Crystal Palace boss Ian Holloway continued to strengthen his first-team squad earlier this week with the acquisition of Marouane Chamakh from Arsenal. The 29-year-old arrives at Selhurst Park on a one-year deal and is the third striker to be added to the Eagles’ ranks this summer, following Dwight Gayle and Kevin Phillips to the club.

Holloway was clearly thrilled to snap up the Moroccan, whose contract will be extended beyond a single season should Palace remain in the Premier League. The Eagles boss revealed he sees Chamakh as an integral member of his first XI and is looking forward to getting the player’s career back on track after a frustrating time at the Emirates:

“It’s a massive thing for me to get him in as I can now build the team around him, because he is a fantastic player who can drift and float and he’s good in the air, so I have got to build a squad around that now and hopefully I can get him going. I usually do alright with people whose career is faltering a little bit. I’ll love him up, work with him and hopefully I can get him playing the way he did when he first went to Arsenal. There was nothing wrong with him then when he scored eight in nine, but I wouldn’t fancy being Van Persie’s understudy because it couldn’t have been fun.”

The History

A product of the Bordeaux youth academy, Chamakh made his debut for the club back in the 2002/03 campaign. Over the course of eight seasons with the French outfit, he produced 56 goals and 24 assists over 230 league matches and also impressed on the European stage, with 17 goals and three assists across 49 appearances in the Champions League and UEFA Cup.

Snapped up by Arsenal for the start of the 2010/11 campaign, Chamakh failed to find his feet under Arsene Wenger – as Holloway mentioned above, a certain Dutchman prevented the new boy from establishing himself as a first-choice option for the Gunners. Nevertheless, 11 goals and five assists from 18 starts and 11 sub appearances wasn’t too poor a return in his debut Premier League season, though Chamakh drifted out of Wenger’s plans the following year; 10 of his 11 matches arrived from the bench, with just a single goal scored. A loan move to West Ham midway through 2012/13 also proved disastrous – he was fielded just three times by Sam Allardyce before returning to his parent club.

On the international stage, Chamakh has turned out for his country 35 times, producing eight goals and three assists.

The Prospects

While it’s easy to dismiss Chamakh after his miserable time at Arsenal, the statistics show he was never really given a chance to nail down a regular role by Wenger. Prior to his arrival at the Emirates, he’d notched double figures in each of his last two seasons in Ligue 1, with 10 assists also accrued across his final two years in France. Like almost any forward, confidence is key to his performances and his new manager’s show of faith already seems to have made an impact on the Moroccan:

“I’m really happy to be here, to be signing for Crystal Palace. To work with the manager, I think it will be easier. He changed my mind about this club and the project, so I am happy to work with him and to meet the other players at Crystal Palace. I hope it will be good this year. I hope I will bring my experience from the Premier League and I will do my best and talk to the players to be happy this season.”

With last season’s top scorer Glenn Murray sidelined due to a long-term knee injury, Holloway clearly needs reinforcements up front. Having mainly utilised a 4-2-3-1 formation since his arrival at Selhurst Park, the Palace boss trialled a 4-4-2 as recently as last weekend against Lazio and admitted he may roll out this system over the season ahead – potentially partnering Chamakh’s aerial ability and power with Gayle’s speed and penchant for playing on the shoulder of the last defender.

A regular role up top looks on the cards, then, and with spot-kicks possibly up for grabs in light of Murray’s absence, Chamakh’s security of starts may well appeal to those on the lookout for a cheap third striker, with the Moroccan setting you back just 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

With three of their first four home games seeing Sunderland, Swansea and Fulham pay visit, Holloway’s side have a decent run opening run in front of their own fans and a home/away rotation with Hull over Gameweeks 2-8 (NOR, SUN, CAR, SWA, WHM, AVL, FUL) looks a viable tactic for those eyeing up an attack-minded option amongst Steve Bruce’s charges.

Do people still think Palace will be all out attack this season as a result of Blackpool's Premier League performances under Holloway?

    Just checked the stats:

Crystal Palace under Holloway: played 37, scored 52, conceded 45 (average result 1.4 - 1.2)
    Blackpool under Holloway: played 161, scored 268, conceded 247 (average result 1.7 - 1.5)

That's quite a difference, I doubt it affects many people's teams but I wonder whether people have misjudged Palace's style - maybe they'll grind out a few 1-0s before the season's out?

I think Palace and Hull will both go right back down. Palace have lost their best offensive star in Zaha and replaced him with Thomas (!!)

Chamahk now in the mix and Galye who was relegated from the Championship last season, I think it will be a long season for Palace

I imagine they'll struggle too, I'm just debating the way in which they'll go about it - Blackpool tried to win matches in style, maybe Holloway is once bitten twice shy?

I have to admit that since doubts arose over Brayford being nailed on I have avoided the 3 promoted teams all together and I don't have any £4.0m bench fodder in my squad at all. There are just too many good players with great rotations at £4.5m

I'm sticking to my preseason guns and getting some 4.0 defenders in for the early part of the season - I wavered for a while after the prices came out but I'm going to have the courage of my convictions.

I realised that I actually had the front 8 that I wanted regardless of funds (other than RVP) and so I had the extra money to upgrade as I think Parr/Chester -> Murner/Collins is a much better option than say Merts/Kos->Zab

May I ask if you have a couple of Primes in there to go with the 4.0's?

              Right now my def is: 5.5 - 5.0 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.5

Its not down to the levels of an uber but the rotation options are rather sexy!

