While the club-record signing of Stephane Sessegnon made most of the West Brom headlines on deadline day, Steve Clarke’s acquisition of Morgan Amalfitano from Marseille may prove a canny piece of business. Arriving at the Hawthorns on a one-year loan deal with a view to a permanent move, the 28-year-old will bring a much-needed creativity to a Baggies side without a goal to their name in the league this season.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Clarke was quick to praise the new arrival and indicated Amalfitano’s versatility could be key for the campaign ahead:

“I’m delighted to welcome Morgan to the club. He is predominantly a right-sided midfielder who can also operate in a number of other midfield and attacking positions. Morgan is a technical player with good quality on the ball. He also has fantastic work-rate and we believe his game is well suited to the Barclays Premier League. Morgan’s arrival will increase competition in midfield and add more quality and depth to the squad.”

The History

A product of the Cannes youth system, Amalfitano’s senior career kicked off back in 2003/04 with French outfit Sedan. Over the course of four seasons, he turned out 126 times and picked up a pair of assists for the strugglers before he was acquired by Ligue 1 side FC Lorient ahead of the 2008/09 campaign.

The midfielder’s first couple of years in his new surrounds harvested nine goals and eight assists over 72 top-flight appearances before Amalfitano improved markedly, with five goals and 16 assists delivered in 2010/11. Signing for Marseille under freedom of contract in July 2011, he failed to replicate his final year at Lorient and managed just two goals and seven assists from 60 league games before making his way to the midlands. Amalfitano has also turned out once for the French national side, providing an assist in a 2-1 win over Germany in February last year.

The Prospects

With the Baggies still failing to adjust to life without Romelu Lukaku, Clarke is yet to settle on a familiar XI or formation so far. The West Brom boss has already handed six midfielders and five forwards game time in the opening three fixtures and switched from a 4-4-2 formation to 4-3-3 as he attempts to find a suitable system without the big Belgian to bang in the goals.

Certainly, Sessegnon’s arrival suggests a move back to the 4-2-3-1 of last season could be on the cards, with the Benin international tucked in behind a lone forward. While such a scenario would indicate Amalfitano is more likely to be handed a berth on the Baggies right, it remains to be seen just how often he can expect starts, bearing in mind the likes of James Morrison and Graham Dorrans also offer options in his preferred position.

Coming in at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.4 in the Sky Sports game, the Frenchman is certainly cheaper than the majority of his midfield team-mates and looks one to monitor, should Clarke decide to lessen his rotation and attempt to nail down a settled side. With games against United, Arsenal and Liverpool, in addition to a trip to Stoke in the following six, though, few will be willing to take a punt on West Brom options right now, with the upcoming schedule affording Clarke’s side little opportunity to turn around their poor start to the season.

Couple of Crystal Palace questions, because I know they've signed many players since GW3:

    1) Is Ward the clear #1 right back?
    2) Do you reckon Puncheon is a good idea?

      1) Yes. They brought in Jack Hunt who would have provided competition, but he's broken his ankle.
      2) Maybe when his price drops .2 or .3. Not at the moment for me, you could do worse though

      Good, not great.

Great would be having another keeper so you didn't have to bench Pablo (I assume you don't want the mental conflict of him scoring/vs Migs keeping clean sheet). Don't see why else you would bench him for a home game given his good form.

          1) Swansea at home for a game under floodlights, against a big side. The place will be rocking.

          2) Michu

          3) Liverpool's first choice right-back is out. Wisdom versus Hernandez and the marauding runs of Ben Davies.

No way are they not scoring. Liverpool aren't going to win every game this season 1-0.

            1) Doesn't = goals. + Liverpool have more than enough going forward.

            2) Has not looked anywhere near his last season self thus far.

            3) Liverpool still have a solid defence.

Hey DZers.Been a while (real life had to get a look in!).

I'm on the WC (not literally).

    Migs (Boruc)

    J.Enrique - Zabaleta - Dawson (Coleman, Collins)

    Yaya - Walcott - Arfa - Brady (P.Hernandez)

    Benteke -Giroud - Sturridge

Mo Man Utd coverage maybe a problem. and also no Chelsea.

Does this excite you or disgust you?

I think the "temperature" on Dawson is that his starts may be a doubt. I have no special insight, but its been bandied about, if that changes anything.

I personally don't believe Yaya is the best use of that money. Structurally, if Dawson is 4.0, yaya could be any one of the top midfielders. I like that distribution of money better, but I don't have a specific recommendation for who (both Silva and Coutinho are in my team now but either one could get the chop next week)

Yanga is probably ahead of him, but not by that much. Its Colo + 1 other. I reckon Yanga will play about 70% of games, may occasionally cover for Santon at left-back too.

I want to take out SIlva. Big mistake putting him in truth.

But what option for under 9.7m should I take. I'm thinking Eriksen or Coutinho are valid options withthe fixtures they have. If I save a bit of money I can also upgrade my 5th midfielder of Delph (from 4.5m) so would appreciate someone who is not Barkley over 4.5m to get too. Thanks.

Benteke is more explosive and less injury prone. If Villa score a goal, there is a fair chance Benteke got the goal or assisted it. He's on penalties and against 2 of the possible top 4 he scored 3 goals in total. He was unlucky not to get past Mignolet in GW3. Also Liverpool look really defensive this season, with the mentality of getting a goal and then being happy with a 1-0 win. Great for Mignolet and defenders, horrible for Sturridge, Asaps and Coutinho. Plus Benteke is just a beast!

      That's my 2 cents 🙂

    Early Bird Update

For those who have had a good start this season, this league is for you.

To qualify all you need is to have scored:

    67 in GW1
49 in GW2 with no hits or 54 with a hit. More hits equals higher score needed.
48 with no transfers in GW3 or 54 with a hit.

Code is 58-338 for those who pass these three points.
273 qualified. Plenty get knocked out each week.

Lewis or Daniels right now. Marshall might not play so Lewis could get game time vs Hull and Daniels might go up to 4.1 and if Myhill doesn't deliver he will be no. 1 at West Brom.
