With as many as 16 Premier League sides preparing for friendlies tomorrow afternoon, the stage was left for Swansea last night as Michael Laudrup’s side eased through to the Europa League play-offs. Elsewhere, Jan Vertonghen is optimistic he’ll be ready for Tottenham’s trip to Palace, Sam Allardyce is doubtful over Andy Carroll’s availability, while Liverpool owner John W Henry has stated Luis Suarez is going nowhere this season.

Malmo 0 Swansea 0
Michael Laudrup made seven changes from the side that triumphed 4-0 at home in the first-leg of their Europa League qualifier last week. Only Ashley Williams, Wayne Routledge, Michu and Wilfried Bony kept their places, with summer signings such as Jose Canas and Alejandro Pozuelo getting the nod in central midfield and on the flank respectively. Chico also recovered from the thigh injury that has kept him on the sidelines recently as Jordi Amat dropped to the bench in a defence that also included Neil Taylor and Ashley Richards. Routledge and Michu were both subbed off midway through the second period as the Swans secured a comfortable passage into the play-offs, with the draw set for later today.

After the game, Laudrup praised his side’s defensive display after the visitors kept out their opponents yet again. The Swans have now registered seven clean sheets in a row and have conceded just one goal in nine games across their entire pre-season campaign – a record that their manager reckons bodes well for the season ahead:

“I am happy with the clean sheets. Not only that, but we are not even giving away chances and that’s important. That gives confidence to the whole team, the fans, when you know you are strong and that you won’t give much away. It is different when you concede every time then you need to score two goals to win a game. We had periods last year when every time opponent came close to our box it was a goal but I think we have improved and I am pleased that area…If we had to find something negative then maybe offensively we did not play that well and we could have done much better. We have to do much better. But when you play away in Europe or the Premier League you cannot always dominate and clean sheets are always important. “

In Other News
Liverpool owner John W Henry remains adamant the club will not be selling Luis Suarez this summer. The Uruguayan has been forced to train away from the first-team after his very public attempt to push through a transfer earlier in the week and despite threatening to bring the PFA into the matter, it seems Suarez may well find himself unable to force the issue.

Speaking to the media yesterday, Henry revealed Suarez and his agent had been informed any transfer needed to take place earlier in the transfer window in order to allow Brendan Rodgers time to draft in replacements – despite the fact he is banned for the first six matches of the season.

“I think the issue has been resolved now. We have said ‘no’. Luis will be a Liverpool player on September 3 [the day after the transfer window closes]. I’m unequivocal that we won’t sell to Arsenal, whatever the bid is. I have not said it to Stan [Kroenke, Arsenal’s majority shareholder] but I had a personal conversation with others at Arsenal and told him [Gazidis] we would not sell to Arsenal. He won’t be sold even if a foreign club comes in because we do not have time to sign a suitable replacement.. It’s a football reason. It’s not about finances. That’s why at this point, so late in the window, with everyone who’s already moved or isn’t moving, we can’t replace him. So for football reasons we can’t sell, and especially to Arsenal.”

With the relationship between Suarez and Rodgers having broken down completely earlier in the week, it remains to be seen just where this leaves Suarez in the Liverpool pecking order, should Henry keep to his word. Certainly, a move to the Emirates looked the best solution for both parties but the Uruguayan will need to ingratiate himself in Rodgers’ good books before Fantasy managers will contemplate him once again, with Daniel Sturridge’s position as the main forward looking stronger by the day. Over at the Emirates, the situation also bodes well for Olivier Giroud’s prospects for the season ahead. After also failing in a bid for Gonzalo Higuain, Arsene Wenger may well decide to keep faith with his compatriot, handing us an 8.5 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) priced option as the Gunners’ lone forward – given that there’s still over three weeks left of the transfer window, though, this one is likely to run right until the death.

Jan Vertonghen remains hopeful of making Tottenham’s Gameweek 1 opener at Crystal Palace. The Belgian was stretchered off after turning his ankle on a rain-soaked pitch in Hong Kong against Sunderland recently and looked likely to be ruled out of the Eagles clash but speaking to the press yesterday, he revealed:

“It was two weeks ago that I was injured in Hong Kong and I’m making a lot of progress. I’m starting to run, but the next game is in 10 days’ time so it is going to be quite close. You never know what can happen and I will always aim for the best and hope next week I’ll be very close.”

