Tottenham added to their defensive ranks last Friday afternoon with the purchase of Vlad Chiriches from Steaua Bucharest. A long-term target of Andre Villas-Boas, the 23-year-old arrives at the Lane for a fee reported to be in the region of £8.5m and will bolster the Spurs backline after both Steven Caulker and William Gallas departed over the summer.

A highly-rated centre-back, Chiriches has been previously linked with both Barcelona and Milan – as his new manager points out, though, it’s not only his technical qualities that have persuaded Tottenham to splash the cash on the Romanian:

“He is an interesting player that has been followed by lots of teams. He has tremendous qualities coming out with the ball and that’s what we like in our defenders. He is a great leader.”

The History

Having spent a year with Benfica’s youth system in 2007, Chiriches’ senior career kicked off the following season with Romanian lower-league side International Curtea de Arges after injury forced him to return to his native country. After a couple of campaigns, in which he helped his side gain promotion to the top-flight and produced a single goal in 41 appearances, the centre-half moved to Pandurii Târgu Jiu.

Chiriches featured 39 times over a season-and-a-half in his new surrounds before making his way to Steaua Bucharest in the summer of 2011. His time in the Romanian capital proved successful – with 42 league games under his belt, he helped Steaua register a league and cup double last time round.

The Prospects

With Jan Vertonghen pretty much nailed-on for one of the centre-half positions, Chiriches is set to vie with Michael Dawson and Younes Kaboul for the remaining spot in the heart of the Tottenham back-four. The latter is working his way back towards full fitness after long-term injuries and looks likely to be eased into contention – having started Villas-Boas’ first game in charge of the north London club in 2012/13, the Frenchman hasn’t featured in the league since due to knee and thigh complaints and clearly won’t be rushed back.

Dawson was on the verge of being sold at the start of last term and although he subsequently convinced his manager he deserved a regular role, it remains to be seen where he stands in the pecking order now. Chiriches’ arrival, allied with Kaboul’s recuperation, surely places question marks over his future game time. The former Forest man has been criticised for his lack of mobility at the back – hardly ideal for Villas-Boas’ penchant for playing a high defensive line and not the most conducive to clean sheet potential from a Fantasy perspective either.

Chiriches, on the other hand, is a far more agile option and in many ways possesses the same defensive qualities as Vertonghen. Back in his homeland, the 23-year-old has often been compared to Steaua’s legendary centre-half Miodrag Belodedici, who has summed up what Tottenham’s new boy will bring to the English top-flight:

“Chiriches is strong, fast and intelligent. He can definitely go very far. There are few footballers who can do what he does in his position, and he is ready to take risks going forward. In my era, coaches wouldn’t let me touch the ball so many times.”

It remains uncertain whether the new boy will be handed an immediate start, though. Looking back to last season, Villas-Boas initially kept faith with Brad Friedel and introduced Hugo Lloris to the first XI via European competition before the latter’s form and suitability to Tottenham’s tactics made his role at the back a formality – the same situation could unfold, allowing Dawson a temporary stay of execution.

Up next, Spurs have a favourable run of fixtures that look set to offer Fantasy managers plenty chances for points at both ends of the pitch. Home games against Norwich, West Ham, Hull and Newcastle, in addition to trips to Cardiff and Villa in the next eight Gameweeks, is one of the kindest runs around; certainly, Chiriches looks one to consider should he be swiftly introduced to first-team proceedings.

Coming in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 6.3 in the Sky Sports game and 3.0 in the Sun Dream Team, the Romanian is slightly more expensive than both Dawson and Kaboul in FPL but is significantly cheaper than the 7.0 priced Vertonghen and could offer us a relatively cheap route into a backline that has conceded just a single goal thus far.

Would you pay 5.0m for a Southampton defender? Looking at Lovren, potentially. They have really nice home fixtures in the next month or so. All their game so far have been very low scoring and he seems to pick up his fair share of BAPs.

Lovren, Yoshida, and Fonte are all vying for 2 starting CB spots. Poch seems to like all of them. Just get Shaw if you really want a Soton defender.

Have been looking at the above and wondering if they are worth 5 all have good fixtures coming up and centrebacks who might attract bonuses

I was just looking at Fulham because of their amazing fixtures. Hangeland and Bent were the only options I would consider, and no room for Bent. Strongly considering Hangeland - but not sure if 5.0 is too much to spend on a defender who you won't play when the fixtures turn bad.

If I had a 5m defender, it'd be him or Collocini. I think the premium CBs for the mid-to-lower table clubs won't do much better than the attacking fullbacks for the season, but their extra points should coincide with their clean sheets (BPs instead of attacking points), making them score more when you play them. I'm not sure if I'm willing to regularly bench a 5m defender, and I think you have to for Collicini/Hangeland/Lovren to be worth it.

Now that there's a chance Toure might play this week, do I need to make any transfers on this lot?:

    Boruc (Foster)
    Coleman, Toure, Chester, Clyne (Collins)
    Walcott, Silva, Coutinho (Snodgrass, Kim)
    Benteke (c), Soldado (vc), Giroud

Foster needs to go at some point and downgrading one of the mids (Snod/Cout) to Brady may also be a good shout. Any transfers you see worth doing or should I just save my free?

