Tottenham added to their defensive ranks last Friday afternoon with the purchase of Vlad Chiriches from Steaua Bucharest. A long-term target of Andre Villas-Boas, the 23-year-old arrives at the Lane for a fee reported to be in the region of £8.5m and will bolster the Spurs backline after both Steven Caulker and William Gallas departed over the summer.

A highly-rated centre-back, Chiriches has been previously linked with both Barcelona and Milan – as his new manager points out, though, it’s not only his technical qualities that have persuaded Tottenham to splash the cash on the Romanian:

“He is an interesting player that has been followed by lots of teams. He has tremendous qualities coming out with the ball and that’s what we like in our defenders. He is a great leader.”

The History

Having spent a year with Benfica’s youth system in 2007, Chiriches’ senior career kicked off the following season with Romanian lower-league side International Curtea de Arges after injury forced him to return to his native country. After a couple of campaigns, in which he helped his side gain promotion to the top-flight and produced a single goal in 41 appearances, the centre-half moved to Pandurii Târgu Jiu.

Chiriches featured 39 times over a season-and-a-half in his new surrounds before making his way to Steaua Bucharest in the summer of 2011. His time in the Romanian capital proved successful – with 42 league games under his belt, he helped Steaua register a league and cup double last time round.

The Prospects

With Jan Vertonghen pretty much nailed-on for one of the centre-half positions, Chiriches is set to vie with Michael Dawson and Younes Kaboul for the remaining spot in the heart of the Tottenham back-four. The latter is working his way back towards full fitness after long-term injuries and looks likely to be eased into contention – having started Villas-Boas’ first game in charge of the north London club in 2012/13, the Frenchman hasn’t featured in the league since due to knee and thigh complaints and clearly won’t be rushed back.

Dawson was on the verge of being sold at the start of last term and although he subsequently convinced his manager he deserved a regular role, it remains to be seen where he stands in the pecking order now. Chiriches’ arrival, allied with Kaboul’s recuperation, surely places question marks over his future game time. The former Forest man has been criticised for his lack of mobility at the back – hardly ideal for Villas-Boas’ penchant for playing a high defensive line and not the most conducive to clean sheet potential from a Fantasy perspective either.

Chiriches, on the other hand, is a far more agile option and in many ways possesses the same defensive qualities as Vertonghen. Back in his homeland, the 23-year-old has often been compared to Steaua’s legendary centre-half Miodrag Belodedici, who has summed up what Tottenham’s new boy will bring to the English top-flight:

“Chiriches is strong, fast and intelligent. He can definitely go very far. There are few footballers who can do what he does in his position, and he is ready to take risks going forward. In my era, coaches wouldn’t let me touch the ball so many times.”

It remains uncertain whether the new boy will be handed an immediate start, though. Looking back to last season, Villas-Boas initially kept faith with Brad Friedel and introduced Hugo Lloris to the first XI via European competition before the latter’s form and suitability to Tottenham’s tactics made his role at the back a formality – the same situation could unfold, allowing Dawson a temporary stay of execution.

Up next, Spurs have a favourable run of fixtures that look set to offer Fantasy managers plenty chances for points at both ends of the pitch. Home games against Norwich, West Ham, Hull and Newcastle, in addition to trips to Cardiff and Villa in the next eight Gameweeks, is one of the kindest runs around; certainly, Chiriches looks one to consider should he be swiftly introduced to first-team proceedings.

Coming in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 6.3 in the Sky Sports game and 3.0 in the Sun Dream Team, the Romanian is slightly more expensive than both Dawson and Kaboul in FPL but is significantly cheaper than the 7.0 priced Vertonghen and could offer us a relatively cheap route into a backline that has conceded just a single goal thus far.

I've solved the problem of the Qatar World Cup in 2022.

When qualification games come for the World Cup in 2022, all the major European league nations simply let the likes of
    San Marino
    Liechtenstein
    Malta
    Cyprus
    Andorra
    Faroe Islands
    Armenia
    Scotland and Wales
    Iceland

Qualify. That way we can all get on with the job of proper football and let Blatter and that pathetic dinosaur who runs EUFA stew in their own juice.

