Romelu Lukaku is rested to the bench as Fernando Torres leads the line in the first match of Chelsea’s double. Oscar proves his differential status by grabbing the opener from his role in “the hole”, while Roberto Soldado opens his Tottenham account with a coolly-converted spot-kick at Selhurst Park.

The Game Changer

While Chelsea eased past Hull at the Bridge, Tottenham’s narrow victory came courtesy of their summer signing from Valencia. Andre Villas-Boas’ side rolled up to Palace without last term’s talisman Gareth Bale and with the likes of Robin Van Persie, Christian Benteke, Rickie Lambert and Daniel Sturridge opening their accounts on Saturday, Roberto Soldado’s 15% Fantasy Premier League (FPL) owners were desperate for a response from their 9.5 investment.

The Spaniard may have looked sluggish but eventually delivered thanks to a smartly converted spot-kick. His manager duly admitted post-match that Soldado’s still lacks “sharpness”. Despite this, the numbers suggest good things to come: Soldado had more shots on target and created more goalscoring opportunities than any Spurs player.

A guaranteed starter, whether in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, he now sets his sights on a run of four home fixtures (SWA, NOR, WHM, HUL) and also has trips to Cardiff and Villa in the next eight Gameweeks.

For those eyeing up an exit route for Romelu Lukaku or who simply cannot stomach shelling out 14.0 for Van Persie, Soldado certainly presents an option if he can, as Villas-Boas’ suggests, sharpen up in the weeks to come. Conceivably, he could even become an armband contender over Tottenham’s favourable run.

The Underused

Oscar went into today’s clash firmly in the shadow of Eden Hazard and Juan Mata in terms of FPL ownership. Typically, however, he stepped up to deliver and outscore both. Moved to the role in “the hole” behind Fernando Torres, the Brazilian – with less than 5% ownership – continued the form that saw him score in three of his last five starts in 2012/13 by poking home the opener at the Bridge.

Mourinho has already suggested he is likely to field the playmaking skills of Oscar centrally more often this season but with Mata warming the bench for the entire match, there’s every possibility the Brazilian could be ousted from the XI for Wednesday’s game with Villa, with Jose giving the Spaniard a run-out. Furthermore, the introduction of Marco Van Ginkel and subsequent shift to a 4-3-3 merely compounds the potential headache we could face this season, with Chelsea’s midfield boasting an embarrassment of riches.

The Selection Poser

Jose Mourinho’s first teamsheet of the season has already signposted the Fantasy frustration we can expect up front for Chelsea over the upcoming campaign. Romelu Lukaku was the Blues form player over the summer, racking up five goals and a pair of assist across the pre-season fixtures, and was anticipated by many to get the nod as Mourinho welcomed Hull to the Bridge. Instead, it was Fernando Torres who led the line against the Tigers, earning an assist for Lampard’s stunning dead ball strike after being fouled, before making way for the Belgian on 75 minutes.

Today’s XI will, at least, afford Lukaku’s owners a fair degree of optimism ahead of the midweek visit of Villa. Surely he will now return to the starting line-up on Wednesday against Paul Lambert’s side but with a trip to United and a blank Gameweek 3, it seems the exodus is already underway.

I could be wrong, but it was my understanding that if the target NTI isn't reached by midnight UK time, it resets for the next day. He would rise around 3am UK time if he had reached the target I thought. Anyone confirm this?

People think I should be looking to shift out Ivan or Hazard for blank? See both as long term but would be a really weak team otherwise. Maybe a city or Newcastle player for a few gameweeks?

Despite them all being on target this weekend I'm a bit concerned about the forwards. Spurs didn't seem like they would be scoring a lot and Lambert's now got expensive competition. Was thinking of upgrading Giroud to Negredo but Giroud's looking potentially my best forward atm.

      Mignolet (Davis)

      Toure Ivanovic Coleman (Turner Ward)

      Nolan Hazard Silva Coutinho (Kim)

      Lambert Soldado Giroud

Be real, even if you picked that team from the start, you would have left Whittaker and possibly Barkley on the bench, you'd be stressing about how you spent £19.5m on Coutinho and Walcott to score 5 points, and you might even be asking about whether you should take a hit to pull the ripcord on *that* situation.

Wait and see. But goes to show us that some plans need to be scuppered. I think there's going to be a lot of rotation in MF for Chelsea, based on Mourinho's comments.

Terry (I have Ivan) can stay for a bit. Will be nice to free up those funds.

It's the terry funds I would like to free up. and then upgrade somewhere else. Again not to sure on what I want to do now. Was going to use the terry funds to upgrade Oscar to Wally.

Now I think could do a sideways move with Haz --> walcott, keep Oscar and put the extra cash from terry to upgrade one of my strikers.

Safe to say I have no clue what my next move should/will be.

Terry, club captain, will be the first name on the team sheet all season. This is just my opinion obviously, but I feel very strongly about it. Luiz/Cahill/Ivanovic will be rotated. I'm sure Terry will pick up the odd injury and miss one or two games, but that's about it.

Also, I think Mourinho wants some stability on the pitch to begin the season. Sounds mental...Terry and "stability", haha. But he's the Captain, a veteran and Jose knows him well, he can trust him.

Also might stroke his ego a bit to rehabilitate Terry into a dominant CB in the League.

Yes, exactly. He's aged a bit now, plus the injuries. People were ready to move on past him. Plus with Luiz.

But in reality, he'll be good for Jose and settling the club down a bit on the field. Let Jose play around with the front 7.

It's interesting Q because city appear to have a more attacking approach. Benefits Zab's attacking returns but diminishes consistent clean sheets.

Evra looks in great form but I'd go with Zab over next lot of Gwks.

Wildcarded. rvp in, leaving a space for Bale potentially. I didn't want rvp, but he plays. It looks like Aguero is fit, not confident Dzeko will start, means I've picked two centre forwards who'll play from the bench...annoying. I just want a team I can pick and leave !

Not relying on the Arsenal defence when the squad is that thin, must repeat to self: only pick Walcott from Arsenal, only when fit. Going to go with only Coutinho/Bale/Walcott in midfield this season i think. The Chelsea rotation, whodoIpickoutofOscarHazardLampardBaTorresLukaku is maddening.

Fantasy football just causes unhappiness. My aim isn't even to do well. It's to decrease the unhappiness and irritation. Defenders seem to be the key. I'm almost more happy when a defender gets a clean sheet and I see that 6 by their name, whenever I have a good gw it's because of the defenders, the top players, the top scores of the gw seem to be defined by defenders...i usually go with 3 but I'm thinking 5 this season. Midfielders are disappointing.
