Mikel Arteta has been ruled out of Arsenal’s home game with Villa. Andre Villas-Boas is set to be without Gareth Bale for Spurs’ trip to Palace, where Jerome Thomas is sidelined for a couple of weeks for the hosts, Liverpool have good news on the defensive front and Southampton are still doubtful over Nathaniel Clyne and Luke Shaw.

Our team news section has been updated on the back of the latest press conferences and will be refreshed as today unfolds – keep an eye on this and our twitter feed ahead of what is set to be a hectic next 24-hours for Fantasy managers:

Arsene Wenger will head into tomorrow’s match against Aston Villa without the influential Mikel Arteta. Speaking to the press in the last hour, the Gunners boss admitted he is uncertain when the Spaniard will return, though according to The Mail, the playmaker could be out for up to six weeks with the injury – potentially handing spot-kicks duties to Lukas Podolski and forcing Jack Wilshere into a deeper role alongside fit-again Aaron Ramsey in front of the back-four.

Although he ruled out the likes of Thomas Vermaelen, Nacho Monreal and Ryo Miyaichi, Wenger failed to mention Theo Walcott, Bacary Sagna or Santi Cazorla this morning. The first two had picked up minor problems on international duty, while Cazorla was late flying back from Spain’s match in Ecuador amid worries of fatigue – Fantasy managers will be optimistic the trio are fine, then, though some confirmation would have gone a long way to easing our fears as we finalise our squads.

Elsewhere in north London, Andre Villas-Boas looks set to be without Gareth Bale for Tottenham’s trip to Crystal Palace on Sunday. The Welshman hasn’t played for three weeks due to injury and, when asked whether he would be available to face Ian Holloway’s side, Villas-Boas replied:

“No, because he’s been out injured for most of pre-season. He was involved in the games against Brentford and Swindon but not any others, for different reasons; pulled a muscle in his gluteus that prevented him from being involved for two weeks and he’s been complaining of pain in the foot. I think the most natural thing is to see him not involved against Palace.”

With Bale out of the equation, it’s possible that Gylfi Sigurdsson could tuck in behind Roberto Soldado, with Nacer Chadli on the left, if the visitors line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, though the Belgian has also been fielded in “the hole” during pre-season. Alternatively, Villas-Boas may opt for the 4-3-3 shape he preferred at Porto – a scenario that could see Paulinho as the most advanced central option, with Sandro, Mousa Dembele and new boy Etienne Capoue offering plenty dynamism in the middle of the park.

Brendan Rodgers has received some positive news ahead of Liverpool’s early kick-off with Stoke tomorrow. The Reds boss expects both Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel to be fit to face the Potters, though while the Dane will return to the starting XI, Skrtel is likely to warm the bench – Kolo Toure is firmly ahead of the Slovakian in the pecking order and has started every pre-season friendly he has been available for.

Martin Jol will hand Alex Kacaniklic a late fitness test as Fulham make their way to Sunderland. The Cottagers boss has admitted Adel Taarabt’s fitness is still an issue and with the Moroccan only likely to make the bench, Kacaniklic could be in line for a starting role on the left wing providing he gets the all clear after impressing in pre-season, according to his manager.

Southampton full-back pair Nathaniel Clyne and Luke Shaw both remain doubts for tomorrow’s trip to West Brom. Speaking to the press yesterday, Mauricio Pochettino revealed the pair are making good progress:

“We’re very happy because Luke has responded well throughout the week. With one training session left tomorrow, I think he could be in the 18 players called up for the game against West Brom. Clyney has been recovering from a little niggle that he’s had since Austria. [His involvement] depends on the training session tomorrow but, if he’s not in the group for West Brom, he’ll be most probably available for the game after. “

Clyne pulled out of the midweek England Under 21 game against Scotland after being withdrawn in last weekend’s friendly win over Real Sociedad, while Clyne has yet to feature over the summer. Pochettino may turn to Danny Fox and Callum Chambers in the event of any potential absence and the Saints boss also conceded he has yet to assess the fitness of Gaston Ramirez and Maya Yoshida, who both featured in the Japan v Uruguay friendly on Wednesday.

