While the club-record signing of Stephane Sessegnon made most of the West Brom headlines on deadline day, Steve Clarke’s acquisition of Morgan Amalfitano from Marseille may prove a canny piece of business. Arriving at the Hawthorns on a one-year loan deal with a view to a permanent move, the 28-year-old will bring a much-needed creativity to a Baggies side without a goal to their name in the league this season.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Clarke was quick to praise the new arrival and indicated Amalfitano’s versatility could be key for the campaign ahead:

“I’m delighted to welcome Morgan to the club. He is predominantly a right-sided midfielder who can also operate in a number of other midfield and attacking positions. Morgan is a technical player with good quality on the ball. He also has fantastic work-rate and we believe his game is well suited to the Barclays Premier League. Morgan’s arrival will increase competition in midfield and add more quality and depth to the squad.”

The History

A product of the Cannes youth system, Amalfitano’s senior career kicked off back in 2003/04 with French outfit Sedan. Over the course of four seasons, he turned out 126 times and picked up a pair of assists for the strugglers before he was acquired by Ligue 1 side FC Lorient ahead of the 2008/09 campaign.

The midfielder’s first couple of years in his new surrounds harvested nine goals and eight assists over 72 top-flight appearances before Amalfitano improved markedly, with five goals and 16 assists delivered in 2010/11. Signing for Marseille under freedom of contract in July 2011, he failed to replicate his final year at Lorient and managed just two goals and seven assists from 60 league games before making his way to the midlands. Amalfitano has also turned out once for the French national side, providing an assist in a 2-1 win over Germany in February last year.

The Prospects

With the Baggies still failing to adjust to life without Romelu Lukaku, Clarke is yet to settle on a familiar XI or formation so far. The West Brom boss has already handed six midfielders and five forwards game time in the opening three fixtures and switched from a 4-4-2 formation to 4-3-3 as he attempts to find a suitable system without the big Belgian to bang in the goals.

Certainly, Sessegnon’s arrival suggests a move back to the 4-2-3-1 of last season could be on the cards, with the Benin international tucked in behind a lone forward. While such a scenario would indicate Amalfitano is more likely to be handed a berth on the Baggies right, it remains to be seen just how often he can expect starts, bearing in mind the likes of James Morrison and Graham Dorrans also offer options in his preferred position.

Coming in at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.4 in the Sky Sports game, the Frenchman is certainly cheaper than the majority of his midfield team-mates and looks one to monitor, should Clarke decide to lessen his rotation and attempt to nail down a settled side. With games against United, Arsenal and Liverpool, in addition to a trip to Stoke in the following six, though, few will be willing to take a punt on West Brom options right now, with the upcoming schedule affording Clarke’s side little opportunity to turn around their poor start to the season.

Doesn't look worth full price at the moment sadly 🙁 .. me and my buds will just play co-op with the demo for a while if we need the fifa 14 urge

Early risers and late sleepers, good morning/evening to you all.

    Would you rather (barring any significant news in the Friday pressers);

    1. Silva > Felliani (1FT) Gives Man Utd coverage for the Palace game without spending any points, big money signing who got very decent attacking returns under Moyes last season and likely to fill the 'hole' role with Rooney out

    2. Silva & Sturridge/Soldado > Brady/JWP & RVP (-4pts) Obvious potential, but means sacrificing Spurs and Liverpool coverage. Main reason I'm hesitant to drop Sturridge is that I'm going to the pub monday night to watch the game, and it's exciting when you've got a few FPL players involved!

    Team linked, suggestions/abuse welcomed

Anybody else really tempted to pick Lukaku. A lot of us picked him for the DGW even when he had a lot of competition. At Everton he doesn't have quite the same competition. Hopefully he'll play more than he did at West Brom last season. And he'll have a better team behind him to get even more goals!

    _______ - Walcott - Ben Arfa - _______ (Ward-Prowse)

I wouldn't pick Fellaini but your others have no form yet. I think Coutinho will come good though. Lamela probably too. Not fancying any of Chelseas multitude? Or Michu or someone?

