Tottenham added to their defensive ranks last Friday afternoon with the purchase of Vlad Chiriches from Steaua Bucharest. A long-term target of Andre Villas-Boas, the 23-year-old arrives at the Lane for a fee reported to be in the region of £8.5m and will bolster the Spurs backline after both Steven Caulker and William Gallas departed over the summer.

A highly-rated centre-back, Chiriches has been previously linked with both Barcelona and Milan – as his new manager points out, though, it’s not only his technical qualities that have persuaded Tottenham to splash the cash on the Romanian:

“He is an interesting player that has been followed by lots of teams. He has tremendous qualities coming out with the ball and that’s what we like in our defenders. He is a great leader.”

The History

Having spent a year with Benfica’s youth system in 2007, Chiriches’ senior career kicked off the following season with Romanian lower-league side International Curtea de Arges after injury forced him to return to his native country. After a couple of campaigns, in which he helped his side gain promotion to the top-flight and produced a single goal in 41 appearances, the centre-half moved to Pandurii Târgu Jiu.

Chiriches featured 39 times over a season-and-a-half in his new surrounds before making his way to Steaua Bucharest in the summer of 2011. His time in the Romanian capital proved successful – with 42 league games under his belt, he helped Steaua register a league and cup double last time round.

The Prospects

With Jan Vertonghen pretty much nailed-on for one of the centre-half positions, Chiriches is set to vie with Michael Dawson and Younes Kaboul for the remaining spot in the heart of the Tottenham back-four. The latter is working his way back towards full fitness after long-term injuries and looks likely to be eased into contention – having started Villas-Boas’ first game in charge of the north London club in 2012/13, the Frenchman hasn’t featured in the league since due to knee and thigh complaints and clearly won’t be rushed back.

Dawson was on the verge of being sold at the start of last term and although he subsequently convinced his manager he deserved a regular role, it remains to be seen where he stands in the pecking order now. Chiriches’ arrival, allied with Kaboul’s recuperation, surely places question marks over his future game time. The former Forest man has been criticised for his lack of mobility at the back – hardly ideal for Villas-Boas’ penchant for playing a high defensive line and not the most conducive to clean sheet potential from a Fantasy perspective either.

Chiriches, on the other hand, is a far more agile option and in many ways possesses the same defensive qualities as Vertonghen. Back in his homeland, the 23-year-old has often been compared to Steaua’s legendary centre-half Miodrag Belodedici, who has summed up what Tottenham’s new boy will bring to the English top-flight:

“Chiriches is strong, fast and intelligent. He can definitely go very far. There are few footballers who can do what he does in his position, and he is ready to take risks going forward. In my era, coaches wouldn’t let me touch the ball so many times.”

It remains uncertain whether the new boy will be handed an immediate start, though. Looking back to last season, Villas-Boas initially kept faith with Brad Friedel and introduced Hugo Lloris to the first XI via European competition before the latter’s form and suitability to Tottenham’s tactics made his role at the back a formality – the same situation could unfold, allowing Dawson a temporary stay of execution.

Up next, Spurs have a favourable run of fixtures that look set to offer Fantasy managers plenty chances for points at both ends of the pitch. Home games against Norwich, West Ham, Hull and Newcastle, in addition to trips to Cardiff and Villa in the next eight Gameweeks, is one of the kindest runs around; certainly, Chiriches looks one to consider should he be swiftly introduced to first-team proceedings.

Coming in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 6.3 in the Sky Sports game and 3.0 in the Sun Dream Team, the Romanian is slightly more expensive than both Dawson and Kaboul in FPL but is significantly cheaper than the 7.0 priced Vertonghen and could offer us a relatively cheap route into a backline that has conceded just a single goal thus far.

        Not bad either tho....
I'm on a WC and have every player that rose this week except 2 fwds.
Those that rise again I'll make some money on when taking them out and those that I keep I got cheaper and saved about 1m.

Can all those on a wildcard with Wisdom transfer him out... He's close to a drop and you'll be able to buy him back at 4.3m!!

Hey all, I would be very grateful for some advice. I had to WC due to a really bad opening squad selection, and would be grateful for any thoughts/suggestions about the squad I have picked. I am quite new to FPL, and as such, any advice would be very much appreciated, as my friends are kicking my ass right now.

