City’s title credentials are already in question as defensive failings are laid bare, whilst up top, a wealth of riches piles pressure on a reborn striker. A Brazilian shows intent as Spurs tweak their tactics and a host of promoted assets stake a claim to solve our search for budget options.

City are fragile without Kompany…
We were well aware that the City skipper was a key player but, in his absence, did not expect the frailties to be exposed so quickly. Particularly at Cardiff. The defending for Frazier Campbell’s two goals was nothing short of woeful and it’s perhaps significant that Pablo Zabaleta should be the player at fault. The dogged Argentine looked to be an obvious replacement for Kompany’s Fantasy owners and was a major consideration for those without existing City coverage, given the fixtures in front of them. Sunday’s events have given us cause for an immediate rethink, though; even with Hull at the Etihad next, Zabaleta’s stock and City’s resilience is now under question. City need to get Kompany in an oxygen chamber and back on the pitch.

Dzeko will have to go on scoring…
Up front, the situation is very different for Manuel Pellegrini. He has more than enough resources to juggle and undoubted quality at his disposal. Dzeko justified the faith we showed in risking him over Christian Benteke in the Scout Picks by firing a fine opener for City but then gave way to Alvaro Negredo in the second period and watched on while the £16 million striker staked his claim with a first Premier League strike. It seems that Sergio Aguero is a favourite – Pellegrini started him without a pre-season against Newcastle and gave him 90 minutes on Sunday. That leaves Dzeko seemingly competing for starts with Negredo and perhaps even Stevan Jovetic once he’s fully fit. The Bosnian needs to keep finding the net but, even then, the risk of rotation may be too much for Fantasy managers, despite his modest price tag.

When fit, Sturridge continues to be prolific…
In the absence of a certain Uruguayan, Sturridge once again proved the difference as Liverpool edged past Villa on Saturday evening. While Philipp Coutinho’s owners await their first Fantasy returns, the former Chelsea man has already delivered in each of the opening couple of Gameweeks and has now notched eight goals in his last seven league appearances for Brendan Rodgers’ side. Sturridge’s prolific form is becoming more difficult to ignore by the Gameweek, though his propensity for picking up injuries is always a concern; groin and hamstring strains curtailed his game time last term, while an ankle injury kept him sidelined for almost all of the pre-season programme. Providing he keeps clear of the treatment room, though, the upcoming schedule – particularly from Gameweek 5 onwards – may see many prefer Sturridge to the likes of Roberto Soldado, Christian Benteke and Olivier Giroud in the upper mid-price bracket, while his exploits so far may persuade many to overlook Luis Suarez when his suspension finally ends.

Fulham need Darren Bent…
Climbing off the bench to mark his Cottagers debut, Darren Bent needed just 18 minutes to open his account in the weekend home defeat by Arsenal. Ostracised by Paul Lambert at Villa, Bent is clearly a favourite of Martin Jol’s – the Fulham boss was quick to praise his instant impact post-match and looks set to restructure his frontline in order to accommodate the loan signing. Last season, only Dimitar Berbatov scored more than five league goals for Fulham – Bent’s arrival will surely address and lend the Cottagers an injection of energy that the Bulgarian – for all his considerable talents – simply fails to provide. Bent’s installation to the Fulham first XI doesn’t come without consequence, though; Berbatov’s owners will be more than a little concerned with a likely shift into a more withdrawn role, while Bryan Ruiz already looks far from a certain starter as Jol looks to strike a better balance.

The Hammers defence looks a tough nut once again…
Sam Allardyce loves a clean sheet and, when your one major goal threat is out injured, what better to tide you over than some steely resistance at the back. Winston Reid and James Collins won the plaudits at St James’ Park and look settled in the centre of a Hammers defence that, once again, looks set to deliver strong value for Fantasy managers. Two consecutive clean sheets with Stoke at home to come: Big Sam could be beaming and looking back on another shut-out come Saturday and, while the fixture list stiffens in the weeks to come, for now, the Hammers look robust.

Paulinho could thrive if Spurs shift systems…
Life without Gareth Bale looks likely to see a change at the Lane. Andre Villas-Boas opted for a 4-3-3 against Swansea, flanking Roberto Soldado with Nacer Chadli and Andros Townsend and, more significantly, giving Paulinho more freedom to bomb on from midfield. Protected by Mouse Dembele and a solid display from new signing Étienne Capoue in front of the back four, Paulinho registered more efforts on goal than any other midfielder in the Gameweek. He could and should have scored his first Premier League goal and, if the Spurs boss installs the system full-time, suddenly the Brazilian’s game will have an added dimension that could fully justify the mid-price outlay.

