The Gameweek continues with just one Sunday fixture, as Southampton entertain Sam Allardyce’s West Ham at St Mary’s. Both sides go into the game off the back of 1-0 setbacks last time out and will be looking to push up to the upper echelons of the table with three points.

The managers have contrasting options in attack for today’s game. While Mauricio Pochettino has the opportunity to pair England striker Rickie Lambert with new signing Pablo Osvaldo, Allardyce is woefully short on firepower with Andy Carroll now set for a prolonged spell on the sidelines. That could well make for a cagey affair, although Lambert’s Fantasy owners will hope that their man continues his positive start to the season by adding to his opening day strike from the spot at the Hawthorns.

Our Dugout Discussion chatroom is now open for those looking for some real-time accompaniment to the live broadcast.

The team news is in and is as follows:

Southampton make three changes from the side that stumbled at Norwich last time out. Luke Shaw and Nathaniel Clyne oust Danny Fox and Callum Chambers from the full-back berths, while James Ward-Prowse makes way for Jay Rodriguez on the right of the attacking midfield three, with the former Burnley man slotting in alongside Osvaldo and Adam Lallana behind Lambert.

Sam Allardyce makes just one alteration from the Gameweek 3 home loss to Stoke. Ravel Morrison is drafted in for the injured Stewart Downing on the right of the front three, with Joey O’Brien yet again selected at left-back, consigning new boy Razvan Rat to bench-warming duties once more.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Here's a list of players for the Swansea v Liverpool match, which kicks off Monday night at 8pm, who if you don't own you'll want to do poorly. All the players in the list are owned by at least 5% of people.

    Mignolet (39.7%)
    Sturridge (22.1%)
    Coutinho (18.2%)
    Michu (14.6%)
    José Enrique (11.6%)
    Williams (10.2%)
    Hernández (10.2%)
    Johnson (9.6%)
    Agger (8.3%)
    Touré (7.8%)
    Vorm (7.5%)
    Gerrard (7.2%)
    Routledge (6.5%)
    Bony (6.4%)
    Lucas (5.3%)

The idea behind this post is for example if you don't own any players from Swansea or Liverpool you'd want Lucas to score rather than Sturridge. Or Bony to score rather than Hernandez.

disagree. its not always madness. Early in the game, like now, you want to raise your team value. There are stats on this: How often does a kneejerked player get injured before the GW you brought him in for. If there arent stats on it please someone make it:)

If you always wait until saturday morning before kickoff to do your transfers, good luck with that. I don't think its a sound strategy.

    Just wildcarded

    I've gone from this

    Mignolet
    Mertesacker / Touré / Ivanovic / Reid
    Mirallas / Walcott / Lampard / Coutinho
    Soldado (c) / Benteke (vc)

    Boruc / Anelka / Turner / Kim Bo-Kyung

    to

    Mignolet
Zabaleta / José Enrique / Coleman
Ramsey / Yaya Touré / Lampard / Ben Arfa
    Sturridge / Giroud (c) / Benteke (vc)

    Boruc / Barkley / Ferdinand / Whittaker

    any changes needed?

Not a fan of that midfield.

Ramsey, Yaya, Lamp ---> Ozil/Walcott, Eriksen, Whittingham maybe?

I think Walcott will come good soon. I trust Ozil to score points, he is an all around amazing player. Eriksen is still a bit of a punt at this point, but he looked very good in his debut and he will be nailed on. Whittingham more nailed on than Ramsey long term.

my original team was a "good on paper" containing players who everyone thought would be good before the season began yet hasn't done anything so far but kept by some because they "will come good" yet they haven't in 4 weeks. If I don't change to players that are actually doing well then I'm going to be left further behind

    Soldado vs Giroud

Would you rather get Giroud (and double him with Walcott) or keep Soldado? The patience on Soldado seems to be running out, but then he didn't look that bad, at least his stats don't (I didn't watch the match)

According to the stats on ESPN, he got 3 shots in the box, one got blocked, one hit the woodwork and one on/off target (don't remember). We all know how good he is with those shots inside the box, and he could start scoring from open play soon.