    Sorted. Everybody's happy! 🙂

I'm not really sure why they can't build air-conditioned stadiums, like originally planned. The USA, who they beat out to hold the World Cup, could hold the World Cup right now in fully air-conditioned stadiums. There's two air-conditioned stadiums I can see from here if I walked up to the roof. Surely the Qatari oil money can pay for a few.

Is this best possible WC team?

    Goal: Mignolet (Daniels)

Def: Agger, Zab, Coleman, Cheriches (Baker)

Heavy on Liverpool D with great fixtures, has the 2 best offensive defenders so far in Zab and Coleman. Baker might come back to get playing time and gets me an extra .1 at the end of my bench. Cheriches is a better player than Dawson, will get the minutes now or later.

Mids: Silva, Ozil, Eriksen, (Barkley, Brady)

Setup men for City, Arsenal, Tot'nam and Everton with Brady for good measure.

    Forwards: Soldado, Benteke, Giroud

Three most consistent scorers thus far with great fixtures for Tot and Arsenal to come.

      Best? No.

Should only have nailed on players. The following are from it: Chiriches Baker Eriksen Barkley.

Assists and midfielders dont' carry the same value as in years past, so your selection process for midfielders is flawed.

I'm not fully sold on Everton defenders tbh, Martinez's attacking style with Wigan was very exposed at the back and with Fellani gone now they could leak a few goals.

I'm going to bring Baker back in as a sub too, i think he's the smart choice for that role.

Not sure Silva offers enough in attack/goals with City's formation.

      Good front line.

        I live in FiDi, yeah.

Some of these guys I'm selecting I'm worried I won't get another shot at. If Ozil comes out and sets up a couple of goals he's going to jump .3 in value right off the bat, especially if Wally is out.

Coleman just won't stop rising. I don't like Everton's fixtures or D either.

I don't know who the goalscoring mids are going to be if Wally is out. Lamela/Lambert?

          Michu.

Everton's defence isn't bad but Shamey's appeal is his attacking intent.

Saw below, Welbeck's a good choice. You never know how Kone and Jelavic might react to the Lukaku competition. They might have stormers v Chelsea and Lukaku benched for a while though I'd say Lukaku will be straight in against the Hammers in GW5.

Good team. Better with a rotating keeper.
Defense is good but too expensive, Agger may not nailed-on. Get a 5th defender who'll play.

Nice midfield. Not sure about Erikesen yet. Would be a better pick if he was assisting Suarez or Van Persie rather than Soldado.Lukaku's a better choice than Soldado if he's nailed-on.

USA officially in! Good on you boys.

(ESPN is showing them celebrating chugging beers and spraying beer all over... I hope the headline story tomorrow isn't something about setting a bad example written by some tightwad).

First time we'll be first seed out of CONCACAF too (probably). Avoid that group of death!

Another slip-up for the Czechs...shocking. But I'll take it. Just gotta keep them Danes at bay (and then get Stoichkov back in shape for next summer...)

You think there's any chance Berbatov would come out of retirement, a la Carragher?

0%, sadly. And we don't have a single CF in our squad. For the last 2-3 years we've had CAM players play up top, like I. Popov and A. Tonev. Long gone are the days of Penev, Stoichkov, and Berbatov...

Another fantastic header from Eddie Johnson. A lot of players who looked good in the Gold Cup looked good with the first team tonight. Goodson, Bedoya, Diskerud, and Donavon. I do hope Mexico get their act together, though.

Some of my favorite World Cup moments have involved Mexico, so it would be a shame for them to miss out. If they can keep that playoff spot they should beat Jordan though.

I do like Diskerud, I think there may be a spot for him in the 23. Not sure about Bedoya. I also think Beckerman is good in a pinch (if he has the right mentality that night), and he's made a real claim for a spot.

Bedoya probably doesn't have a permanent spot. He was good tonight though. Diskerud probably doesn't have a spot in the first 11 anytime soon, but I think he's the best we've got to replace Bradley. Goodson is my favorite though. I think he and Gonzalez might be the CB pair for the World Cup. We'll see what Klinsmann decides. He's done a great job so far.

    Early Bird Update

For those who have had a good start this season, this league is for you.

