Tottenham added to their defensive ranks last Friday afternoon with the purchase of Vlad Chiriches from Steaua Bucharest. A long-term target of Andre Villas-Boas, the 23-year-old arrives at the Lane for a fee reported to be in the region of £8.5m and will bolster the Spurs backline after both Steven Caulker and William Gallas departed over the summer.

A highly-rated centre-back, Chiriches has been previously linked with both Barcelona and Milan – as his new manager points out, though, it’s not only his technical qualities that have persuaded Tottenham to splash the cash on the Romanian:

“He is an interesting player that has been followed by lots of teams. He has tremendous qualities coming out with the ball and that’s what we like in our defenders. He is a great leader.”

The History

Having spent a year with Benfica’s youth system in 2007, Chiriches’ senior career kicked off the following season with Romanian lower-league side International Curtea de Arges after injury forced him to return to his native country. After a couple of campaigns, in which he helped his side gain promotion to the top-flight and produced a single goal in 41 appearances, the centre-half moved to Pandurii Târgu Jiu.

Chiriches featured 39 times over a season-and-a-half in his new surrounds before making his way to Steaua Bucharest in the summer of 2011. His time in the Romanian capital proved successful – with 42 league games under his belt, he helped Steaua register a league and cup double last time round.

The Prospects

With Jan Vertonghen pretty much nailed-on for one of the centre-half positions, Chiriches is set to vie with Michael Dawson and Younes Kaboul for the remaining spot in the heart of the Tottenham back-four. The latter is working his way back towards full fitness after long-term injuries and looks likely to be eased into contention – having started Villas-Boas’ first game in charge of the north London club in 2012/13, the Frenchman hasn’t featured in the league since due to knee and thigh complaints and clearly won’t be rushed back.

Dawson was on the verge of being sold at the start of last term and although he subsequently convinced his manager he deserved a regular role, it remains to be seen where he stands in the pecking order now. Chiriches’ arrival, allied with Kaboul’s recuperation, surely places question marks over his future game time. The former Forest man has been criticised for his lack of mobility at the back – hardly ideal for Villas-Boas’ penchant for playing a high defensive line and not the most conducive to clean sheet potential from a Fantasy perspective either.

Chiriches, on the other hand, is a far more agile option and in many ways possesses the same defensive qualities as Vertonghen. Back in his homeland, the 23-year-old has often been compared to Steaua’s legendary centre-half Miodrag Belodedici, who has summed up what Tottenham’s new boy will bring to the English top-flight:

“Chiriches is strong, fast and intelligent. He can definitely go very far. There are few footballers who can do what he does in his position, and he is ready to take risks going forward. In my era, coaches wouldn’t let me touch the ball so many times.”

It remains uncertain whether the new boy will be handed an immediate start, though. Looking back to last season, Villas-Boas initially kept faith with Brad Friedel and introduced Hugo Lloris to the first XI via European competition before the latter’s form and suitability to Tottenham’s tactics made his role at the back a formality – the same situation could unfold, allowing Dawson a temporary stay of execution.

Up next, Spurs have a favourable run of fixtures that look set to offer Fantasy managers plenty chances for points at both ends of the pitch. Home games against Norwich, West Ham, Hull and Newcastle, in addition to trips to Cardiff and Villa in the next eight Gameweeks, is one of the kindest runs around; certainly, Chiriches looks one to consider should he be swiftly introduced to first-team proceedings.

Coming in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 6.3 in the Sky Sports game and 3.0 in the Sun Dream Team, the Romanian is slightly more expensive than both Dawson and Kaboul in FPL but is significantly cheaper than the 7.0 priced Vertonghen and could offer us a relatively cheap route into a backline that has conceded just a single goal thus far.

I've managed to create the perfect RVP team:

    Migs / Daniels
    Baines / Collins / Yanga-Mbiwa / Okore / Chester
    Walcott / Lampard / Nolan / Fer / Brady
    RVP / Giroud / Lambert

Okay not perfect and Fer may be a punt but generally looks good, right?

Villa have let in four goals against Arsenal/Chelsea/Liverpool...I bet a lot of teams do a lot worse than that against those teams...It's no reason to get a Villa defender in but it's going in the right direction now...

      I like it man
Nothing wrong with a punt in Fer, he's been impressive and I like Okore as well, he;s a very good player who will probably keep his place at Villa.
Nolan is the one I would change from all of them, HBA or Mirallas are my preferences there

Thanks. What don't you like about Nolan? He's WHam's main attacking threat at the moment and for 7.3 I think he's great value.

What are your thoughts on Baines -> Coleman and then upgrade another defender to Vidic/Cole/JEnrique? I love Baines but he is so expensive.

