Jonjo Shelvey has a night of mixed emotions after playing a part in all four goals in last night’s 2-2 draw at the Liberty. Daniel Sturridge scores for the fourth straight game, Michu opens his account for the season and Victor Moses arrives on Fantasy radars after grabbing a goal on his debut for the visitors:

Sturridge Returns to Notch Again
The thigh injury that stopped him turning out for England failed to prevent Liverpool’s main man from lasting the full 90 minutes for the Reds last night. Sturridge’s deadly eye for goal shows little sign of abating after he pounced on a woeful Jonjo Shelvey backpass to score for the four league game in a row and take his tally to six strikes in five appearances this term for Brendan Rodgers’ side. With the threat of injury hanging over him during the international break, Sturridge increased just 0.1 in price in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game but the bandwagon can be expected to pick up pace after last night’s goal. His injury record at Chelsea and, on occasion in the latter half of last term with Liverpool, suggests Sturridge is almost always going to have that doubt hanging over him but, as he continues to prove, keeping the Fantasy faith more than pays dividend. With Sturridge, Olivier Giroud and Christian Benteke all notching four goals apiece already around the 9.0 mark, the case for going without Robin Van Persie has, so far, been proven a strong one.

Michu Breaks His Duck
Having failed to find the net in the first three fixtures, Swansea’s talisman suffered a price drop last week as Fantasy owners looked for alternatives. Michu’s equaliser not only denied Liverpool the points but served a reminder of his goal-getting abilities for the Swans as they edge towards a kinder run of matches. With an assist in the Gameweek 3 encounter against West Brom, the Spaniard is finally starting to hint at the form which made him such a Fantasy sensation last time out and with new boy Wilfried Bony subbed off with a knock, Michu may be forced into a forward role for the weekend trip to Palace. Once the Gameweek 6 showdown against Arsenal is out of the way, a schedule that reads (sou, SUN, WHM, car, STO, ful) will surely hand him the platform to further his returns.

Reds Clean Sheet Run Ends
Liverpool arrived at the Liberty as the last side yet to concede but a number of injuries in defence meant Rodgers was able to name just one of the back-four that started the first couple of Gameweeks. With Glen Johnson already ruled out and Kolo Toure nursing his way back to full fitness after a groin problem, the visitors were dealt a further blow after Daniel Agger was also sidelined due to a bizarre accident – new boy Mamadou Sakho slotted in alongside Martin Skrtel, with Andre Wisdom handed the right-back berth. After the game, though, Rodgers admitted the Dane is still a real doubt for the weekend’s Anfield encounter with Southampton, though talked up the prospects of Sakho after his debut display:

“It’s too early to say whether Daniel will be fit for Saturday (at home to Southampton). He had a real freak incident in the gym. Just before he was coming out to train, he overstretched trying to prevent a dumbbell falling on his foot. He has overstretched and yanked his side. We are waiting to see if that settles down over the next few days. If it doesn’t, we have got ample replacements. That is why we brought in extra players. Sakho did very well. He has played a lot over pre-season but he has come back in and done very well. I thought he was excellent and assured. Once he gets used to working with us, he will improve.”

Moses On the Radar
After signing the winger on loan from Chelsea, Brendan Rodgers was quick to reveal Moses’ ability to produce on the left would allow him to shift Philippe Coutinho into a central position. Many had anticipated a gradual introduction to the first-team but the Liverpool boss handed the Nigerian international an instant chance to impress and Moses wasted little time in serving up a debut goal, cutting inside from the flank to lash home past Michel Vorm after another woeful Shelvey pass went astray. With the above-mentioned run of fixtures in mind, Fantasy managers will be keen to add to their Liverpool contingent and Moses – at just 6.2 in FPL – looks a real contender already; Coutinho owners will be hoping he can shake off the shoulder complaint that forced him off just before the hour mark but those without the Brazilian will be eyeing up Moses as a strong mid-price option over the next few matches.

Following the game, Rodgers talked up Moses’ display and also rued Coutinho’s withdrawal before revealing it’s too early to ascertain the extent of his problem:

“I had a feeling with Victor coming here. When I was manager here, he always played well against us. He scored here and also scored for Chelsea here. I just had a feeling about him and his goal was very good….We had fluency and quality. But when Coutinho went off, we probably lost that connection between our midfield and forwards. He will have a wee scan. It’s his shoulder. He’s very sore in the changing room, and we’re hoping it will only be bruising.”

