Chelsea draw up to Old Trafford without a centre-forward but with a gameplan; they execute it perfectly. Jose Mourinho’s side defend stoutly to restrict United to scraps as Gameweek 2’s headline fixture falls flat.

The Game Changer

We were screaming out for a match winner to emerge, only to be left disappointed. Chelsea set out to stifle and frustrate United and succeeded in keeping them at arms length. Robin van Persie was starved of opportunities, Wayne Rooney, back in the United lineup, was restricted to long-range efforts. In an encounter billed as the first true heavyweight clash of the season, we were treated to a disjointed match, littered with misplaced passes and bereft of goalscoring opportunities. That won’t trouble Jose Mourinho and his determined defence.

The Underused

Rooney’s performance underlined what he brings to United. Strength, energy, craft and a goal threat – he will surely be a major player for Moyes, if, as expected he now remains at the club. Owned by under 2% of Fantasy Premier League managers, there’s no doubt that he has the potential to be a huge differential should he cement his start under Moyes and begin to show the form he demonstrated for periods of last season.

The Selection Poser

Rooney’s return to the fray will immediately pose questions over Danny Welbeck’s appeal. Having notched a brace at the Liberty Stadium, Welbeck has attracted big investment with over 90,000 having their head turned by the potential of United attacking player for 7.5. While Welbeck partnered Van Persie in a central role for much of tonight’s game, with so many options on the flanks and Shinji Kagawa to introduce, should he stay, Rooney would seem destined to tuck back inside on a permanent basis to renew his partnership with Van Persie.

The Dutchman’s owners will also be fidgeting at the prospect of Rooney’s return. Tonight’s blank would have come as a major frustration for those who handed Van Persie the armband and now, the prospect of Rooney emerging as a clear alternative in United’s attack will pose familiar questions.

A player of Rooney’s talent, offering coverage of United’s potential for goals, for 3.5 less – it’s a scenario that has to be considered by those with and without Van Persie. However, with so much to be decided in the transfer market in the next week and potential movement in and out of Old Trafford, the landscape could yet change once again.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Lukaku must go NOW! How many transfers you have? Only one? For now I'd do Lukaku to Dzeko if you only have one - but I think that's a temporary fix, after next GW rotation will probably kick in.

I feel so much better knowing that someone who puts Adebayor down as a starter, and owns both Mignolet and De Gea is ranked 1,238th in the world.

36 more games for me to dig out of my pit a couple million places behind... how the heck did I get outsmarted by someone so stupid? ah yes, I must be... really stupid.

I've been thinking about the early wildcard in order to build team value. During the international break aftet gw3 seems to be a popular choice.
The problem is, that unless there are a bunch of huge scores next week, there won't be enough bandwagons to jump on to in order to make the value building strategy work. Looks like I will hold on to it as long as possible.

Right so I have 2FTs. I want to kick Hazard and Lukaku out and I'll buy Aguero for Lukaku. I'm left with 6.1M. Who should I get? Joe Cole at 5.6M is tempting me. West Ham fixtures are not so bad and he seems like he's had a good beginning of a season. Also have Kim Michu Walcott and Coutinho in midfield. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You want a player who is in line to get 90 mins so you could look at any of Noble, Jarvis, Morrison (WBA), Taabart, Larson, Ramsey

Personally I like the 5 mil bracket from the promoted clubs but you already have Kim so maybe thats not your fancy to double up?

6.0 midfielder is a tough price bracket. Everything will be at least a bit punty. Joe Cole is not a bad idea. Ward-Prowse might be a short term option. Sissoko at Newcastle may be playing in the hole, if you want to wager that Newcastle will actually score some goals...

Utd-City match, "the game broke apart", which means both midfields lost control of the ball, originating constant counter-attacks and recurring goal-opportunities due to poor defending positioning. Each match has it's own story.

Mourinho likes to have the control of the match or at least the perceived control of the match.
He comes from 2 home wins and an away draw at the defending champion's home and direct rivals. 0-0 is a better result for CHE than ManU, hence the strategy.

Okay, because this is what i was thinking...

i am thinking the manager of chelsea is a pompous A-hole who thinks he's too cool for school and tried to look like the genius he thinks he is with a risky decision. Kind of like the idiot in a fantasy draft who takes his sleeper way to early just for the glory of saying he knew before anyone else. It's a common mistake among fantasy players who also happen to be egomaniacs. This guy is an egomaniac A-hole to the max I tell you!

But you guys are telling me its strategy. I think it might be good 'strategy' to play Lukaku. Coulb be wrong on that but something tells me he will prove me right when he finally gets his chance.

BTW- is Lukaku bad on defense or something? Seems pretty powerful and intimidating which is a nice start.

Looks pretty good although considering the latest developments you're a little too light on the forwards. You need a Sturridge or a Giroud or something up front.

West Ham (home to Stoke) is a good bet for a clean sheet.
Swansea (away to WBrom) looks interesting. West Brom is terrible, and are missing their first choice keeper.

anyone going to captain walcott over silva this gw?in the past, the london derby always end up with a high scoring game, with the latest fulham 1-3 ars last gw..with another derby (ars v spurs) this weekend, i'm a bit concerned whether walcott, santi, giroud and co. can breach the spurs defense..they not conceding any goal the last 3 games..definitely the addition of paulinho n capoue to the spurs midfield have improved their defense..so how confident we are to captain arsenal player?

you just can't put dinamo tbilisi in the same bracket with all other EPL clubs. they're just shite. on another note, agreed Spurs wouldn't concede so many, Capoue is too a beast of a player to let that happen to his backline.

i'm just saying that the spurs defense have improved, and we can see that from the clean sheet in the last 3 games..which is the reason why i'm not sure if captaining walcott is a good move..who will be your captain kerrazy?

One of the reasons Josie sat Torres and Lukaku is to tell Roo he doesn't rate any of his strikers.
Telling Roo he can be second chair at MU or come to CHE and be #1.

I don't feel like thinking anymore.
Just did Hazard ➡ Silva, and Lukaku ➡ Dzeko for a hit.

    Gives me a XI of:

    Mignolet,
    Reid, Turner, Coleman,
    Silva, Walcott, Coutinho, Mirallas,
    Soldado, Dzeko, van Wolfswinkel,

    Good enough?

What kind of game did Chelsea play today? Were they in defensive mode from the start? I thought they would really try to run at the Utd defense today. Was surprised when I came home to find the opposite seemed to be true.

I have a 25 pt lead in my league if that matters.

How do they rotate with your other players may be the question.