As for Giroud, Ozil, Walcott and Santi behind him. And he's looking quite good with a goal per game.

    Thoughts?

      santi injured

got wally and girourd and think both can deliver as walcott could have had hatty ydai by half time and a striker at arsenal will always get chances

however bought eriksen in and have soldado and eriksen

im going to get rid of soldado after next gw has he doesnt get enough of the ball in open play for me i feel eriksen is enough "coverage"

going to do soldado to rooney gw6 (if no injuries occur)

At the end of the season maybe. But this is a predictions game and points after 4 games are hardly representative of the points that will be scored over the remaining 34. To give a simple example, a player with 12 shots on target but no goals is still more likely to get the FPL points than one with 4 on target and 4 goals.

Pretty much this. Though yeah, Giroud has looked good. I am just wanting to be covered everywhere possible. Leaving out Spurs' lone striker with those fixtures just doesn't seem the right move still. And we know he can score with his record from La Liga.

Building a team: thoughts on prices.

I was wondering if there was a different way of thinking about player prices (especially RVP's)...

Basically, that as every Goalkeeper costs at least 4.0mill, defs 4.0, mids 4.5 and forwards 4.5 and that you have to have 2gks, 5defs etc, then you actually have a usable budget of 36 million [ie 100 minus the sum of 2x4 (gks), 4x5 (defs), 4.5x5 (mids) and 4.5x3 (I'm sure you get it now!)].

This puts expensive players like RVP into good perspective as RVP, in effect, costs 10 million net (14.5- 4.5 minimum price of a striker) of your 36 million (28% of your budget!!!), while strikers like Sturridge originally cost 4.5 mill net (12.5% of your usable budget) and are therefore far more cost effective. Players like Robbie Brady therefore cost about 0.6mill now.

Defenders show their value even more here, especially with the points they're returning, so someone like Coleman costs 1.5mill (4% of your budget) but is the 2nd highest points scorer! Even Baines is only 9.7% of your budget.

Is that useful in any way, or just maths for the sake of it??

But do you think that he'll then get you enough points even this way to justify taking up 28% of your budget? In conjunction with the two cheapest strikers (ie ones that will typically never play), he costs the same as Benteke and Sturridge and a bottom priced striker. Will he score as many points as those two put together?

If RVP is going to get 28% of your points over the entire season (which isn't unlikely) then he's worth the cost.

Isn't unlikely? Let's say you aim for 2,300 points, 28% of which is 644 points. Even if you captain RVP every week, that implies he would need to get 322 points over the season.

It highlights the shortcomings of the value approach though. RVP did not represent good value last season on a points per pound basis, yet was considered a must have player by many. Sometimes we need to target absolute returns in place of relative returns.

Well, true! (though obviously who can predict how many points we should be aiming for!)
But he's got to be sh*t hot to deserve it (and currently isn't), plus does it show some players' values in a differing light? i.e. the use in spreading your money around.

Interesting point. However keep in mind the player who scored many points this week could again score more points that the player who didn't score many points this week. This isn't even taking account the player who scored OK this week, who could either score more or less than the player who scored alot this week, and/or the player who didn't score very well this week.

Which player are you going to swap for Suarez if you would get him GW6?

If you have Soldado it seems pretty obvious atm imo. But what if you have Benteke, Giroud and Sturridge like me? Sturridge seems to be the most logical choice but he will probably remain at the center, while Suarez might operate from the flank, so I'm not sure weather it's a good move to do a direct swap, especially considering the price-difference.

Yes, of course... But you're not looking at the whole picture than. Sturridge scores plenty of goals too, I believe he gets as many points as Suarez, if not more if you look at the amount of time played. So Sturridge closer to goal remains a small advantage. You can't deny that if Sturridge would be placed on the flank you wouldn't even doubt about switching him for Suarez, so it does matter.
