Liverpool find a familiar cutting edge. Hull’s deadball specialist provides the difference, while an array of doubts come creeping as teamsheets and pose early questions.

The Game Changer

Once again, Daniel Sturridge delivered the winner. Brendan Rodgers’ slick passing outfit failed to produce the volume of chances we saw in the opener against Stoke but it didn’t matter to Sturridge. He took his one major opportunity with typical aplomb and, sharing a pitch with Benteke and his bandwagon, gave us plenty of food for thought.

Two games, two goals and a record that now shows eight strikes in his last seven league outings: with Villa’s strikers starved in the opening period, then denied by Simon Mignolet in the second, Sturridge was left to underline his credentials as a striker option.

Benteke and Tottenham’s Roberto Soldado have tempted big investment, while Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud has emerged as another potential prospect. Sturridge has to be added to that list of those contesting a spot in our forward lines and, with early season fitness doubts seemingly dispersed, he is perhaps presenting the strongest case of all.

The Underused

The search for a budget asset amongst the promoted teams was intense in the pre-season, with Robbie Brady’s name firmly in the mix. Despite the chatter, Brady attracted less than 1% of Fantasy Premier League managers and it was those select few who benefited from his winning spot-kick against Hull today. Brady epitomises a set-piece hogger: central to Hull’s free-kicks and on penalty duty, his delicious left-foot delivery will likely be key to their chances of survival over the season.

Is that enough to tempt investment? Today’s double figure returns should certainly bring him onto the radar for the masses and you have to wonder, while the likes of Ross Barkley and Pajtim Kasami continue to earn suitors in the budget bracket, whether Brady is the most convincing contender for that fifth midfield spot.

The Selection Poser

Uncertainty is building with the teamsheets still providing as many questions as answers.

Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne failed to earn an instant recall at St Mary’s only to emerge from the bench to replace recent bandwagon, Luke Shaw. The left-back was withdrawn having suffered further knee problems in the first half and could yet be an early concern for Gameweek 3.

Another popular budget purchase, the aforementioned Pajtim Kasami, was again deployed up in support of Dimitar Berbatov in today’s early kick-off. The 21-year-old attracted almost 90,000 new owners following his winner at Sunderland – can he really reward that investment? With Darren Bent off the mark from the bench and Bryan Ruiz in reserve, it looks highly unlikely.

Steven Whittaker earned a stay of execution in the Norwich lineup with Seb Bassong still absent, while team-mate Robert Snodgrass disappointed with just a single point return after being left benched by Chris Hughton. It could be very different tale for Snodgrass and Whittaker when the Canaries face Southampton next weekend, however.

Elsewhere, Kevin Mirallas was hauled off for the second match running having squandered further opportunities. It’s too early to get twitchy but the Belgian needs find an end product soon; it may not be long before Roberto Martinez starts to consider Arouna Kone for a role on the right of his three-man attack if chances go on being spurned.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Proposed swaps

Hazard + Benteke + anelka - all out for

    1. Silva + Giroud + Bent

    2. Ya Ya + Soldado + Bent

Which one please? Want to beat the possible price rise in Soldado and drop in Anelka before 2.30am

He has been in the past. Needs the game-time though (which I can't see him not getting, just a question of how soon), and I've never liked Fulham for goal-scoring, but then hey, that's why they've signed a striker in Bent!

I'm tossing the idea around of a stronger back line this season. Noticed that the scouts also picked Huth. Had a decent point haul (7, got 2 bonus as well) but at 5.5 I wonder if he'll be more consistent than the 4.5 bracket (perfect example: Shaw last week, Fonte this week).

Zabaleta - Huth - Coleman (Whittaker, Chester) at the moment.

Monitoring Spurs... Was going for Kaboul over Huth but the selection between him and Dawson stopped me. Surely he'll be the first name on the team sheet when he regains fitness, right?

For people with Benteke, Soldado and Giroud or other in-form forwards that isn't RVP, how, if at all, are you going to get the 14.0m striker into your team?

My initial plan was to shift Benteke on for the blank but Villa look decent and Benteke seems right in amongst it. Then I thought I'll get rid of Giroud to get in RVP before CPL but he also looks very important for Arsenal as the transfer window draws to a close. So that leaves Soldado..but I'll be very reluctant to get rid of him before a very favourable run of fixtures especially if he scores tomorrow.

So what are people planning to do? Get rid of one of their in form attackers or risk going without RVP ahead of some tasty fixturers?

At this stage I think I might hold firm but if RVP scores a hat trick at Old Trafford v Palace, that'll be 30+ points as captain and lights out on my 13/14 season...

Very tempted to. If RVP only scores a goal here or there then I think my other players should out score easily. However, he goes on a run of CPL, mci, WBA, sun, SOT, STO. There's bound to be a few braces or even hat tricks in there and with most captaining him, you can easily fall behind.

        Risk v Reward, I guess

He rarely scored more than 1 a game last season (consistency rather than explosiveness usually being his weapon of choice), even in the easy runs. I'll happily admit that run terrifies me, but I reckon with luck and cunning in the right degrees I can negotiate it.

Total transfers does not reset, rather the target number of transfers increases when a player rises in price. Eg. 35k might be a 0.1m, for another 0.1m that player may need another 35k on top of that, so 70k in total. The % shown is the % of this newly revised total.

Is Gibson really an AM though? Surely Barkley is the more attacking player that will play behind the striker. Fellaini seems to be playing deep and may yet be sold.

Many have Coleman for starters. Some have Mirallas as well. Tripling up is not great. Everton blanked at home although Foster had a blinder.

If Barkley becomes a regular starter then a Miralles -> Barkley swap is an option. Much better value at least and there are few good options in that budget range.

The transfer window could throw in a curve ball or two. New signings and/or the departure of Fellaini will determine whether Barkley is worth it.

It's more than a tad premature, but if Foster's injury is serious, who steps in? I thought that Myhill was Foster's understudy, not Daniels. But it was Daniels that took Foster's place after the injury.

Delighted with the Studge decision! The lad is so consistent.

You had a great GW Newman, delighted for ya. I fear Zaba may indeed get 2 CS in the next 2, but again wasn't going to take a hit.

Reg Lamps, think so......unless bale stays.

            Any early thoughts reg Bale?

Rooting for Zabs tomorrow., and Dzeko of course. They and Soldado will determine what kind of GW this will be for me.

So far so good, thanks for the kind words. Definitely had some great performances from defense. Studge may be as close to a season keeper as I have, if healthy. Him and Mignolet, of course.

Why would Bale staying make you sell Lamps? just for the spot?

In my opinion, there is 0% chance Bale will play for us again. what makes you think otherwise?

If we had talked last night, would you have recommended Haz>Silva for a hit?

Only have 2 of these in Coutinho and Hazard.

From what I've seen, Walcott is ready to explode but I'm happy with Giroud over him right now. Mirallas has also shown a lot.

Hazard will definitely come good. Has to find his place in a new system.

Walcott looked lost at times today. Threatening, but lost his finishing edge. On corners and free kicks though, which makes me hopeful.

Mirallas....blah, looked awful today. Really want rid of him. Pre-season fools gold, it appears.

Coutinho is cack, fantasy wise. Was never gonna be worth 9 million, and I don't at all understand why people picked him. All offense goes through Sturridge right now.

        Exactly what you said.

I haven't got him but Barkley looked a lot more threatening. The guy will be legit once he gets a bit more confidence.

      Certainly is.

That's why Silva's in my team just in time to see the template ripped up...