    Early Bird Update

For those who have had a good start this season, this league is for you.

To qualify all you need is to have scored:

    67 in GW1
49 in GW2 with no hits or 54 with a hit. More hits equals higher score needed.
48 with no transfers in GW3 or 54 with a hit.

Code is 58-338 for those who pass these three points.
274 qualified. Plenty get knocked out each week.

      Ward-Prowse to Redmond

Walcott will perform better fantasy wise. Plus it gives you the £0.5m you need to do Ward-Prowse to Redmond

JWP has way better fixtures and is on set pieces.

Redmond was excellent against us, but JWP will outscore him this season by a country mile.

Trust me he's nailed. Hes played every every second this season, MoPo loves him as hes defensively good and has a great engine which suits his style, plus he takes every set piece bar direct free kicks where you're close enough to have a pop.

I still wouldn't say that Redmond is 100% nailed-on himself. Still quite a raw winger that'll go through tougher spells during the season. Pilkington will get his chances at some stage, I'm sure.

      Boruc (foster)
      Coleman Ivan Chester (murner ward)
      Wally tarabt coutinho miralas (kim)
      Soldado lambert dzeko....4.8m ITB

      Gw4: miralas + dzeko >> Brady + Rvp (-4)
Gw5: foster + kim >> myhill + Hernandez (-4)...as Brady/tarabt will have tough away games
Not a big fan of hits tho

      B:
Gw4 Ivan + Dzeko >> fonte + Rvp (-4)...double up on saints def?
Gw5: tarabt >> Hernandez....assuming tarabt does nothin against WBA this gw

      Victor Moses - A short-term punt

With fantasy players unconvinced by a trio of mid-priced midfielders in Hernandez, Ben Arfa, and Snodgrass, the pacy, explosive, Nigerian winger owned by Chelsea, on loan at Liverpool, suddenly crops up on the radar as a genuine alternative.

With over 1,000,000 players currently opting for RVP and uncertainty over Sturridge relating to injuries and a pending comeback by a certain carnivorous Uruguayan, attention turns to just how to benefit from Liverpool's great set of fixtures on a limited budget.

Coutinho looks set to move back into his preferred role in the center, tucked in behind Sturridge, looking to get his season up and running after a fairly bleak start. Priced at over 9.0m and with spaces for midfield premium players limited and perhaps already taken by the lively Walcott and all of a sudden there's a problem..How do I take advantage of a new-look, confident Liverpool side?

Step forward Victor Moses. A young prospect who Brendan Rodgers briefly worked with before the former opted to join Crystal Palace where he flourished through the ranks, earning a move to the Premier League with Wigan. Explosive form, home and away, earned Moses his big-money move to Chelsea. With Chelsea opting for a transfer policy this summer of buying the top-100 young, talented, creative wingers Moses was shipped out on loan to gain regular first team football.

Wanted by various clubs including his one-time employees at Selhurst Park, Rodgers lured him to Anfield instead, presumably on the very promise of regular first-team football. With everyone fit and available for selection, a first-team front line-up consisting of the below looks very feasible indeed:

      Suarez = Coutinho = Moses

      Sturridge

With no European distractions, the threat of rotation looks slim, with the likes of Aspas, Sterling, and Borini [now on loan at Sunderland] failing to prove that they deserve the starting slot ahead of Moses.

For those on a limited budget and opting for the likes of Benteke/Giroud/Soldado instead of Sturridge but still want an investment in Liverpool's good run of fixtures, you can do worse than a short-term punt on Victor Moses.

        Is Toure injured?

if he is - in order of most likely to score most points

Coleman (I know hes playing city but Everton are tough at home and offensively hes decent)
        Chester (at home to Cardiff....)
Collins (we will scosre against West Ham, Osvaldo explosion)
Toure (rubbing his groi on the sideline - still might score more than collins 🙂
