With as many as 16 Premier League sides preparing for friendlies tomorrow afternoon, the stage was left for Swansea last night as Michael Laudrup’s side eased through to the Europa League play-offs. Elsewhere, Jan Vertonghen is optimistic he’ll be ready for Tottenham’s trip to Palace, Sam Allardyce is doubtful over Andy Carroll’s availability, while Liverpool owner John W Henry has stated Luis Suarez is going nowhere this season.

Malmo 0 Swansea 0
Michael Laudrup made seven changes from the side that triumphed 4-0 at home in the first-leg of their Europa League qualifier last week. Only Ashley Williams, Wayne Routledge, Michu and Wilfried Bony kept their places, with summer signings such as Jose Canas and Alejandro Pozuelo getting the nod in central midfield and on the flank respectively. Chico also recovered from the thigh injury that has kept him on the sidelines recently as Jordi Amat dropped to the bench in a defence that also included Neil Taylor and Ashley Richards. Routledge and Michu were both subbed off midway through the second period as the Swans secured a comfortable passage into the play-offs, with the draw set for later today.

After the game, Laudrup praised his side’s defensive display after the visitors kept out their opponents yet again. The Swans have now registered seven clean sheets in a row and have conceded just one goal in nine games across their entire pre-season campaign – a record that their manager reckons bodes well for the season ahead:

“I am happy with the clean sheets. Not only that, but we are not even giving away chances and that’s important. That gives confidence to the whole team, the fans, when you know you are strong and that you won’t give much away. It is different when you concede every time then you need to score two goals to win a game. We had periods last year when every time opponent came close to our box it was a goal but I think we have improved and I am pleased that area…If we had to find something negative then maybe offensively we did not play that well and we could have done much better. We have to do much better. But when you play away in Europe or the Premier League you cannot always dominate and clean sheets are always important. “

In Other News
Liverpool owner John W Henry remains adamant the club will not be selling Luis Suarez this summer. The Uruguayan has been forced to train away from the first-team after his very public attempt to push through a transfer earlier in the week and despite threatening to bring the PFA into the matter, it seems Suarez may well find himself unable to force the issue.

Speaking to the media yesterday, Henry revealed Suarez and his agent had been informed any transfer needed to take place earlier in the transfer window in order to allow Brendan Rodgers time to draft in replacements – despite the fact he is banned for the first six matches of the season.

“I think the issue has been resolved now. We have said ‘no’. Luis will be a Liverpool player on September 3 [the day after the transfer window closes]. I’m unequivocal that we won’t sell to Arsenal, whatever the bid is. I have not said it to Stan [Kroenke, Arsenal’s majority shareholder] but I had a personal conversation with others at Arsenal and told him [Gazidis] we would not sell to Arsenal. He won’t be sold even if a foreign club comes in because we do not have time to sign a suitable replacement.. It’s a football reason. It’s not about finances. That’s why at this point, so late in the window, with everyone who’s already moved or isn’t moving, we can’t replace him. So for football reasons we can’t sell, and especially to Arsenal.”

With the relationship between Suarez and Rodgers having broken down completely earlier in the week, it remains to be seen just where this leaves Suarez in the Liverpool pecking order, should Henry keep to his word. Certainly, a move to the Emirates looked the best solution for both parties but the Uruguayan will need to ingratiate himself in Rodgers’ good books before Fantasy managers will contemplate him once again, with Daniel Sturridge’s position as the main forward looking stronger by the day. Over at the Emirates, the situation also bodes well for Olivier Giroud’s prospects for the season ahead. After also failing in a bid for Gonzalo Higuain, Arsene Wenger may well decide to keep faith with his compatriot, handing us an 8.5 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) priced option as the Gunners’ lone forward – given that there’s still over three weeks left of the transfer window, though, this one is likely to run right until the death.

Jan Vertonghen remains hopeful of making Tottenham’s Gameweek 1 opener at Crystal Palace. The Belgian was stretchered off after turning his ankle on a rain-soaked pitch in Hong Kong against Sunderland recently and looked likely to be ruled out of the Eagles clash but speaking to the press yesterday, he revealed:

“It was two weeks ago that I was injured in Hong Kong and I’m making a lot of progress. I’m starting to run, but the next game is in 10 days’ time so it is going to be quite close. You never know what can happen and I will always aim for the best and hope next week I’ll be very close.”

The Belgian’s return looks vital to his side after the decision to sell Steven Caulker left Andre Villas-Boas with limited options at the back. A superb opening schedule sees Spurs face just two of last season’s top six in the opening nine Gameweeks and, having finished fifth top scoring defender in his debut campaign, with five goals to his name, Vertonghen – providing he proves his fitness – certainly looks to have the platform to push on and take advantage of a very favourable run of upcoming fixtures. His potential return dents the appeal of Michael Dawson and Younes Kaboul, though – as yet it remains unclear as to who is regarded as the first-choice partner for Vertonghen in central defence but with both priced at just 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Fantasy managers are hoping Villas-Boas gives an indication to his preferred regulars as we look for a budget-friendly route into the Spurs backline.

Andy Carroll is facing a race against time to be fit for West Ham’s opener against Cardiff a week tomorrow. Yet to feature at all this summer due to a heel injury, the Hammers forward had stated earlier this week that he felt on course for a return but, speaking to the media yesterday, Sam Allardyce was far more sceptical and even suggested Carroll may not be fit until Gameweek 4:

“Andy is making good progress and doing some running. We will look at things over the next week but considering where he is in his preparation. I would have thought that we’re looking more realistically at the match following the international break, which is Southampton away on September 15.”

Providing Carroll is ruled out, the Hammers first three fixtures (CAR, new, STO) may see ownership in Kevin Nolan pick up. The West Ham captain notched a hat-trick in his previous home game (albeit with his sidekick Carroll leading the line) and has already notched three times in pre-season – at 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he looks a decent shout for those Fantasy managers intent on wildcarding after Gameweek 3, in order to cash in on the typically hectic market activity over that two-week domestic hiatus.

A matter of fixtures I say, Nolan it's in great form and is the man in WH till Andy gets back.

Johnson is one for the patient managers as you have to pick him and stick by him to maximize the potential. He is not a quick fix pick that so many favour.

Snoddy was the same for me all of last season, I kept the faith and played him home and away and by the end of the season the value that you get is massive.

TLDR alert... I've been having a look at a few of the midfielders I've been considering in the mid-high price bracket to see how they compare. In particular I wondered about some who for one reason or another didn't manage to play a full season last time out, and how they would match up against some of the players who were luckier with injuries/rotation if their playing time was evened out.

I've looked at a couple of related states: how many minutes these players had to play to earn a point, and how many points they'd have earned if they'd played 3000 minutes over the course of the season. I took that as my benchmark for someone who is pretty nailed on, but perhaps picked up a couple of minor injuries and/or was rested a few times for cup competitions. It's almost exactly what Michu played, and just over what Bale played.

There are big caveats of course: Coutinho had pretty easy opposition in his limited minutes, for example, so you'd expect his MPP to drop off a bit. Players whose minutes were reduced by injury rather than rotation might be expected to improve if they have better luck with their fitness this time round etc. And of course the likes of the Chelsea players may actually see their minutes decrease rather than increase the season.

Anyway, a few results below for you to mull over... enjoy!

    Bale - played 2921 - scored 249 - minutes per point 11.73 - projected score from 3000 minutes 255

    Walcott - played 2286 - scored 194 - minutes per point 11.78 - projected score from 3000 minutes 254

    Mata - played 2729 - scored 212 - minutes per point 12.87 - projected score from 3000 minutes 233

    Coutinho - played 923 - scored 70 - minutes per point 13.18 - projected score from 3000 minutes 227

    Hazard - played 2626 - scored 190 - minutes per point 13.82 - projected score from 3000 minutes 217

    Kagawa - played 1314 - scored 87 - minutes per point 15.10 - projected score from 3000 minutes 198

    Michu - played 2998 - scored 190 - minutes per point 15.77 - projected score from 3000 minutes 190

    Santi - played 3301 - scored 205 - minutes per point 16.10 - projected score from 3000 minutes 186

    Silva - played 2511 - scored 147 - minutes per point 17.08 - projected score from 3000 minutes 175

    Gerrard - played 3221 - scored 185 - minutes per point 17.41 - projected score from 3000 minutes 172

    Ben Arfa - played 1458 - scored 72 - minutes per point 20.25 - projected score from 3000 minutes 148

Does increase my urge to get Walcott in as picking Bale and Hazard means I have to make sacrifices to get him. Interesting to see Barfa still doing alright despite what felt like a frustrating season last year.

Walcott is an absolute must I think, and he's what started me off thinking about this. He's so close to Bale's stats - if they'd played the same number of minutes (assuming the same rate of return) they'd have been literally 1 point apart.... yet there's a 2.5m difference in price.

Discount the Silva abit because of Spain duty he started with a half empty tank.
Could say the same for Mata though.

Stevie G is always going to suffer in this metric but one of his advantages is that he plays 90 minutes every match. Players like mata get pulled off with 1/2 hour left. Good work though.

Yeah, with Santi and Gerrard you've got to think - their 3000min score would be respectable, and they're likely to have another 10%-ish more minutes to improve on that.

