Tottenham added to their defensive ranks last Friday afternoon with the purchase of Vlad Chiriches from Steaua Bucharest. A long-term target of Andre Villas-Boas, the 23-year-old arrives at the Lane for a fee reported to be in the region of £8.5m and will bolster the Spurs backline after both Steven Caulker and William Gallas departed over the summer.

A highly-rated centre-back, Chiriches has been previously linked with both Barcelona and Milan – as his new manager points out, though, it’s not only his technical qualities that have persuaded Tottenham to splash the cash on the Romanian:

“He is an interesting player that has been followed by lots of teams. He has tremendous qualities coming out with the ball and that’s what we like in our defenders. He is a great leader.”

The History

Having spent a year with Benfica’s youth system in 2007, Chiriches’ senior career kicked off the following season with Romanian lower-league side International Curtea de Arges after injury forced him to return to his native country. After a couple of campaigns, in which he helped his side gain promotion to the top-flight and produced a single goal in 41 appearances, the centre-half moved to Pandurii Târgu Jiu.

Chiriches featured 39 times over a season-and-a-half in his new surrounds before making his way to Steaua Bucharest in the summer of 2011. His time in the Romanian capital proved successful – with 42 league games under his belt, he helped Steaua register a league and cup double last time round.

The Prospects

With Jan Vertonghen pretty much nailed-on for one of the centre-half positions, Chiriches is set to vie with Michael Dawson and Younes Kaboul for the remaining spot in the heart of the Tottenham back-four. The latter is working his way back towards full fitness after long-term injuries and looks likely to be eased into contention – having started Villas-Boas’ first game in charge of the north London club in 2012/13, the Frenchman hasn’t featured in the league since due to knee and thigh complaints and clearly won’t be rushed back.

Dawson was on the verge of being sold at the start of last term and although he subsequently convinced his manager he deserved a regular role, it remains to be seen where he stands in the pecking order now. Chiriches’ arrival, allied with Kaboul’s recuperation, surely places question marks over his future game time. The former Forest man has been criticised for his lack of mobility at the back – hardly ideal for Villas-Boas’ penchant for playing a high defensive line and not the most conducive to clean sheet potential from a Fantasy perspective either.

Chiriches, on the other hand, is a far more agile option and in many ways possesses the same defensive qualities as Vertonghen. Back in his homeland, the 23-year-old has often been compared to Steaua’s legendary centre-half Miodrag Belodedici, who has summed up what Tottenham’s new boy will bring to the English top-flight:

“Chiriches is strong, fast and intelligent. He can definitely go very far. There are few footballers who can do what he does in his position, and he is ready to take risks going forward. In my era, coaches wouldn’t let me touch the ball so many times.”

It remains uncertain whether the new boy will be handed an immediate start, though. Looking back to last season, Villas-Boas initially kept faith with Brad Friedel and introduced Hugo Lloris to the first XI via European competition before the latter’s form and suitability to Tottenham’s tactics made his role at the back a formality – the same situation could unfold, allowing Dawson a temporary stay of execution.

Up next, Spurs have a favourable run of fixtures that look set to offer Fantasy managers plenty chances for points at both ends of the pitch. Home games against Norwich, West Ham, Hull and Newcastle, in addition to trips to Cardiff and Villa in the next eight Gameweeks, is one of the kindest runs around; certainly, Chiriches looks one to consider should he be swiftly introduced to first-team proceedings.

Coming in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 6.3 in the Sky Sports game and 3.0 in the Sun Dream Team, the Romanian is slightly more expensive than both Dawson and Kaboul in FPL but is significantly cheaper than the 7.0 priced Vertonghen and could offer us a relatively cheap route into a backline that has conceded just a single goal thus far.

It's odd. It may seem like an advantage being n a wildcard with all these injuries, but I'm not that sure. The temptation is now to leave out the likes of Sturridge, Walcott, etc. Who then could easily play, getting points for those who didn't lose them, and meaning I have to waste post-WC transfers on getting them back.

Then again one doesn't want half-fit players on a w/c....

True. It has it's up and downside.

In the Sturridge case, I'm seeing it as a sign/reminder that Sturridge has a bad injury record. I've never had good luck owning him anyway(@Bolton/Chelsea) Makes my decision to select my front 3 just a little bit easier. I would want Suarez when he is back anyway.

