Crystal Palace boss Ian Holloway continued to strengthen his first-team squad earlier this week with the acquisition of Marouane Chamakh from Arsenal. The 29-year-old arrives at Selhurst Park on a one-year deal and is the third striker to be added to the Eagles’ ranks this summer, following Dwight Gayle and Kevin Phillips to the club.

Holloway was clearly thrilled to snap up the Moroccan, whose contract will be extended beyond a single season should Palace remain in the Premier League. The Eagles boss revealed he sees Chamakh as an integral member of his first XI and is looking forward to getting the player’s career back on track after a frustrating time at the Emirates:

“It’s a massive thing for me to get him in as I can now build the team around him, because he is a fantastic player who can drift and float and he’s good in the air, so I have got to build a squad around that now and hopefully I can get him going. I usually do alright with people whose career is faltering a little bit. I’ll love him up, work with him and hopefully I can get him playing the way he did when he first went to Arsenal. There was nothing wrong with him then when he scored eight in nine, but I wouldn’t fancy being Van Persie’s understudy because it couldn’t have been fun.”

The History

A product of the Bordeaux youth academy, Chamakh made his debut for the club back in the 2002/03 campaign. Over the course of eight seasons with the French outfit, he produced 56 goals and 24 assists over 230 league matches and also impressed on the European stage, with 17 goals and three assists across 49 appearances in the Champions League and UEFA Cup.

Snapped up by Arsenal for the start of the 2010/11 campaign, Chamakh failed to find his feet under Arsene Wenger – as Holloway mentioned above, a certain Dutchman prevented the new boy from establishing himself as a first-choice option for the Gunners. Nevertheless, 11 goals and five assists from 18 starts and 11 sub appearances wasn’t too poor a return in his debut Premier League season, though Chamakh drifted out of Wenger’s plans the following year; 10 of his 11 matches arrived from the bench, with just a single goal scored. A loan move to West Ham midway through 2012/13 also proved disastrous – he was fielded just three times by Sam Allardyce before returning to his parent club.

On the international stage, Chamakh has turned out for his country 35 times, producing eight goals and three assists.

The Prospects

While it’s easy to dismiss Chamakh after his miserable time at Arsenal, the statistics show he was never really given a chance to nail down a regular role by Wenger. Prior to his arrival at the Emirates, he’d notched double figures in each of his last two seasons in Ligue 1, with 10 assists also accrued across his final two years in France. Like almost any forward, confidence is key to his performances and his new manager’s show of faith already seems to have made an impact on the Moroccan:

“I’m really happy to be here, to be signing for Crystal Palace. To work with the manager, I think it will be easier. He changed my mind about this club and the project, so I am happy to work with him and to meet the other players at Crystal Palace. I hope it will be good this year. I hope I will bring my experience from the Premier League and I will do my best and talk to the players to be happy this season.”

With last season’s top scorer Glenn Murray sidelined due to a long-term knee injury, Holloway clearly needs reinforcements up front. Having mainly utilised a 4-2-3-1 formation since his arrival at Selhurst Park, the Palace boss trialled a 4-4-2 as recently as last weekend against Lazio and admitted he may roll out this system over the season ahead – potentially partnering Chamakh’s aerial ability and power with Gayle’s speed and penchant for playing on the shoulder of the last defender.

A regular role up top looks on the cards, then, and with spot-kicks possibly up for grabs in light of Murray’s absence, Chamakh’s security of starts may well appeal to those on the lookout for a cheap third striker, with the Moroccan setting you back just 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

With three of their first four home games seeing Sunderland, Swansea and Fulham pay visit, Holloway’s side have a decent run opening run in front of their own fans and a home/away rotation with Hull over Gameweeks 2-8 (NOR, SUN, CAR, SWA, WHM, AVL, FUL) looks a viable tactic for those eyeing up an attack-minded option amongst Steve Bruce’s charges.

No. Worst centre back they have IMO. I think Ivan will play right back first game, and centre back second game. So depending on Luiz fitness, I think Terry and Luiz, then Luiz and Ivanovic.

IMO Terry is a shoe in to play 90 in both. I expect him to feature there for most of the 38 league fixtures.

People must forget the love Mourinhio has for him and vice versa.

