With as many as 16 Premier League sides preparing for friendlies tomorrow afternoon, the stage was left for Swansea last night as Michael Laudrup’s side eased through to the Europa League play-offs. Elsewhere, Jan Vertonghen is optimistic he’ll be ready for Tottenham’s trip to Palace, Sam Allardyce is doubtful over Andy Carroll’s availability, while Liverpool owner John W Henry has stated Luis Suarez is going nowhere this season.

Malmo 0 Swansea 0
Michael Laudrup made seven changes from the side that triumphed 4-0 at home in the first-leg of their Europa League qualifier last week. Only Ashley Williams, Wayne Routledge, Michu and Wilfried Bony kept their places, with summer signings such as Jose Canas and Alejandro Pozuelo getting the nod in central midfield and on the flank respectively. Chico also recovered from the thigh injury that has kept him on the sidelines recently as Jordi Amat dropped to the bench in a defence that also included Neil Taylor and Ashley Richards. Routledge and Michu were both subbed off midway through the second period as the Swans secured a comfortable passage into the play-offs, with the draw set for later today.

After the game, Laudrup praised his side’s defensive display after the visitors kept out their opponents yet again. The Swans have now registered seven clean sheets in a row and have conceded just one goal in nine games across their entire pre-season campaign – a record that their manager reckons bodes well for the season ahead:

“I am happy with the clean sheets. Not only that, but we are not even giving away chances and that’s important. That gives confidence to the whole team, the fans, when you know you are strong and that you won’t give much away. It is different when you concede every time then you need to score two goals to win a game. We had periods last year when every time opponent came close to our box it was a goal but I think we have improved and I am pleased that area…If we had to find something negative then maybe offensively we did not play that well and we could have done much better. We have to do much better. But when you play away in Europe or the Premier League you cannot always dominate and clean sheets are always important. “

In Other News
Liverpool owner John W Henry remains adamant the club will not be selling Luis Suarez this summer. The Uruguayan has been forced to train away from the first-team after his very public attempt to push through a transfer earlier in the week and despite threatening to bring the PFA into the matter, it seems Suarez may well find himself unable to force the issue.

Speaking to the media yesterday, Henry revealed Suarez and his agent had been informed any transfer needed to take place earlier in the transfer window in order to allow Brendan Rodgers time to draft in replacements – despite the fact he is banned for the first six matches of the season.

“I think the issue has been resolved now. We have said ‘no’. Luis will be a Liverpool player on September 3 [the day after the transfer window closes]. I’m unequivocal that we won’t sell to Arsenal, whatever the bid is. I have not said it to Stan [Kroenke, Arsenal’s majority shareholder] but I had a personal conversation with others at Arsenal and told him [Gazidis] we would not sell to Arsenal. He won’t be sold even if a foreign club comes in because we do not have time to sign a suitable replacement.. It’s a football reason. It’s not about finances. That’s why at this point, so late in the window, with everyone who’s already moved or isn’t moving, we can’t replace him. So for football reasons we can’t sell, and especially to Arsenal.”

With the relationship between Suarez and Rodgers having broken down completely earlier in the week, it remains to be seen just where this leaves Suarez in the Liverpool pecking order, should Henry keep to his word. Certainly, a move to the Emirates looked the best solution for both parties but the Uruguayan will need to ingratiate himself in Rodgers’ good books before Fantasy managers will contemplate him once again, with Daniel Sturridge’s position as the main forward looking stronger by the day. Over at the Emirates, the situation also bodes well for Olivier Giroud’s prospects for the season ahead. After also failing in a bid for Gonzalo Higuain, Arsene Wenger may well decide to keep faith with his compatriot, handing us an 8.5 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) priced option as the Gunners’ lone forward – given that there’s still over three weeks left of the transfer window, though, this one is likely to run right until the death.

Jan Vertonghen remains hopeful of making Tottenham’s Gameweek 1 opener at Crystal Palace. The Belgian was stretchered off after turning his ankle on a rain-soaked pitch in Hong Kong against Sunderland recently and looked likely to be ruled out of the Eagles clash but speaking to the press yesterday, he revealed:

“It was two weeks ago that I was injured in Hong Kong and I’m making a lot of progress. I’m starting to run, but the next game is in 10 days’ time so it is going to be quite close. You never know what can happen and I will always aim for the best and hope next week I’ll be very close.”

The Belgian’s return looks vital to his side after the decision to sell Steven Caulker left Andre Villas-Boas with limited options at the back. A superb opening schedule sees Spurs face just two of last season’s top six in the opening nine Gameweeks and, having finished fifth top scoring defender in his debut campaign, with five goals to his name, Vertonghen – providing he proves his fitness – certainly looks to have the platform to push on and take advantage of a very favourable run of upcoming fixtures. His potential return dents the appeal of Michael Dawson and Younes Kaboul, though – as yet it remains unclear as to who is regarded as the first-choice partner for Vertonghen in central defence but with both priced at just 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Fantasy managers are hoping Villas-Boas gives an indication to his preferred regulars as we look for a budget-friendly route into the Spurs backline.

