Leighton Baines picks up his first attacking returns of the season as Everton remain the last unbeaten side in the English top-flight. Robbie Brady vaults to the top of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) midfield standings after steering Hull to victory at Newcastle, while Christian Benteke owners face an anxious wait after he is subbed off during Villa’s win at Norwich:

The Game Changer

Leighton Baines’ pair of free-kicks in Everton’s superb comeback win at West Ham not only highlights the Toffees flourishing form under Roberto Martinez, it takes the left-back to the top of the overall FPL standings this evening.

Prior to this afternoon’s game, Baines – despite failing to score or assist in his first four appearances – had picked up more bonus points than any backline option, with his game looking ideal for the new Bonus Points System scoring matrix. Previously looked upon as a luxury commodity for our defences, Baines is looking cheap at the price of 7.5 right now in FPL and today’s double merely underlines his potential for the season ahead. With Seamus Coleman flourishing as a mid-price option, there’s even a case for acquiring both for our defence, given their level of returns thus far.

With home games against Newcastle and Hull in the next three, the chances of instant returns seem highly possible as Baines looks to maintain the form that has earned him 42 points in the first five Gameweeks of the FPL – if he continues in the same vein, he could well be on course to better his previous best tally of 178 points.

After the game, Baines admitted a comment from a midfield team-mate spurred him on to today’s brace:

“It was a great feeling to get that, especially because of the position of the game. Before the game Leon Osman said he’d taken me out of his fantasy team because I’d not scored enough goals, so I put that right today.”

The Underused

Rated as doubtful heading into today’s trip to Newcastle, Robbie Brady was cast aside by over 23,000 FPL owners as midfields were reassembled in a hectic week of trading. The Hull man recovered to play a starring role in a somewhat unexpected win at St James’ Park and with a goal and assist to his name, he has also picked up a couple of bonus points. This takes Brady to 29 points – joint-top scoring midfielder in the game heading into tomorrow’s four matches – and, with back-to-back home clashes against West Ham and Villa to follow, heavy investment can be expected in the 5.1 priced player, who currently has just 6% ownership so far.

Goals in back-to-back games had earned Hatem Ben Arfa an astounding 420,000 new owners ahead of this afternoon’s home games with Hull. While the Frenchman failed to replicate his recent form and delivered no more than a blank, it was team-mate and compatriot Loic Remy who supplied the end product for the Magpies in a surprise 3-2 home loss.

Handed his first full 90 minutes by Alan Pardew, Remy ran riot on the left of the front three and notched both the hosts’ goals to suggest he will be equally crucial for the Tyneside team over the season ahead. Coming in at just 7.4, the on-loan forward has an ownership of just 0.7% right now but with Ben Arfa listed as a midfielder, Remy is likely to remain off most Fantasy radars, ensuring he continues as a differential option over the coming weeks.

The Selection Poser

Christian Benteke’s early withdrawal during the lunchtime opener at Norwich set the tone for what has been a miserable Saturday for most. The Villa frontman arrived at Carrow Road with four goals in as many matches but limped out of the proceedings with a hip injury before the half-hour mark.

Currently sitting with a 35.5% ownership in the FPL game, a potential period of absence for Benteke will have a significant effect in a market that has already proven particularly volatile this term. After the game, Paul Lambert was still uncertain as to whether his star striker will face time on the sidelines, with Benteke set to be assessed in the next couple of days:

“Christian slipped and the medical team are telling me it’s his hip flexor. Hopefully it’s not too bad. I think he’s not too bad. We’ll see how he is, but I’m delighted for Libor to score his first goal. That’s why we bought him, in case Christian got an injury.”

With the likes of United, Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool and Swansea all facing favourable fixtures over the next few matches, Benteke owners may already be considering an exit strategy. Villa square up to City, Chelsea and Everton in the next four and with Wayne Rooney offering a real in-form option to Robin Van Persie for United and Luis Suarez now free from suspension and available for next week’s trip to Sunderland, there’s a couple of real differentials on offer for those considering a swap.

On the other end of the budget bracket, James Chester’s owners were dealt a bitter blow earlier this afternoon. The 4.0 priced Hull centre-half has played every minute of the season thus far but has been ruled out for four to six weeks by Steve Bruce, forcing his 3% of FPL to reconsider their cheap defensive options in light of this afternoon’s setback.

Beric above has a good point. But if you have to choose between the two, I think Lambert should be the pick: 1) he is nailed-on and the focal point of a useful Saints offense, 2) Lambert takes direct free kicks, 3) he is unlucky to not have scored from open play yet this season (has great shots stats and hit the post a couple of times). If you look at their stats from last year, Lukaku and Lambert had similar prices and output but the latter is in a far more reliable position to replicate/improve that performance.

