While the club-record signing of Stephane Sessegnon made most of the West Brom headlines on deadline day, Steve Clarke’s acquisition of Morgan Amalfitano from Marseille may prove a canny piece of business. Arriving at the Hawthorns on a one-year loan deal with a view to a permanent move, the 28-year-old will bring a much-needed creativity to a Baggies side without a goal to their name in the league this season.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Clarke was quick to praise the new arrival and indicated Amalfitano’s versatility could be key for the campaign ahead:

“I’m delighted to welcome Morgan to the club. He is predominantly a right-sided midfielder who can also operate in a number of other midfield and attacking positions. Morgan is a technical player with good quality on the ball. He also has fantastic work-rate and we believe his game is well suited to the Barclays Premier League. Morgan’s arrival will increase competition in midfield and add more quality and depth to the squad.”

The History

A product of the Cannes youth system, Amalfitano’s senior career kicked off back in 2003/04 with French outfit Sedan. Over the course of four seasons, he turned out 126 times and picked up a pair of assists for the strugglers before he was acquired by Ligue 1 side FC Lorient ahead of the 2008/09 campaign.

The midfielder’s first couple of years in his new surrounds harvested nine goals and eight assists over 72 top-flight appearances before Amalfitano improved markedly, with five goals and 16 assists delivered in 2010/11. Signing for Marseille under freedom of contract in July 2011, he failed to replicate his final year at Lorient and managed just two goals and seven assists from 60 league games before making his way to the midlands. Amalfitano has also turned out once for the French national side, providing an assist in a 2-1 win over Germany in February last year.

The Prospects

With the Baggies still failing to adjust to life without Romelu Lukaku, Clarke is yet to settle on a familiar XI or formation so far. The West Brom boss has already handed six midfielders and five forwards game time in the opening three fixtures and switched from a 4-4-2 formation to 4-3-3 as he attempts to find a suitable system without the big Belgian to bang in the goals.

Certainly, Sessegnon’s arrival suggests a move back to the 4-2-3-1 of last season could be on the cards, with the Benin international tucked in behind a lone forward. While such a scenario would indicate Amalfitano is more likely to be handed a berth on the Baggies right, it remains to be seen just how often he can expect starts, bearing in mind the likes of James Morrison and Graham Dorrans also offer options in his preferred position.

Coming in at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.4 in the Sky Sports game, the Frenchman is certainly cheaper than the majority of his midfield team-mates and looks one to monitor, should Clarke decide to lessen his rotation and attempt to nail down a settled side. With games against United, Arsenal and Liverpool, in addition to a trip to Stoke in the following six, though, few will be willing to take a punt on West Brom options right now, with the upcoming schedule affording Clarke’s side little opportunity to turn around their poor start to the season.

I'm on a wc, wanting to put more into my defence.
If money was no object, what 3 big defenders would be preferable among:
    Luiz
    Agger
    Enrique
    Vertonghen
    Mertesacker
    Koscielny
    Vidic
    Evra
    Zabaleta
    Nastasic

I'm more partial to CBs rather than FBs. I've been going around in circles. Currently on Mert, Vidic & Vertonghen, but Luiz and Agger are all really interesting.

I would go with Evra, Luiz,Enrique.
I would advice not going with mert
      because arsenal defence is highly
      unpredictable. They may have a
good defence but get very leaky.and
since he us a cb clean sheets have
      to be a priority.
These 3 would give you a very stingy
back 3 who have a knack if popping
      in goaks and assists.
      imo

I'm on a wc and I have the same dilemma. So far, my thinking is that West Ham are a defence-first, park-the-bus kind of team, especially away from home. For this reason I'm leaning towards keeping.

I got rid of Reid this week, as an upgrade to Visic though ... I also think West Ham will start shipping goals now too! Depends what your circumstances are though ... if you don't really need to then don't but if you have a FT that you need to burn then maybe downgrade to Burner and upgrade elsewhere later!

haha - I already did all the hard work in making it. It tells you if a player is performing below average, average or above average for minutes played and points scored. It also tells you their PPM and PPMPG, as well as displays the players fixture difficulty based on whatever gameweek you choose.

All geezers worried about Silva's chances of starting this weekend, listen up.

Just did some quick digging up of Özil's record in his previous 5 seasons. Thought I'd share my thoughts.

    2008-09 Werder Bremen 3G 15A
    2009-10 Werder Bremen 9G 17A
    2010-11 Real Madrid 6G 19A
    2011-12 Real Madrid 4G 20A
2012-13 Real Madrid 9G 16A (amazing considering he started in only 23 games)

In his first 6 starts for Werder Bremen, he managed 3G 4A
In his first 6 starts for Real Madrid, he managed 1G 4A

How many Umlauts can we expect from Özil.....

    1) Over the season?

