Liverpool find a familiar cutting edge. Hull’s deadball specialist provides the difference, while an array of doubts come creeping as teamsheets and pose early questions.

The Game Changer

Once again, Daniel Sturridge delivered the winner. Brendan Rodgers’ slick passing outfit failed to produce the volume of chances we saw in the opener against Stoke but it didn’t matter to Sturridge. He took his one major opportunity with typical aplomb and, sharing a pitch with Benteke and his bandwagon, gave us plenty of food for thought.

Two games, two goals and a record that now shows eight strikes in his last seven league outings: with Villa’s strikers starved in the opening period, then denied by Simon Mignolet in the second, Sturridge was left to underline his credentials as a striker option.

Benteke and Tottenham’s Roberto Soldado have tempted big investment, while Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud has emerged as another potential prospect. Sturridge has to be added to that list of those contesting a spot in our forward lines and, with early season fitness doubts seemingly dispersed, he is perhaps presenting the strongest case of all.

The Underused

The search for a budget asset amongst the promoted teams was intense in the pre-season, with Robbie Brady’s name firmly in the mix. Despite the chatter, Brady attracted less than 1% of Fantasy Premier League managers and it was those select few who benefited from his winning spot-kick against Hull today. Brady epitomises a set-piece hogger: central to Hull’s free-kicks and on penalty duty, his delicious left-foot delivery will likely be key to their chances of survival over the season.

Is that enough to tempt investment? Today’s double figure returns should certainly bring him onto the radar for the masses and you have to wonder, while the likes of Ross Barkley and Pajtim Kasami continue to earn suitors in the budget bracket, whether Brady is the most convincing contender for that fifth midfield spot.

The Selection Poser

Uncertainty is building with the teamsheets still providing as many questions as answers.

Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne failed to earn an instant recall at St Mary’s only to emerge from the bench to replace recent bandwagon, Luke Shaw. The left-back was withdrawn having suffered further knee problems in the first half and could yet be an early concern for Gameweek 3.

Another popular budget purchase, the aforementioned Pajtim Kasami, was again deployed up in support of Dimitar Berbatov in today’s early kick-off. The 21-year-old attracted almost 90,000 new owners following his winner at Sunderland – can he really reward that investment? With Darren Bent off the mark from the bench and Bryan Ruiz in reserve, it looks highly unlikely.

Steven Whittaker earned a stay of execution in the Norwich lineup with Seb Bassong still absent, while team-mate Robert Snodgrass disappointed with just a single point return after being left benched by Chris Hughton. It could be very different tale for Snodgrass and Whittaker when the Canaries face Southampton next weekend, however.

Elsewhere, Kevin Mirallas was hauled off for the second match running having squandered further opportunities. It’s too early to get twitchy but the Belgian needs find an end product soon; it may not be long before Roberto Martinez starts to consider Arouna Kone for a role on the right of his three-man attack if chances go on being spurned.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    A huge number of midfielder that're considered big hitters have disappointed this year such as Coutinho,Hazard,Cazorla,Mata & co. Even the mid priced options such as Mirallais, Snodders,& the rest havn't been involved. Is this a panic attack gone bad for all of us, or is it asign telling us that this is the year where we should invest up top and at the back instead ? Share your thoughts and lets hear the discussion about this topic.

    This season seems to favour defenders over midfielders, with much more bps
    So is thinking about a shift to 4/4/2(imo) or 5/2/3 (might be too much) a good option ??
    Getting 2 or 3 cheapies in the mid will easily get u 3 from aguero rvp soldado benteke stu giroud plus decent defensive line with high attacking potential

      I have Ivan and Hazza so it's a direct swap to Zabba and Silva for me. Frees up some cash with good Citeh fixtures.

      There is a line which you should identify between
      -Your team setup is good but you're just having a tough time
      and
      -Your team is in terrible shape and you'll only dig yourself into a greater hole if you sit back and pray.

        Hey, yeah, I stayed away this summer because I was way too into FPL last season and needed to remember what life was about. Now that I remember I'm back with my tail between my legs. 😉

      I think the reality is that everyone (managers, players, etc) is due a few bad weeks. If you have some sort of strategy you'll probably even out somewhere along the way. GW1 isnt a terrible time for a wild card, if you notice your team structure going forward is horribly broken (ie you have 6 players who are not starting or are out injured, ). That being said, theres nothing wrong with a slow start. We already know there are proven talents playing who arent scoring well right now, and we know there are players scoring high (most of the current bandwagon targets?) who will likely, over a long season, even out.

      tldr, I agree with the latter as well

        tl, but did read, and I agree. The tough bit is knowing whether your team is fundamentally flawed or just having a rocky start. In my case I think the latter, but we'll see.

    I see so much hate for Mirallas this week but who would you actually replace him with? Apart from Nolan and Silva, all the other midfielders that were expected to get points have flopped. The ones that have actually gotten points aren't expected to do well throughout the season. I'd wait until at least next gameweek to replace Mirallas, he might just score a couple against Cardiff.

      I'm not Corrigan but Suarez will play behind Sturridge. Sturridge is now the main focus of their goalscoring endeavours. STill, Suarez is likely to be explosive but he's likely to get cars too.

    People saying the mids are not getting bonus points because they not scoring

    However , under the old system Walcott would of picked up a couple of bonus points , for his assist , now he gets nothing , he was Even behind Hughes the fulham defender who conceded three goals

        No your missing the point , the mids will get lesss points this season because they are no longer recieving points for assists , not enough for bonus points , those points are going to forwards and backs

          Most mids will, but goal-scoring mids (if it turns out there are any) will still do fine.

          I'd wager that Michu would have scored far more than 15 bonus points last year if this year's bonus system had been in place.

    Just as a matter of interest, When do most people on here make their transfers ? I usually have my mind made after all the matches but nearly always wait until Thursday or Friday just in case there's news of injuries etc.

      Depends on price rises/falls & games played. If Aguero had played I'd get him in tonight as he'll likely go up. However, holding off will mean I won't likely be able to get him. There are a few factors.

      Early season: tend to make them early on in the gwk for price rises.
      Later season: Leave to as late as possible in case of injuries.

    Not going to play any of Toure, Hazard, Morrison and Chester next week, so what do you think I should do?

    A) Toure -> Zab/Lescott
    B) Hazard -> Michu/Nolan
    C) Morrison -> 5.9 mid
    D) Chester -> Lescott/5.5 def (Hull have some decent fixtures after GW3)

      Why would u get rid of Toure? He has been solid and Liverpool decent at the back.
      Chester is a good cheap option.

        Already have Silva. Also, Liverpool have got United next week and then Swansea in Wales the week after. They've been fortunate to get any clean sheets so far tbh. I'm fairly set on keeping Chester...just thought I'd throw it in there.