Eventful Evening for Shelvey
The former Liverpool midfielder will forever be associated with last night’s match after playing a part in all four goals in the 2-2 draw. Despite a couple of poor passes allowing Sturridge and Victor Moses the chance to notch for the visitors, Shelvey did, nonetheless, grab a goal, assist and maximum FPL bonus points to deliver a 12 point return for the hosts. Although Laudrup has plenty of midfield options available after a summer of squad restructuring, Shelvey remains a key player for the Welsh outfit and has started all four league games. Priced at just 5.5 in FPL, a possible absence for Bony could see him shifted into the role in “the hole” if Michu is moved forward and offer Pablo Hernandez owners a straight swap amongst the Swans midfield, after the Spaniard was ruled out with a hamstring problem last night; a bitter blow for the 180,000+ who drafted him in over the international break.

After the game, Shelvey was praised by his manager after recovering from his first-half display to tee up Michu’s equaliser:

“When you do that you go from heaven to hell in just a couple of minutes, scoring a goal in a very important game for you after two minutes but then you give away a goal – and another one with a ball lost. I told him [at half-time] ‘there are still 45 minutes, you have to learn from this and pull yourself together’, and I think he did great. He will become stronger out of this, his reaction in the second half was excellent.”

Afternoon all just a quick post calling for honesty:

Which of you were bigging up these fpl failures pre-season - Cornelius, Van Wolfswinkel, Altidore, Bony (to an extent), Kone, Mannone, Kim, Koren, Aluko, Coutinho (to an extent), Aspas (massive fail), Negredo (manager didn't spend 20m to bench him), Zaha, Kagawa, Snodgrass, Rodriguez, Sneiderlin, Pozuelo, Anelka (LOL), Jarvis, Rat, West Brom team?

The funny thing is all of these were in pre-season rmt's and I wonder how many survived the first wc cull? Does this mean we shouldn't be punting on unknowns to give ourselves the best chance of protecting a wc until it could be used in either a planned move to get the most points or when it might be needed due to dire circumstances?

Seriously now, all those who were promoting these failboats hands up and do the walk of shame or justify your selection now with hindsight.

Snodgrass probably should not be on the list as we know he is an inconsistent type of player who will get a goal and assist in a game due to his set pieces but you have to hold for a long run of twos and threes first.

Rat was a good punt too tbf imo but there was always the chance he would be eased into things. I just thought he was overpriced with Collins at 4.5m

And tbf Aluko has looked a little better than I thought he would. I remember him at Aberdeen and he was average at best. I really didn't think he would have enough quality to step up to epl level.

Good spot Corky, I forgot Brayford and Lukaku.

Fell for Lukaku myself and like most I still can't believe he is not preferred to the numpties Chelsea have up front now. Lukaku should do ok now with Everton I reckon.

Brayford almost sucked me in but I went Chester last minute as my 4.0m def and damn lucky escape it was.

It was a penalty though, and nobody knew he'd be on them. Doubt anyone wants Gayle now. Most of those have played too. Negredo has scored more than Gayle. Snodgrass and Coutinho both had logic to their buys. Kim did too. There's a difference between pre season bandwagon fails and players that are good but just haven't produced yet. Agree with most of the others

Yeah fair points Demi I was more going for punt fails but included a few others due to claims made on their behalf by people (Negredo will definitely start as they paid so much money for him etc).

As for Snodgrass I did say in reply to KOL that he probably shouldn't be on the list as he is very inconsistent and this was known so with his set pieces he should do ok in time.

Coutinho is just way overpriced for me. I can never see him as a big hitter unless he improves dramatically. He had a good run last year as an unknown when Liverpool were playing with no pressure (not retreating back trying to hold what they have in the second half of games as they have been doing this season).

Kim was always just a cheapie punt and at least he plays I guess but I never got the hype again so he had to be included as he has not lived up to what people thought he would.

I'd still back Gayle to be one of the top value players in the game but I don't think you can waste a fwd slot as they are too valuable with the new bp system favoring fwds over mids heavily.

Its a bit early to call all of them failboats. I think Bony and Negredo will have come good by the end of the season. Just a bad idea to start with them.

I got caught with Coutinho and Mannone.

People are mentioning Lukaku too. Having him in your team at the start of the season was the correct thing to do, if only to protect yourself. If he was given the time he could've owned that gameweek. Even still, he'll probably finish top 5 in the strikers points with the service he's going to get at Everton.

