Tottenham added to their defensive ranks last Friday afternoon with the purchase of Vlad Chiriches from Steaua Bucharest. A long-term target of Andre Villas-Boas, the 23-year-old arrives at the Lane for a fee reported to be in the region of £8.5m and will bolster the Spurs backline after both Steven Caulker and William Gallas departed over the summer.

A highly-rated centre-back, Chiriches has been previously linked with both Barcelona and Milan – as his new manager points out, though, it’s not only his technical qualities that have persuaded Tottenham to splash the cash on the Romanian:

“He is an interesting player that has been followed by lots of teams. He has tremendous qualities coming out with the ball and that’s what we like in our defenders. He is a great leader.”

The History

Having spent a year with Benfica’s youth system in 2007, Chiriches’ senior career kicked off the following season with Romanian lower-league side International Curtea de Arges after injury forced him to return to his native country. After a couple of campaigns, in which he helped his side gain promotion to the top-flight and produced a single goal in 41 appearances, the centre-half moved to Pandurii Târgu Jiu.

Chiriches featured 39 times over a season-and-a-half in his new surrounds before making his way to Steaua Bucharest in the summer of 2011. His time in the Romanian capital proved successful – with 42 league games under his belt, he helped Steaua register a league and cup double last time round.

The Prospects

With Jan Vertonghen pretty much nailed-on for one of the centre-half positions, Chiriches is set to vie with Michael Dawson and Younes Kaboul for the remaining spot in the heart of the Tottenham back-four. The latter is working his way back towards full fitness after long-term injuries and looks likely to be eased into contention – having started Villas-Boas’ first game in charge of the north London club in 2012/13, the Frenchman hasn’t featured in the league since due to knee and thigh complaints and clearly won’t be rushed back.

Dawson was on the verge of being sold at the start of last term and although he subsequently convinced his manager he deserved a regular role, it remains to be seen where he stands in the pecking order now. Chiriches’ arrival, allied with Kaboul’s recuperation, surely places question marks over his future game time. The former Forest man has been criticised for his lack of mobility at the back – hardly ideal for Villas-Boas’ penchant for playing a high defensive line and not the most conducive to clean sheet potential from a Fantasy perspective either.

Chiriches, on the other hand, is a far more agile option and in many ways possesses the same defensive qualities as Vertonghen. Back in his homeland, the 23-year-old has often been compared to Steaua’s legendary centre-half Miodrag Belodedici, who has summed up what Tottenham’s new boy will bring to the English top-flight:

“Chiriches is strong, fast and intelligent. He can definitely go very far. There are few footballers who can do what he does in his position, and he is ready to take risks going forward. In my era, coaches wouldn’t let me touch the ball so many times.”

It remains uncertain whether the new boy will be handed an immediate start, though. Looking back to last season, Villas-Boas initially kept faith with Brad Friedel and introduced Hugo Lloris to the first XI via European competition before the latter’s form and suitability to Tottenham’s tactics made his role at the back a formality – the same situation could unfold, allowing Dawson a temporary stay of execution.

Up next, Spurs have a favourable run of fixtures that look set to offer Fantasy managers plenty chances for points at both ends of the pitch. Home games against Norwich, West Ham, Hull and Newcastle, in addition to trips to Cardiff and Villa in the next eight Gameweeks, is one of the kindest runs around; certainly, Chiriches looks one to consider should he be swiftly introduced to first-team proceedings.

Coming in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 6.3 in the Sky Sports game and 3.0 in the Sun Dream Team, the Romanian is slightly more expensive than both Dawson and Kaboul in FPL but is significantly cheaper than the 7.0 priced Vertonghen and could offer us a relatively cheap route into a backline that has conceded just a single goal thus far.

Yeah interesting stuff did read your defence of cheap mids and do agree it's not an automatic no.

Was the bonus change a significant factor in your decision to WC early or was it more fixing your squad/getting RVP in/something else?

Just trying to get some perspective so I respond proportionately to the bonus change.

In previous years it was a given to get big hitters in midfield and so maybe my response is a slight knee jerk to the poor returns for Mirralas, Coutinho etc and the BAPS for defenders. Probably wrong but time will tell. My wildcard was due to needing to make changes and wanting RVP but not sure who for. Still think leaving till March is the best option but thought i would try this for a change to get some value

Cheers. Saved a transfer so holding off wc, if I need to use it in the gw8 international break when I've had a chance to assess the new signings I might.

Long term mulling over a Walcott Ozil Nolan Brady JWP midfield with RVP up top and cut price premium coverage at the back (think Nasty, Toure/Wisdom, Ferdinand).

