Leighton Baines picks up his first attacking returns of the season as Everton remain the last unbeaten side in the English top-flight. Robbie Brady vaults to the top of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) midfield standings after steering Hull to victory at Newcastle, while Christian Benteke owners face an anxious wait after he is subbed off during Villa’s win at Norwich:

The Game Changer

Leighton Baines’ pair of free-kicks in Everton’s superb comeback win at West Ham not only highlights the Toffees flourishing form under Roberto Martinez, it takes the left-back to the top of the overall FPL standings this evening.

Prior to this afternoon’s game, Baines – despite failing to score or assist in his first four appearances – had picked up more bonus points than any backline option, with his game looking ideal for the new Bonus Points System scoring matrix. Previously looked upon as a luxury commodity for our defences, Baines is looking cheap at the price of 7.5 right now in FPL and today’s double merely underlines his potential for the season ahead. With Seamus Coleman flourishing as a mid-price option, there’s even a case for acquiring both for our defence, given their level of returns thus far.

With home games against Newcastle and Hull in the next three, the chances of instant returns seem highly possible as Baines looks to maintain the form that has earned him 42 points in the first five Gameweeks of the FPL – if he continues in the same vein, he could well be on course to better his previous best tally of 178 points.

After the game, Baines admitted a comment from a midfield team-mate spurred him on to today’s brace:

“It was a great feeling to get that, especially because of the position of the game. Before the game Leon Osman said he’d taken me out of his fantasy team because I’d not scored enough goals, so I put that right today.”

The Underused

Rated as doubtful heading into today’s trip to Newcastle, Robbie Brady was cast aside by over 23,000 FPL owners as midfields were reassembled in a hectic week of trading. The Hull man recovered to play a starring role in a somewhat unexpected win at St James’ Park and with a goal and assist to his name, he has also picked up a couple of bonus points. This takes Brady to 29 points – joint-top scoring midfielder in the game heading into tomorrow’s four matches – and, with back-to-back home clashes against West Ham and Villa to follow, heavy investment can be expected in the 5.1 priced player, who currently has just 6% ownership so far.

Goals in back-to-back games had earned Hatem Ben Arfa an astounding 420,000 new owners ahead of this afternoon’s home games with Hull. While the Frenchman failed to replicate his recent form and delivered no more than a blank, it was team-mate and compatriot Loic Remy who supplied the end product for the Magpies in a surprise 3-2 home loss.

Handed his first full 90 minutes by Alan Pardew, Remy ran riot on the left of the front three and notched both the hosts’ goals to suggest he will be equally crucial for the Tyneside team over the season ahead. Coming in at just 7.4, the on-loan forward has an ownership of just 0.7% right now but with Ben Arfa listed as a midfielder, Remy is likely to remain off most Fantasy radars, ensuring he continues as a differential option over the coming weeks.

The Selection Poser

Christian Benteke’s early withdrawal during the lunchtime opener at Norwich set the tone for what has been a miserable Saturday for most. The Villa frontman arrived at Carrow Road with four goals in as many matches but limped out of the proceedings with a hip injury before the half-hour mark.

Currently sitting with a 35.5% ownership in the FPL game, a potential period of absence for Benteke will have a significant effect in a market that has already proven particularly volatile this term. After the game, Paul Lambert was still uncertain as to whether his star striker will face time on the sidelines, with Benteke set to be assessed in the next couple of days:

“Christian slipped and the medical team are telling me it’s his hip flexor. Hopefully it’s not too bad. I think he’s not too bad. We’ll see how he is, but I’m delighted for Libor to score his first goal. That’s why we bought him, in case Christian got an injury.”

With the likes of United, Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool and Swansea all facing favourable fixtures over the next few matches, Benteke owners may already be considering an exit strategy. Villa square up to City, Chelsea and Everton in the next four and with Wayne Rooney offering a real in-form option to Robin Van Persie for United and Luis Suarez now free from suspension and available for next week’s trip to Sunderland, there’s a couple of real differentials on offer for those considering a swap.

On the other end of the budget bracket, James Chester’s owners were dealt a bitter blow earlier this afternoon. The 4.0 priced Hull centre-half has played every minute of the season thus far but has been ruled out for four to six weeks by Steve Bruce, forcing his 3% of FPL to reconsider their cheap defensive options in light of this afternoon’s setback.

    What other move would you make?

    So this GW is worst of the worst so far - 8 pts from 5 so far. Somehow fortunately I have 2 FTs in my hand. Which is looking the best to you to do:

    A. Lampard & Snodgrass ---> Michu & Barkley
    B. Lampard & Snodgrass ---> Eriksen & Moses
    C. Silva & Soldado ---> Eriksen & Rooney
    D. Silva & Snodgrass ---> Michu & Moses / Barkley

    ?

    Do you think that Valencia and Evra/Rafael/Vidic/Ferdinand may be enough United cover for the next few games? I have a front line of Giroud, Sturridge, and Soldado and I'm not sure Rooney is a much better option than any of these guys...

      Why does everyone here go on about cover??!!? Just pick the best bloody players.

      Def don't waste a transfer getting Rooney in for any of your current 3 strikers.

      (And how does having Valencia and a MUN defender have anything with your decision to get Rooney?)

      LMAO I forgot about the 3 players per team rule and thought you meant all 5 for a minute! Valencia + Evra is just enough to be called coverage imo.