Michael Laudrup was awaiting the return of Wilfried Bony yesterday, after Swansea’s new forward turned out for Ivory Coast against Mexico in New Jersey in the early hours of Thursday morning. Laudrup – who will be without Jonathan de Guzman due to concussion – seemed far from happy with the situation as he prepares for tomorrow evening’s match against United:

“Bony will be back late on Thursday with jetlag, which is not great. To play for your country is great and the club should be proud of all our internationals, but having a friendly three days before the start of the season is strange. This is the last year when it will happen fortunately. That’s an intelligent decision.”

Ian Holloway handed Fantasy managers a heads-up after announcing Jerome Thomas is ruled out for two weeks with the ankle problem that saw him limp off against Lazio after just 22 minutes last weekend. Yannick Bolasie added to Palace’s boss with a hamstring injury that will keep him out “for some time”, according to the Eagles boss. With his options on the flanks limited, Holloway could keep faith with Jonny Williams as an option out wide – fortunately, he comes in at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the same price as Thomas, and looks secure for game time in light of yesterday’s news.

A lot debate over RVP vs Non-RVP teams; having RVP means another cheap striker instead of 2 "premium" strikers. For eg, RVP + Anelka instead of any of the many combos being thrown around including players like Soldado/Negredo/Sturridge/Giroud. Will leave you with an additional million also to enable one other upgrade, say Kim over a 4.5, or Ivanovic/Cole over Terry, or Kosc over a decent 4.5.

Outside of that, the other 12 players in your squad are (or can be) virtually the same.

I'm a bit surprised that non-RVP team holders comment on how drastically having RVP impacts the rest of the team. I personally have chosen to go for him from the off, and the rest of my team looks as good as most of the teams I've seen posted on here.

Of course it can all go wrong, RVP may underperform, Anelka may not play as much as I'd like, but in two gws I can have them out for whichever two fwds I want.

Is there really that large a difference?

I think the key to having RVP is whether you intend on captaining him or not, especially for the first 3 weeks anyway. If you don't see yourself putting the armband on him for this period then bring him in and captain him for GW4 v Palace.

        +1
If you don't have RVP, how do you propose getting him in later without a WC?

        A) By saving the cash (thereby removing any benefit of not having him)
        B) By saving up a transfer the week prior to try to avoid taking a substantial points hit or
        C) Take a substantial points hit

as far as I can see.

Or you can hope Robin Relaint underperforms.

I think the issue of getting the captaincy right is more important. I did relatively bad last year, wo having RvP before boxing day, but that was more or less because I consistently went for the wrong captain, i.e. captained Bale, Hazard, Suarez et al at the wrong times.

You can do well wo RvP, and you could do well with him, simple as that.

Though 12 players are the same, the two others that aren't are very important.

I've seen RVP teams where the manager was forced to play cardiff/palace midfielders week in and week out while having three 4.0 defenders or Anelka.

If you're stuck in that situation, you're effectively playing with 13 men every week, as two of them will likely only ever get you two points. You could argue that RVP does the work of two players, but that still only brings you to 14 men each week.

And beyond that, it's a matter of flexibility. With that much money tied up in RVP, you lose a lot of transfer power when it comes time to buy those other bandwagon players. I think this is the most important reason for advocating a non-RVP team.

With Soldado, Benteke, and Sturridge as my front three, I can afford to transfer in virtually any striker in one gameweek. Just swap out the one that is failing to perform and I'm done.

With RVP, Anelka, and your generic 7.5 that comes with them, how will you transfer in Soldado when he starts killing it? The answer is not very simple.

      Just my thoughts.

"With Soldado, Benteke, and Sturridge as my front three, I can afford to transfer in virtually any striker in one gameweek"

        - Except RVP. Also, if any of those players approach RVP's reliability for points early on they'll rocket in price as the bandwagon rolls on. You may find that actually, you can't afford to get them as the money has been distributesd to widely.

With RVP, if he is underperforming, you could transfer him out for any other player bar none. If he is not, there is nobody else that can touch him. Yet.

Then your choice is clear. My original point is not to debate which combo of strikers will do better, that is all down to personal choice, it was mainly to state that with both at 19M, then the rest of the team can be virtually the same. And transition between th two combos (RVP+Anelka to two of Sturridge/Soldado/Giroud/Negredo) is a two week fix.