There’s some potential amongst the new boys…
A week ago I was berating the lack of a cutting edge on show from the promoted sides. Seven days later, I have to acknowledge the efforts of Palace, Hull and particularly Cardiff, at both ends of the pitch. Marouane Chamakh’s goal at the Britannia showed some promise – enough to provide the catalyst for a somewhat premature bandwagon, no doubt fueled by the absence of Nicolas Anelka in the same price bracket.

While Chamakh’s fitness is still a concern, Cardiff’s Frazier Campbell is another who will earn investment this week; boosted by two goals and an assist, his stock will surely soar. Long-term, the threat of rotation – should Malky MacKay keep a 4-5-1 and eventually hand a debut to new £8 million signing Andreas Cornelius – is a concern but, for now, Campbell deserves some attention. Behind Campbell, the promptings of Kim Bo-Kyung and Peter Whittingham caught the eye, while it was Aron Gunnarsson who grabbed the goal from midfield.

That trio are worth monitoring further but perhaps play second fiddle to Hull’s match winner when it comes to budget options in the engine room. Robbie Brady’s ability from set-plays looks likely to keep him in the Hull starting XI and Saturday’s points could be the first of regular returns that could see him offer a decent option as a fifth midfielder. With Allan McGregor outstanding in goal and James Chester earning a first clean sheet as a return on his meager 4.0 FPL valuation, Steve Bruce’s side are showing promise ahead of a decent run of fixtures to follow the weekend trip to City.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

He scored points at pretty much exactly the same rate as Suarez last season, so he wouldn't exactly be a bad option if he were nailed on just behind RVP. And if he stops sulking.

I need to pick a defender & midfielder for max upto 10m . Its spread over this week & next to be able to afford RVP for a hit gw4.

My main issue is who to get out of Brady & Whittingham?

Brady has 4 amazing fixtures after the city game, while Whits also has decent fixtures and is also playable this week.
I need to play my mid this week

Alternatively I can get the best sub 5m defender and play him & get Brady next week.
    Thoughts please

Whittingham for me. Cardiff look much better (I mean, they just beat City 3-2; should be quite formidable at home), Whittingham is nailed on for set pieces and is ridiculously good at them (put in some crazy good dead balls and found amazing space against City).

I have a question to put out there if anyone's willing to engage.

There seems to be a big debate about when is the best time to use your wildcard. I've been thinking about it. If you were to wildcard early, catch price rises, get rid of the dead wood that don't look like coming through (Brayford, Kim et al), and perhaps improve your points over the next few gameweeks by 20-30 points, is this not better than keeping it until later in the season for "the big dgw"?

You might get one monster score but you're still suffering from the constraints of having dgw players you wouldn't normally have.

I have always wildcarded early so I'd love to hear some opinions from the patient guys who keep it for later.

I've always wildcarded early but I'm trying to be patient this year. I reckon it's best to do in the second half of the season. I was thinking of making a spreadsheet of how much money you could make on a weekly basis, and work out when was best to play a wildcard on historical data. Seems like a lot of effort or something I could only use next season though.

I used mine after Xmas last year, and it got me out of a real hole with a last minute Chelsea dgw.

With all the dgws due to fa cup, weather postponement after Xmas you can't have all the players you want for the double without multiple hits.

Like is said, it was the best thing I did to hold so unless my team is in right mess I'll be holding mine to play tactically in the new year.

      Others disagree with this...

i'm interested in the answer. i wildcarded early last year in my first year of playing it seriously and devoting hours to this thing, including being in here on days like this.

not at any stage did I late in the season think "i really wish I didn't wildcard"... in fact it was more of a case of... i'm glad I wildcarded, because no idea how my minileague opponents are going to catch up the difference AND fit all of these price risen guns in (notably RVP).

RVP going to 14.1 after Palace is enough of a reason for me to pull the trigger in advance, as that is essentially the same as 14.5 at this time of the year, and i just can't fit him in while achieving any sort of balance at that price

I used to think saving it for the big end-of-season double gameweek - but some wise old poster (think it was Granville - he has at least one of those qualities) said that with careful planning leading up to the BEOSDGW you could get the same team as the wildcarders with no more than an 8-or-12 point hit. If this is the case (and I believe it is) then you only have to make use an early wildcard to the extent of 20 (ish) points to be in better shape than those who save it.

      Theoretically...

Cheers all, it seems there's no "correct" time to use your wildcard, just depends on your team and style of play. I've had a good start but I still feel like using mine to clean my team up for next week, get RvP in and get rid of players that will be falling in price soon. Realistically when would you get a week where you have the freedom to get rid of the likes of Brayford.

        Stumped.

