Chelsea draw up to Old Trafford without a centre-forward but with a gameplan; they execute it perfectly. Jose Mourinho’s side defend stoutly to restrict United to scraps as Gameweek 2’s headline fixture falls flat.

The Game Changer

We were screaming out for a match winner to emerge, only to be left disappointed. Chelsea set out to stifle and frustrate United and succeeded in keeping them at arms length. Robin van Persie was starved of opportunities, Wayne Rooney, back in the United lineup, was restricted to long-range efforts. In an encounter billed as the first true heavyweight clash of the season, we were treated to a disjointed match, littered with misplaced passes and bereft of goalscoring opportunities. That won’t trouble Jose Mourinho and his determined defence.

The Underused

Rooney’s performance underlined what he brings to United. Strength, energy, craft and a goal threat – he will surely be a major player for Moyes, if, as expected he now remains at the club. Owned by under 2% of Fantasy Premier League managers, there’s no doubt that he has the potential to be a huge differential should he cement his start under Moyes and begin to show the form he demonstrated for periods of last season.

The Selection Poser

Rooney’s return to the fray will immediately pose questions over Danny Welbeck’s appeal. Having notched a brace at the Liberty Stadium, Welbeck has attracted big investment with over 90,000 having their head turned by the potential of United attacking player for 7.5. While Welbeck partnered Van Persie in a central role for much of tonight’s game, with so many options on the flanks and Shinji Kagawa to introduce, should he stay, Rooney would seem destined to tuck back inside on a permanent basis to renew his partnership with Van Persie.

The Dutchman’s owners will also be fidgeting at the prospect of Rooney’s return. Tonight’s blank would have come as a major frustration for those who handed Van Persie the armband and now, the prospect of Rooney emerging as a clear alternative in United’s attack will pose familiar questions.

A player of Rooney’s talent, offering coverage of United’s potential for goals, for 3.5 less – it’s a scenario that has to be considered by those with and without Van Persie. However, with so much to be decided in the transfer market in the next week and potential movement in and out of Old Trafford, the landscape could yet change once again.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Morning. I waited last night to do any transfers because I wasn't 100% sure on what to do. Hope you guys can offer some thought.

    Marshall
    Turner Collins Mertesacker* Brayford*
    Mirallas Walcott Nolan Kim
    Giroud Soldado

Bench: Mignolet Benteke Hazard Terry. 1FT 0.0M in bank.

Defense is looking... not good. I got a couple of options; either keep Haz and hope he comes good or go with the resolute Chelsea def and keep Terry, jumping on another premium midfielder.

    A) Terry -> Coleman/Clyne
    B) Hazard -> Silva/Michu/Paulinho/Coutinho

          I believe they do.
A midfield of Pozuelo, Britton, Canas, Dyer, Routledge, de Guzman and Michu speaks volumes about their depth. Oh, I missed Shelvey and Hernandez.

That said, don't expect Michu to be rotated in any PL game.

    Future wildcard team

    Boruc Marshall

    Evra Dawson Coleman Toure Terry

    Paulino Mirralas Adam Snodgrass Brady

    RVP Giroud Sturridge

Cheap midfield strategy shows what can be achieved , can put out a strong side every week due to having good solid subs rather than the ones that are left to rot. Will be plenty of points out of defence and attack and three or four of the mids will play each week defending on fixtures.

Dont concentrate on the selections , its the concept im interested in , what do people think?

I thought about Kompany but i feel they will win most games by too many goals , so the defenders less likely to get bonus points.

I looking for teams like tottenham who will concede very few but not score too many themselves.
If i ignore RVP then would upgrade Dawson to Vert

Trigger it's a concept based on Clean sheets.. I'd say wait n See.. This GW was special.. No goals... So the baps went to defenders.. But the Premier League is Prolific in goals.. And when the attacking midz like Wally mirallas Michu n co will start Scoring they'll get their share of baps...

Personally i would want another 9m+ mid in there and just have 3 big hitting defenders.

For the sake of team balance across all price ranges and positions its important to have at least one big hitting mid so you can make transfers in that price range.

Like the concept, but too much spent in defence at expense of midfield. All the alarmist talk about midfielders not performing and defenders bringing in the points and baps is exaggerated. We have a sample of 2 weeks to draw on, and we know the midfielders will step up soon.

