Gameweek 2 stutters to a close with a cagey night of football at Old Trafford. Robin Van Persie owners are left frustrated as Chelsea register another clean sheet to keep the Dutchman quiet, while Juan Mata owners will be contemplating a transfer out after the Spaniard, along with Romelu Lukaku, warmed the bench for the entire 90 minutes.

Van Persie Draws a Rare Blank
The Dutchman’s failure to produce last night proved significant right across the Fantasy games. Van Persie had started the season with two goals against Wigan in the Community Shield and followed that up with a brace against Swansea as David Moyes’ side racked up a comprehensive win at the Liberty – as a result, he was the most popular captain and vice-captain in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game for Gameweek 2. With Wayne Rooney back in the starting line-up and tucking in behind, the omens looked good for Van Persie but, in something of a rarity, he was well-marshalled by the opposition defence and failed to register a single effort on target over the 90 minutes.

A trip to Anfield now beckons and with the Reds yet to concede this season, some will be contemplating switching the armband this weekend after last night’s disappointment. In a week that has seen Daniel Sturridge, Roberto Soldado and Olivier Giroud continue their goalscoring exploits, and with Christian Benteke quickly off the mark, those who opted to go without the Dutchman breathed a sigh of relief, while after the game, his manager cited the hosts’ lack of creativity as reason for Van Persie’s off-night:

“We lacked a little bit of cutting edge in the final pass or cross tonight..We went with three forward players as we wanted to try to make sure we won the game. There will be lots of games where I’ll decide not to play an attacking team, but that won’t make me a defensive coach. Just like tonight doesn’t make me an attacking coach. Tonight we felt that was the best approach. We did everything we could, we just lacked a ball to get Robin [van Persie] away for a chance to score, or Danny [Welbeck] that opportunity. We had one or two close calls, but it just wasn’t going to go in tonight.”

Mourinho Shuffles Up Front
Once again, the Chelsea teamsheet caught Fantasy managers by surprise as Jose Mourinho altered his options up top. Having started with Fernando Torres then Demba Ba over the two Gameweek 1 matches, Mourinho fielded new boy Andre Schurrle up front and omitted the Senegal striker from the squad altogether – leaving Romelu Lukaku as an unused sub, despite the Belgian registering a hat-trick against United for West Brom on the final day of last season.

While that move may have raised an eyebrow or two, the decision to also leave Juan Mata on the bench for the entire game was a real shocker. Even when he chose to replace Kevin De Bruyne on the hour mark, it was Torres who was handed the chance, with a personnel reshuffle allowing the Spaniard to lead the line as Schurrle dropped back into the attacking midfield three. With Mata and Lukaku playing just 65 and 40 minutes respectively over the three games so far, the duo are in danger of becoming peripheral figures under the new Blues boss – Mourinho explained his four attacking starters afforded him more “mobility” before commenting on his reason for omitting Mata post-match:

“He had a very small pre-season after the Confederations Cup, during that small pre-season he was injured. He started training two days before we played the first Premier League match, and had a match last week against Aston Villa, a difficult one, and today I decided to put him on the bench. I played with De Bruyne on the right because I know De Bruyne will give complete control of Evra defensively. When Juan plays on the right he comes more inside. I don’t say the kid is more tactically disciplined but is more adapted to that situation. I wanted Oscar to play behind the striker so I decided not to play Juan. Minute 70, 75, I was feeling [it was] difficult to win, I don’t want to lose, so I made the changes to control the last few minutes of the game, but no chance Juan goes anywhere.”

Blues Remain Resolute
While Mourinho’s selection up top continues to alternate, the Chelsea defence has been remarkably consistent. With their first three league games taking place over eight days, many had anticipated a degree of rest and rotation but the same four have started every game in front of Petr Cech, with John Terry and Gary Cahill forging a solid partnership at the heart of defence. The knee injury worries which saw Rafa Benitez continually rotate the Chelsea skipper last term seem to be behind Terry and with a relatively budget friendly price, his security of starts is likely to see him pick up new investors once the blank is out of the way. It’s just one goal against in three so far under Mourinho, then; it’s also worth noting that, despite conceding to Christian Benteke last Wednesday, the Blues backline limited the Belgian to a single strike all game – a sign they are returning to the resilience of old demonstrated during The “Special One’s” first spell at the helm.

Give me the rest of your team first.

I'm sure you don't have Coutinho, so all three are frankly speaking great options. It's like a coin-toss, can go either way.

Gun to my head - Soldado and Benteke.

Why? Sturridge is just there for 3 more gw's and then Suarez kicks in. Surely Coutinho will do something now.

I'm expecting Lamela to play this weekend, and hopefully kick off his career with a great debut. The odds are highly unlikely that Spurs will not score from open-play this week. It's been 180 minutes in the Premier League without a goal from open-goa....Betting we will score more than 1 goal from open-play this weekend.

    Morning all.
There were threr 0-0 games in this gameweek

    Everton 0 - 0 WBA
    Baines 3 , jagielka 3 , Foster 3 , Jones 3.

    Newcastle 0 - 0 West Ham
    Colocinni 3 , Santon 3 , Collins 1.

