Tottenham added to their defensive ranks last Friday afternoon with the purchase of Vlad Chiriches from Steaua Bucharest. A long-term target of Andre Villas-Boas, the 23-year-old arrives at the Lane for a fee reported to be in the region of £8.5m and will bolster the Spurs backline after both Steven Caulker and William Gallas departed over the summer.

A highly-rated centre-back, Chiriches has been previously linked with both Barcelona and Milan – as his new manager points out, though, it’s not only his technical qualities that have persuaded Tottenham to splash the cash on the Romanian:

“He is an interesting player that has been followed by lots of teams. He has tremendous qualities coming out with the ball and that’s what we like in our defenders. He is a great leader.”

The History

Having spent a year with Benfica’s youth system in 2007, Chiriches’ senior career kicked off the following season with Romanian lower-league side International Curtea de Arges after injury forced him to return to his native country. After a couple of campaigns, in which he helped his side gain promotion to the top-flight and produced a single goal in 41 appearances, the centre-half moved to Pandurii Târgu Jiu.

Chiriches featured 39 times over a season-and-a-half in his new surrounds before making his way to Steaua Bucharest in the summer of 2011. His time in the Romanian capital proved successful – with 42 league games under his belt, he helped Steaua register a league and cup double last time round.

The Prospects

With Jan Vertonghen pretty much nailed-on for one of the centre-half positions, Chiriches is set to vie with Michael Dawson and Younes Kaboul for the remaining spot in the heart of the Tottenham back-four. The latter is working his way back towards full fitness after long-term injuries and looks likely to be eased into contention – having started Villas-Boas’ first game in charge of the north London club in 2012/13, the Frenchman hasn’t featured in the league since due to knee and thigh complaints and clearly won’t be rushed back.

Dawson was on the verge of being sold at the start of last term and although he subsequently convinced his manager he deserved a regular role, it remains to be seen where he stands in the pecking order now. Chiriches’ arrival, allied with Kaboul’s recuperation, surely places question marks over his future game time. The former Forest man has been criticised for his lack of mobility at the back – hardly ideal for Villas-Boas’ penchant for playing a high defensive line and not the most conducive to clean sheet potential from a Fantasy perspective either.

Chiriches, on the other hand, is a far more agile option and in many ways possesses the same defensive qualities as Vertonghen. Back in his homeland, the 23-year-old has often been compared to Steaua’s legendary centre-half Miodrag Belodedici, who has summed up what Tottenham’s new boy will bring to the English top-flight:

“Chiriches is strong, fast and intelligent. He can definitely go very far. There are few footballers who can do what he does in his position, and he is ready to take risks going forward. In my era, coaches wouldn’t let me touch the ball so many times.”

It remains uncertain whether the new boy will be handed an immediate start, though. Looking back to last season, Villas-Boas initially kept faith with Brad Friedel and introduced Hugo Lloris to the first XI via European competition before the latter’s form and suitability to Tottenham’s tactics made his role at the back a formality – the same situation could unfold, allowing Dawson a temporary stay of execution.

Up next, Spurs have a favourable run of fixtures that look set to offer Fantasy managers plenty chances for points at both ends of the pitch. Home games against Norwich, West Ham, Hull and Newcastle, in addition to trips to Cardiff and Villa in the next eight Gameweeks, is one of the kindest runs around; certainly, Chiriches looks one to consider should he be swiftly introduced to first-team proceedings.

Coming in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 6.3 in the Sky Sports game and 3.0 in the Sun Dream Team, the Romanian is slightly more expensive than both Dawson and Kaboul in FPL but is significantly cheaper than the 7.0 priced Vertonghen and could offer us a relatively cheap route into a backline that has conceded just a single goal thus far.

Need to hit reply at the bottom of the page!
If you captain RVP and he scores every week then maybe A but think you may get 1 week where Brady scores more than 2/3 points and 2 weeks when Lambert gets5/6.