The flipside is players like Ben Arfa, who didn't get anywhere near 3000 minutes last time and may well not this time either.

It's just useful to have a "leveller" like this sometimes... crude, but makes you think.

Great post, this really enforces something that I have been telling myself since the prices were released and that is that Bale is simply not good value at all. We are talking about IF he performs to the same level as last season then its going to cost you up to an extra 3m for 20-30 pts which in my books is not worth it and thats a very big IF he performs to the same level. RVP will bang in the same number of goals if fit (he scored more the prev season as it happens) but Bale scored ten wonder goals and was playing practically as a lone striker at times, yes he may pick up some more assists with Soldado playing but anyone who has seen Soldado play knows that he is not going to provide any assists back the other way and so only damages Bales potential for me as they aren't going to be so desperate for his magic and he will play deeper in the games they are winning instead of chasing them..........and all of that is ignoring the mental factor of having his head turned over the summer.

It was strange that last season the PL champions had no star midfielders (in fantasy terms at least), but this year I feel there could be real potential in MNU's midfield. Here are the prospects:

Michael Carrick £6.0 Projected Points: 111 Probably the only one nailed on, although not the most attacking, the new BP system should suit his style of play

Shinji Kagawa £8 PP: 133 The most promising option for me, unlucky with injury last year. If he plays in the 10 role and performs to his best he will be a must have.

Antonio Valencia £7.5 PP: 48 Overpriced, one to avoid unless he recreates his form of 2010/11

Ashley Young £7.5 PP: 55 One to avoid. Fullstop.

Nani £7.5 PP: 84 Potentially top class if Moyes can get the best from him. Overpriced, plus as with all of United's wingers, gametime looks limited.

Wilfried Zaha £6.5 PP: 78 Will be great value IF he can nail down a starting spot.

Tom Cleverley £6 PP: 89 Has failed to live up to potential, poor attacking return and limited gametime likely.

Anderson £5 PP: 14 IF his form dramatically improves, and he nails down a starting spot he will be the bargain of the season. Is that really likely though?

Powell £5 PP: 4 Same as above

Adnan Januzaj £5 PP: 6 A very promising youngster, he has been heavily involved in pre-season. One to watch, but dont expect too much PL action this season.

Jesse Lingard £4.5 PP: 3 Same as above

To conclude then, United's midfield is very much unknown, and I think it is very much a case of wait and see. I do believe that there will be brilliant value in United's midfield, I do think that a couple of Zaha, Powell, Zanuzaj, Lingard or Cleverley will nail down regular spots in the team but predicting which of them will do so would be a massive gamble. In short, WATCH THIS SPACE.

May I ask why Young is an avoid full stop? He is the only one along with Nani that has any real proven FPL class and also has the higher chance of playing OOP than the other wing options.

I'm not saying that I am picking any of them as I'm not but seems silly to be so dismissive of an England international regular.

I said to myself all last season that there HAS to be some value in their midfield at some point and it just never happened and I would not be shocked if exactly the same thing happened again this season. I believe it is most likely that the player they don't have yet who comes in will be the one to get!

So here is draft 1 of my team, thought appreciated:

    Marshall (Davis)
    Cole, Mert, Toure (Hudson, CPY4.0)
    Haz, Oscar, Couti, Nolan (Thomas)
    Sturridge, Giroud, Soldado

Plan is Cole->Coleman and Oscar->Wally for GW2 and just bench Haz for GW3.

    Any thoughts much appreciated.

I like it a lot. I don't love coutinho but he has definite quality.. I'd try to get a second keeper who might play (boruc/mannone/speroni) maybe swap Cole for terry since you are only keeping him for a week and it doesn't mess up your plans

For me the expense of your 3 starting def does too much damage to the remaining 2 and sub keeper. Maybe downgrade Mert for two 4.5's that rotate (Collins/Shaw is perfect) and then pick a starting keeper over Davis. Then you can dg Cole to Mert for GW2 if you really like him long term and use that money to upgrade Oscar to a bangwagon.

      Just food for thought.

I hope Sturridge is fit. I feel like he's crazy underrated, he was better than anybody not named RVP/Suarez/Bale when fit last year.

By Jove, I think I've got it:

    Mignolet

    Coleman - Collins - Cole*

    Walcott - Mirallas - Gerrard - Hazard*(C)

    Benteke* - Lambert - Lukaku*

    Subs: Boruc, Kim, Brayford, Debuchy

After GW1: Cole out for a nailed-on 4.5m defender with decent fixtures. Debuchy to come off bench
After GW2: Lukaku out, Soldado in
    After GW3: Wildcard
