Robin Van Persie scores twice as Holland ease past Andorra. Shinji Kagawa reveals his frustration at a lack of game time for United, Roberto Soldado is amongst the goals for Spain, Theo Walcott limps off with a knock for England, while Eden Hazard looks on course to recover from an Achilles problem in time for Chelsea’s trip to Everton:

Van Persie Bags a Brace

After failing to score in each of his last couple of league encounters, Robin Van Persie’s Fantasy owners will be eagerly anticipating this weekend after he grabbed both Holland’s goals against Andorra to take his tally to three over the international break.

The Scout Says: Despite a home encounter with Palace this Saturday, Van Persie has been slow to attract new owners after a pair of frustrating displays against Chelsea and Liverpool, where he failed to register a single shot on target. With his eye for goal restored once again, there’s no doubt he’ll be heading into Saturday’s deadline as the most-captained option across the Fantasy games, with a huge majority of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players handing him the armband against an Eagles side yet to keep out their opponents this term. Although Wayne Rooney is hopeful of a return for the Gameweek 5 Manchester derby, he is set to miss out against Ian Holloway’s side, making the Dutchman’s contribution all the more crucial for the under-fire David Moyes this weekend. With home games against West Brom, Southampton and Stoke, allied with a trip to out-of-sorts Sunderland in the next six, Van Persie could barely be handed a kinder set of fixtures as he returns to the domestic stage with confidence renewed.

Kagawa Admits Moyes Frustration

Shinji Kagawa continued to impress on the international stage yesterday by grabbing a goal in Japan’s 3-1 win over Ghana. The United midfielder lasted 85 minutes before making way and, having provided an assist in a win over Guatemala on Friday, has earned praise for his recent performances, despite a lack of domestic action this term. After the game, however, it was Kagawa’s comments to the press on his limited game time under United’s new manager that hogged the headlines:

“Please ask David Moyes why I’m not in the side. It is frustrating not playing but to score a goal like that gives me confidence. Hopefully I can take that back to my club with me and things will improve. It’s hard not playing regularly. Some days the frustration is worse than others; it comes in waves. So it’s nice to come back to Japan and get to play, and to score felt good. I just have to keep working hard and keep pushing for my chance. When I get back it will be a challenge to get into the team. When I get back to my club I have to wait for my chance in the Champions League and the Premier League. I’m sure my chance will come.”

The Scout Says: Bearing in mind Kagawa has a long-haul flight back from Japan and United’s weekend match with Palace is Saturday’s early lunchtime kick-off, there’d be no real surprise if Moyes once again left him out of his line-up, with jet-lag playing a part this time. Yet to play a single minute in the league, the Japan star was omitted from the squad altogether for the Gameweek 3 trip to Liverpool – all the more baffling when his manager has complained of a lack of creativity amongst his charges. With United then facing three crucial games against Bayer Leverkusen, City and Liverpool across a trip of different competitions, it’s perhaps questionable whether Moyes will be prepared to take a risk and hand Kagawa the opportunity as he looks to return to winning ways after a patchy start to his time in charge at Old Trafford.

Soldado in the Goals for Spain

Tottenham’s Roberto Soldado warmed up for a favourable run of fixtures by notching for Spain in last night’s 2-2 draw with Chile. The forward was given a 66-minute run-out before being replaced by City’s Alvaro Negredo, while another Etihad new boy, Jesus Navas, grabbed a late equaliser after climbing off the bench at the break.

The Scout Says: Yet to score from open play in the league this term, the former Valencia man has, nonetheless, grabbed four goals in four starts for Spurs since arriving at the Lane this summer. Despite a disappointing blank in the north London derby, Soldado still looks firmly on form and with new boys Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela poised to be handed their first starts at home to Norwich on Saturday, the Spain forward could be set to pick apart the Canaries as he looks ahead to a schedule that also includes home games against West Ham and Hull and trips to Cardiff and Villa in the next six.

