While the club-record signing of Stephane Sessegnon made most of the West Brom headlines on deadline day, Steve Clarke’s acquisition of Morgan Amalfitano from Marseille may prove a canny piece of business. Arriving at the Hawthorns on a one-year loan deal with a view to a permanent move, the 28-year-old will bring a much-needed creativity to a Baggies side without a goal to their name in the league this season.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Clarke was quick to praise the new arrival and indicated Amalfitano’s versatility could be key for the campaign ahead:

“I’m delighted to welcome Morgan to the club. He is predominantly a right-sided midfielder who can also operate in a number of other midfield and attacking positions. Morgan is a technical player with good quality on the ball. He also has fantastic work-rate and we believe his game is well suited to the Barclays Premier League. Morgan’s arrival will increase competition in midfield and add more quality and depth to the squad.”

The History

A product of the Cannes youth system, Amalfitano’s senior career kicked off back in 2003/04 with French outfit Sedan. Over the course of four seasons, he turned out 126 times and picked up a pair of assists for the strugglers before he was acquired by Ligue 1 side FC Lorient ahead of the 2008/09 campaign.

The midfielder’s first couple of years in his new surrounds harvested nine goals and eight assists over 72 top-flight appearances before Amalfitano improved markedly, with five goals and 16 assists delivered in 2010/11. Signing for Marseille under freedom of contract in July 2011, he failed to replicate his final year at Lorient and managed just two goals and seven assists from 60 league games before making his way to the midlands. Amalfitano has also turned out once for the French national side, providing an assist in a 2-1 win over Germany in February last year.

The Prospects

With the Baggies still failing to adjust to life without Romelu Lukaku, Clarke is yet to settle on a familiar XI or formation so far. The West Brom boss has already handed six midfielders and five forwards game time in the opening three fixtures and switched from a 4-4-2 formation to 4-3-3 as he attempts to find a suitable system without the big Belgian to bang in the goals.

Certainly, Sessegnon’s arrival suggests a move back to the 4-2-3-1 of last season could be on the cards, with the Benin international tucked in behind a lone forward. While such a scenario would indicate Amalfitano is more likely to be handed a berth on the Baggies right, it remains to be seen just how often he can expect starts, bearing in mind the likes of James Morrison and Graham Dorrans also offer options in his preferred position.

Coming in at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.4 in the Sky Sports game, the Frenchman is certainly cheaper than the majority of his midfield team-mates and looks one to monitor, should Clarke decide to lessen his rotation and attempt to nail down a settled side. With games against United, Arsenal and Liverpool, in addition to a trip to Stoke in the following six, though, few will be willing to take a punt on West Brom options right now, with the upcoming schedule affording Clarke’s side little opportunity to turn around their poor start to the season.

surely he's one to jump on when he shows some form than one to sign in hope? That 198 points wasnt catching anyone off guard, and hes been poor for a couple of seasons.

Yes people want Man U coverage and its RVP or welbeck at the moment. Nani has shown he can do it before and has just signed a new contract so it should only be a matter of time before he gets his chance, it's just whether it's this week or not.

Just a warning he did play 90 minutes for Portugal midweek

I would guess saturday if at all. It's unusual that people are selling in the first place but I suspect after the internationals that people might have more pressing concerns and Mert might be saved from getting the chop from most teams.

Plus, he scored on tuesday so this may slow down sales.

Toure isn't a guaranteed starter anymore and silva has a knock, that seems to be the only problems.

Is that all? There was me thinking that players tended to perform before they were renegotiating and once concluded, performance tails off. Nani's performances can't even do that.

In all honesty, it could work out v Palace, highly risky though.

With Rooney out, he could play on the left instead of Giggs

After being completely against getting RvP so far, my wildcard sees him come in (i think). It severely weakens the midfield, although there aren't many appealing midfield options right now. Also, Man Utd's fixtures are outrageously good, he couldnt be ignored. So how does this look?

I got rid of him to bring in Brady before his rise so that I could afford to bring in RVP this week,,, but I've talked myself out of the RVP move because of other issues in my side and now I'm close to wishing I'd kept Coutinho, he surely can't keep blanking for much longer.

So, yes... I would continue with him if I were you

Prefer Hazard to Michu. Think Coutinho is probably going to be a more steadier scorer than Hazard with less blanks as he has guaranteed game time but Hazard definitely has the potential for more double figure GW's

REPOST for anyone playing Fantasy Champions League.

If you're looking for a 4.0 filler for your defense I recommend Joel Campbell from Olympiacos. He's an Arsenal player on loan and plays as a winger or as a striker. Nailed on for the club and our national team (Costa Rica). Left footed, with pace, great dribbling, loves to face defenders and really good finishing. He takes free kicks beautifully, you can find some pretty nice goals on youtube. Arguably our best player with Bryan Ruiz. Scored against the US national team last friday in our 3-1 win.

Out of pure ignorance he is classified as a defender, as almost every player in the greek team.

    hope it helps.

    Mannone - Foster

    S Taylor - Brayford - Koscielny - Yoshida - Clyne

    Thomas - Snodgrass - Mirallas - Coutinho - Kim

    Bony - Lukaku - Aspas

Amazing really. Pre GW1 none of those would have been considered bad picks. How times change...

Wings ive seen many of your posts - and you seem to be fairly clued up, but Mannone c'mon lol

Sunderland are gash at the back, Boruc over Mannone - especially as he'll rise in next few weeks aswell.

Agreed. Too many people dumping Mirallas for example. Think he might be a big beneficiary of Lukaku's arrival.

I'd say 1,000,000 have stopped playing already, and 400,000+ WC already used. We'll see on Sat I suppose.

Far from it - saw someone on here saying they went on Southampton forums where general feeling is he'll be dropped pretty soon as he was poor in last game. Options in the middle for Southampton.

Yeh, but a lot on the Saints forum thought he wouldn't start the last game as well. He's not nailed but the fact that he's played 90 mins in every game so far makes me optimistic, all the other mids are being rotated except him.

hello all, first post this season i think. my question to you...

    would you wildcard this team?

    foster/boruc
    ivanovic/zabaleta/ward/turner(nor)/clyne
    silva/walcott/mirallas/kim/dorrans
    sturridge/giroud/soldado

i am finding it hard to look past the ridiculous amount of dead weight in my team.. foster, ward, clyne, turner, mirallas, dorrans and kim could all do with shipping out.

    stick or twist?

Couple of hits over a couple of weeks and you'll be fine
Could easily out score many of the WC teams this week.

      1 million % stick.

      Your front 3 is excellent

Mirallas and Kim are nailed-on. Haven't hit big points yet, but they will at some point. Not urgent.

      Silva/Walcott - no problem there.

Ward and Turner both nailed on. Clyne will be back in the line-up before too long.

      Ivanovic/Zabaleta - fine and dandy

Only problems I see here are Foster and Dorrants. Definitely don't WC

i prefer kos for the goal threat but mert seems to be a more reliable option. kos is the risk who could pay off handsomely, mert is the safe choice

Nothing between them..although i'm not entirely convinced we've see the last of Verm (can't understand why he didn't look for a way out if he's only bench fodder now) and on only that slight worry i'd say Mert is the safest of the two...