Why Tonev now? Tonev after GW3 blank - fine... Tonev now? for DGW? meh

      h8 Anelka

why get van Ginkel and put him on bench? waste of a space; waste of Chelse slot

    Sky Captain scenario

Can anyone enlighten me on this... The way I read it is if l were to captain Sturridge on Saturday then transfer him out for Lukaku he would then become my captain for game on Sunday and Wednesday. Is this right, would both captains score double?

However if I captain RVP on Saturday, then change it on Sunday to Hazard, this would count as two captains in the one game week. Would I be able to change it the following Saturday for that gameweek or would I have to start with Hazard?

Yes just make sure you do the transfer or C change before the first prem. match of the day.

You can transfer in a player to replace a C and he will get the double points without you losing one of your 2 C choices per G/W. You can feesibly have a diff. captain over 4 days.

      or so they tell me...

You can make one captaincy change in a game week, the game week runs from Saturday at 00.01am until the following Friday.

Captain changes must be made before the earliest Premier League kick off that day to be effective to score double points for your selected captain in the Premier League games played on that day. Any captain changes made after the earliest kick off will carry over and start scoring from the next match day of the game week.

In last season's Sky game you had to make the captaincy change before the first Premier League match of the game week was scheduled to kick off, usually 12:45pm or 3pm on a Saturday, and this would be your registered captain for the whole of the respective game week. This season you do not have to make the captaincy change before the first Premier League match of the game week, you could make it before the earliest scheduled Premier League match on a Sunday an! d score double points for your captain in the games played that day. If there was a game played on a Monday, you could wait and make the captaincy change before the first Premier League match scheduled that day and score double points for your selected captain in Monday's match.

If your captain was already playing on Saturday, you could then change the captaincy using a captaincy change before the earliest scheduled kick off on Sunday and also score double points for your captain on the Sunday. This would use up your one available captaincy change for that respective game week and any further captaincy changes you try to make in that game week will only become effective from the start of the following game week.

However, if you use a transfer to remove your captain, the incoming player will replace him as captain and this will not use up the one captaincy change that is allowed for the game week. For example, if you had your existing captain already playi! ng on a Saturday, he would score double points on that day. Yo! u could then transfer him out for a game on Sunday, before the earliest Premier League game played on the Sunday, and the incoming player taking over as captain would score double points. You could then use your weekly captaincy change to change the captain for a game on Monday and score double points again for 3 seperate players.

This weekend Wilshire most likely as Santi is travelling to Ecuador. Moving forward he may share the role with Santi and Rosicky and play deeper.

I wouldn't be so sure, if Ramsay is fit anyway. Ramsay and Arteta have a good partnership going in the mid and Santi is often moved to the wing to make way for Wilshire in the hole - at the expense of Podolski.

Well, not me for one. Can see almost everyone having Haz, (c) too looks obvious. Wally a big fav, but then it all goes a bit subjective. I wouldn't want to see Cout play a couple of games before committing, and I'm not really excited by Snodders.

My punts with Haz/Wally are Oscar, plus that Belgian OPP in Scouserland.

BUt there's plenty of good arguments for both, plus other combos, just have to pursue your own steer.

i had this as the back 7 for a while...

    A: Migs - Davis
    Ivan - Turner - Zab - Brayford - Parr

Decided I was hamstringing myself (lack of goalie cover and double cheapo defender) so tweaked it....

    B: Migs - Boruc
    Ivan - Turner - Coleman - Brayford - Cuellar

A or B look better now?

I've just realised the only Chelsea midfielder who will get 180 is Ramirez. Ergo I shall select him as my only Chelsea midfielder, take a punt on Lukaku and select captain fantastic as my third Chelsea player. Frees up ever so much cash also and puts me in decent shape for GW2s and 3. Here's hoping Haz doesn't rip it up. On that, at least if Lampard plays, he's off peno's.

    A couple of questions:

    1) Dzeco or Lambert?

    2) I have Terry in my team for the DGW. Would you stick with that or try and find 0.5 to get Ivanovic?

      1) Don't know. I love Dzeko as a player, but he's just too risky a pick imo. At a minimum, I want 90 mins from my 11 GW1 players. No guarantee at all with him.

      2) Keep Terry. See comments above at top of page.

Ladbrokes have betting on fantasy football.

Just put £5 e/w on Mirallas to be the top scoring midfielder, points wise, this year.

Top 4 payed for e/w at 1/4 odds. At 50-1 think its a pretty good bet myself.