      Think Eriksen + Rooney is FAR better than Soldado + Valencia though, even if more expensive.

      he is really tempting, especially for me. He will always be the front man and we all know his potential. I only have 10mil to spend if Benteke is out and i already have Giroud and Soldado. I am not keen on Sturridge with Suarez back, Lukaku isn't nailed on as yet, Eto no, Torres no, Bony meh, Lambert is playing deep, Osvaldo hasn't scored yet.

      Once Benteke is out i think he is in

    Repost

    ‘Replacing Bentekkers’
    Benteke went off injured today, as I’m sure most of you know. It looks quite serious so certainly needs a transfer out. Finding the right forward to so important this year as there seems to be a bit of a lack of goals. Here are some transfer options:

    Giroud – We all know about Giroud’s fantastic start to the season – a goal in every game. With home clashes with Norwich, Southampton and Hull before gameweek 15 as well as trips to West Brom, Palace and Cardiff he looks very strong. With the addition of Ozil to the squad goals may come even easier for Giroud and at 9.1 is even cheaper than Benteke so gives you that extra 0.2 to spend.

    Sturridge – Sturridge could to boast about the same record as Giroud until the 1-0 loss to Southampton today. He has however already scored four times this season. Coutinho absence made Liverpool look a little lacklustre today but Suarez’s return could soon fix this. Much like Giroud his fixtures are appealing, playing only 2 of the current top 9 before gameweek 15. However Sturridge costs 0.1 more so if you are on a budget this could be a difficult option.

    Soldado – Soldado hasn’t had a FANTASTIC start to the season but is settling into the league. He is very popular on here. He is yet to establish himself as the prolific goalscorer he was in the Liga BBVA but this could well come in time. He has good service from the likes of new signings Eriksen and Lamela but encounters with Chelsea, Everton, City and United before gameweek 15 may well deter some. One of the more pricey options at 9.7 he will too set you back. Is he really worth that extra cash?

    Eto’o – Incredibly wasteful in his first 2 games. However there is little competition for his place with the mighty Lukaku at Everton and Torres and Ba misfiring he should keep his place. If he quickly manages to start hitting the target he could have a bag-full of goals. Only Man City looks threatening in the near future although Chelsea have been unpredictable this season. At only 9.0 he should be ‘gettable’ for all and I think could be a serious contender.

    Lukaku – The Belgian Beast is back. Everton looked a completely different team when he came on and Martinez would be a fool not to start him. His willingness to score showed as he went in for a dangerous goal this afternoon which he scored to get off the mark. However with City, United, Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal in the nearish future he might struggle a little as I don’t think he is as fixture proof as Benteke. His price is a mere 7.4 which would give you around 2.0 to upgrade elsewhere – an opportunity not to be laughed at!

    RVP – Well, we all know about him. Hefty price, proven goal scorer. Nowt more to say.

    Rooney – Rooney seems to have finally hit form. Last year I remember him having a purple patch last year (when I was fortunate to have him) and he could be about to hit one of these again. He has fully recovered from his little head injury. He might provide a cheaper route into the Man United attack although at 10.5 will still set you back more than Benteke did.

    Suarez – HE IS BACK. My worst nightmere last season as my opponent had him and I didn’t. As I mentioned earlier with Coutinho out Suarez may be looked to for creativity which we all know he has. He has nice fixtures, and a lot to prove after his mischief. A lot of people will already have Sturridge though so Suarez may be too much Liverpool force. He is also at 10.9 which if pricey and Sturridge is a lot cheaper option. Personally I will not be going there. However if you think you can stomach that mouthful of a price go ahead .

    PUNT

    Kozak – Another cheaper option, even more so than Lukaku at 6.5 he will be Villa’s main threat up front and will be playing in the target man roll Benteke fulfilled. He scored today as a replacement for Benteke so has started well. He cost Villa £7 million so has quite a lot to prove, the same price as Benteke. Villa immediately face City with Tottenham and Everton soon after. I wouldn’t have thought twice about playing Benteke against these clubs but an unproven in the league – I’m not so sure. Kozak is too much of a punt for even me but those who could do with the change could really benefit.

    Hope this helps!

Having Brady , sessesgon today it's laid dividends and usually always does mixed with the big hitters. IMO it's the blance of cheapies and expensive that will win in the end. One player that I saw play today has no interest at all (0%) in terms of transfers in and believe me this guy is better than anyone mentioned in the bandwagon options that we tend to read and follow here. Keep searching guys and you will discover a little gem!! Good luck

    Negredo + Lampard to HBA + Rooney (-4)

    Pull the trigger? Been planning these trades for awhile but price changes both ways are going to force my hand.

    It was cringe worthy seeing Lukaku play on MOTD. I would be more than happy to have him at United for a year if we line up like this:

    ...............Defence........
    ..........Fellaini/Carrick
    Valencia.....Rooney.......Kagawa/Nani/Young
    .............RVP & Lukaku

    That's right....to accommodate Lukaku I would be happy to only have 1 CM and possibly play Kagawa on the left (much better as a CAM). What in the world is wrong with the Chelsea managers!?

    Benteke and RVP to Suarez and Rooney? Also leaves me with enough money to get in Michu and Oscar for Hazard and Moses later

    Sturridge out for suarez.. doubt I really need to "wait and see" for suarez. We all know what he can do. And after liverpools lost and my shocking gameweek I dont think there could b a player more welcomed into my side. What does everyone think about this transfer?