Walcott I'm not so sure about. He also has a dodgy injury record, although he did well last season. I hope he makes it.

Yeah, I agree. It seems an easy-ish decision to leave STurridge out, given the competition for forward slots. Walcott is tougher. Either one goes for Ozil, or there aren't many options left for a premium midfielder, especially given injury doubts on Hazard and Silva.

Need to downgrade either Ivan or Miralas to fund my Rvp move so

    A: Ivan + Brady
    B: williams/fonte/lowtan + Miralas

A looks better i think but assuming i play a 3-4-3 i will only need to the defender to start in gw4 and gw7 hence B is an option..going with fonte would mean doubling up on saints def as i have boruc

        Boruc (foster)
        ivan coleman chester (murner ward)
        miralas wally coutinho tarabt (kim)
        soldado lambert Rvp

I am not a big fan of ivan given some gametime risk. not the best fixtures...was thinking
        gw5: foster + kim >> speroni + hernandez

I'd say Nani probably for this week.

Moyes did say that Fellaini would allow him to start other players, which to me suggests with Fellaini in we can move to 4-3-3, which means Kagawa will get into the team, but with international travelling probably more of a doubt this week.

Can understand (to an extent) why he hasn't played if using a 4-4-2.

    Early Bird Update

For those who have had a good start this season, this league is for you.

To qualify all you need is to have scored:

    67 in GW1
49 in GW2 with no hits or 54 with a hit. More hits equals higher score needed.
48 with no transfers in GW3 or 54 with a hit.

Code is 58-338 for those who pass these three points.
255 qualified. Plenty get knocked out each week.

      Hello,

I have been a soccer fan for 15 years and counting and I only just started fantasy league this season. I need some advice on my team and I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice. I used my WC this week and my sort of final draft is as follows:

      GK: Szczesny (Boruc)
DEF: Ivanovic -- Enrique-- Walker -- (Turner) -- (Chester)
      MID: Lampard -- Walcott -- Coutinho -- (Brady) -- (Ward-Prowse)
FWD: Benteke -- Soldado -- Giroud

I know no one has any idea on the perfect team but advice would be much welcomed!

      Thank you so much.

Hmmm. In your situation I would probably stick without RVP. I have soldado, sturridge and selling dzeko for RVP. If I already had giroud, I am pretty sure I'd keep.

Sturridge being an injury risk is one thing but until he actually loses minutes for liverpool, I don't want to deal in what ifs. A friend of mine avoided RVP for months when he started firing for arsenal on this basis!

Ozil too expensive IMO, but only reason i have giroud & wally is because ozil is sure to assist them quite a bit, ozil depends on someone to finish his great passes (he had the likes of benzema, Ronaldo at RM)

There is not some sort of freeze or price lock happening? Seems like several players have risen enough to justify an increase in price.

Ozil for Mata straight up? Mata is the superior player and proven in the Prem. 😆

Do you really think brady jwp and wittingham will getbthe job doen this season? Is it really worth it to take the risk? Why not buy pennant from stoke @ 4.5. Loads of experience and more of a threat than the rest?

Arsenal has an easy run for the next couple of gameweeks. Looks like one needs to buy some defenders from them. Looks like this season will be more dependant on expensive defenders rather than cheapies.

Ridiculous isn't it. An arsenal defender is arguably the number one choice right now given fixtures, last season's stats & squad stability

we'll just have to wait and see i guess, but getting rid of an in form defender and stand in captain doesnt make sense imo.

Tuesday night... He has 4 nights of sleep before his next game. I'm pretty sure he can catch his breath by then 😀

If moyes benches him, he is playing with fire whilst covered in petrol.

IMAGINE if he drops RVP and they fail to score vs palace. He would be dragged through the press with his clothes off while people defecated on him from a great height.

My metaphors may be a bit off today, granted.

Currently running a 5-2-3 plan with this defence:

    Walker Vidic Ivanovic Evra Enrique

Should I replace Evra with Mertesacker, or will Arsenal concede a lot this season?

I'm going with a cheapish backline and have Mert. Reckon he's good value for money. Doubling up on United may be risky but they have good fixtures and I expect them to get clean sheets.