    Man Utd 0 - 0 Chelsea
    Vidic 3 , Ferdinand 2 , Evra 2 , Cahill 2 , Terry 2 , Cole 2.

    A few observations :
    - The Baps system is a different animal this year.
    - Defenders have become more valuable with a clean sheet.
    - anything from 3-6 (so far) players can be rewarded
    - the old 3/2/1 system is dead , 3points and 2points rewards are easily shared

There will be more points on offer this year for Baps and warrants attention and should be part of your strategy.
I for one am a little unhappy with the allocation , I think 3-2-1 was better ,
But it's the same rules for all and I feel WE need to adapt and quickly.

Any other thoughts or theories ?

There have been a more than average amount of clean sheets so far, I don't think that trend will continue for the lower clubs. So it may be worthwile spending a bit more at the back to get defenders from the top clubs.

So your theory copper fastens mine :
We cannot afford Rvp as at the moment a decent pairing of Soldado / Sturridge / Bentekke / Dzecko / lambert will equal Rvps returns and also allows you to have say Terry / Zaba / Ferd / walker etc in your team as with rvp your also looking at a case of an uber cheap defence .
I have Rvp but first chances comes I'm out ,
I want to spread the cash on my defenders ,
In the past IMO - your defence just wasn't worth it .
My Strategy / Rvp dilemma sorted.

Frank at TotalFPL is a studious bloke and is very quick to adapt to anything FPL Towers can throw at him, whereas FISO like to party a bit more. So I'd go with TotalFPL for now - but FISO will catch up.

Need some help prioritising transfers please. Trying to steer clear of hits this year and also would rather not WC just yet.

    Szczesny

    Rat / Ward / Coleman

    Wally / Silva / Mirallas / Kim

    Soldado / Studge / Lambert

    (Harper / Toure / Chester / Hazard)

    So...

Rat (before he drops again) ---> ???
    or
Hazard (before he drops) ---> ???

    Any advice or ideas?

Can any Stoke fans (or persons in the know) shed light on Marc Wilson?
Looks like he played CMF this weekend, Is he a guaranteed starter for the foreseeable future?
Or would Pieters be a better solution with 5M to spend on a DF?

Also is this a silly week to WC? Just doubting a rash click with international boredom upon us after this GW!

    Hi Michael,

On Saturday, we were playing away from home in front of 50,000 fans cheering Newcastle on and we stopped them having any shots on target. That tells you everything about the quality of our defending. From that point of view I'm delighted with the team.

We were disappointed we didn't convert our clear-cut chances as when you play away from home and create three clear-cut chances like we did you've got to take at least one of them.

All three of them were headers and all three of them were unmarked and six yards out and not one of them hit the target. On top of that Winston Reid had a couple of really good chances and Joe Cole missed one right at the end.

Overall though it was a great performance and a good result and we move on undefeated with one win and one draw.

We now look ahead to Cheltenham Town on Tuesday, where we’ll see some changes to the team. Ravel Morrison came on against Newcastle as we were very pleased with what he did in pre-season for us. We can see the talent and the only way to do it is to get him in the first team and get some minutes on the board. He'll play against Cheltenham on Tuesday and we'll see how he does and keep an eye on him.

Thanks to those of you that made the long trip to Newcastle – your support was superb as ever.

    Big Sam.

is the BP system broken? Its favouring defenders who didn't really do much in a draw while ignoring players who are creating chances?

imo the old system of awarding just 3-2-1 bps is much better than the current system of awarding multiples of bp

Yep - needs a tiebreaker so 13BPs aren't awarded in a game. Defender A with 23 blocks/interceptions/clearances gets the same credit as Defender B who has 16. In the case of a tie in the BPs defender A should be given the bonus point.

It seems to favour actual defending more than attacking. So a defender who goes on an attacking run won't get as many BP as the CB who stays back to block/intercept the ball.

What is the general consensus on taking point hits? I am thinking about taking 8 points over the enxt 2 gws?

I am quite happy with most of my team but there are some spots I am unhappy with and need replacement. The question is just who to bring in and how fast.

    Boruc ( Davis)
    Toure/Coleman/Dawson/(chester)/(ward)
    HAZARD/Walcott/Snodgrass)(?)/Mirallas/(Williams)
    LUKAKU/RvP/Dzeko
    1.5m in the bank.

Lukaku seems the most obvious choise for replacement but I am also not happy with Hazard en doubtful over Snodgrass since Norwich is playing so awful and I am afraid Dzeko's gametime will be limited in the very near future thanks to Negredo.

My idea was to transfer Hazard and Lukaku out for Nolan and Aguero next gameweek and take a 4 point hit and transfer Snodgrass and Dzeko out the week after that for Brady and Benteke. I really like Nolan and Brady and Benteke have some nice fixtures in gw 4+5. This will cost me 8 points in 2 weeks but I feel my team would be much better. What do you guys think? And if u dont agree with my reasoning what would you guys do? All suggestions are welcome!

I'm happy to take points hits. But personally I never take a points hit for 1 week alone, I take them as part of a long term plan.

My points hits don't always pay off in that very same gameweek, but in the long term I would hope to see the benefits.

I am also happy to take points hits for defenders.
