Cardiff boss Malky Mackay bolstered his central midfield options last weekend by acquiring Gary Medel from Sevilla on a four-year deal. The 26-year-old Chile international arrives at the Bluebirds for a reported club record fee of £9.5m and follows the likes of Steven Caulker, John Brayford and Andreas Cornelius to the club as Mackay goes about restructuring his first-team squad after last term’s Championship-winning season:

Having missed out on top targets Victor Wanyama and Etienne Capoue, Mackay has turned to the combative Medel – whose nickname is “El Pitbull†– in order to add a little bite to his midfield. Due to international duties, the new boy won’t join up with Cardiff until Friday, leaving Mackay with a selection dilemma ahead of the following day’s opener at West Ham, though speaking to the club’s official website, the Bluebirds boss was full of praise for his new enforcer:

“We’re delighted to have secured the services of Gary – a tenacious and intelligent international midfielder. Having had two seasons of regular football in La Liga – with 60 odd international caps to his name and three appearances at a World Cup – his experience will be an invaluable asset to our squad. He’s played in a number of Boca v River Plate derbies in Argentina – one of the world’s biggest derby matches – and I’ve no doubt that his background and pedigree will complement our midfield group in the Barclays Premier League.”

The History

A product of the Universidad Católica youth system in his native Chile, Medel’s career began back in 2006. Over the course of three seasons, he scored 10 times in 70 league matches before joining Argentine giants Boca Juniors in July 2009. Having arrived on an initial one-year loan, Medel spent two seasons at the club, producing seven goals and an assist in 46 appearances prior to making his way to Sevilla midway through the 2010-11 campaign.

Medel more than merited his nickname during his time in La Liga, suggesting his discipline may well be an issue on these shores. The Chilean featured 90 times in all competitions for Sevilla and was dismissed on as many as seven occasions, receiving 29 cautions in just 78 league appearances. Over his first year-and-a-half he scored just twice in 46 matches but stepped up as an attacking source last term, with six goals and three assists in 32 La Liga matches. The powerfully-built ball-winner has also turned out for his country 51 times and found the net on four occasions.

The Prospects

Set to sit in front of the Bluebirds’ defence as part of Mackay’s three-man central midfield, Medel will be tasked with breaking up opponents’ play and allowing other more creative players the chance to flourish. Given his hot-headed approach, he’s likely to rack up more yellows and reds than attacking returns in the season ahead and, as such, it’s difficult to make a case for his consideration as a Fantasy asset; expect to see him feature prominently in our Suspension Tightrope articles as the campaign heats up instead.

The possible upside is that his tenacious style of play, allied with the acquisition of Steven Caulker, may boost Cardiff’s defensive prospects as Mackay attempts to build upon an approach which harvested 18 clean sheets in the Championship last time out.

Compared to other Bluebirds options, though, Medel’s appeal seems limited – Fantasy managers looking for a route into Mackay’s side will perhaps turn to Bo-Kyung Kim as a more enticing alternative. Likely to be utilised as the most advanced option through the middle, it’s difficult to look beyond the Korean – having scored in three of the final four summer friendlies, he approaches the season as the Welsh side’s in-form player, with a share of set-pieces making him a standout option. A kind price across the Fantasy games merely heightens Kim’s appeal, with many eyeing him up as a cheap fifth midfielder.

While Kim is likely to provide the class and guile in the middle of the park, Medel will no doubt grab his fair share of headlines. Sent off in a derby against Real Betis last term, he was also dismissed against Atletico Madrid after belting Diego Costa – having previously broken the arm of Tiago Mendes earlier in the match. Fireworks can be expected, then, and, while there’s no doubting Medel will add plenty resilience to the middle of the park, Mackay will be hoping his new signing keeps a cool head long enough to make an impact for all the right reasons. Most Fantasy managers are likely to keep their distance.

      Not getting a defender?

Given Mourinho's defensive record at Chelsea the first time, and the quality of their back line, do you not think that missing out on a defender is a mistake?

This. I've come around to thinking, that given we're so spoit for attacking options also, two Chelsea defenders + midfielder/Lukaku may be the optimum pick.

No, but think back to City v United at Old Trafford two seasons ago. Kompany bags the winner in a 1-0 victory for a 15 point haul. Countless on here benched him as he was away to United. If you own a premium defender, start him always. End of.

Is Soldado too much of a risk as it his his first season and it may take him time to adjust? Spurs have such a god bunch of early fixtures. I keep swapping between him and Giroud. Cant decide.

    B) Soldado

His game is not one that I think will need too much time as he won't be adapting it! He hasn't got a creative bone in his body. He is a box player only (didn't score out of the box last season) and is exactly the type of player that Spurs have been missing.

Also he has international and Champs League experience and so has good exposure outside of Spain.

He is also a big strong and aggressive lump and so I don't think that he will suffer what the majority of foreign players do which is the physicality of the Prem league.

Also at 26m investment he is guaranteed to get max game time which a lot of other strikers can't say.

      Pretty much a coin-flip I'm afraid.

Going from purely the fact that Pardew's talked up Mbiwa more and he started the last pre-season game with Colo, I'd say 55% him, Taylor 45%.

Personally don't like Silva too much - I know it's becoming a cliché but I fear he "assists the assist".

I would consider downgrading him to someone like Snodgrass, then upgrading Brayford and Mannone.

Other than Silva->Coutinho I had to double check my team twice to make sure that we weren't identical but other than a couple of coin flip choices that I made we are on the money.

Great team and good luck. Do you plan on just benching Hazard or are you concerned about having his value on the bench and even that his value will drop leading up to GW4?