I think Coleman will deliver better value than Baines over the season. The only way he wont os if Everton get 4/5 penalties...
The money saved could well be spent elsewhere in my opinion, especially in a team with RVP.
I'm going with a United, Spurs and Liverpool defenders for the nxt 6/7 games. Arsenal have good fixtures too, maybe Mert is worth a gamble as you have Migs already?

You're right about Nolan. I just think HBA has more magic and better fixtures but Nolan could well outscore him anyway, go with your gut.

I'm in the U.S. so maybe I just don't get it, but can someone explain to me the level of negativity surrounding the England team? They get a decent result against a decent opponent on the road (in a game where a loss could have been really bad), yet all I read about is how poorly they played and so forth.

I get that the team hasn't met expectations for the last several years, but it seems like a bit of overkill. Are the fans and media over there just a negative lot?

Fans and media are waiting for way too long now. Thats all there is. It is England, the mother of football, the mother of EPL (arguably the best league in the world) etc. etc. A draw against Ukraine is not what people expect after years and years of disappointments.

The luck is that in any other group at least one team would be on 19 points and England would be fighting it out for a playoff spot. I don't buy into the hype of England must be great at football just because... But playing badly doesn't normally reward you with top spot in the group unless everyone else struggles too, making it a close groups with teams of similar ability it would seem.

      In a word, yes

They haven't accepted that they long ago became a team that firmly belongs in the second tier of European teams (Croatia, Sweden, Turkey, Serbia etc) and because of this their expectation levels are still at that of those in the first tier (France, Spain, Germany, Holland, Italy)

Because of this nothing is ever good enough. The problem is simply that they cannot keep possession. This has been the problem for 25 years and still nothing has been done about it.
But the media will still expect they win every game and reach the last 4 of every tournament

because we played poorly, because we have less and less individually brilliant players yet continue to play poorly as a unit, because Hodgson's style of football is horrible to watch and because as soon as we come up against a decent team we'll get battered!

I just dislike England's playing style, we didn't play well at all really and were quite lucky not to concede goals and even 2 close penalty claims.

Roy doesn't have a clue if you ask me. Terrible manager.

I almost don't want us to get into the world cup so he gets sacked and we can start from fresh with youngsters.

She won't be happy if Walcott is injured. I told her that I didn't recommend transfers before midweek games were finished but it was probably OK since all three transfers out were not playing.

Good result for England. Well played and captain's job from Stevie G. Get things into perspective, we've not qualified yet but have got past the biggest obstacle. Come July and there's every chance of a quarter-final game.

It's no wonder that the England manager's job is so hard when he gets berated for getting results.

Good result, just painfully dull again. The premier league's been a damp squib so far and after 7 seasons I'm starting to lose interest in my FPL team (the joy of 5 at the back being touted as a pleasant way of enjoying jeff & the boys, seriously!!). RVP scores a hat-trick v Palace, Liverpool stay top & England qualify dramatically in October & I may forgive. Football... you're on your last warning son!!

My thoughts on the game - England had almost zero real attacking threat, and got the draw that Roy came there for.

Rickie Lambert held the ball up well but had no real threat all game, though a lot of that is due to his lack of support I guess.

If we can bring in Sturridge and Rooney then we'll suddenly have a good attacking threat again, hopefully.

I'd like to see the following:

    Gerrard, X
    Walcott, Rooney, Y
    Sturridge

Where X is Wilshere, Cleverley, Carrick, or even any CM in decent form at the time (eg Barkley, Henderson)
And Y is a winger in decent form, ie one of Welbeck, Young, Zaha, Townsend, Sterling, Redmond

Also, Walker was dire today, and Johnson is unlikely to be back by mid October it seems.
Call up for Clyne? Or throw in Jones or Smalling?
Personally I'd like to see Jones if he's fit, and Clyne doesnt get a chance, Jones is certainly Roy's sort of player

    Anyone agree/disagree?

I was very disappointed with Walker, sure he coped with Moldova, but against a decent winger like Konoplianka he really struggled.
I think it's shown by the fact that Yarmolenko and Konoplianka are pretty similar standard, yet Cole kept his opposite winger under control whereas Walker didn't

Jones isn't brilliant, but he is at least pretty defensively solid

Pain is the body's way of telling you to ease off and let the body repair itself. You can play through it in the short term by blocking the pain but run the risk of aggravating the injury - rest and recuperation is still required.

Everyone is panicking, we all panic too easily on here.

Sturridge will very probably play, because Liverpool really need him
Silva is probably pretty much fit, but is a rotation risk, as we all knew when we bought him
Walcott is really needed by Arsenal with Pod and Ox out, so if he is fit he'll play - simple

He's reached that level where one can't be quite sure whether he'll drop or not. His NTI is only a very small negative number, so chances are he won't, but the question is whether the price change sites have the thresholds exactly right yet.
