Liverpool find a familiar cutting edge. Hull’s deadball specialist provides the difference, while an array of doubts come creeping as teamsheets and pose early questions.

The Game Changer

Once again, Daniel Sturridge delivered the winner. Brendan Rodgers’ slick passing outfit failed to produce the volume of chances we saw in the opener against Stoke but it didn’t matter to Sturridge. He took his one major opportunity with typical aplomb and, sharing a pitch with Benteke and his bandwagon, gave us plenty of food for thought.

Two games, two goals and a record that now shows eight strikes in his last seven league outings: with Villa’s strikers starved in the opening period, then denied by Simon Mignolet in the second, Sturridge was left to underline his credentials as a striker option.

Benteke and Tottenham’s Roberto Soldado have tempted big investment, while Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud has emerged as another potential prospect. Sturridge has to be added to that list of those contesting a spot in our forward lines and, with early season fitness doubts seemingly dispersed, he is perhaps presenting the strongest case of all.

The Underused

The search for a budget asset amongst the promoted teams was intense in the pre-season, with Robbie Brady’s name firmly in the mix. Despite the chatter, Brady attracted less than 1% of Fantasy Premier League managers and it was those select few who benefited from his winning spot-kick against Hull today. Brady epitomises a set-piece hogger: central to Hull’s free-kicks and on penalty duty, his delicious left-foot delivery will likely be key to their chances of survival over the season.

Is that enough to tempt investment? Today’s double figure returns should certainly bring him onto the radar for the masses and you have to wonder, while the likes of Ross Barkley and Pajtim Kasami continue to earn suitors in the budget bracket, whether Brady is the most convincing contender for that fifth midfield spot.

The Selection Poser

Uncertainty is building with the teamsheets still providing as many questions as answers.

Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne failed to earn an instant recall at St Mary’s only to emerge from the bench to replace recent bandwagon, Luke Shaw. The left-back was withdrawn having suffered further knee problems in the first half and could yet be an early concern for Gameweek 3.

Another popular budget purchase, the aforementioned Pajtim Kasami, was again deployed up in support of Dimitar Berbatov in today’s early kick-off. The 21-year-old attracted almost 90,000 new owners following his winner at Sunderland – can he really reward that investment? With Darren Bent off the mark from the bench and Bryan Ruiz in reserve, it looks highly unlikely.

Steven Whittaker earned a stay of execution in the Norwich lineup with Seb Bassong still absent, while team-mate Robert Snodgrass disappointed with just a single point return after being left benched by Chris Hughton. It could be very different tale for Snodgrass and Whittaker when the Canaries face Southampton next weekend, however.

Elsewhere, Kevin Mirallas was hauled off for the second match running having squandered further opportunities. It’s too early to get twitchy but the Belgian needs find an end product soon; it may not be long before Roberto Martinez starts to consider Arouna Kone for a role on the right of his three-man attack if chances go on being spurned.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

With the Pellegrini factor (Isco), fixtures, Citeh form and lack of alternatives, I think the clamour for Silva is understandable, but I've watched him closely more than any other Prem player in recent years and whilst the descriptions of "Wizard" and "Merlin" are indeed accurate, I am not convinced FPL wise.

If he was Modric's/mid priced then I would seriously consider him.

Whilst I no longer dismiss him due to the factors mentioned, I think you can find better vfm long term.

Interesting stuff. I've been wondering whether to remove Hazard or Coutinho for him. You'd say neither, I take it? I have Aguero right now but when Benteke comes back into the reckoning,I was thinking little David was my path into the City goal carnival. Hmmmmm.

            Pressure's on! 😉

Personally, I would have Michu, Nolan, Mirallas, Coutinho plus the Chelsea and Arsenal options in front of Silva.

Once Walcott, Santi, Hazard, Mata, Oscar and Michu begin to motor, I would have them ahead of him.

            I could be completely wrong.

Not going to disagree, but when you want in on City, there are few safe options. One approach is to just not bother, but I think Silva will gat a goood few hauls. What I mean is, he is not as good an fpl prospect as his ability seems to warrant, but he might still be better than some alternatives.