Using a 5-season average for my projection
(blindly assuming Özil hasn't improved as a player or changed his roles over the 5 seasons)

Roughly 6G 17A. Total of 168 points at 4.8 PPG.

Taking his Madrid career and extrapolating his stats to make sure he starts 30 games this season. I believe this could be considered his upside this season

Roughly 11G 19A. Total of 201 points at 5.76 PPG.

    2) In the short-term?

In his first 6 starts at a new club (Arsenal), he will manage 2G 4A, returning a total of 42 points at 7PPG

In his first 10 games at a new club (Arsenal), he will manage 3G 6A, roughly returning a total of of 65 points at 6.5 PPG

    LAST WORD ON UMLAUT

There are a few players who love to get off to a great start very early in their new club. The last time I saw someone show this interesting pattern was a Togonese two seasons back when E-bay went on loan to Spurs. Prompted me to get him in and thankfully, I did. He ended up having a great start.

I'm not convinced Umlaut will be a long-term option but if you are thinking of getting him in at some point or if you are looking for a premium mid or if you need to replace the legendary David Silva....John Cena called it.

    THE TIME IS NOW

    (Cue: 😯 )

Yeah fair dues. When you have so many strikers in form, I have found it tough to consider Giroud over rvp/benteke/studge/soldado. At a time when we're in the hunt for premium mids, there may be some hope.

Giroud has been in better form that Soldado, he has higher PPM and if you got in at the start got him for 1 million less. That million could be better spent elsewhere. I also think Walcott is better value than Ozil but I suppose we need to wait and see who gets the most points.

Nice team but you could get Giroud in for Soldado and Mignolet in for De Gea to make some extra wonga. You could also switch to a 4-3-3 and you probably only have one bargain/middle of the road player in your starting 11.

I've got him on the WC - this is the time to get him I think. The big mids aren't firing yet and many other decent choices are due for a price fall, mainly thanks to Weezil - Michu, Hazard, Luiz, Mert etc.
If he disappoints then it's a straight swap for Suarez, Bob Salado, Lukaku etc. and you can pick up the others for less.

Any good replacement for Collins ? i'm convinced WHU won't keep a CS this week and their future schedule doesn't look good either.

    WCT

    Mignolet - 4.0
    Luiz - Vidic - Mertesacker - Turner - Chester
    Ozil - Eriksen - Lampard - Pablo - Brady
    Sturridge - Negredo - Giroud

    Thoughts?

      Concerns:

Luiz - might not start, safer options are Terry and Cole
MTurner - can downgrade to BTurner and save 0.5
Eriksen - might not start and we're all still waiting to see how AVB will roll out his side this week
Pablo - flash in the pan, he's scoreed his points, consider Nolan Redmond, etc.
Negredo - Man City are still just risky with so much rotation, he'll probably start this week but if he blanks then Dzeko is back in at his expense

Otherwise it's a very handsome team that could well explode ... some nice differentials in there!

Pablo and Brady will rotate a bit anyway.

        Negredo I'm confident with.

Agreed on Luiz but looking at his credentials I can't see him not being first choice. Probably my biggest concern personally.

And I think AVB has to utilise Eriksen asap, if you read his exact quotes from yesterday it definitely looks like he's going to start against Norwich.

Would swap Ozil for Walcott and also Luiz for Ivanovic as it is uncertain if he will play this week or if he will walk straight back in to the team. If he does not play this GW I suspect his price will fall more and you can get him cheap once you know he is going to start.

I suspect that it is because defenders with clean sheets are scoring so high at the moment factored in with a lot of WCs. People are going for Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs and Man Utd defenders. But I agree it is crazy as he is a cheap option and will provide a good points return.

those who had Lamela in their team, AVB said he had just landed in London and only had 1 training with the squad. he might still not start, (surely will come off the bench tho).

I would go with Evra, Luiz,Enrique.

I would advice not going with mert because arsenal defence is highly unpredictable. They may have a good defence but get very leaky.and since he us a cb clean sheets have to be a priority.
These 3 would give you a very stingy back 3 who have a knack if popping in goaks and assists.
    imo

Lots of doubt and uncertainty effecting my team this week. Have Silva, Sturridge & Toure (Coleman with a knock as well?). If I make any changes I'm bound to transfer out the player that does start so thinking of just saving a transfer and assessing after this week. What would you guys do?

        1. Not so sure and his price is dropping so would hold of until you see him get some starts,
        2. He has played midweek for Brazil so expect him to miss this GW, should be challenging for a spot soon though. Again I would hold off until you see that he starts and you should get him cheaper then.
        3. I'm not sure when he is back from injury but I suspect he will reclaim the RB position once he is fully fit. Would probably for Vidic in the meantime.
        4. Yes I think he is a definite starter.
        5. I think he will keep his space for the time being but may see him rotated later.