    Mignolet Davis
    Mertesacker, Ivanovich, Zabaleta, Dawson, Chester
    Walcott, Coutinho, Kim-Bo-Kyung, Barkley, Moses
    Benteke, Giroud, Soldado

Alternative routes I was thinking of going was to choose RVP with his upcoming fixtures, but I don't know whether it would be advisable to downgrade forwards, mf, or def if choose to do so.

Thanks again in advance for any advice.

    szez boruc
    chambers koscielny lescott ivan colman
    barkley lampard lamela hernandez yaya
    giroud benteke sturridge

then realised RVP is actually a differential in my leagues, so i was thinking this:

    szcz boruc
lescott ivan coleman wisdom (johnson injury) chambers
    barkley brady lampard hernandez yaya
    RVP sturridge giroud

Vertongen seems to be carrying less attacking threat than last season, Walker would save you some cash
Coleman looks too good to ignore imo
Silva has a thigh injury and Walcott limped off tonight so keep an eye on them
      Sturridge also injured.
If all injured players recover then 7.5/10 (losing points for Verm, no coleman and no United players for CPL at home)
If they don't recover then 5/10

I've got him in my WC team, not convinced by RVP's price tag at all.

Think Welbeck will prove good value, even if he doesn't score as much as RVP.

Can see Welbeck getting 10-15 goals this season.

Walcotto alone is a good pick.
Giroud alone is a good pick.
Both together they are still good picks, except there is the added risk of Arsenal blanking which guarantees you fail.

Just checking the sacrifices I'd have to make to my team to get RvP in. It doesn't seem to look too bad when comparing it directly.

    A) Ivanovic, Coutinho, Benteke/Soldado
    B) Collins, Hernandez, RvP

Still pretty sure I'm going with option A though. Too many transfers required to redistribute funds after the inevitable RvP sale.

    Wildcard:

    Mignolet and Boruc

    Zabaletta, Terry, Vidic, Shaw, Luna

Yaya Toure, Lampard, Ozil, Lucas, Livermore

    Aguero, Soldado, Bent

    Any thoughts?

      not a fan

midfield is too weak - lucas and livermore won't get you much and yaya won't score FK's every week

if you like Ozil, stick with him but I think walcott is a better option (and cheaper too)

not to sure about aguero and bent. personally I'd prefer to swap those out for two of giroud sturridge and benteke

Don't like Zab, Luna, Toure, Ozil, Lucas, Livermore or Bent. Too much in defence an odd MF. Attack is ok, but only because I think Aguero will come good soon. That doesn't mean he isn't a rotation risk though. Also not keen on the rotating GK option, but that's personal preference.

Mig, Terry, Vidic, Shaw (somewhat) Lamp, Aguero (ok as a punt) and Soldado are good picks imo.

What formation are you intending on playing?

I can't understand anyone who uses their WC this week and ends up with a team without RVP. I can understand people who started without him for their tough early fixtures (although 2 goals in 3 was not a bad return) but now with his run of fixtures, he should be in your team surely?

I must admit being without the current best striker in the EPL scares me witless but I'm not convinced about Man U and their run of good fixtures coincides with other top team's good fixtures too. If that wasn't the case, I'd have him.

It really depends on wether you're happy to go with 3 cheap mids, or you want an additional big hitter

I think almost every RVP owner has 2 of the other big 4 strikers, so saying Benteke being better value is not a reason imo

based on them being poor. Brady plays for hull who won't score many goals. I wouldn't rely on him at all to get you more than 2. Sure 2 goals at start of the season, 1 was a pen the other v lower opposition in the cup.

Whittingham will get you a steady amount of 2's and JWP will fade into non existence come October

Look around. only 2 big hitting mids that look like scoring atm, and i have them. Silva, Hazard, Cazorla,Coutinho have been just as good as the my 3 cheapies.

Obviously thats not gonna conitnue but i'd rather wait and see who the big mid is this year than have a 9m flop in my team

In the end, things will even out. Mids will start scoring (allowing for rotation) as will strikers and defs will concede.

It's the rotation part of the equation and its affect on points scored that interests me.