With B Giroud & Tekkers could score every week. Think Lampard & Eriksen will both be rotated over the coming weeks.

My team with a potential -4 hit:

    Boruc (Marshall)
    Toure / Coleman / Chester / (Murner / Ward)
Walcott / Coutinho / Mirallas / Brady (Kim)
    RVP / Soldado / Benteke

Not too confident with the defence, but don't want to WC just yet. Mirallas seems to be a differential around these parts now.

Nice team, Arsenal have some very nice fixtures coming up. I might look to crowbar in an Arsenal def in coming weeks.

I really like your front 7. I don't see more than one CS though. Should be fine with RVP brace;)

I'll take one CS. The goals will come sooner or later and clean sheets will be harder to come by anyway. RVP brace will do very nicely 😀

fuml - how you doing mate? me and you both will have identical top 8s if you go for rvp. just like the good old days....

i took out silva for brady already. got 6.6m in bank and will transfer dzeko out for rvp barring no injuries.

rvp captain this week for most so cant risk it without him

Hey up mate, all is good with me thanks, just trying to sort things out after an indifferent start to the season. Haha, yeah we had similar teams last season after the Jan WC, but they worked a treat :).

Even with Silva fit I'm not too bothered about him. Will wait and see how the injuries are before doing anything.

Exactly, the captain choice is a lottery this week if it's not on RVP, should he run riot then it could be much to miss out on.

only reason i put silva was in due to damage limitations. everyone in my ML drafted him and captained him so i had to cover my a$$. took him out straight away though for brady just to fund rvp

Brady could do well anyway with his fixtures. Hull are playing some decent football from what I've seen so far. I need to have RVP in my team as a United fan, hate watching matches and hoping he doesn't go crazy. It's much better as an owner!

Who should I bring in to replace Mirallas?

    A) Nani (great fixtures, just signed new contract, however rotation risk)

    B) Lampard (proven goalscorer, on penalties, however rotation risk)

    C) Ben Arfa (on penalties, key player for Newcastle)

Didn't Lampard have a really limited pre-season, coming into the opening weekend of the premiership with a lack of match fitness?

Going with RVP this week for obvious fixture reasons...just as a pointer...Comparison tool > RVP GW1-3 2012 v RVP GW1-3 2013...shows a steep fall in quite a few key areas, not just goals...Probably says as much about United as RVP at the moment but worth a look...

Very limited sample. United have played Chelsea and Liverpool in what I think is two atypical games for United. Stats, both for United and RvP, will turn to the better. The question is if it will hit the heigths of last season.

I'm still pondering the decent defenders vs reasonable midfielders debate. What do people think is the better option:-

    A) Walker, P. Hernandez

    B) B. Turner, Lamps

My team as it stands, decided against WCing.
Would rather use my 2 Fts this week.

    Jaask
    Enrique-- Zaba--Lescott--dawson
    walcott--nolan--Barfa
    RVP-Soldado--Dzeko

Option 1: I want Benteke in this team. Want to go for Dzeko> Benteke but for that to happen, need to downgrade either lescott or zaba.
Thinking of going for Zaba>Chester and keeping 1m in the bank.

Option 2: The other option is that I leave the team as it is this week, bench Dzeko and go for Barkley in the playing 11.

    Subs: Barkley, Rav Morrison, Baker

    Which of the two guys?

It's very close for me. Planning on having uts spurs ars defenders so 4-3-3 not an option. So the question is Lampard or P.Hernandez for me. I don't see Pablo exploding due to one good GW. Lampard will score once in a while.

Thoughts between Kyle Walker and Vertonghen?

    I currently have

    Vorm, Marshall
    Coleman, Toure, Turner, Mbiwa, Chester
    Walcott, Silva, Michu, Mirallas, Barkley
    Negredo, Soldado, Lambert

Plan is this week Toure and Silva > One of the above, plus Paulinho

    Then over next few weeks

    Mbiwa/Turner > Koscielny
    Barkley > Brady (probably)