To qualify all you need is to have scored:

    67 in GW1
49 in GW2 with no hits or 54 with a hit. More hits equals higher score needed.
48 with no transfers in GW3 or 54 with a hit.

Code is 58-338 for those who pass these three points.
254 qualified. Plenty get knocked out each week.

Hi, all. Finally setting a proper WC team after soaking in the price changes.

    Mignolet, Alnwick,
    Zabaleta, Vidic, Coleman, Lovren, Yanga-Mbiwa,
Walcott, Lamela, Ben Arfa, Brady, Ward-Prowse,
    Sturridge, Benteke Giroud.

Have 2m in bank, probably to get Soldado in place pf Sturridge if he fails to recover.

Any other changes suggested which will help me to rise from the depths of 800k?

Not keen on Lampard as i prefer players nailed on. Can see Lampard being rested at the weekend then played in the champions league , also in a slightly more withdrawn role this season , and anyway i cant afford him !!

Who else intends to wildcard after gw11?

    International break

Players will have played 800-1000 mins so we have a reasonable reflection of their potential

Planning like this means future transfers can be focussed on players with good fix between now and gw11. I.e. after gw8 you're making fairly short-term purchases which allows a few gambles

With the Jan wildcard, it means you're splitting the season into three chunks of 11+ games, making it more manageable.

    Thoughts?

I have no plan for mine, except to save it until the opportunity presents itself. I think the 3 chunks idea and the international break idea are somewhat arbitrary. They may be factors, but if you only want to change 3 or 4 players and there are no bandwagons, then it doesn't make sense to use it because of those other criteria.

Guess it depends to what extent you play the fixtures. For me it is high up my list of priorities so it is easier to maintain a team with good fix over a shorter period. By the end of Jan wildcard window we will know who has a game in hand so can still load up on dgw players if desired

          Apparently if they play 4 2 3 1 he is....but in 4 3 3 he might not be.

Any news on Walcott after the England match? Any chance the knock he picked up reason for concern?

there was a tweet after the match from somebody winter (alex?) that said he was okay. Demi found it a few page back after someone else mentioned it.

think we'll know better friday, as some thought it might be the kind of injury that hurts more the next day than at the time of injury.

Not heard anything. I couldn't control my excitement at half time so went to bed and missed him being subbed off though.

My big wildcard dilema is Michu or Lamela

If i go Michu will put Soldado in ahead of Benteke

Same, problem with Michu is his fixtures... LIV cry ARS...after that his fixtures are amazing, the question is do you want to carry him for the Liv & Ars fixtures or give Lamela a chance to shine for NOR car

Yes choosing Lamela (or Eriksen - over looked on here IMO) or Soldado is tricky. I'm tempted by one of the mids just because there are more forward options.

stretch the ticker through GW17 & sort

Liverpool easiest sched, Swansea 2nd easiest sched - all of Swansea's tough games come in bunches... next bunch after Arsenal game starts GW18

Morning Dz, have two plans for my Rvp team and need some advise

    Current team:
    Boruc (foster)
    coleman ivan chester (murner ward)
    miralas wally tarabt coutinho (kim)
    soldado lambert dzeko...have 4.8m itb

    A:
gw4: miralas + dzeko >> brady + Rvp (-4)....good transfers imo. will play 3-4-3 this gw
gw5: foster + kim >> speroni/myhill + PabloH (-4)..decent transfer as i free up funds in foster is injured and pabloH has a good fixture next week..will play 4-3-3 with ivan (FUL), coleman, murner (AVL) and ward (SWA)

    B:
    gw4: Ivan + dzeko >> fonte/lowten + Rvp (-4)..decent transfer..will play 3-4-3 with fonte/lowten + coleman and chester this gw all with home games.
gw5: same transfers as in plan A

to Conclude :), strategy A gives me more flexibility to play 4-3-3 with Ivan who i will downgrade to sakho/koscielny in gw6. Strategy B allows me to retain Mirallas who has looked good without points and can still play 3-4-3 as i have good defender rotations for the next few gw's

I'm bringing in rvp +Brady for dzeko + coutinho. So pretty similar. I don't have other ways to fund it though.