City look so good going forward to the extent they are going to pulverise some teams and Silva could well accumulate assist hauls with the odd goal thrown in.

It's not cut and dry and I agree with your post.

I'd agree to some extent but think he's valuable in the sense that he's relatively consistent in his returns, which can't be said for a lot of other players. You can leave him in there for most of the season knowing he'll get ~175 and you won't have to waste transfers on him, which can be better used elsewhere.

I'm expecting him to bring in points in excess of his price. Man City are the only club to have more than two top-grade strikers. They should score more goals than anyone else this year. And Silva will play the majority of the games and be feeding a good number of the goals. Pellegrini is a very attacking manager too. And the squad harmony should be much improved now that Tevez and Balotelli are gone. Chelsea will do will too, though their strike force isn't as impressive and Mourinho is a much more conservative, defensive, low-risk manager. My money is on Silva to be the top-scoring midfielder in the game, followed perhaps by Walcott, Coutinho, and Hazard (and perhaps Mata, though dependent on which club he ends up playing for).

Coutinho vs Modric: Great first touch, good dribbling, good passing, affinity for spectacular through balls, not a lot of direct goal threat, can play with both feet.

Obviously I am not saying they are identical players, but there are plenty of similarities. Obviosly, Modric is more deep-lying and Coutinho is more of a CAM-type player.

Not sure why you guys are shocked I see similarities in them.

Not shocked, but you were implying he'd be giving Modric-like FPL returns

I think Coutinho has more goal threat, as he gets in the box more. Through balls are good for assists. Modric is more of an assister of assists than Coutinho.

I am not sure about the goal threat, to be honest Demi. Coutinho is definitely more advanced (he was the most advanced 'Pool player today) and does get in the box more but Modric's shots from outside are an equal if not bigger goal threat. Every time Coutinho shoots it's as if he doesn't have enough power in his shot.

I don't have the luxury of being able to transfer him now but with no set pieces and limited goal threat (vs. someone like Michu) at 9.5 he may be overpriced.

Yes, i agree that his shots alot of the time don't appear threatening. And yeah, he may not live up to his 9m tag but think he's been unlucky not to get atleast an assist over the two games. I would probably sell to Michu too, but not sure i may have other priorities. Atleast he's nailed on.

Don't know how accurate TotalFpl has been, but FISO has been a bit off so far.

Neither are great, both have had problems... Use them as a guide but don't take either as certs.. TFPL seems slightly better so far but they are both finding their way

From the time I have started playing this game in 2011. The advice I got is play 3 at the back. Today Toure Chester W. Reid and Coleman got clean sheets. I sat Reid on the bench while Mirallas and Coutinho run around like chickens. I just got to the believe the both of them have to come. Maybe I have to be more versatile and play formations on the fly rather than stick to this rigid 3-4-3 although I know the game is a forward's sport.

I think it depends what the team transfer needs are. Probably some good one week swaps out there (city attackers, North london derby) that would be better then 9+ on the bench, if you need to fix up elsewhere on the team then a one week bench spot isnt the worst for a potential season keeper

ffs advised me to chose Koren as a piece taker.
therefore he was in my team today, but apparently this other bloke Brady scored 11pts today.

Koren took a pen whilst Brady was on the pitch late last season. That's just about all the info anybody had.

other than Robbie Brady, budget set piece takers (from the not-updated tab above) that have been getting some minutes are:

          Ward-Prowse / southampton
          Redmond / norwich

I think it only looks that way right now because of a very unsustainably high number of cleans sheets. When clean sheet rates return to normal, mids and forwards will be the bap magnets again

Got lost on last page. Not up to speed on how to read FISO. Are any of the following rising/falling tonight?

    1) Snodgrass
    2) Soldado
    3) Collins

      If FISO is accurate then:

      1) Falling
      2) Rising
      3) No

        3) No

Well, so far, I should have played 4-3-3. All the points are coming at the back. This bonus system must now influence people to potentially use their wild card earlier.
I had Foster on the bench this week, but all my defenders got cleanies again.