The Belgian’s return looks vital to his side after the decision to sell Steven Caulker left Andre Villas-Boas with limited options at the back. A superb opening schedule sees Spurs face just two of last season’s top six in the opening nine Gameweeks and, having finished fifth top scoring defender in his debut campaign, with five goals to his name, Vertonghen – providing he proves his fitness – certainly looks to have the platform to push on and take advantage of a very favourable run of upcoming fixtures. His potential return dents the appeal of Michael Dawson and Younes Kaboul, though – as yet it remains unclear as to who is regarded as the first-choice partner for Vertonghen in central defence but with both priced at just 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Fantasy managers are hoping Villas-Boas gives an indication to his preferred regulars as we look for a budget-friendly route into the Spurs backline.

Andy Carroll is facing a race against time to be fit for West Ham’s opener against Cardiff a week tomorrow. Yet to feature at all this summer due to a heel injury, the Hammers forward had stated earlier this week that he felt on course for a return but, speaking to the media yesterday, Sam Allardyce was far more sceptical and even suggested Carroll may not be fit until Gameweek 4:

“Andy is making good progress and doing some running. We will look at things over the next week but considering where he is in his preparation. I would have thought that we’re looking more realistically at the match following the international break, which is Southampton away on September 15.”

Providing Carroll is ruled out, the Hammers first three fixtures (CAR, new, STO) may see ownership in Kevin Nolan pick up. The West Ham captain notched a hat-trick in his previous home game (albeit with his sidekick Carroll leading the line) and has already notched three times in pre-season – at 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he looks a decent shout for those Fantasy managers intent on wildcarding after Gameweek 3, in order to cash in on the typically hectic market activity over that two-week domestic hiatus.

    Hi guys,

Sorry I have asked this a few times, wondered what the consenus was about Zabaleta on here though? Is the man as nailed on as nailed on can be, or does he face serious competition from the big man Richards?

He was a real gem in my team last year.

Oh, I'm so sure. He was nailed on last year as Richards was injured. Everyone had him, he won't be nailed on simply because there is competition for the place.

Trying to get an rvp team 😀 but stuck with which keeper combo to go with

    A: mignolet + mcgregor (@10mil) rmt gives 36 points for first 10gws
    B: Foster + boruc (@9.5mil)... rmt gives 34.75 points for first 10gws
    C: speroni + mcgregor (@9mil) rmt gives 33.39 points for first 10gws

Tempted to with B....as toure could be a good option for lpool. also, are there any keepers for 4m that we know might start?

Camzy, question is which two 4.5 milll goalies rotate well? If there isnt a good 9.0 combination which one would you select from below?

        A. Foster + Boruc = 9.5
        B. Mignolet + non starting 4.0 = 9.5
        C. Foster + Mannone = 9.5

Also, Toure for me is a good punt from corners. I already have both Sturridge & Coutinho so have to select 1 between Mig and Toure. Please help!!

You'll be wrong on at least one of them and the opportunity cost of losing Walcott, Silva and Coutinho type players is too high.

There's a decent chance Chelsea go crazy in one of their matches, the 3 amigos are bound to be involved. Obviously I'll get rid of at least 2 of them before GW3 and bring in someone like Kagawa/Silva/Walcott or Snodgrass if I want to free up funds for RVP. It leaves me with lots of options.

No, Rafael is better. Disgrace that Zab was in team of the year ahead of Raf!

On the point though I think he is pretty nailed on. Can't be sure as new managers mean new favourites but city have other issues to worry about without messing around with a settled position

Love the man, but feels a bit risky to me. I think Kompany is the only locked-on guy. I'm personally going Lescott for the first 4 weeks (very favorable schedule); ride up his price a bit and then transfer to whichever 5.0 feels the most locked-on (hopefully Toure - ironically)

I think Anelka will do okay for those who pick him but can't see him playing all the time - also think Coutinho is a bit of a gamble in this game, very little experience to be priced up near more relaible mids like Silva/Walcott

That is why I've gone with it, I think it far outweighs having a Chelsea defender.