I suppose the answer is... Play it when you think you need it the most, not because you feel there is appropriate or correct period during the year.

When you have a wildcard in your pocket it's always a week when you have the freedom to get rid of the Brayfords. I think the bottom line is the quality of the Wildcard is more important than the timing.

Wildcard activated. Thoughts on this team?

    Mignolet, Davis
    Whittaker, Toure, Chester, Coleman, Clyne
    Barkley, Silva, Nolan, Ward-Prowse, Walcott
    RVP, Giroud, Dzeko
    2.8m in the bank.

Players like Whittaker and Ward-Prowse are mostly there to see if I can get a price raise out of them. If not, no harm done if I put in the player I want before the deadline.

Maybe Dzeko out because it's uncertain if he plays? Nolan -> Yaya Toure for the extra City coverage?

Bored with the Bale saga now.

It's like a TV show that goes on for two seasons too long.

If Levy doesn't stop fart arseing about he just might find himself left with a very unhappy player on his books as his price plummets.

Looking at midfield options around the 6m mark:

Sissoko: newcastle have decent fixtures but are abs dire in form and some gametime risk

lallana: already have lambert so not an option but a very decent option for those who dont have lamb

tarabt: really liking this as fulham have great fix but got burnt with tarabt last year

pablo: think the best and safe option..minimal gametime risk, good team, fixtures improving

Jarvis/Downing: too assist based and not goal based (in my opinion atleast)

    Anyone i might have missed?

I'm thinking of taking a hit to bring in Aguero for Dzeko this week as a one-week captaincy plan.

Not especially keen on any of my other options.

Although Dzeko might start, Aguero is the safer option and it would remove any doubts over my (c) selection this week.

Will do Aguero > RVP the following week.

    Madness?

      Yes, madness.

Aguero for one week? Not sure if serious... There's no reason for Dzeko not to start after his performance last week. Wasn't being fed anything from the midfield yet managed to score.

Pelle might want to start Negredo at home in front of Hull but surely Dzek will continue to start while he's scoring.

I can actually see this logic. I am one of those who believe Dzeko isn't meant to nail down a spot at all with Negredo being bought. I think Aguero will do very well versus Hull and I'm slightly scared of not owning him. I like the punt and Aguero is one of the standout options for captaincy this GW.

I'm very happy with my strikers, but I'm considering getting Silva in for the potential City backlash.

    Re: Bale

Real Madrid are playing Deportivo La Coruña on thursday for a friendly tournament. Word is that RM has not sold the TV rights yet, because they want to announce the signing of Bale first. This would make it the first game in which he appears, so they can sell the TV rights for more money.

Source is Marca, so not sure if entirely reliable, but chances are Bale will be a Madrid player somewhere within the next 3 days.

If I can recall correctly, the money from the TV deal for the league games is almost entirely divided between Madrid and Barcelona, while the smaller clubs (even Valencia, Atletico,... ) only get a small portion of the pie.
I'm pretty sure I've read that somewhere a while ago, but can't back it up with facts unfrotunately.

Everyone keeps thinking Giroud's on borrowed time since Arsene 'needs' to bring in a new striker before the window closes. I disagree. I think Wenger has faith in Giroud and said as much this weekend when he mentioned players need that second season in the EPL to get comfortable and confident.

    Boruc-Gazza
Collins Murner Chester (brayford and Clyne are the liabilities)
Coutinho Wally Hazard Mirallais (Williams is the liability)
    Dzeko Giroud Soldado
If I were NOT to WC, I'd have 4.5 in the bank. This week I'd do Hazard to HBA to have 7.5 in the bank. Then I'd do Dzeko---> RvP in the following week .

To be honest, I do think he should start next week... Still, I would rather wait.

or vice versa. they havent had a striker like Bony yet. His slow introduction has timed perfectly with my bringing him in. will start v west brom, will score v west brom.

    Migs - Lewis
    Ivanovic - Coleman - Murner - Chester - Brayford
    Hazard - Walcott - Coutinho - Mirallas - Kim
    Soldado - Giroud - Lambert

    1 FT

Ivan --> Zabaleta or Hazard --> Silva, the latter means I have to play Chester away at man city, the former means i play Kim at home to everton

don't like the double everton defence, would swap Baines for Jose Enrique or Toure and use the money to upgrade a striker (Bent -> Bony perhaps)

Cheers might get rid of Coleman (not had him from the start), Toure is good value but all my mini league rivals have him, Not sure with Bony, I'll keep the faith with Michu.
RVW is tempting me, I always have Baines!

Downgrade Baines to Toure, perhaps downgrade a midfielder. Upgrade Campbell.
