[sbu_large_image] The Knee Jerk

Arsenal’s young gun comes to the fore to steal Mesut Ozil’s thunder. Tottenham’s icy finisher shows his worth to overshadow their own debutant, while the Gunners top scorer gives his owners a scare by limping off with a knee problem.

The Game Changer

All eyes were on Mesut Ozil’s performance on his debut and, while the German’s display exuded class, composure and the first of many assists, it was Aaron Ramsey who will hog the headlines. A brace of goals capped what has been a hugely impressive season so far for the young Welshman – a player who has suddenly emerged from the shadow of Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere, to promote himself as a true box-to-box midfielder, capable of controlling matches and scoring goals.

Ramsey’s smart volley and a slotted finish from Olivier Giroud’s pass took him to five goals in all competitions – matching his total from last season. Quite simply, Ramsey is a player reborn at a time when the Arsenal midfield looks set to be rejuvenated by Ozil’s promptings and uncanny eye for the killer pass.

While the pre-match effort concentrated on how to juggle the cash to possibly accomodate Ozil’s price tag, Ramsey is available for just 5.6 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), £5.8 million in the Sky Sports game and £2.5 million in the Sun Dream Team – a game which has him ranked as the top midfielder.

Today’s returns will surely see his stock soar further, as Fantasy managers seriously consider loading up on Arsenal’s attacking assets as the creativity and opportunities for goals in the Gunners camp hits new heights. Indeed, with Giroud finding consistency up front, there’s even a case for a switch in emphasis, away from the heavy hitting midfield trio of Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla and Ozil with a Ramsey/Giroud pairing currently offering strong value.

A late injury scare for Giroud may just change all that, however. The Frenchman was withdrawn late on with a knee problem and we’re awaiting news on the extent of the damage.

The Underused

While Ramsey is the darling on one side of north London, Gylfi Sigurdsson was the toast of White Hart Lane. Given the opportunity to impress by Andre Villas-Boas, the Icelander seized the day, providing a stunning reminder of his goalscoring ability as Spurs eased past a disappointing Norwich.

Like Ozil, Spurs had their own glittering debutant on show. Christian Eriksen’s performance, embroidered by a debut assist, will doubtless have piqued the interest of Fantasy managers. It was Sigurdsson who provided the end product, however.

At just 6.9 in the FPL, we now find ourselves reassessing his potential. While Eriksen and Erik Lamela offer the glamour and excitement of new arrivals at the Lane, Siggurdsson’s talent as a Fantasy asset is proven from his season at Swansea. If he can cement his starting role, he could yet make a return to the reckoning and draw investment away from Tottenham’s expensive imports.

The Selection Poser

Giroud’s injury is an immediate concern for many – given that he is already the most popular transfer target amongst the forwards following today’s goal and assist haul, clearly there is an urgent need for clarity.

Subject to over 268,000 transfers in over the international fortnight, he has already acquired over 15,000 new owners on the back of this afternoon’s display but the bandwagon will surely slow on the back of his withdrawal.

Post-match, Wenger was asked whether the Frenchman would be fit for the midweek Champions League match against Marseille but gave little away:

“That’s my worry today after the game. We are very thin at the moment. [It is] a knee problem. He is the player at the moment that would be very difficult for us [to replace.]”

With Lukas Podolski and Yaya Sanogo out and Nicklas Bendtner far from match-fit, Wenger’s forward options are stretched to threadbare already. A potential absence for Giroud would be a massive blow to his Fantasy owners but could, in turn, promote Walcott as the central option if the prognosis proves pessimistic. Wenger’s next injury update is already eagerly awaited.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Ivanovic - Collins - Murner - Ward - Chester

      I don't think I'd WC
Wait and see how Cout and lambert play this GW in particular

      Maybe -4
      Cout/mirralas to HBA/Hernadez
      &
      Lambert to giroud

Or even take it to -8
With Hernadez being cheaper ..... Upgrade a def

      Lambert > Giroud

Then your team is pretty fricken' awesome I'd say. Slightly weak defence, but that's not an urgent fix.

If you'd prefer to improve defence first. Ward > Swansea defender. They have an excellent run of games coming up.

If you wanted to downgrade MF I'd wait to see how Moses and Cout play on Monday then consider that downgrade? But there are plenty of 8m or less MF options.

But no, I don't think you should WC.

Sorry to be a party pooper but I want tomorrow and Monday's matches to be a bore fest with plenty of clean sheets. I have Clyne, Boruc, Collins, Toure and Coutinho to go so a nil all SOT-WHU game would be brilliant as would a Pool clean sheet with Coutinho returns.

IMO, no. Removed him on the WC ahead of this week, just not convinced he'll outscore any of Benteke/Studge/Giroud, and Eriksen is a good option if you really want "coverage"

Not with Sturridge, Giroud and Benteke in better form.
And with Eriksen for Spurs being a cheaper and better coverage of Spurs than alternatives in the other sides.

that is a tough question, loved him in spain and he's clearly got the skill and now with eriksen.. he'll come good. Could take some time. I wouldn't make space for him at the minute, but will watch very closely.

Was thinking about how certain players might appear to be 'fixture proof' and here's a proposed explanation.

Let's assume chances are converted at a fixed rate irrespective of opposition quality. Then if you work out how, for a given player, chances vary with opposition quality, you can work out how their goals vary and hence how 'fixture proof' they are.

Also, there are different types of chances. chances from open play. chances from set pieces (free kicks, corners, penalties).

Generally speaking chances from open play significantly decrease with better opposition (better defence). So for players not on set pieces you would expect a decrease in goals - not fixture proof.

