While the club-record signing of Stephane Sessegnon made most of the West Brom headlines on deadline day, Steve Clarke’s acquisition of Morgan Amalfitano from Marseille may prove a canny piece of business. Arriving at the Hawthorns on a one-year loan deal with a view to a permanent move, the 28-year-old will bring a much-needed creativity to a Baggies side without a goal to their name in the league this season.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Clarke was quick to praise the new arrival and indicated Amalfitano’s versatility could be key for the campaign ahead:

“I’m delighted to welcome Morgan to the club. He is predominantly a right-sided midfielder who can also operate in a number of other midfield and attacking positions. Morgan is a technical player with good quality on the ball. He also has fantastic work-rate and we believe his game is well suited to the Barclays Premier League. Morgan’s arrival will increase competition in midfield and add more quality and depth to the squad.”

The History

A product of the Cannes youth system, Amalfitano’s senior career kicked off back in 2003/04 with French outfit Sedan. Over the course of four seasons, he turned out 126 times and picked up a pair of assists for the strugglers before he was acquired by Ligue 1 side FC Lorient ahead of the 2008/09 campaign.

The midfielder’s first couple of years in his new surrounds harvested nine goals and eight assists over 72 top-flight appearances before Amalfitano improved markedly, with five goals and 16 assists delivered in 2010/11. Signing for Marseille under freedom of contract in July 2011, he failed to replicate his final year at Lorient and managed just two goals and seven assists from 60 league games before making his way to the midlands. Amalfitano has also turned out once for the French national side, providing an assist in a 2-1 win over Germany in February last year.

The Prospects

With the Baggies still failing to adjust to life without Romelu Lukaku, Clarke is yet to settle on a familiar XI or formation so far. The West Brom boss has already handed six midfielders and five forwards game time in the opening three fixtures and switched from a 4-4-2 formation to 4-3-3 as he attempts to find a suitable system without the big Belgian to bang in the goals.

Certainly, Sessegnon’s arrival suggests a move back to the 4-2-3-1 of last season could be on the cards, with the Benin international tucked in behind a lone forward. While such a scenario would indicate Amalfitano is more likely to be handed a berth on the Baggies right, it remains to be seen just how often he can expect starts, bearing in mind the likes of James Morrison and Graham Dorrans also offer options in his preferred position.

Coming in at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.4 in the Sky Sports game, the Frenchman is certainly cheaper than the majority of his midfield team-mates and looks one to monitor, should Clarke decide to lessen his rotation and attempt to nail down a settled side. With games against United, Arsenal and Liverpool, in addition to a trip to Stoke in the following six, though, few will be willing to take a punt on West Brom options right now, with the upcoming schedule affording Clarke’s side little opportunity to turn around their poor start to the season.

From a sporting point of view, you'd probably wanna watch the AFL, Cricket and Soccer matches we have, plus maybe horse racing if you're a punter (Melbourne Cup would be wicked). Tourism wise, Great Barrier Reef/Opera House/Harbour Bridge/Bondi Beach etc. You could come down to Adelaide and check out the Barossa Valley if you're into your wines. I guess just exploring the country is a big 'do'. Don't really know what you should avoid doing, can't see why we wouldn't be tolerant 🙂

Just try and keep it down when you beat us in International Rules 😉

Bondi Beach really is, just a beach. So many nicer ones further up the coast.

Wasn't keen on the Harbour Bridge idea at first but, having done it, it was ****ing brilliant. Up there for a good while and get your monies worth.

I feel a bit bad that I've slagged off Adelaide in my post below now 😛 It's fine if you're into wine I'm sure, but I'm not.

Went there for 2 months in 2010. Sydney, Surfers Paradise, Cairns, Melbourne, Adelaide, back to Sydney then home.

Don't bother going to Adelaide, sod all there. Wish I'd gone to Darwin instead. Surfers Paradise is superb, loads to do. Cairns looks depressing during the day because there's no beach, just mud flats, but is a nice place at night and you can do all the rainforest/great barrier reef stuff there.

I'd recommend the Phillip Island Penguin Parade...but I do have an obsession with penguins for some reason 😯

Surfers is just south of Brisbane. 10 minute bus ride to all the theme parks - Dreamworld, Movieworld, Seaworld (when I was there you could get a combined ticket for all 3 at a massively discounted rate). Casinos, bars, clubs. Impossible to be bored there.

Fellini could be a good punt, but a United defender or RVP would be the better United cover. I think AVB said this morning that Lamela would be "involved" in the game against Norwich, so he could be warming the bench at the start. If you were playing it safe then maybe Lampard? Despite all that game time in the international break it would seem that he would still start and be on almost every set piece. Lots of good options around 9m though, shame they're all punts 😛

I am going Chadli, has had a fair amount of chances and made plenty of key passes. Is also cheaper and has had time to settle into the squad, will bring in Lamela once he has settled in more and has proven his price tag.

I had him from the start. Figured he was a reasonable bet if I could get through the first few weeks. Happy enough to have him now, I reckon Man U. will come out like demons after the press of the last few weeks. Will be keeping a close eye on other options though and if needed I'll sell him

Admittedly I'm worried. But not as worried as I would be if I didn't have 3 solid striker options in Soldado, Studge and K-dawg.

Not convinced about Suarez amiga. We did see how Studge hogged the limelight last season when both played together. Be interesting to monitor nonetheless.

Hope the midfielders step up their game, can't stand this defence is god for any longer 😆

Sturridge has grown into a good striker but Suarez is the best player on that team and much more likely to explode. Watched him in the Uru/Peru game and he looked good. Second goal was a lethal finish. Just keeping my options open, especially re VP

Can I get some feedback on this team please? I'd love some opinions.

    Mignolet, Lewis
    Vidic, Walker, Zabaleta, Chambers, Chester
    Oscar, Ozil, Walcott, Brady, Whittingham
    Benteke, Welbeck, Sturridge

    0.5 in the bank.

Can do Welbeck-->Lukaku or Zabaleta-->Chel def. at will in the coming weeks.

    Thoughts?

I think the only three players guaranteed a starting spot are Ramires, Lampard and Hazard.

I know Oscar has started every game so far but they have Schurle, Mata, Willian and De Bruyne who will be competing for 2 places.

I stayed away from Oscar as I wanted to see what was happening with Mata and Willian first.

Well that is my take on it :S
