While the club-record signing of Stephane Sessegnon made most of the West Brom headlines on deadline day, Steve Clarke’s acquisition of Morgan Amalfitano from Marseille may prove a canny piece of business. Arriving at the Hawthorns on a one-year loan deal with a view to a permanent move, the 28-year-old will bring a much-needed creativity to a Baggies side without a goal to their name in the league this season.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Clarke was quick to praise the new arrival and indicated Amalfitano’s versatility could be key for the campaign ahead:

“I’m delighted to welcome Morgan to the club. He is predominantly a right-sided midfielder who can also operate in a number of other midfield and attacking positions. Morgan is a technical player with good quality on the ball. He also has fantastic work-rate and we believe his game is well suited to the Barclays Premier League. Morgan’s arrival will increase competition in midfield and add more quality and depth to the squad.”

The History

A product of the Cannes youth system, Amalfitano’s senior career kicked off back in 2003/04 with French outfit Sedan. Over the course of four seasons, he turned out 126 times and picked up a pair of assists for the strugglers before he was acquired by Ligue 1 side FC Lorient ahead of the 2008/09 campaign.

The midfielder’s first couple of years in his new surrounds harvested nine goals and eight assists over 72 top-flight appearances before Amalfitano improved markedly, with five goals and 16 assists delivered in 2010/11. Signing for Marseille under freedom of contract in July 2011, he failed to replicate his final year at Lorient and managed just two goals and seven assists from 60 league games before making his way to the midlands. Amalfitano has also turned out once for the French national side, providing an assist in a 2-1 win over Germany in February last year.

The Prospects

With the Baggies still failing to adjust to life without Romelu Lukaku, Clarke is yet to settle on a familiar XI or formation so far. The West Brom boss has already handed six midfielders and five forwards game time in the opening three fixtures and switched from a 4-4-2 formation to 4-3-3 as he attempts to find a suitable system without the big Belgian to bang in the goals.

Certainly, Sessegnon’s arrival suggests a move back to the 4-2-3-1 of last season could be on the cards, with the Benin international tucked in behind a lone forward. While such a scenario would indicate Amalfitano is more likely to be handed a berth on the Baggies right, it remains to be seen just how often he can expect starts, bearing in mind the likes of James Morrison and Graham Dorrans also offer options in his preferred position.

Coming in at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.4 in the Sky Sports game, the Frenchman is certainly cheaper than the majority of his midfield team-mates and looks one to monitor, should Clarke decide to lessen his rotation and attempt to nail down a settled side. With games against United, Arsenal and Liverpool, in addition to a trip to Stoke in the following six, though, few will be willing to take a punt on West Brom options right now, with the upcoming schedule affording Clarke’s side little opportunity to turn around their poor start to the season.

Can i get a rating please?
    Mignolet
    Enrique - koscielny - walker
    Oscar - Walcott - barfa - Hernandez
    Soldado - giroud - benteke

    Mcgregor - turner - Chester - wardprowse

Also, I have $1.3m spare but intended on using it to bring in Suarez when he's back. But am I better off usin it now to improve somewhere?

I would replace Enrique with a Chelsea/Man Utd defender so you are minimising the risk of losing points by Liverpool conceding.

Also agree with Vilow87 about Lampard over Oscar but looks good to me.

I am now thinking of going with Hazard on the WC, he seems to be the forgotten man around here.

Just struggling to fill that premium mid slot (other than Walcott) as none of the options are that appealing. Considering Michu, Lamela, Silva, Hazard, Lampard

I checked the bookies odds and Yaya just edged Coutinho.

I checked odds for the team to win, odds for there to be 2.5+ goals and odds to score but accept that this does not take in to account BP or assists.

total crap shoot at this point. I do worry about Michu's Europa duties, and only one good week in the next 3.

Lamela is the new shiny object, and if he does anything this weekend you'll get a little money out of him. Can't say the same for the others.

Hazard still has that rotation cloud over him. We haven't seen it yet, but we will.

Yeah, really struggling...and I am not interested in bringing back Coutinho, have not been impressed with him at all. His stats are deceivingly good - he has racked up 9 shots so far, but not a single one has looked threatening.

All the top teams have moved into the rotation nightmare zone. I think Hazard is as rotation proof as any outfielder at Chelsea.

Hazard was been considered one of the main front runners for highest points scorers at the start of the season.

Now because of a couple of poor returns he actually does seem forgotten. A lot of potential rotation worries though

I would go for Lampard and B.Arfa

Worried that Oscar might lose his spot with the arrival of Willian. I think Lampard will score points and expect him to be a regular under Mourinho.

HBA is on good form and has a decent fixture list.
Mirallas is up against Chelsea and he has under performed so far.

But no matter what you decide you are gambling as there is a big chunk of luck in this game.

Sturridge not 100% fit and Lamela not played yet to tell. It's a gamble.

A bit of a new topic here. Looking for some advice. I'm in a champions league pool with 8 guys. We each are drafting 4 teams. I drew the second pick. Bayern was chosen first. Who do you guys rate at the 2 pick? I love Chelsea's draw but real Madrid and Barcelona are obviously stacked. Opinions?

people on a wildcard not including him is a huge mistake. he is going to come good..price is just at 9.3. trust me..once he starts getting those points everybody who went for hba and hernandez are going to make funds for including him. Also he is the main man for Mourinho.

Is this worth of 4 point hit if I do these?

Silva -> Ben Arfa and Mannone -> Boruc or someone else since Marshall is injured.

So I take that from what has been posted earlier about price rises that I'm better off trading Enrique out for vidic? I thought there was a rise on the cards for Enrique but if not I could use the united cover.

Yeah but it would mean dropping walker, but I really believe Tottenham have a heap of clean sheets coming. If I was to get vidic it would have to be for Enrique, as I have mignolet for pool cover already

    WC team.

    Migs
    vidic, collins, dawson
    hazard, eriksen, walcott, ben arfa
    sturrudge, giroud, benetke

    subs: gazza, coleman, JWP, Bturner

    0.2m in the bank.

any glaring errors? Eriksen is a punt, a huge punt. But, if he doesn't come good I can switch him out.

    Is Dawson nailed on?