Ferdinand less nailed on, will get rotated, shadow of his former self. Choice was binary.

On ManU, I'd rather own Evra, Rafael, Vidic and Evans in that order (Evans only after others pick up knocks).

On Arsenal, still unsure between Mertesacker and Koscielny, but for now Koscielny is .1 cheaper, which may or may not change by end of week.

If you really want a 4.5 goalkeeper, McGregor covers Mignolet's bad weeks before the January wildcard. I don't know that I'd pick up Zabaleta and Coleman if I didn't have them. I like the Hazard pick. I don't have him, but he's definitely a good choice, particularly at his decreased price.

I've had Coleman from the beginning but just got Zabaleta in my WC for City cover. Hazard is Chelsea's most irreplaceable attacker IMO. Fingers crossed he starts this week.

    Hey all!

Currently on holiday in Bali! What a fantastic place

I was just thinking about the discussions on how the amount of cs kept so far is so high compared to other seasons as well as the goals scored being low.

People claim this is nothing to pay too much attention to but how about if we factor in the fact that there have also been an unusual amount of penalties taken?

Would be interesting to see how many cs would have occurred if no penalties have been given...

    Thoughts?

If you go RVP-less I wouldn't go for a midfield of Lamela, Michu and Walcott and a strike force of Benteke Giroud and Soldado. That would mean your doubling up on Arsenal and Tottenham. I'm going for that strike force and Walcott. Instead of Lamela try Coutinho or Lampard (maybe Hazard if you have the money) or anyone else.

The highest I've reached is div 5 and I struggle sometimes. Let me ask, do you play with a defensive mentality, ie one bar less than neutral? I always try to attack always as everyone will concede goals it seems. This is only somewhat successful. I usually play high pressure defense at all times against friends but online this has met with poor results. But I looooove aggressive defense.

naw it's all about how you defend tbh. it's easy to score goals. it's NOT easy to defend(for me atleast), always have the urge to commit, than to stand off, that cost me tons of goals conceded.

Just recently I played the seasons and easily promoted 3 times methinks 15 winning straight.
Low division tbf so nothing to be proud of. Hopefully I can be in the top 3 division sometime around this week 😉

    Mignolet--Lewis

    Coleman--Vidic--Shaw--Ward--Chester

    Walcott--B.Arfa--Lampard--Brady--Barkley

    Benteke--RVP--Sturridge

Lack of spurs cover would worry me with their fixtures, but you can't have everything... Pretty good for an rvp team.

I'd get a cheaper keeper than mignolet, maybe boruc+davis, that'll get you save points...then I'd get sakho instead of shaw and BINGO...you get the same clean sheet points with the extra save points

if you're worried about sakho just get kosielny instead...the "cheap keeper beats cheap defender" theory still applies

personally i don't think vidic is worth the cash either...you could get somebody like kosielny/sakho instead and get arnautovic instead of brady...in my opinion hull were way overrated in the RMT last time i looked at it...they couldn't score in the championship last season so what exactly has changed except they've got much tougher opponents now?

I was surprised he played 90 minutes after the injury and that seems like a good sign, except that swelling and soreness the day after could be a factor. He seems like a trooper though.

Wildcard team ready to rock 'n' roll GW4!

    Mignolet Steer
    Evra Terry Walker Koscielny Ward
    Walcott Coutinho Ben-Arfa Brady Ward-Prowse
    Soldado Giroud Benteke

Might even swap Terry for Vidic for the Palace match and then swap him in after.

Going heavy at the back until more clear mids appear.
    Countinho to Michu GW7!

"Going heavy at the back"...if the clean sheets stop so will the bonus...what evidence is there that there will be more clean sheets this season?

your plan is one giant knee-jerk

save money in defence and get van persie instead of soldado (who hasn't scored yet except through randomness)

also note what i wrote above about cheap keepers (above)

      chester>ward imo

        I don't want RVP.
Midfielders won't get a bonus if they assist, only if they score.
Clean sheets won't stop. There'll still be clean sheets.
If anyone gonna get a clean sheet it'll be the top teams who have decent fixtures coming up.

Your plans pretty weird as well...
        Sakho isn't nailed on
Yeah you'd get save points. But those keepers would also lose points when they concede two goals. Which they probably will.
Bringing in Sakho would mean taking out a player from defence who could also get clean sheets

          "I don't want RVP."...fair enough

"Midfielders won't get a bonus if they assist, only if they score"...i know

"Clean sheets won't stop. There'll still be clean sheets"...guesswork...what has changed from last season?...refs have been getting tougher and tougher in recent seasons...unless this changes the goals will flow imo

"Your plans pretty weird as well"...it's a standard plan plenty of people have been following for years

"Yeah you'd get save points. But those keepers would also lose points when they concede two goals. Which they probably will"...you missed the point...assuming all other things are equal Boruc+Sakho will beat Mignolet+Shaw...shaw will lose as many points as boruc for conceding 2 goals...this theory only fails if you think shaw will get more attacking points+bonus than sakho or if any of the players are not nailed on...but the theoretical argument is indisputable

"Sakho isn't nailed on"...most likely he will be...but it's fair to say he might not play on monday...that's why i mentioned kosielny...the same argument holds true for Arsenal+Southampton
