City turn on the style as Manuel Pellegrini gets his Etihad tenure up and running with a devastating display against an out-of-sorts Newcastle. While the hosts dazzled going forward, their injury problems at the back mounted after their skipper was subbed off before the final whistle:

The Game Changer

With four goals over the pre-season fixtures, Edin Dzeko had finished the summer as top scorer for Manuel Pellegrini’s side. The new City boss had responded by suggesting the Bosnian was his main striker – a comment many thought that, somewhere along the line, had been lost in translation.

A brace for Bosnia in last week’s defeat by the USA, however, signalled his form ahead of this evening’s match with Newcastle and Pellegrini backed up his faith by selecting Dzeko over Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic as Sergio Aguero’s partner in a 4-2-2-2 formation.

Fantasy managers have been stung by Dzeko before but tonight’s showing is hugely encouraging for a player that is so favourably priced across the Fantasy games. He may have delivered just one assist from this evening’s encounter but his display deserved so much more – he managed an impressive eight shots; equalling the sum total offered by David Silva, Aguero, Yaya Toure and sub Negredo. With a trip to Cardiff and home clash against Hull, he looks the ideal replacement for those looking for an escape route from Romelu Lukaku.

The Underused

Having failed to play all pre-season, Sergio Aguero was treated with caution by Fantasy managers as the campaign got underway. With summer recruits Negredo and Jovetic added to the mix, it looked more likely than Pellegrini would ease him back into the fold for the first three games, affording Aguero time to return to full fitness over September’s international break.

Instead, the Argentine was installed alongside Dzeko for the demolition of Newcastle, with Jovetic unable to even make the bench. As the hosts swept the sorry Magpies aside, Aguero was quick to open his account for the season – slotting home just after 20 minutes to put his side two ahead.

Subbed off just after the hour mark, it’s apparent Pellegrini will remain careful with his game time but, while Robin Van Persie squares up to Chelsea and Liverpool in consecutive weeks, Aguero’s 7% Fantasy Premier League ownership makes him a deadly differential for back-to-back showdowns against two promoted sides.

The Selection Poser

The sight of Vincent Kompany limping off with what appeared to be a groin problem leaves Pellegrini sweating on his defensive options ahead of the trip to Wales. With City’s other first-choice central defender Matija Nastasic still to return to action after sustaining an ankle injury over the summer, Joleon Lescott’s security of starts now looks a little more secure at the heart of defence.

Micah Richards’ official twitter account has this evening claimed he, too, is sidelined “for a few weeks” with a hamstring injury – potentially, Javi Garcia may have to slot in alongside Lescott if the injuries don’t improve over the weekend. Depending on the Kompany prognosis, Pellegrini may go shopping for cover before the transfer window is closed.

Ok lads, I am trying to find a way to fit Kun into my team. Ideally he will come in for Lukaku leaving me with a front 3 of: Aguero Sturridge Soldado. All on pens and are all main strikers in high scoring teams. However, that would mean that I would have to find 3mil somewhere. So this is my plan:
    Terry to 5.5 defender
    Hazard to Nolan

Of course it won't be all this week, but I reckon I should pull it off until the Chelsea blank.

    What do you think?

I think Gerrard might be upset with the penalty comments 🙂

Also, think Silva is a better way (more nailed way at least) in to City attack and will disrupt your team far less.

i have silva, but i also think aguero will be nailed on. He was great yesterday and wasn't even fully fit, i doubt Pellegrini will bench him, also he is clearly heads and shoulders above any other city striker.

Are the City strikers not all going to be rotated at some point?

Is Aguero better than Dzeko? Dzeko could have scored 2 or 3 on another night.

    So he could.

Is that not the reason Negredo might play in his place next week?

I think people tend to get over excited by the rotation threat. Joetivic was not even on the bench last night which suggests he was eased in. Dzeko impressed the Manager and City won 4 - 0 . Common sense says Dzeko will start next week. The only time rotation might happen semi regularly is during the champions league.

I'm wary of getting either, Dzeko for Lukaku is very tempting primarily due to the lack of options around that price with 0 in the bank, but I would certainly not feel comfortable with the rotation hanging over him.

Would it be a good move to make replying to 2/3 posts compulsory before posting a new comment? Just thinking out loud here, it is quite annoying when the same question about an assist not given gets asked several times on every page.

Similarly the RMT gang who don't appear to be giving a great deal back in return.... I suppose it's hard to do when pages are moving quickly but then again the pages would slow down as a result.

Hazard - Zaha - Snodgrass - Wally (Poz)
    Soldado - RVP - Lambert

        Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut if you have tooooo

Dzeko great short term shout, but the rotation you are complaining effectively about with Lukatu is the same problem you are facing with Dzeko, buuuuuuuuuuuuut he has no blank GW3 and no MU GW2, so would go Dzeko.

If somebody writes a post about how to fit Bale into your team if he stays with Spurs, can it be hulked and titled, "The Balephant in the Room?" I feel like there are lots of plans to get RVP, but nobody's talking about Bale, and Spurs' fixtures are so darn good until about week 12.

    POSITIVE

Although Pellegrini refused to get carried away with the 4-0 win, Edin Dzeko’s man of the match-winning performance was one aspect that did leave him purring.

“I trust Edin Dzeko,” Manuel declared, “it was a pity he didn’t score because he had a lot of chances and he played very well.

“We knew with the ball that he’s a very good player but I think he played very well without the ball tonight. He had some important chances and he deserved to score today.

“I spoke to him when I first arrived and I told him that he will do very well for us.

“I am sure we are now going to see the Edin Dzeko that City bought from Wolfsburg two years ago.”

    NEGATIVE

n the post-match press conference, Pellegrini called on his side to continue this trend at Cardiff City next Sunday.

“The most pleasing aspect was the way the team played for 90 minutes, from the beginning the attitude was aggressive and we continued to play that way for the whole match,” Pellegrini said.

“It’s a very good start but I was very confident that the team would play well, we worked very hard during pre-season, we were trying another style of football and maybe we must continue to improve but for the first match, it was good.

    ...Manuel Pellegrini...

“We are also very happy with both of the new players. Navas and Fernandinho played very well – Navas is always running and trying to make important passes inside the area.

“Fernandinho does a lot of work without the ball and he did well - I’m sure when Jovetic and Negredo come in and play 90 minutes they will do very well too.

“I’m very happy with the squad we have this season; we will need all of them.”

On a day of many positives, there was one troubling moment in the 90 minutes when Vincent Kompany limped out of the game on 70 minutes.

Pellegrini admitted that it was “impossible to say at this point” whether it was a serious injury or whether the captain will be back in action in days rather than weeks.

“We will see what happens with Vincent tomorrow – the doctors will look and then we will find out how many days he may miss,” he stated.

“I can’t tell you exactly what happened. It may be a serious injury, it may be nothing – I don’t know.”