I agree with you that Saints has a options in Rod and Os being able to play center forward as well. However I think Lambert is far superior to the other two in terms of hold-up play and bringing teammates into play. Barring occasional rest, I think Os and Rod are going to compete with Lallana and Ramirez for the three attacking midfielder roles just off Lambert.

I'm not saying hes a bad pick, hes a good pick...but you only have 3 srikers and all/the vast majority of the most desirable players right now are strikers, you need to have three of the best,,,studge/benteks/girooo/rvp...rooney...neggrefo and others. certainly not lambwer or lukaku

Lukaku looks like a decent option. Everton has been whipping crosses into the box like crazy, and the only man on the team capable of consistently putting those away is Lukaku. The only trouble is that loan players have a tendency to get played less.

The big question for many this week will be Chester

    1) Leave to rot on bench (for a month?)

I think you're well covered in defence, with 4 playing defenders. Wouldn't use a transfer on Chester imo - Hull don't really look like keeping a clean sheet and at that price, not much attacking threat.

Unless it's going to be a big upgrade from a 4.0 to >5.0, i'd wait.

I'm considering doing Barfa & Chester > Brady & Vidic/Evra but it doesn't really feel worth -4pts and working Suarez into my team will be more of a priority. I think having Coleman Davies Walker and Fonte leaves me with enough def coverage to be alright with Chester propping up the bench though

    B) Vertonghen, Baines & Bony (already have Michu, Coleman & Barkley)

I don't expect a mountain of goals out of him, but he's easily in the top 3 most technically skilled players in the side and he's much stronger than Coutinho and LFC's other wingers. He's the one who I expect to most often be finishing his runs and playing crosses in to Sturridge, Suarez, Gerrard et. al.

I'm also deliberately going very thin in midfield until someone emerges as a consistent performer. After Michu, Moses is my highest priced mid (although I'm looking very hard at Oscar after Jose's comments this week and the goal today).

He may be technically gifted, but he's had a shambles of a first two games for Pool. The goal against Swansea was very flattering but other than that he's been very unimpressive. That said, it's only his first two games and he hasn't had much first team football in the last 12 months so I'm sure as he settles in he'll perform more consistently. Don't expect much from him until Xmas though

Current Midfield: Walcott - Michu - Eriksen - Nolan - Yacob.

Need to ship Kevin Nolan out after GW 6. Are there any viable sub 7.5 million MIDs with good fixtures from GW 7 onwards? Thinking

    A) Lallana

    B) Brady. Both with decent home fixtures but terrible away games.

    C) Mirallas. NEW - mci - HUL - avl

Hernandez if fit. Moses. Stoke have 2-3 good fixtures, Adams might be worth a punt. Valencia.

      and the above.

Moses has three good home fixtures from week 7. Next best acc to Watchlist is Valencia then Walters but wouldn't go near either of them.

Pablo if fit but keep an eye on Pozualo at SWN to see if makes the team.

    Which do you prefer?

    Baines, Vidic, Lovren & Ramsey

    OR

    Coleman, Ferdinand, Clyne & Walcott

Given the way the BPS system continues to favour these defenders, I might find myself losing Walcott...

Well, I have a week to decide...

I do like having more balance in the team and an extra big hitter in midfield... I'm not too keen on all these extra funds at the back, even though the signs are there that it could be a viable strategy... I reckon it just leaves you with more problems that it solves, for example having 2-3 5-6 mids which I will have to decide who to play and when...

After that they're tough though. I guess Villa will be a good fixture if they are still Benteke-less. It would require taking Zabaleta or Enrique out and a hit. I'm almost assuredly going to have to pay more in 6-7 weeks though.

Was there any particular reason Enrique didn't start? Just a stupid tactical decision by Rodgers? I guess he thought 4 center backs would neutralize Lambert and Osvaldo?

Surely this game is won playing probablities, you're just trying to get the most likely suspects all the time.....no matter how bad you might be doing now, seeking differentials is not the way o play. Right now strikers are the best bets, sturridge, benteke, giroud, rvp, soldado, negredo, agueueo, rooney...midield is not so clear and defence is always about spending the absolute minimum, heed my words

Spending the absolute minimum on defense is foolish. It's possible to have the 3 best strikers, 4 premium defenders, Migs, and 3 quality midfielders with decent fixtures every week.

Benteke -> Sturridge is a pretty obvious move if Benteke's injury proves serious, right? I wanted to avoid Sturridge until after Suarez was back but I don't think there are any other good options. I have exactly 9.4 to spend.

I still feel Ben Arfa is a season keeper. Newcastle could score more goals than last season and Ben Arfa is likely to be involved in many of them.

But he is still very much a punt so wouldn't recommend having players like Eriksen, Moses, Valencia....along with him. He is best paired with regulars like Walcott, Michu, Oscar atm. I feel he could be this season's Fellaini, playing OOP in a 4-3-3 formation.

I could of course be wrong, but there's no doubti