Mixed News for Wenger

Fantasy managers will be eagerly awaiting news from the Emirates after a couple of midfielders were subbed off for their national sides last night. Theo Walcott and Tomas Rosicky both picked up knocks but while Rosicky looks to have sustained a thigh problem, Walcott’s withdrawal seemed no more than precautionary ahead of the weekend’s trip to Sunderland, with journalists suggesting he ”is okay”. Elsewhere, German pair Per Mertesacker and Mesut Ozil grabbed a goal apiece in an easy win over the Faroe Islands, while Laurent Koscielny also reminded us of his attacking potential by supplying an assist in France’s away win over Belarus.

The Scout Says: The arrival of Ozil clearly nudges Rosicky down the pecking order making the Czech midfielder’s absence less of an issue, while Walcott’s owners will be optimistic by the fact he played on for several minutes following a hefty challenge. Arsenal’s trip to Wearside this weekend is the start of a run which pits them against only two of last term’s top six in the upcoming 11 Gameweeks – Walcott looks set to rack up the points over that run, though any absence could see more managers turn to Ozil as a Gunners midfield alternative

Midfield Worries Ease for Mourinho

According to reports in The Mail, Eden Hazard is in the frame for Chelsea’s trip to Goodison on Saturday evening. The winger limped out of training for Belgium with an Achilles problem last week and failed to play any part in the win over Scotland but has responded positively to treatment, with a national team doctor suggesting there is “no reason” why he won’t be back in full training for the Blues.

The Scout Says: With Jose Mourinho slow to hand Juan Mata game time this term, Hazard’s security of starts has persuaded 23.7% of FPL managers to snap up his services; the most popular midfielder in the game, despite a recent price drop down to 9.3. With Fulham, Norwich and Cardiff in three of the four fixtures directly after the Goodison encounter, many will be eyeing up Chelsea’s options, with Oscar also back on the radar after recovering from an ankle knock to feature as a sub for Brazil in last night’s win over Portugal.

Marshall Worry for Cardiff

Cardiff boss Malky Mackay is awaiting prognosis on keeper David Marshall after the Bluebirds number one was forced off with a hip problem during Scotland’s win in Macedonia last night.

The Scout Says: An ever-present for the Welsh outfit last term, Marshall registered his first clean sheet of the season against Everton last weekend and with a schedule that pits him against Hull, Fulham and Newcastle in the next four, could be poised for further returns. Any length of absence may see Joe Lewis handed a chance to deputise – the latter, at 4.0 in FPL, would be the cheapest playing keeper in the game, though centre-half Ben Turner is similarly priced and has played every minute under Mackay so far.

O’Shea Ankle Concern for Black Cats

Sunderland are awaiting news on the ankle injury sustained by John O’Shea in the Republic of Ireland’s loss to Austria last night. The defender was subbed off just four minutes into the second period with the problem as his nation’s prospects of reaching next year’s World Cup all but ended in Vienna.

The Scout Says: The Black Cats skipper is, of course, suspended for this week’s clash with Arsenal but a possible lengthy absence will be a real concern to Paolo Di Canio. Having been publicly critical of O’Shea’s display against Palace in the previous Gameweek, Di Canio has since apologised and patched things up ahead of a schedule which also sees the Wearsiders face Liverpool, United and Swansea in the next five. With Wes Brown still sidelined by a knee problem, Di Canio is likely to turn to Modibo Diakite and Valentin Roberge at centre-half but with such a tough run of games, Fantasy faith in the Black Cats will be minimal at best

So the International break has left me with Silva and Marshall possibly injured (not playing).

The whole new BP system has my "old school" team in tatters right now - budget players across the back 6. Budget mids Kasami and Cabral, not nailed on.

132 points in 3 gameweeks - playing in a league for 100 quid, lying 6 out of 9 - 40 odd points off the lead 🙁

I have seen the wildcard button so many times - just haven't clicked the damn thing!!!!