Andy Carroll is facing a race against time to be fit for West Ham’s opener against Cardiff a week tomorrow. Yet to feature at all this summer due to a heel injury, the Hammers forward had stated earlier this week that he felt on course for a return but, speaking to the media yesterday, Sam Allardyce was far more sceptical and even suggested Carroll may not be fit until Gameweek 4:

“Andy is making good progress and doing some running. We will look at things over the next week but considering where he is in his preparation. I would have thought that we’re looking more realistically at the match following the international break, which is Southampton away on September 15.”

Providing Carroll is ruled out, the Hammers first three fixtures (CAR, new, STO) may see ownership in Kevin Nolan pick up. The West Ham captain notched a hat-trick in his previous home game (albeit with his sidekick Carroll leading the line) and has already notched three times in pre-season – at 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he looks a decent shout for those Fantasy managers intent on wildcarding after Gameweek 3, in order to cash in on the typically hectic market activity over that two-week domestic hiatus.

...or do you think he's too cheap?

lack of nailed on front eight is a particular bug bear though - picking city / chelsea / united (less rvp) will be a difficult one this season...

Anelka's a strange one. Half of us think he's not worth touching at all, the other think he's a must have at 5.5.

Why the huge split in opinion? Most other players are generally agreed upon as a good option or bad option, bar the odd punt. But Anelka's completely split down the middle.

Further to my Bony or Dzeko debate on the previous page...

I've bottled it on both counts and put Lambert in. As I'm, in all likelihood, going to use my WC after GW3 I have to ignore my Bony love and Dzeko temptation and go with the safe option with good fixtures. Benteke + Lukaku is already enough of a gamble up top.

However...Putting money aside, is he a better option than Rodriguez? Is JRod 100% nailed on and will he get more goals than Rickie in the opening 3 games?

    4th/5th midfielder options

Most have the template of Hazard Walcott Silva. Makes sense that. Goal scoring midfield coverage of the top 3 teams in the league next year.

Question is how to differentiate oneself with the 4th/5th midfielder options.

Miralles & Thomas (or other 4.5): Miralles is OOP with decent fixtures. Thomas is going to play on the bench.
Johnson & Kim: Both are effectively OOP; Johnson a winger who cuts inside and Kim in the hole, Johnson has decent fixtures to start.

I havent found a better option than these (dont want to spend more as it damages team balance).
Dont rate Snodgrass, who makes a lot of RMTs, whilst Nolan I think is too expensive and he only performs at home.

    What are others going for?

      As a Liverpool fan:

Dropping Migs -> gives you a million more to spend as you go to rotatinong 2 * 4.5m = about the same in my book.
Dropping Toure -> gives you the most options as you can go up to Merts/Kos, stick at Kaboul/Coleman or go down to one of the many solid 4.5m options
Coutinho -> easiest transition to make as so many good option in midfield at 9m or a dg to Mirallas/Nolan gives you money to burn.
Sturridge -> I'm not buying getting Benkeke in for two of the hardest fixtures in the league to then transfer him out for who??? No comparable trade and so a dg to Lambert would be reasonable.

In summary Sturridge would be the hardest to replace and Toure the easiest and he just so happens to be the only one that isn't nailed on. But it all depends on how the rest of your midfield stacks up and how many primes you already have in there.

    Cech, Boruc

    Mert, Coleman, Collins, Brayford, Chester

    Hazard, Gerrard, Silva, Jarvis, Kim

    RVP, Lukaku, JRod

Cech > Mig and Lukaku > Bony/Giroud/Sturridge etc after GW1.

    Thoughts?

Currently have no United cover and was thinking of getting Zaha instead of Snodgrass. Would that be silly seeing as though no United player other than RVP seems to be nailed on? Already taking a punt on Aspas so going with Zaha also may be too "punty" huh? Help!

I WILL be getting Zaha as early on as i can (will not be starting with him, mostly because of DGW)

I'm a United fan and think he will be first choice as the season progresses.......Valencia is the only one that can really trouble him, and atm he won't cause much trouble!

There are only 8 days to go before the PL season opens, and I wanted to explore the early season punts that people are taking and whether they're worth it or not. Let's look at these guys and see if we can get to the bottom of whether they'll be the next Michu or the next Boselli.

So here we go, here are some early season forward punts and why you may consider getting or NOT getting them:

    1. Dzeko
Upside: Fantastic fixtures, 7.5m (a flexible price point), a proven goalscorer at the PL level. The kicker for a lot of people is that he has gotten speculated reassurance from Pellegrini that he is City's "main striker". There is talk though that the quote may have gotten lost in translation and actually means he is one of City's "main strikers" which changes things a little.
Downside: Starts, starts, starts. It's all too easy for Pellegrini to bring him on from the bench or just play him every other game which will easily diminish his value.
Safer Alternative: Rickie Lambert. Pretty self-explanatory. Decent fixtures, same price, pks.
Is he worth it? 7.5m for a City forward with decent chances at playing. Great fixtures, flexible price point. I think the key thing here is that you are okay with sparing a transfer in case it doesn't pan out. He's worth the punt, but you need to be okay with taking a hit even among taking the Chelsea guys out just in case.

    2. Lukaku
Upside: DGW. Great form from last season and pre-season. Looks good for at least one start unless something new develops in the next week.
Downside: Rotation. Lukaku looks very much like a short-term punt by a lot of people seeing as after GW 1 Chelsea's fixtures read: mun BLANK. So he HAS to deliver in this DGW to be worth it.
Safer Alternative: Giroud. Unless Arsenal sign a new striker in the next week which looks highly unlikely, Giroud will lead the line and has STK, avl, TOT first three which is pretty darn nice.
Is he worth it? It depends on your Chelsea DGW coverage in truth. With those 2 fixtures, you've got to have at least 3 imo. If for some reason you really don't believe he'll get starts, you can always jump ship and pick up either Mata or Oscar in midfield along with a defender. As of right now though, he offers a solid option up front for Chelsea and even if he only starts one game, could well pay off.

    3. Soldado
Upside: Striker with great pedigree, starts up front for Spurs, nice fixtures.
Downside: Potentially better alternatives elsewhere, somewhat pricy, concern over lack of service if Bale goes/doesn't play.
Safer alternative: Benteke. Will start up front for Villa for both fixtures in a double GW. Proven.
Is he worth it? This largely depends on how well you think Spurs will do. If they fly out the blocks, with those fixtures, you're looking at great returns. If they struggle to cope without Bale, it might be 9.5m rotting away as they try to figure things out as rivals speed ahead with the likes of Lambert or Sturridge.

Pretty much it in a nutshell.

Regarding worries about Spurs missing Bale's service, it might not be so essential. OPTA have Bale down as providing only 5 assists last year (this is 4 less than the FPL total, probably because FPL counts rebounds) and his chance creation rate was not much higher than that of Lennon. He did cross a lot more, though it didn't translate into many assists, maybe because they lacked a clinical finisher. I'd guess Soldado should still get good service from both Lennon & Chadli and the excellent midfield triangle behind him.

Well balanced. My points of concern would be:
      - lack of United players (may not be a problem, if they don't perform well against Wigan),
      - Lukaku, Toure and Mannone not being nailed on.

Bony should be a good pick over the season, but Swansea's EL campaign may deter their Premier League exploits, even though they have strengthend.

I think that WBA were HORRIBLE defensively under Clarke and I haven't seen anything over the summer to change that. I also don't think that I will be excited about any of the promoted teams defensive chances until I see they can hack it at this level and that includes Cardiff who have made significant improvements over the summer.

All in all I don't like it very much at all when you have an improved Soton def to choose from at the same price as Hull or the keeper from the second best defense in the league available for 0.5m more than Foster.

Better late than ever. Finally got round to buying FIFA 13 at a knockdown price two weeks ago and have been hooked playing H2H seasons (seems to me like FUT involves a lot of effort and time that will probably be deducted from FPL).

Anyway, the last FIFA I played was, wait for it, FIFA 2005, so I have been getting used to it but seem to be getting the hang of it after a ropey start when I was being thrashed left right and centre as Arsenal (no laughing at the back).

I finally got my head round the idea that pace is basically all that matters in the game, so I decided to work it. I'm now playing as 3.5 star Wigan and I've brought on the two reserves Crusat and Miyaichi as inverted wingers (Crusat at RW because he's left footed, Miyaichi at LW because he's right footed) because they have insane 90+ pace. Just hammer the through ball and it basically becomes the Olympics 100m for the goal. Gone on a bit of a win streak, punctuated by people rage quitting mid game (I thought they were meant to punish you for that?)

I am getting a bit sick of the apparent lack of technical ability FIFA has given Wigan, it gets pretty annoying. Anyone know any better/pacier teams at 3.5/4 star ratings?

I'd drop Negredo and one of City defenders.

I like Mirallas and Pozuelo options, but I'll probably opt for a nailed on 5th mid instead.

Will Lampard get enough gametime to be considered a geniune DGW player? I know he killed it last year, but can he repeat it?

with the Mata news. it will better to pick Lampard. and remember he's first-choice penalty taker. he loves to score against Villa too, doesn't surprise me if he can score against them.
i think for the tough game v United - Mourinho will pick Essien & Ramires, so Lampard should start for Villa game

Not a fan at all to be honest, its looks like an RVP team.........but without RVP! Too much needless spend in defense for my money and you have a serious chance of NONE of your strikers starting on a weekly basis!