RVP still has 43% ownership. the only way he will rise in price is if he gets a hat trick or a huge point haul. I just have to hope that doesn't happen.

When a lot of the n00bs get rid of him for getting less points than a 9.0 mill striker you can then get him for a little cheaper if you feel he is needed.

I for one will be staying clear of RVP. And getting Evra in GW4. He has the clean sheet bonus and I can see Man UTD being quite sturdy at the back with Moyes. He also provides a lot of attacking threat and at 7.5 cheaper. Hello!

        Without RVP the midfield suffers

This is the best I can do to fit him in....

        Mignolet (Mannone)
        Ivanovic-Coleman-Koscielny (Collins, B.Tuner)
        Coutinho-Snodgrass-Downing-Hazard (Morrison)

It is a very tough one, I'm not sure, but currently I'm doing:

      Sturridge, Silva, Lambert over
      RVP, Snodgrass and Maiga.

Simply because I feel the top 3 will get more points, regardless of captaincy, for the first 3 weeks at least.
      GW4: may change back.

Feel this is the best strategy for now.

    Mingolet (Boruc)
    Mertesacker, Coleman, Shaw, Collins (Brayford)
    Hazard, Walcott, Nolan, Snodgrass, Coutinho
    Soldado, Lukaku, Dzeko

No RVP because of United's fixtures and 14.0 seems excessive. Will take out Lukaku after GW1.

    Thoughts please FFS pundits?

So people have been favouring spending midfield/forward players rather than on defenders. I'm not quite sure how the BPS works, but if you use that as your filter on the player transfers, you get more defenders over 200, and even over the 150 mark than both midfielders and forwards. Can anyone explain that to me? Not exactly sure what it means.

According to reputable bookmaker (WH), Alvaro Negredo is the most likely to score GW1, at 8/13. He is also the most likely to score a hatrick.

Demba Ba and Fernando Torres both have shorter odds than Lukaku to score vs Hull?....

How do you rate Spurs without Bale ? Will they create enough chances to have Soldado for the first match ?
I actually want to have Soldado & Sturridge , don't know which order !

Far too much spent in defence. Baines is really pushing it when you have RVP. Consider Coleman @ 5.0m and upgrade Tonev.

I also prefer Migs + Rat to Jaask + Toure.

Most people seem to think having RVP means you're getting Anelka by default. But this is the team I plan to have after the DGW:

    Boruc, £4m

    Zaba, Coleman, Collins, Shaw, Brayford

    Walcott, Mirallas, Nolan, Snoddy, Kim

    RVP, Soldado, Giroud/Bent/J Rod

If I pick Bent/J Rod that leaves me £2/2.5m to spend as I see fit. I have a pretty decent defence and a mid packed with value picks (Nolan only dropped off form whilst Caroll was injured). I may well spend that extra money on Mignolet and have an overall solid squad.

See my team above, I don't have Anelka in my front 3 with RVP.
Your midfield could be better, I have Wally and Hazard + Mirallas
Zab will be rotated with Richards
Giroud, Bent and J rod are rubbish IMO

I personally feel Nolan will shine as long as Caroll is fit and Snoddy will really benefit from having RVW/Hooper up front in terms of assist capacity.

Zab will be nailed on and only occasionally be benched imo.

You have Kim as your FOURTH mid!? Kim + Thomas is an incredibly bad combination imo.

Terry has same if not more rotation threat that Zab has (age + competition). Negredo also has a rotation threat hanging over him. GW 3 you may end up benching Haz which will leave you playing Walcott, Mirallas, Kim, Thomas vs my Walcott, Mirallas, Nolan, Snoddy.

I will get the man in form out of those 3 strikers and they are by no means rubbish. It's a bit funny you call them rubbish whilst playing Kim as your fourth mid.

Posted this on another page somewhere but it got a bit lost:

    For next 3 fixtures:

A: Coutinho. STO, villa, MAN U
    B: Silva. NEW, car, HULL

Think I may have just wobbled onto Silva.......anyone with me or should I stick with Coutinho?

      A for me.

B is doubling up on Liverpool plus Toure may be rotated with Skrtel where as all 3 in A should start.