Chances from set pieces do not seem to be restricted in quite the same way. You can fail to breach the defence of a good team in open play, but get numerous free kicks outside the box, corners, as well as penalties. Hence set piece takers tend to attract the label of 'fixture proof' - RVP, Benteke, Bale, Gerrard, Mata, Walcott.

Whether they get their points in open play is not remembered - merely that they scored from the sort of chance that is less affected by good opposition.

            Thoughts?

Haha, I'm looking for a way of making less transfers, it's not for nothing. If I maximize my set piece chances I might have a bunch of players I could keep for the long term. Already got RVP, Benteke, Soldado. Maybe should add Lampard and Ozil.

Chances from set-pieces should be pretty dependent on the opposition team as well methinks.

For me, the biggest contributing factor to "fixture proof" is the quality of players in that player's team. Being a solid FPL prospect from the top 6 (and Pool) warrants you the label of "fixture proof"

Thing is, while yo could still score against big teams, surely you should still score less against small teams and hence not actually be fixture proof.

Maybe the issue is that fixture proof doesn't literally mean 'no reduction in goals with better oppositoon' but simply means 'scores more often than most players against better opposition '.

I guess the only way to answer the set piece question is to get an analysis of set piece shots against top 6 v bottom 14, and goals.

"Fixture proof" is inaccurate terminology in my opinion. There is no such thing if taken literally. Set piece takers have a higher chance, given the right circumstances, to score in every game, but that does not mean they will.

All of this is limited conjecture and does not/cannot include the myriad of other circumstances that may or may not have an effect on a certain player scoring in a certain matchup. Admittedly it plays a part. And can be used as a rough guide. But should not be followed without consideration being given to other extremely important factors such as fixtures and team/player form.

In the end I think it's impossible, or far too much work without getting paid, to diagnose exactly what will cause a player to perform well in any particular circumstance. But using all the obvious methods as rough guides and picking based on those will stand you in good stead without FPL turning from a fun little hobby into a chore.

Yeah fair enough, see above, I think fixture proof is not literally true, it simply means scores at an above average rate against better opposition.

I think this makes great sense. Explains why players like Gerrard and Lampard have shifted deeper but still consistently come up with goals if not at quite the same rate.

Be interesting to see if you could put together a team of set-piece takers.

You look at the only players that are 1st choice Pens, Free Kicks and take corners as well.
              Van Persie
              Lampard

I'd do out for Eriksen. There is the europa league games taking their toll lots of rotation concern, but Eriksen looked so at ease today. He was like how I expected Holtby to be. He was really alert, and somehow showed incredible peripheral vision as to where his team mates were despite it being his debut, he was passing to them without even looking. It was kind of supernatural. I'm getting him as soon as possible, purely on a 'pick the players you personally like' basis. This was the first game where i thought Tottenham clicked more than usual, Eriksen really does link the midfield to attack better than all their previous signings.

Just wondering whether to take a 4 point hit to get him, will be watching the price rises.

I said earlier today that i took out rvp to put in Lukaku so I can decide what relatively high priced mids to get in and upgrade that area, and was told it was the knee jerkiest comment they'd ever read.

Anyone getting Lukaku for that low price though? I thought even towards the end of the game Everton were committing players froward in attack. They're a really impressive side. I just don't associate Everton with scoring many goals, but the same could be said of West Brom. I hope Lukaku just plays more minutes though.

I have goosebumps. Not really, i feel something but don't know what it is. It might be optimism. It feels kind of alien. Everyone likes to get a bargain don't they, even in fantasy football land. Feels like defeat to buy a player after a price rise, I missed the differential options in Ben Arfa, Ramsey, Hernandez, Eriksen, Siggurdson. They're like tainted goods. I didn't have faith in them, now they can't be picks born out of hope, just desperation.

I think they thought it was knee jerk getting rid of rvp, but that whole match was agonising. I'm trying to limit the agony and Moyes is not helping fielding the worst players at his disposable at every opportunity.

Could be a force to be reckoned with if he could nail down that role on the left flank and with new players like Eriksen and Lamela supplying him, the goals could keep on coming. That being said, is Eriksen (1.1m extra) a better option?

thought Brady was 90 minutes man. don't like seeing get subbed.

Barkley you never know how firm his place is.

Barkley or Brady to Ramsey then..

I need a Shaw brace assisted by JWP on top of that!

A goal for 2nd sub Collins would actually make the Nani punt a success.

Sold Mirallas this morning (and O'Shea). Bought Baines (and Brady). I think with Lukaku playing, Everton will score for fun, and still keep a reasonable number of clean sheets. But the highest scoring, best value players will be Lukaku, Baines, and Coleman. I think Baines will have an immense season.

Mirallas is good, and might do very well this season. I just think that there are better Everton options.

2 disastrous last minute changes this week then:

Silva -> Nani (4 points) and switching the armband from Giroud to Soldado.

Now, what to do with Nani. Thinking of cutting my losses and immediately getting rid. Seems like chasing points, but Ramsey has great fixtures and if nothing else should be a reasonable short term punt with Caz/Arteta/Ox/Pod all out injured.

Will also leave me more than enough to get RVP for any of my current front 3 for GW6.

            Boruc, Davis
            Zabaleta, Terry, Toure, Chester, Ward
            Walcott, Nani, Mirallas, Nolan, Morrison
            Giroud, Sturridge, Soldado

City have kept 2 CS with Kolarov in the team. Newcastle barely threatened. The there was Cardiff.

But damn that man is a risk
