Clean sheets are the order of the day once again as Southampton and West Ham play out a goalless draw in Sunday’s only fixture. While the two sides continue to impress defensively, their inability to find the net is a real concern – both have notched just twice over the opening four fixtures:

The Game Changer

Jussi Jaaskelainen’s heroics between the sticks were once again crucial to the Hammers’ prospects today. Helping his side to a vital point at St Mary’s, the Finnish star denied Mauricio Pochettino’s side with five saves to register his third clean sheet in four matches – with just a single goal conceded to Stoke so far, the London outfit have been superb at the back and somewhat atoned for the problems up front which have seen them fail to score in three successive matches.

Up next for the Hammers is a home game against an Everton side that have one goal in three before a trip to Hull – more defensive points look likely before the schedule takes a turn for the worse from Gameweek 7 onwards.

The Underused

Seemingly out of favour under Pochettino, Nathaniel Clyne returned to the Southampton first XI for the first time this term. The right-back turned in an impressive showing and with a couple of bonus points also on the cards, he could return to Fantasy radars after shedding over 24,000 owners and dropping down to 4.4 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – at least 0.2 cheaper than any other regular in the Saints’ defence.

With four kind home games (CPL, SWA, FUL, HUL) and a trip to Stoke in the next seven, Clyne looks set for further returns as Pochettino’s look to continue a run that has now seen them concede just twice in the opening four Gameweeks.

The Selection Poser

Clyne’s return was one of three changes from Pochettino today as Luke Shaw and Jay Rodriguez were also named in the starting line-up. While Shaw’s return was expected after he proved his fitness for the England Under 21s over the last week, his owners will be concerned after he was subbed off towards the end of the match – the player has since taken to twitter to reveal his withdrawal was due to cramp but his propensity for picking up niggles and failing to last 90 minutes is clearly becoming an issue.

Pochettino’s decision to hand Rodriguez a chance proved frustrating for James Ward-Prowse’s new owners. The youngster had started all of the first three Gameweeks and with a share of set-piece duties and kindly price tag, he was acquired by an extra 57,000 new FPL owners over the two-week international break. Handed an 19-minute second-half cameo towards the end of the stalemate, Ward-Prowse could be set for an exodus if Rodriguez keeps his place.

For the visitors, the second-half introduction of Razvan Rat could be a sign that Sam Allardyce is set to alter his full-back options. The summer signing hadn’t featured in the league prior to today but was sent on just after the hour mark in a move that allowed the versatile Joey O’Brien to switch from left-back to the opposite flank and saw Guy Demel withdrawn instead – perhaps an ominous sign for the Ivorian’s owners over the weeks to come.

At the moment Moyes has no one to rotate with! Rio won't be playing twice in a week very often so as not to aggravate old injuries so Smalling is all he has left but with Rafael, Jones and Evans out he needs him to cover RB.

It's all well and good giving Fabio a go at RB against a team like Palarse but I know first hand exactly how shit he is against decent opposition 🙁

    2) save the FT, Benteke - Lukaku and get some spurs defensive cover
    3) .....?

Long term plan is to grab Michu from GW7 onwards, and drop RVP for Ozil/Wally after his good run of games

I don't hold this "RvP and a weak team or no RvP and a strong team" mentality. My line-up reads:

    Boruc
    Zab, Coleman, Kos, Collins, Wisdom
    Lampard, Lamela, Moses, Hernandez, Brady
    RvP, Sturridge, Giroud

and I'm playing 4-3-3 to gain from the clean sheets/bonus derived from CS/proven forwards.

Perfect line up. Having RVP doesn't impact on your team negatively what so ever.

      Mine reads

      Mig

      Williams Toure Dawson

      Lamp Wally Ramsey Eriksen

      RVP Girude Benteke

You can't do much better than that.

That looks like a horrible midfield. I don't but this 4-3-3 is the best tactic either. There is something called regression to the mean. This will kick in over the season and 3-4-3 will, like always, end up being the best formation.

I can see the love for premium defenders dying out soon in favor of budget options and more money in midfield, just like the old times. I know defenders get plenty more BAPS this year but they have to get a clean sheet to do it and they are impossible to predict.

I'm quite pleased with my returns from my budget defenders. 18 between the 3 of them. My one expensive one – 2 from Terry – although it was a toughish fixture.

No. There is more chance a well known high scoring midfielder will get points from an assist or a goal than predicting a team will keep a clean sheet.

IMO he was always set to be benched vs Everton after 2 full international games (one on Ukraine) and CL starting this midweek.
He also was a first one to come when they desperately needed a goal.
I think, of not injured, he'll start vs Fulham. They need his experience, creativity and class after lose vs EVE

Why does everyone keep calling players beasts?

Toure beast Benteke beast Ankho beast

Just three of the players called a beast on here today.

People are just parrots repeating the same thing all the time.

Plus they don't say anything else contributory. Just a post saying "Benteke's a beast"

      I F'ckin LOVE a Beast.

Toure aint a beast, for me. He is too nice, and too cultured.

A beast is someone who is raw, physically dominant and exceptionally aggressive in their playing style. Mark Hughes was a beast. Benteke is a beast. How anyone can draw a racial argument from this is beyond me.

My team is doing quite bad this year, outside 1M mark. Off to a bad start, sure, but still..

How long should one wait before it turns? Cout+Mirallas done nothing for 4 games, Nolan is only scoring at home. Wally is alright. Soldado+Lambs doesn't score and in defence Toure isn't nailed on any more.

All this while ml leader wc:d and scored a whopping 79 pts this last GW, leaving a 100+ pts for me to catch up. Well, the season is long 🙂