Sure, it's currently 6.5, 5.5, 5.0, 4.5, 4.0 but the 6.5 (Ivanovic) is likely to become a 4.0 after GW1 which will free up funds which I'll squander elsewhere.

See I had something similar to this but realised that I couldn't and wouldn't spend any more money on my front 8 and so decided to disperse that Ivan money across the line to start the season as once the season started I didn't want to be using transfers at the back.

(that and I think that picking a def who is far from guaranteed to play twice let alone get 2 x CS's is a wasted transfer early doors. But each to their own on that one)

That thought crossed my mind - a Palace 4.0 defender may be just as worthwhile as a Cardiff/Hull equivalent. Not a massive statement but Palace's early fixtures are much better than Cardiff's and their defenders seem pretty popular picks...

Cheers, Blackpool were a lot of fun with the way they played and that translated into some real FPL attacking bargains but I think Holloway may be a little more cautious this time round. The first few weeks could set the tone for their season I guess - they have some winnable home games which Holloway's Blackpool would have gone at all guns blazing. I have a suspicion we'll see Palace being a bit more conservative personally. I hope I'm wrong! 🙂

What will your front 7 then be? I'm hopefully having:

      Walcott Hazard Oscar Mirallas
      Soldado Lukaku Sturridge

It's very close to call between Giroud & Soldado, I think Theo will suffice for Arsenal.

        Walcott Hazard Coutinho Mirallas
        Dzeko Lukaka ***********

I originally had RVP, but double gameweekers forced my hand. I'd be playing bench fodder too often trying to re-assemble my ideal team, so I ditched him for a more solid outfit.

Lukaka and Dzeko to be ditched in a couple of weeks and hopefully bring in RVP and Bony

    RMT out of 10 please.

    Mignolet--Lewis

    Collins*--Koscielny--M.Turner--Ivanovic--Brayford

    Walcott--Mirallas--Snodgrass--Hazard--Thomas*

    Soldado--Negredo--Lukaku

*Will have to monitor Collins and Thomas' injury before GW1 begins.

    - Plan is to downgrade Ivanovic and Lukaku so can eventually upgrade Negredo after City's first 3 easy fixture to RVP (captain) for Utd's easy GW4 vs. Palace at home.

I think it would be easier to bring in RVP by having Snodgrass/Negredo compared to Coutinho/Dzeko.. That is the main reason I've got for this option.

For some reason I feel that he would get most minuted out of all the City forwards in the first few fixtures.. He probably won't start all 3 games but I can see him starting with Dzeko in GW1 because lack of match fitness for Aguero. Then maybe come off the bench in GW2 and start in GW3 vs. Hull at home?

      First choice.
When the friendlies come around, players with any type of knock or even those who really want to start on the weekend for their club, can tend to create an injury. Not always the case but the suspicions do arise.

So rubbish then lol. With 3 x Chel you are going to either need a strong bench or else you are simply going to lose any points you gain in GW1 by GW4 in transfers or missing players. No back up to Cech is a major issue for a start.

ust a couple of queries if any scouts are around regarding the Team News section which I find useful and use on a regular basis:

    1) I see Cazorla isn't included in the Arsenal predicted lineup, with a front 6 of Walcott Ramsey Arteta Podolski / Wilshere / Giroud. Sure about this? I assume the starting lineup for the City game was an influence but Ox started too as did Podolski and neither were first choice in their positions at the end of last season (Podolski started ahead of Giroud at CF in the final game but we're expecting Giroud to be back there). I guess the other factor is the Spanish friendly, though I'm not sure how much gametime he'll actually get. Overall I would think he would be played if possible and he has had a long post Confed Cup break.

    2) Okore ahead of Clark in the Aston Villa predicted team?

Seems strange we would bench possibly our most talented player (Wilshere's still young) on opening day if he wasn't injured. Doesn't really seem like a luxury we can afford.

I think that Okore is expected to be first pick "going forward" but currently lacks gametime. So I would favour Clark for 1/2 games if you want a dgw Villa defender.

Cheers, yeah Okore has only had two 45 min preseason appearances due to injury earlier in preseason. Even Baker has received praise for his form in preseason though, and there's wild rumours Vlaar's place is under threat from Okore, so it admittedly is a minefield in central defence for Villa.

A minefield we luckily are extremely unlikely to want to visit.

Hi Isacki, I'm no scout but I think you've probably nailed the thinking in 1 - the Spanish friendly is likely to be a factor. If I'm honest I'd expect Cazorla to play but if Mourinho had doubts over playing his Spaniards after that journey then it seems plausible Wenger would have the same thoughts (albeit squad depth is slightly different) It's obviously only a best guess but hopefully the 'Latest News' section of the Team News will be populated soon and tell us more.

      Re point 2 - I don't see either 😕

    Hey oh.

Do you think ive got enough in the goalscoring/assist department. Defence and Gk's are solid and sorted with much planning for week after week.

    Hazard / Michu / Coutinho / Wilshere / Miralles

    Lukaku / Anelka / Giroud.

Is it enough? No RVP, No Rooney, No aguero, No soldado. Should I downgrade a Michu and upgrade a Giroud?

Because most, including myself, DON'T think he will start regularly, and for the money you can get someone nailed on! And coverage is not actually a real thing, if it was then over the course of last season at least one Man U midfielder would have been good value whilst RVP was banging in 26 goals but it just did not happen.