            Lots more thinking of course...

Who's bringing in RVP after his brace for the Netherlands?

    Pros:
    - In form (three goals in the last two internationals)
    - Home to Palace
    - Huge ownership means you fall back quite a bit if he hits it off

    Cons:
    - 14 mil (someone pointed out that RVP + Brady cost the same as Sturridge + Ozil)

Only way to get that midfield is to have him. Can't afford Vida.

Think he's guaranteed to play against Palace as he isn't involved in internationals. Hardly likely to come on as a sub at all, and Chester/Clyne are decent enough replacements.

Remember Pokemon cards? I don't know about you, but when I was at school everyone was desperate for Charizard and would trade anything to get him; even half their decks! One time I traded 80% of my deck for Charizard, enjoyed having him for a bit, then got bored because my deck was really weak and I traded someone else's deck for him, leaving me pretty much where I was before.

    Seems kinda like RVP...

Do you not think defenders have more value this year though? With Mourinho back, he keeps Chelsea ridiculously solid at the back which means a lot of clan sheets and BPS for Terry. Vidic is also one for clean sheets, especially with the arrival of Fellaini. I think the defence will be good value for money this year, unlike the midfield, which is why I have stocked up on it.

You need to decide on getting in RVP or not vets is right. Yes you will sacrifice something else somewhere, you can't avoid it. All you can say is without RVP better overall structure but it has not RVP in it.

To murder one of Aesop's fables, "a point in the hand is worth three in the bush " (no laughing at the back there).

Although I've been pretty sure RVP offers questionable value, the truth remains I feel as the focal point of the United attack he represents points in the hand against Palace and other fixtures to come. Maybe I should just take that, double it, and run.

Liking the reference!. On RVP, all things being equal he is not worth £14m. But for the next six weeks, with double points for 4-5, of them, then i reckon he is.

It is compelling, Isacki, especially in the light of your chat with Mr McG above but I feel this season is different from previous. Even if you ignore Chelsea & City due to rotation, there are still great other attacking options out there from the other top teams. Ally this to Arse, Liv, Totty and Swans (soon) also having great fixtures and some inform or interesting new players and I feel the RVP question is a bit trickier.

Yeah you can see I've encountered that problem because I'd have to sell Soldado which could potentially be an epically stupid decision.

And the alternatives which are even harder budget-wise are to sell Sturridge or Benteke, ditto.

So I guess it comes down to my skill at choosing captains.

Which involves a lot of luck 😆

Luck? Yup... we all need loads of that 🙂

If, and it is a BIG if, Suarez gets his head in the right place. I see him as a bargain at 11.0. Of course, RVP is easily downgradable whereby my current plan is to bring in a certain 7.4m mid and sell Soldado, but I'm meandering.

When it comes down to it, I fully expect RVP to score 2+ this w/e but I don't see Man U as being effective this year and RVP will suffer because of that.

          I hope I'm lucky 😉

There is hope actually. You can improve your luck by asking Granny what transfers he's doing this week.

Do you think Sturridge's points will be affected by Suarez or vice versa? I followed this last season and to my surprise I couldn't see anything conclusive.

              I agree about Granny... he's a bad penny 😉

Suarez/Studge is a bit like RVP/Roon or ???/Kun to me. Suarez will help Studge's points if Studge keeps the main striker role. Obviously, Suarez is by far the better player and will outscore Studge easily over the season.

I have been known to be wrong though 😉

Putting to one side this literary homicide, did you know that the saying is literally true. In the context of FPL, the players that you have tend to be worth more than similar players that you don't. You value them more because you have them. Ask someone what RVP is worth and the owner will say 15m while the non-owner will say 13m.

I can't disagree with that haha. I actually asked "How much do you think RVP is worth" and a sneaky check of teams did reveal that. However you could always say they got him because they effectively believed he was worth it in the first place, instead of rationalizing after their decision. I've seen too much of the latter though.

It's a fair criticism and perhaps not the best example. Better to ask someone both before and after buying or selling him. With a good control, the value will usually change.

Harder to measure but you could see something if you had the time. Would be interesting but I expect there would be a period of metamorphosis. Most would recognise a complete change of opinion makes them look inconsistent or just plain wrong. Will cover it up with a veil of plausibility so that their change of mind is justified.

About as good as it gets with RvP in there.

I'd take another look at the defence. Chambers not nailed on with Clyne looming. Sakho is also unsure of gametime in the very short term.

Lucas is a poor player for FPL, take a look at JWP instead. Also wouldn't advise having 2 x 4.5 mids.

    Walcott Lamela Michu Brady JWP

    Only other thoughts are:
