Liverpool find a familiar cutting edge. Hull’s deadball specialist provides the difference, while an array of doubts come creeping as teamsheets and pose early questions.

The Game Changer

Once again, Daniel Sturridge delivered the winner. Brendan Rodgers’ slick passing outfit failed to produce the volume of chances we saw in the opener against Stoke but it didn’t matter to Sturridge. He took his one major opportunity with typical aplomb and, sharing a pitch with Benteke and his bandwagon, gave us plenty of food for thought.

Two games, two goals and a record that now shows eight strikes in his last seven league outings: with Villa’s strikers starved in the opening period, then denied by Simon Mignolet in the second, Sturridge was left to underline his credentials as a striker option.

Benteke and Tottenham’s Roberto Soldado have tempted big investment, while Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud has emerged as another potential prospect. Sturridge has to be added to that list of those contesting a spot in our forward lines and, with early season fitness doubts seemingly dispersed, he is perhaps presenting the strongest case of all.

The Underused

The search for a budget asset amongst the promoted teams was intense in the pre-season, with Robbie Brady’s name firmly in the mix. Despite the chatter, Brady attracted less than 1% of Fantasy Premier League managers and it was those select few who benefited from his winning spot-kick against Hull today. Brady epitomises a set-piece hogger: central to Hull’s free-kicks and on penalty duty, his delicious left-foot delivery will likely be key to their chances of survival over the season.

Is that enough to tempt investment? Today’s double figure returns should certainly bring him onto the radar for the masses and you have to wonder, while the likes of Ross Barkley and Pajtim Kasami continue to earn suitors in the budget bracket, whether Brady is the most convincing contender for that fifth midfield spot.

The Selection Poser

Uncertainty is building with the teamsheets still providing as many questions as answers.

Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne failed to earn an instant recall at St Mary’s only to emerge from the bench to replace recent bandwagon, Luke Shaw. The left-back was withdrawn having suffered further knee problems in the first half and could yet be an early concern for Gameweek 3.

Another popular budget purchase, the aforementioned Pajtim Kasami, was again deployed up in support of Dimitar Berbatov in today’s early kick-off. The 21-year-old attracted almost 90,000 new owners following his winner at Sunderland – can he really reward that investment? With Darren Bent off the mark from the bench and Bryan Ruiz in reserve, it looks highly unlikely.

Steven Whittaker earned a stay of execution in the Norwich lineup with Seb Bassong still absent, while team-mate Robert Snodgrass disappointed with just a single point return after being left benched by Chris Hughton. It could be very different tale for Snodgrass and Whittaker when the Canaries face Southampton next weekend, however.

Elsewhere, Kevin Mirallas was hauled off for the second match running having squandered further opportunities. It’s too early to get twitchy but the Belgian needs find an end product soon; it may not be long before Roberto Martinez starts to consider Arouna Kone for a role on the right of his three-man attack if chances go on being spurned.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

no, i think his price is too high, the third striker selection is always a downgrade with him in your lineup unless your shortchange your d or mid-f

I'm utterly tempted, but think I will ultimately resist. The fact I really quite like the 3 of Sturridge, Soldado and Benteke combined with his 14m price tag (and the impacts that has on the rest of my team) means I'm favouring not getting him.

Worked out what my score would have been last week if I'd have had RVP in my team (and the other team changes needed to accomodate him) - it came out lower than my non-RVP team. Whilst that is still the case I'm a happy man.

Knew I should have made the Collins for Shaw transfer. 0-0 so likely for that game. But also thought Sunderland wouldn't score ! I watched the Liverpool game highlights on MOTD thinking that Enrique had been replaced, faith repayed when i saw he was rewarded 12 points.

Bit worried about Coutinho. Either Aston Villa are really difficult to break down this season or Liverpool are flagging a little bit early. Again Mirallas disappoints. Even if Hazard scores i won't regret taking him out. Nolan mostly scores at home.

coutinho i reckon will come good although my concern is his bps scores are low. he plays a lot of throughballs which im thinking is costing him bps. but he looks a top top player.

Coutinho does look like he won't score well in BPS unless he gets on the scoresheet, as he has a lower pass completion % as he try's more speculative through balls than his teammates.
Also doesn't really manage many interceptions or blocks or other defensive actions.

Gets plenty of key passes, but that's not enough to get him a good score unless he manages assists or a goal

It's true of everybody though. All the stars have to align for a non-defender to get baps out of a game without scoring a goal. The way the system works makes it very unlikely.

70 points last season in 923 minutes is still really good. I think he's being relied on more and he doesn't have the physicality to cope with it, but I didn't watch the villa game I don't know how many chances Liverpool made. They made loads against Stoke though, it could have been 5-0. I just think Villa are a more resilient side and refuse to let the other team create chances, Lambert fearful of Villa leaking too many goals. Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool have all struggled to score against them,

Coutinho's through balls might be ambitious but last season it was those same passes that Sturridge could get on the end of, within 10 minutes he can easily slip two passes to Sturridge and get two assists. He's also not being played through the middle yet and that might happen.

liverpool are only scoring 1 goal against stoke and villa, that's more worrying than coutinho's 3 each game, a player at 9 shouldn't be so fixture dependent in my view

So, I have a situation with my bench (none of them playing) and Rat (also not playing).

I have to remove Hazard this week to field at least 10 players for GW3.

    I was going to go:
    Hazard > Nolan/Michu GW2 transfer.
    Dzeko/Aguero > Benteke GW3 transfer.

That would mean keeping the apparently non-playing Rat for another 2 GWs before I could even think about moving him on.

    Alternatively I could do:

    Hazard + Rat > Nolan/Michu + Collins GW2 transfer (-4).
    Dzeko/Aguero > Benteke GW3 transfer.

If I bring in Michu over Nolan I will have to lose Aguero, but I'll be waiting till after tomorrow's game to make the decision so it has at least a little bit more data behind the choice.

So which would you do? Seems obvious to me. I just want some random internet folk to validate my choice.

    A) Mannone
    B) Snodgrass

On FisoCTC, Mannone is -115% and Snodgrass is -140%, which is quite beyond the -100% mark, so I'd say so yes.

British talent should be playing at the biggest british clubs though don't you think? I don't think Wales fans are too happy that he won't be playing in England. Was gutted when Beckham went to Real

Ideally yes but succeeding at a team like Real Madrid shows anyone with doubts your quality. I feel that some of our best talents have always been underrated by football fans outside of England because they sit in their "comfort zone".

    Hi DZ,

I've got 5.9m to spend on an Anelka replacement.

    Who do I get?

    A) Chamakh (scored last night)
    B) F Campbell (Reasonable pre-season)
    C) Graham (Good fixtures, but I may get Brady instead)
    D) Maiga (Fixtures seem ok)
    E) Rosenborg (Straight replacement and found the net in Preseason)

Is Cabral a rotation threat or was he injured?

GW3 not looking good as stuck with - Lukaku, Hazard, R. Morrison and Cabral.

Obv transfer would be Lukaku for another striker depending what happens tomorrow. May go for Bony.

As no Hazard, Cabral may not play and morrisson a bench warmer. Seem like -4 is on the cards

    Any ideas? Team Linked

i think yes if you've got your eye on someone who is going to rise in price, but lots holding on to him. I haven't seen enough to justify the price tag, looked good for the first 10mins Vs Hull, but seems to drift out onto the left wing a lot. I'd rather take my chances on Lamps and use the 1.5 elsewhere

Hernandez is a proven goal-scorer. With Welbeck, Mata, Kagawa behind him we would still score goals. And we get rid of a player who is unhappy and causing problems