I think we were caught out by the team balance theory. This insisted that there should be a nice mix of budget, mid priced and expensive players. Unfortunately none of the mid priced players came through and even now its hard to decide who to get in that price category. I do believe that Mirralas, Snodgrass and JRod were thus good picks at the time. JRod was a little unfortunate as Saints bought a new striker and Snoddy started off with an injury. Mirralas statistically has looked good but has been unlucky. I stand by those picks and I had all of them myself, they were good picks at the time if you were after good team balance.

Yeah mirrallas, snodgrass and JRod were not the worst tbf as at least we had some idea what they were capable of. I did think JRod was not nailed but at the price there wasn't much better to go for.

I think some of the foreign imports are definitely the biggest failures on the list.

    Really require suggestions
All right. So according to the advices given here by all of you here is my plan for the next three GW(5-7).
    1) Nolan to B.Arfa this week using FT.
Soldado to Giroud for GW 6
and Coleman to a 6-6.5 def for GW 7.(Already have Baines and dont like to take a hit for a defender)

    or
    2) Save the FT this week.Give Nolan one last chance.

Nolan to Eriksen or < =8.5 mid and Soldado to Lukaku
    in GW 6
    Coleman to 6 -6.5m def for GW7.

Would be so relieved if i could get a solution to this.

    Thanks in advance!

I raised this point before but just coming back to it after the game last night. Agger and Sakho are left footed, Toure and Skrtel are right footed, a very simplistic view I know. I am thinking BR may not play Agger and Sakho together, its either one of them to play on the left side and one of Toure and Skrtel to play on the right.

We all know Agger's injury record and how he came close to leaving so I wouldn't be surprised if Liverpool spent that much money on a backup player who will develop into a starter over the next few years.

I am not saying he is going to be backup forever. Between the cups and Aggers injuries he will still get a fair few games.

I don't think Sakho would come from CL-playing PSG to play second fiddle to Daniel Agger.

He wasn't going to be playing CL football and while at PSG he was never likely to be giving the chance to develop. They spent a fortune on a 19 year old Brazilian for a fortune which pretty much told Sakho what they think of him.

Don't be silly, he's our marquee signing. He'll be in the team in a few weeks, great competition, and nice depth in the squad for cups and a long campaign ahead.
Sakho and Agger to battle out one place and Skrtel n Toure for the other.
Don't forget we have 2 or 3 players for each position.

This. Too simplistic, having left and right footed centre backs isn't nonsensical but not so important that we're going to bench our best defender and/or our marquee signing.

This is kind of my point. There is a good chance so I would think it is wish planning on signing a good youngster (albeit and expensive one) who they can develop and be ready to step in for Agger.

I think people going for Eriksen, are chasing last weeks points. Lamela was never guaranteed to start last week, but he got minutes at the end of the last and should start this week, and therefore will probably get points.

I just don't see why no one would want Michu, Swansea fixture are about to go bang and he is proven, nailed on and sometimes ends up playing striker. Lamela on the other hand has just arrived doesn't speak the lingo, might take a few weeks to adapt and plays in a system with soldado as a focal point. Not saying he won't be a good pick in a few weeks, just not sure he is now.

I'd do Nani -> HBA but I was never in the Nani camp in the first place so I'm probably naturally biased against him. Rodgers was talking up Sakho, I'd be tempted to stick, particularly as you have three marquee defenders, with Chambers and Chester. By the way, expect Chambers to get very few games now that Clyne is fully fit.

      Hey Mindless.

Im also a Nani punter. I have got HBA this week but I have kept Nani, I have a feeling he will play well this gw, he may not score points but that could set him up for game time over the next few. I transferred him in for a few weeks to give him a chance.

If I were you I would save the FT...

    Thinking about wild carding:

    Migs Boruc
    Vidic Zab Vertonghen Fonte/Shaw Chester
Walcott Ramsey Ben Arfa Whittingham Moses
    Sturridge Benteke Giroud

Rooney to come in for Benteke after City game

      Szeczney Boruc
      Zab Shaw Chester Toure Baker
Snodgrass Walcott Wittingham Ben Arfa Routledge
      RVP Benteke Giroud

This was after -8 hit for Koren->Whittingham, Mirallas ->Ben Arfa and Connolly->Chester

      Ramsey, Whittingham, Moses

seems to me like you are chasing fella

Ramsey is no doubt a great player but how many time do you think he will score like that? Can't argue that he is a good option at that price though.

I have Sturridge so will stay away from Moses until I do Sturridge > Rooney GW6