I'm having a problem deciding on my Chelsea exposure for GW1 and probably over-thinking! I currently have Ivanovic (but will probably switch to Cole to reduce the risk of him not playing 2 games), Hazard and Lukaku. The earlier article on Lukaku was interesting but not entirely persuasive. Is it better to have 3 players in GW1 given that I will want to transfer out a Chelsea defender in GW2 to create funds for say Lukaku>Sturridge transfer? Should I sacrifice potential Chelsea clean sheets and just go for 2 players? Would appreciate keen analysis!

Have exactly the same thoughts as you mate.......but what I would say is stick with Ivanovic over Cole. Even if JM plays Az at RB for the Villa game, I think there's far more chance of him playing Bertrand and Ivan switching to CB to cover off a rest of either Cahill, Luiz or certainly Terry. Although he could, I can't see him making 8 or 9 changes ; continuity is one of his TMs

Liverpool and Newcastle took part in a friendly behind closed doors earlier today which finished 3-1 to Liverpool. As it was behind closed doors information is scarce, but I have found this from https://twitter.com/neilhancox

    - The Liverpool team (at least in the second half) : Jones, McLaughlin, Sama, Kelly, Flanagan, Henderson, Alberto, Ibe, Borini, Teixeira, Sturridge. Apparently Agger started the match

    - Liverpool's set-up included two holding midfielders in second half, Henderson and Alberto. Teixeira was playing in the hole. Borini on the left, Ibe on the right

    - The Newcastle team was apparently strong, I assume a mixture of u21s and senior squad like Liverpool's, but it included: Tiote, Obertan, Taylor, Krul, Ben Arfa, Anita

    - Alberto scored after good link up play with Sturridge, Sturridge himself scored Liverpool's other 2 goals (apparently) with one of them being a penalty

    - No idea who Newcastle's scorer was

    - Liverpool's stand out performers were McLaughlin, Jones, Ibe and Sturridge

    - Sturridge was apparently brilliant in the second half and looked lively throughout, Ibe is "a class act and deserves a starting place on Saturday"

    - Apparently Borini was "atrocious"

    - Liverpool looked fitter and moved the ball well.

    - Having played in this game and the Celtic game, it looks as if Sturridge will almost definitely be ready for Saturday.

Again this is information mostly taken from https://twitter.com/neilhancox All I've done is write it in a way that it makes it more sense 🙂

Obviously one of the key points of this is that Sturridge played and played well at that, scoring 2 goals including a penalty, so he looks like he could be good option from the start, or as a Benteke replacement after GW1.

Cheers matey, I haven't heard word from the game yet but I expect to later in the day so I will be sure to share my findings with you. Ibe has practically been our player of the preseason which is great news as if we can pick up a lot of game time between him and Raheem. Rodgers is clearly still in the market for a left winger though so I hope he looks at Ince again, we would really have a monopoly on a lot of the best young English attacking potential then.

Well I don't know about you guys, but RVP has been the burning question for me, I have made so many drafts with and without him, I'm a united fan so I finally caved in.
But is he worth 14 mil????
    Boruc/Mannone
    Ivan/Toure/Coleman/Chester/Brayford
    Coutinho/Walcott/Hazard/Barkley/Morisson
    RVP/Lukako/Dzeko
The plan is to rotate Morisson and Barkley, but how much game time will they get that's the question.

Just can't see him being worth it. He'd need to get 6+every game-week to feel happy about the spend. Another disadvantage I see with him is you almost always have to captain him.

The rvp dilemna, people seem to overlook that there's more strikers this season likely to come close to his stats for the season which wasn't the case last season, where Rooney, Torres, Tevez, Aguero, Adebayor didn't perform as they have done in the season before. I'd rather have Sturridge and Soldado than RVP and Anelka.

My only problem with having both Sturridge and Soldado is that I also want a Liverpool midfielder and Spurs midfielder, so I'm spreading myself a bit thin...

Oh they do, the England squad will be full of them!

Not no gametime but with the additions of KDB and Schurrle, there's a lot of competition for these 3 attacking mid spots, and he's behind Hazard and Mata.

Unless he could drop back to CM? In which case there's still loads of rotation with Lamps, Ramires, Essien, Mikel etc. and he's less of a goal threat.

Well, he could. In all probability, a defender's point ceiling will be clean sheets, whereas Oscar *could* score or assist several.

I'd say a defender is more likely than Oscar to get 6-8 points whilst Oscar is more likely than a defender to get 12+ points.

So it's whether you want a safer 6-8 points or shoot for the stars.

      1. Why would Rooney want to go to Arsenal? Not going to compete for PL/CL and would be admitting RVP was better than him.

      2. Why would Man U want Podolski? Too attacking for their 442/4411 on the left, not better than Hernandez/Welbeck up top.

    Lallana (or gaston)
    Hoolahan
    Morrison (wba)

Looking for a good 11m combo for 2 mids.

    - Kim/Koren....having both makes the mid look very weak.
    - Lallana Kim...they rotate from gw2-6 but cardiff home games are everton and spurs
    - Lallana Koren...good players but dont rotate AT all!
    - Morrison koren..rotate Perfectly! but gametime security with morrison?
    - brunt koren...rotate perfectly! and cheaper but gametime security with brunt?
    - lallana jerdinyak...rotate great but have never seen jerdi and thomas is injured
    - lallana hoolahan...my winning combo! so far atleast 🙂

There's aren't really good midfield combos for 11m. While some of them may sound goo on paper, there will be a lot of 2 pointers in there.

Lallana's an interesting one, missed quite a bit of last season and has barely been talked about on here but he has good fixtures and chipped in with a few goals/assists last season.