Plus I'm very likely to take a hit GW2 to offload 2 of them, so I'd rather take a hit to dump an attacker

I've been 50-50 with Nolan and Mirallas but with this it means I can have Nolan in GW1 and then downgrade 1 of Mata/Hazard to Mirallas in GW2. Cheers Mata for being rested 😎

Kim, I think he is probably the better player in more of an attacking team. Fixtures probably a bit tougher though.

For reasons which are quite complicated to explain, I have a dilemma between Bony and Dzeko. Whichever one I choose will be in my team from GW1-GW3

        A) Dzeko

Pros: Good fixtures. Having him (0.5m cheaper) enables me to wait till GW2 to pick the most nailed-on 4.5m defender to play in the GW3 blank due to Hazard/Benteke on bench.

Cons: There's only one and its a biggy, he might not play - and in GW3 he's definitely needed otherwise I'll end up playing 5-4-1 for that week. If that's the case then having a more expensive defender is of no benefit, as he would have to play along with my 4.0 option.

        B) Bony

Pros: Nailed-on to play, including in the vital GW3 where I could definitely play 2 up top. Virtually fixture proof and gives me a good chance of assists for Michu should he not score.

Cons: Bad fixtures. Because he's 0.5m more I'd definitely have to play a 4.0m defender in GW3.

So...A or B? Cast your votes

I like your reasoning.. but...How can you say Bony is fixtureproof? He is unproven in the PL.

The safe pick is Bony, the risky (maybe with higher rewards) is Dzeko.

Ok perhaps a mistake to say he, specifically, is fixture proof

But I believe Swansea as a unit can score against anybody. And as he's the lone striker who Michu will link up with, his odds of some kind of goal involvement look good

I am rare on this board, but am avoiding both for all the reasons you lay out. LOOOOVE bony, but let's give him 4-5 weeks to get his legs under him.

Although I could get burned, just don't understand the Dzeko love here. He's going to play 70 mins, 30 mins, 70 mins, 30 mins. Even if he starts no way he is on the pitch to grab the silly goals at the end of the games...

I'm taking a punt on Bony but it's risible to call him fixture proof - he's never played a single Premier League fixture. And he just failed to score against Malmo, when Malmo had no option but to come out and score.

          Neither

But if you have to pick one go A

Bony could be rotated for europe (unlikely but might happen), has tougher fixtures and is new to the prem.

Dzeko might not start all the time but I fear him more as a sub than I do when he starts

Rat for attacking gains, but then collins ic just 4.5m and will benefit more from BPS.
Their fixtures plus their new signings will surely enable to improve even more at the back. I would post it as a question if you want more than my opinion on West Ham.

i think SOT/WHM rotation are superbly strong for the 3rd slot.
            1 player will be a 4.0 benchwarmer.
leaves 2 "premium" slots left over.

Kosielny is the first name on my team sheet, he is all action, gets CS and scores goals.
            leaving 1 slot for a 5mln defender.

my money is on Coleman. served me really well in the 2010/11 season and is a better player now. for me Toure is not nailed on, whilst Spu*s defence is a bit ropey with that high line.

Negredo on Spain duty and Aguero injury doubt. This paired with Pellegrini's comments re: Dzeko over the course of pre-season have got many claiming he's nailed on for GW1 at least.

Almost every game and the comments Pelligrini has come out with, very positive. He named him as his main striker, he called him a number one.
I'm still a bit wary though, not sure if some of this was misconstrued. I think he will start first few games though.

          PS: he's scoring for fun

He's done well in pre-season. His main competition, Negredo, is in the Spain squad for the Ecuador match a few days before.

It's post GW1 that worries me. Rotated at best, backup for Negredo at worst.

My opinion is that he starts GWs 1 and 4.

Not sure on 2 and 3 but I reckon he'll be involved in both at some point ans could do some damage.

As 3-4 GW punt I think he's worth it

              Why GW4 in particular?

                Stoke away

seems like a game tailor made for a man with Dzeko's strengths (namely his ability in the air)

Like it. I've been considering going for a non-RVP team and that one looks good.