My car needs a service, my goldfish died and my girlfriend is busting my balls over something trivial...

Any advice (decent) will be mostly appreciated.

        Marshall (Kelvin D)
Whittaker - Turner - Chester - Chambers (Ramage)
        Silva - Walcott - Yaya - Cabral - Kasami
        RVP - Tekkers - Soldado

I have my priorities right though, FPL team first, new Goldfish then the GF saga.

2.3m in the bank - no free transfer.

I decided to swop out a 4.0 defender that was not playing upgraded to Whittaker.

I guess the key question here is if more goals are going to be scored or the trend of clean sheets will continue. In which case, CB's are more valuable as well as attacking Backs.

He is their first choice left back. Benoit Assou-Ekotto got loaned to QPR. However, Spurs do have many centre backs, so on occasion Vertongen might play left back. Rose is a midfielder anyway in FPL.

Despite what folks have said, I expect Ozil to score a fair share of goals. The argument that he had such great players around him that he could get assists easily can be applied to goal scoring, he would often pass instead of going himself because he would have felt more pressure from those guys to pass the ball. Penalties too, good peno taker and can take a nice free kick but Ronaldo was always going to be on them.

      Agreed.

People have labelled him as someone who will be assisting the assister in an attempt to justify not getting him in.

No one has labeled him as assisting the assister. People think he will get plenty of assists but prefer the goalscorers (theo, giroud) because assisters are not as likely to get bonus. If özil turns out to be a goalscorer as well he will be in every team

Agree. He is a great free kick taker, and should have been taking them ahead of Ronaldo. (1 in 1000) Being on pens would be a bonus. Also playing centrally means he is essentially the 2nd striker at Arsenal.

Sunderland are a shambles, so Giroud is equally good shout (I just don't own him). Would still probably go Walcott over him anyway though, just because of midfielders goals worth the extra so more upside.

Heads up for those thinking of captaining arsenal players. It's worth notting that we have failed to just score against Sunderland in 5 of our last 10 encounters.

Our away game record with Sunderland is... Win, Loss, Win, Draw, Loss, Draw, Win, Win, Win, Win, Draw, Loss, Draw, Win, Loss, Draw, Draw, Draw, Loss, Draw (All leagues back into the 1980's)
      20 Away Games...
      7 Wins
      5 Losses
      8 Draws

Sunderland Lost their last Home game.
Arsenal Won their last Away game.

As in, him being worth the premium as he helps with the captaincy dilemma most weeks, and is the most reliable.

Asking whether this is overrated as there will be alot of weeks, where your captain does better than RVP. And the points you lose by not captaining him can be made up, from the other players in your team being better and outscoring the ones in RVP teams

I think the point is; while others are capable of a big score 'on their day', its knowing WHICH day is their day that makes the difference.

At 14m you should be able to bank on returns coming rather than gamble.

But i agree, the argument is given too much weight. There are other genuine captains available.

Hmm. He has been the best player in the league over the past two seasons and every couple of months people have made up solutions to overcoming the deficit of not owning him.. more or less every time Van Persie has come out well and produced the points for those who select him.
Obviously, you can score better than an RVP team if you get your selections right, and captain the right player most weeks.. but I've opted to throw the captaincy on RVP and spend my time working on the squad around him, allowing transfers to get in defenders for their good fixtures, and alternate the cheap midfielders.
I think you should just choose one path or the other and try to make it work as best you can for 5/6 weeks, then reassess your options in relation to fixtures

I think so, but you know it won't go to bed.

I spent some time on a comparison of Sturridge, Benteke and RVP since Jan 1st and Benteke was significantly stronger than RVP, while Sturridge fell marginally short of his attacking returns having played far less minutes. As an argument for RVP, the captaincy thing is a little overrated.

Data included for people to draw their own conclusions: IT IS A LONG READ!

