 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Fantasy managers are hoping Villas-Boas gives an indication to his preferred regulars as we look for a budget-friendly route into the Spurs backline.

Andy Carroll is facing a race against time to be fit for West Ham’s opener against Cardiff a week tomorrow. Yet to feature at all this summer due to a heel injury, the Hammers forward had stated earlier this week that he felt on course for a return but, speaking to the media yesterday, Sam Allardyce was far more sceptical and even suggested Carroll may not be fit until Gameweek 4:

“Andy is making good progress and doing some running. We will look at things over the next week but considering where he is in his preparation. I would have thought that we’re looking more realistically at the match following the international break, which is Southampton away on September 15.”

Providing Carroll is ruled out, the Hammers first three fixtures (CAR, new, STO) may see ownership in Kevin Nolan pick up. The West Ham captain notched a hat-trick in his previous home game (albeit with his sidekick Carroll leading the line) and has already notched three times in pre-season – at 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he looks a decent shout for those Fantasy managers intent on wildcarding after Gameweek 3, in order to cash in on the typically hectic market activity over that two-week domestic hiatus.

Why are people taking out Lukaku just because Torres now has a chance to play in the first game?

Lukaku is head and shoulders above Torres. He'll start the first regardless and undoubtedly play a part in the second (probably even start again)

Lukaku has failed to dazzle me so far, and I feel much more comfortable playing Benteke, who is pretty much a guaranteed 4 points and will most likely be involved in any and all of AV's goals.

      Just my thoughts.

with Negrado freindly match ( since soldado and torres are not in squad he should start against Ecuador) and Aguero is still injureed Dzeko could be the best city atacking option after all

we should hope that pellegrini is not liar like SAF and Mourinho

really rate Dzeko as player and if he plays 90min per match he will easily be the top goal scorer in epl

Aguero is back in training by 'the end of the week' (presumably now) so not such great news for Dzeko.

I keep hearing of a quote from Pellegrini that's something like "Dzeko will be my main striker", does anyone have a link for this as I haven't seen one yet.

What happens in GW2 though? No chance is Negredo backup for Dzeko. Personally, I will have enough players I need to remove before GW3 without adding another.

Yeah selection decisions can be messy. End of the day though it's a ridiculously cheap 7.5m punt on a natural goalscorer at title contenders who's just received the strongest backing yet in his career at City. Worth the punt.

Yeah NIP, not hugely but over the 30 hill and injuries starting to limit starts. For £5m plus I want a fair degree of consistency of starts and reasonable CS potential. He only qualifies on the later for me.

    1.
The more I think about it, the more Rooney looks good doesn't he?

    He stays at United:
    * WC year, point to prove, going to be at least as good as last year.

    He goes to Chelsea:
    * Plays in his favourite position with a great manager. Going to be at least as good as last year.

    He goes to Arsenal:
    * Yeah unlikely, but becomes a bit fish in a small pond. Relied on, and playing with Walcott.

The only problem is, is a 10% or 20% increase in points over last year enough to justify the price? As a "nailed on" captain, perhaps so? Especially when you consider that RVP could end up in a new system under a new manager, in a team that is not exepected to be as competitive as last season...

He's not being sold before GW2 that's for certain as they don't want him playing for Chelsea at OT.

Even if he ends up staying I don't think he will play GW1-2.

Very good option potentially when the dust settles.

That sort of agreement is banned. Even a gentlemen's agreement wouldn't work as United would not be prepared to rely on it (and both clubs would be breaking rules - so no recourse if flouted).

100% he's not leaving before then. Very likely he stays anyway imo.

Chelsea scenario, tick. Arsenal, tick. Staying at United, don't see that going too well right now particularly as Kagawa's natural position is roughly where he plays.

If Rooney moved to Chelsea I'd be straight in there, probably if he were at Arsenal too.

I don't think I would move to Arsenal if I was Rooney... it's too big a step backwards.

At least Chelsea is a sideways move that could guarantee silverwear in the next 3 years.

I think the general feeling is that Bale could have a similar season to last if fit and playing but the chances of RVP doing the same are reduced slightly by the upheaval at Utd. Take into account the £2m price difference and I think, given the choice, most would choose Bale.

I think he'll start one game and get some time in the other, which is what I always thought, regardless of Torres's availability.

Against Hull and Villa, that's loads of time for plenty of goalscoring opportunities.

Suits it perfectly? Not so sure about that. Chelsea won't build their side around him, or make him the central core, for which all attacks go through. To me he's just a better version of Ba right now, excelled at Newcastle and West Brom because they played to their strengths, and they were always the target to finish off the moves. Mourinho's side doesn't play like that IMO, with their inside wingers. Ba struggled massively last year, with more or less similar personnel supporting him. Everyone expected him to do really well, because they thought he'd get such good service, playing in a better team. When Drogba was there, it was easier to play to his strengths, and they had the traditional wingers feeding him. That's why i think Mourinho's so desperate for Rooney, he'd be the ultimate striker in this system with his ability to get involved with the build up, link play, and also finish off moves.

Lukaku is more versatile than you make out. Brom played good passing football in the same formation as Chelsea last year, 4-2-3-1 (though obviously with vastly different players) - it wasn't just about hoofing it straight to Lukaku.

Aye, he is better than Ba and that comes out in the shot accuracy and goal conversion which are pretty close to RVP's - Ba's are considerably inferior.

Also got to remember Chelsea may switch to the 4-3-3 which has been used in preseason so far with Lukaku getting in the goals. This would be considerably more friendly to the central striker IMO.

Also, the Mourinho side of 2004-2006 in which Drogba thrived did have wingers that were very willing to cut inside, Duff and Cole being left footers on the right, and Robben cutting in from the left.

You're right about Robben. I think Duff was more of an out and out wide player though, during that spell, along with Malouda. I just think there are subtle differences to the Drogba era. He was more of a traditional striker, and you don't get many of them around these days, as i think the game has changed. Lukaku may go on to be similar, but right now i don't think he's at that level. Drogba used to really bully centre backs. Lukaku can do that, but not to the same effect. I just think he'll be feeding from scraps, relying on set pieices, or a loose ball in the area. Those are good conversion stats, but i still don't think he's as good a finisher as Rooney/Drogba when on form. Also i wouldn't count Malaysia XI, or Indonesian all stars as proper opposition tbh. He hasn't done anything against Inter, Chelsea or Real in the 2nd leg of pre season. I just remember him missing some chances for Chelsea lately. Seems like he'l l be the guy laying off the attackers, or creating the space with his pace and strength keeping the CB's occupied, whereas with Drogba it was a bit different and he scored the goals week in week out. Just my opinion

Yeah fair enough, clearly the squad and tactics as a whole have changed a lot in the 6ish years since Mourinho left. For example, while I see Hazard as someone who can play as a traditional winger (as well as cut inside to great effect), Mata is a more central player, dunno if the old term 'inside right' is a better description.

Really what I'm banking on is that Mourinho goes 4-3-3, with Lukaku the focus of the attack as the center forward. Yes he'll be doing a lot of off the ball work to occupy defenders, but then Drogba did that all the time too. I'm figuring that by virtue of being so involved attacking points must follow.

                  Good discussion anyway!

If Valencia and Nani are back in their top form. I have to say WATCH OUT with the decision.

Don't forget Nani 2010/2011 and Valencia 2011/2012. Don't ever underestimate Manchester United winger!!!

Depends what you consider punts! Will probably end up with two Zaha definitely will be one if he starts this weekend.

    Another day, another tinker.

    Cech - (Boruc)
    Terry - Collins - Parr - (Brayford) - (Chester)
    Hazard - Walcott - Silva - Jarvis - (Thomas)
    RVP - Lambert - RVW

Exit plan - Cech and Terry > Foster and Coleman. Upgrade Jarvis to whoever looks good.

    Thoughts?

Loving the 2 rickys idea. Just can't shake the thought that Norwich are a more defensive unit under Hughton myself. Still, you never know

Thanks for the reply. Indeed it's the first time that RVW has appeared in my team this year. I'm thinking if Norwich score then it'll almost definitely come from him (or the odd Snodgrass free kick), in the same way that Benteke did so well last year.

They've picked up a lot of attacking players so far, i think they'll be a different team to last season.

I just think, that Mata might not going to play in 1st game in starting eleven. You don't use player in first game who hasn't play in preseason at all. Mata's fitness might not ready yet.

I agree..he will come in for 15,20min if everything is ok,and I dont see it not happening cause they are playing Tigers..Jose needs him more for Villa game

Mata 25 mins plus 90 mins is still a hugely explosive asset if fielded with Hazard (c)

Still the price. In GW3 he won't play. The best is pick one of them Mata or Hazard. Hazard has very big chance for 180 minutes.

I guess you are not experience enough yet.

You don't wildcard in the beginning especially just for Chelsea DGW. If you want, you can do it but I'll tell you something, you will regret it. There are more of worse DGW in EPL than this.

I am experienced enough to know how to navigate my way from 3 Chelsea players without a wildcard.

But there is no right answer re when you play it until the benefit of hindsight, you can make an absolute killing doing it early.

              Didn't last year's winner play his GW2-3?

If the latter is a non-playing substitute then B. If you play to play/rotate Kim then A.