Your team would benefit from a 4.0 defender and spend the difference on midfield. With the current team it will be difficult to know who to bench and there will be plenty of times over the season when the you'll have the performers on the bench,

Everyone is getting excited by the thought if loading up on expensive defenders.

I'm not saying I haven't been tinkering and finding great options, however I think given last nights 0-0, its gone a bit too far.

If you take the average score 2-1 and look at the 2 games this year and the bod they come out as this:-

Ivanovic 2, Lampard 2, benteke 3 (forward or goal biased)
Shawcross 2, huth 2, Chamakh 3 ( defenders yes, but assisting/scoring ones, and interestingly Chamakh got the 3 even on the losing side)

In conclusion I still think its worth getting goal/assist getting big hitting defenders OR defenders from tight teams that might win 1-0, but the flit of low scoring games so far has led us into a slight false sense of security

Agreed. Toure, Coleman and Koscielny is a great budget back 3. Koscielny will be closer to 5.0M soon. Soldado,Benteke,Sturridge is the best front 3,but others are decent options. Glad this template is basically my team.

    Forca!

Why all the Michu love? Do you think he'll be as good as last year?

I know their opening fixtures aren't great but it's hard to see him banging in goals as muh as last year with all the new guys in the team, such as Bony.

    Thoughts?

I think the theory is that he seemed to perform better in the hole last year than when playing lone striker. Having Bony around to create space for him and link-up will help Michu, not hurt him.

I'm thinking a 5-3-2 might be too extreme. 4-3-3 might be a more balanced way of looking at things.

Either ways, the mids hopefully start ripping it up soon so that we know how it affects the BAPS.

Yeah, a 4-3-3 is better IMO because you're usually going to have at least one defender whose fixture you don't like.

4-3-3 I plan with the WC.

      De Gea - X
      Vertonghen - Toure - Mertesacker - Hangeland - Chester
      Michu - Walcott - X - X - X
      Rooney - Soldado - Sturridge

3 cheapies in the middle to rotate for one spot. Could do Benteke/Giroud instead of Rooney and upgrade 1 or 2 mids slightly.

5 defenders with a decent clean sheet chance each week is asking a bit much!

it's a good start I think you could really improve this. here are my suggestions

        vert to dawson
        mert to coleman
        hangeland to terry
3rd mid to silva, lamps, or oscar
4th mid to paulinho or nolan if you can afford. if not then maybe someone like snodgrass

this gives you the flexibility to play 433 or 343 or even 442 and a better team too imo

    Stat off FPL

Twenty five goals scored by forwards, eight players have more than one and five of those scored a brace in a game

Thirteen goals scored by midfielders, none have more than one goal overall and none have more than one assist this season. Of those receiving bonus pts all but two players (Ward-Prowse & Hernandez) scored in the game they received them for. The other tow got assists.

Sixteen clean sheets recorded so far. Of the 6 defenders to score so far five received bonus pts. Of the seven to have assisted goals five received bonus pts.

Is it really any wonder the BAP's have gone to the players getting goals and cleanies?

This isn't some strange change in bonus pts going to defenders its the fact the midfielders have yet to perform to expectations.

It still is a little different. Under PPI, defenders didn't dominate if they kept a clean sheet. For example, Sturridge would have beat both Mignolet and Enrique in the last two weeks. Just going from that, it appears that defenders are more apt to get bonus with a clean sheet than an attacker with attacking returns. Obviously, small sample size, but there was that stat that said Vertonghen had more Bonus Point System points than Bale last year. The clean sheets will dry up and the midfielders will start firing but defenders are more likely to get boners than they used to.

Need to start 2 of Mert, Toure and Collins...

Leaning towards Mert and Collins myself given how poor Spurs have looked in their build up play but not confident.

Or start all 3 and bench coutinho.

    Morning gents.
Currently top of my paid mini league that has manager of the month prizes. Trying to plan for next week. Can anyone tell me if the Liverpool/United, WBA/Swans and Arsenal/Spurs games will contribute towards my overall points for August or September? These games are on September 1st but the game week starts August 31st so just looking for clarification?