      BOTTOM LINE:
Anyone rotating captaincy between Benteke and Sturridge, would have scored more than an RVP only captaincy - even if they picked the WRONG captain every week (bar DGWs) SINCE JAN 1st!

      yes. both ways.

the rvp debate as a whole is very stale now as everyone has a side, there are no neutrals, he's the most over-poweringly priced player in the game and you either have him or you don't. it's like a political debate now, propoganda from either side as people try to justify to themselves as much as caring about selling an idea to others. selective stats to prove one point, other stats selected to prove the counter*

*there have been some very good balanced debates still, very much including from yourself demi. i'm just tired of the whole thing. am waiting for the january WC for some proper debate, and even then it will be seletive memories and stats again

Yeah true. Hard to be neutral about it, but it's not a bad thing. Sometimes you can make arguments, and it would convince other people to think differently. End of the day, you have to go one way or another so probably best to wait till Jan to get a better picture of what the best way was. No right or wrong now, because there will be more bias

what would you consider neutral, relevant statistical evidence for comparison?

For what it is worth, I am neutral. I had him in my GW1 side and am on my WC - I tried to find an unbiased, relevant set of data to make my decision on whether i go forwards with or without RVP. Of course, no-one is going to project the future with analysis of the past, but we can put research into a strategy. Without any consideration for evidence, we are taking a punt.

He is the biggest decision for an FPL manager to make - hence it being talked to death...

...and i agree, it's a conversation that has run it's course for now. For me, the Derby will be far more telling.

almost impossible to find one. you get the extremes at either end. even your very good analysis was whether by design or not an analysis of rvp during him 2013 slump (for his standards).
it's very much a personal thing, i've tried to read lots on here as i'm very 50-50 on it still now CHE and liv have gone, but the propoganda at either end is doing my head in now. i'll give an example, yankeedoodleandy's comment a few posts above, where 2 gameweeks trumps 2 and a half years.

haha, those comments are to be taken with a pinch of salt, i'm sure.

I didn't pick a period to highlight a slump, I just picked the date as an indicator of form. It was just over half a season's worth of games and seemed like an easy starting point. I know he's not performed in 2013 as he had in 2012, but we are in 2013 so i figure thats a truer reflection of his form for this season. One could argue that Benteke hadn't bedded in, in the earlier fixtures and Sturridge wasn't a feature until fit at Liverpool. Too many variables to draw any final conclusions from so i just plumped for a nice starting point: 01/01/13 for an indicator and tried to limit the variables.

I'm 50-50 on it too. I have built two teams on paper, very similar. One is an RVP team, one is a Sturridge team. I'll listen to the press conferences, make a decision and go with it.

but the sole captaincy thing, im 85% against.

If i do go RVP, he won't have that responsibility, just a strong option that wont make me overlook other players.

exactly, and again to go back to the 'extreme voices' some genuinely seem to be making out that those with rvp will be captaining him every single week which is just silly.

the captaincy debates are actually the best ones i feel as without a captain feature in fpl i doubt hardly anyone would pay the 14.0, whilst those with are often using the captaincy as a deal-breaker. although i guess fpl may not have made him 14.0 without captains in their game.
about the 14.0 price, i think fpl made an error making him more than 13.0 or 13.5. in the 2nd half of last season rvp showed a vulnerability which he hadn't shown since returining from his last proper injury (january 2011). for FPL to therefore hike his price so much despite this vulnerability was imo a mistake. i reckon they got carried away by his total score for the season and thought that's 2 huge years in a row now, no fluke, let's slap the big one on him, the ronaldo, the 14mil. even though anyone who watched man utd last season will have seen a finishing slump a couple of months into 2013*, a slump which hit hardest in the champions league as the league was pretty much already sown up thanks largely to RVP's heroics in 2012, which followed on following on from his last 18 months at arsenal where he arguably was very much a 14mil player (if anyone can ever be) yet FPL hadn't made him more than 13.

*maybe the slump was fatigue and a loss of urgency after man utd sewed up the league so early. although the latter doesn't account for missing key chances in both madrid legs.
