Leighton Baines picks up his first attacking returns of the season as Everton remain the last unbeaten side in the English top-flight. Robbie Brady vaults to the top of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) midfield standings after steering Hull to victory at Newcastle, while Christian Benteke owners face an anxious wait after he is subbed off during Villa’s win at Norwich:

The Game Changer

Leighton Baines’ pair of free-kicks in Everton’s superb comeback win at West Ham not only highlights the Toffees flourishing form under Roberto Martinez, it takes the left-back to the top of the overall FPL standings this evening.

Prior to this afternoon’s game, Baines – despite failing to score or assist in his first four appearances – had picked up more bonus points than any backline option, with his game looking ideal for the new Bonus Points System scoring matrix. Previously looked upon as a luxury commodity for our defences, Baines is looking cheap at the price of 7.5 right now in FPL and today’s double merely underlines his potential for the season ahead. With Seamus Coleman flourishing as a mid-price option, there’s even a case for acquiring both for our defence, given their level of returns thus far.

With home games against Newcastle and Hull in the next three, the chances of instant returns seem highly possible as Baines looks to maintain the form that has earned him 42 points in the first five Gameweeks of the FPL – if he continues in the same vein, he could well be on course to better his previous best tally of 178 points.

After the game, Baines admitted a comment from a midfield team-mate spurred him on to today’s brace:

“It was a great feeling to get that, especially because of the position of the game. Before the game Leon Osman said he’d taken me out of his fantasy team because I’d not scored enough goals, so I put that right today.”

The Underused

Rated as doubtful heading into today’s trip to Newcastle, Robbie Brady was cast aside by over 23,000 FPL owners as midfields were reassembled in a hectic week of trading. The Hull man recovered to play a starring role in a somewhat unexpected win at St James’ Park and with a goal and assist to his name, he has also picked up a couple of bonus points. This takes Brady to 29 points – joint-top scoring midfielder in the game heading into tomorrow’s four matches – and, with back-to-back home clashes against West Ham and Villa to follow, heavy investment can be expected in the 5.1 priced player, who currently has just 6% ownership so far.

Goals in back-to-back games had earned Hatem Ben Arfa an astounding 420,000 new owners ahead of this afternoon’s home games with Hull. While the Frenchman failed to replicate his recent form and delivered no more than a blank, it was team-mate and compatriot Loic Remy who supplied the end product for the Magpies in a surprise 3-2 home loss.

Handed his first full 90 minutes by Alan Pardew, Remy ran riot on the left of the front three and notched both the hosts’ goals to suggest he will be equally crucial for the Tyneside team over the season ahead. Coming in at just 7.4, the on-loan forward has an ownership of just 0.7% right now but with Ben Arfa listed as a midfielder, Remy is likely to remain off most Fantasy radars, ensuring he continues as a differential option over the coming weeks.

The Selection Poser

Christian Benteke’s early withdrawal during the lunchtime opener at Norwich set the tone for what has been a miserable Saturday for most. The Villa frontman arrived at Carrow Road with four goals in as many matches but limped out of the proceedings with a hip injury before the half-hour mark.

Currently sitting with a 35.5% ownership in the FPL game, a potential period of absence for Benteke will have a significant effect in a market that has already proven particularly volatile this term. After the game, Paul Lambert was still uncertain as to whether his star striker will face time on the sidelines, with Benteke set to be assessed in the next couple of days:

“Christian slipped and the medical team are telling me it’s his hip flexor. Hopefully it’s not too bad. I think he’s not too bad. We’ll see how he is, but I’m delighted for Libor to score his first goal. That’s why we bought him, in case Christian got an injury.”

With the likes of United, Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool and Swansea all facing favourable fixtures over the next few matches, Benteke owners may already be considering an exit strategy. Villa square up to City, Chelsea and Everton in the next four and with Wayne Rooney offering a real in-form option to Robin Van Persie for United and Luis Suarez now free from suspension and available for next week’s trip to Sunderland, there’s a couple of real differentials on offer for those considering a swap.

On the other end of the budget bracket, James Chester’s owners were dealt a bitter blow earlier this afternoon. The 4.0 priced Hull centre-half has played every minute of the season thus far but has been ruled out for four to six weeks by Steve Bruce, forcing his 3% of FPL to reconsider their cheap defensive options in light of this afternoon’s setback.

Thinking the same. Might have to take a 4 point hit to do it, but think he's worth it. Playing in a very strong looking Everton team and with a point to prove. Any danger of rotation though?

Not much risk of rotation per se, because he's so much better than Jelly and Kone. But I wouldn't be all that surprised if he's still being eased in off the bench for another week or two. Maybe it is wisest to wait until after mci, I hate to be late to the party though.

I'm pretty pleased actually, even though my Ben Arfa (C) failed (also devastating as a Newcastle fan). 27 pts with 6 (RvP, Soldado, Giroud, Walcott, Koscielnu and Vidic) to play.

Got 2 FT, 0.2 in the bank.

    GK: Mignolet (Harper)
DEF: Vidic, Shaw, Koscielny (Chester**) (Baker)
MID: Walcott, Lampard**, Ben Arfa, Brady (Ward-Prowse)
    ATT: RvP, Soldado, Giroud

    1) Lampard being used a sub for the last two weeks, I think it is just about time to ship him out for someone of equivalent value who will play. Only problem is, while the obvious option is Eriksen, they are playing Chelsea next week, making that transfer pretty pointless.

    2) Chester getting injured is a bit of a dampener, as my other subs Baker (not playing at the moment) and Ward-Prowse (also only getting sub appearances) are rather unreliable subs.

In short, any suggestions? Or should I just do an easy straight transfer Chester -> 4mil?
    Thanks 🙂

You don't think Spurs at home are capable of scoring against Chelsea?

Personally, I would get rid of Lamps. Oscar looks like the only Chelsea mid worth having. You have Soldado so you don't need Eriksen really. Swansea have some tasty games coming up now and I think you could do with Michu in there.

Personally I'd leave your defenders this week as all 3 of your starters are good to play and downgrade Ben Arfa and upgrade Lamps to Michu.

Thankyou for your suggestions. H/ever, I was planning to wait for 1 more week before getting Michu in.

Against Arsenal next week, I don't want to jeopardise koscielny's chances at a CS, even though I don't rate Swansea's chances anyway.

Plus, I am unwilling to get rid of HBA at this stage, there really aren't any great options below him as I don't rate players like Moses.

    Re-post for Deadzone discussion;

    Captaining keepers is becoming a real option, especially with these new BPS.Examples;
    If you'd captained Guzan = 28pts
    If you'd captained Boruc = 18pts

Even without a Cleanie, if they've had to make saves you can count on around 8pts for a Captain. No attacking returns of course, but better than 2pts from a forward who blanks/gets subbed off
    Not too shabby, eh?

Risk is a little bit higher, reward is much lower. They can only keep one cs in a game and lady luck can snatch it away at any time no matter how well they and their team are playing. You're realistically looking at around a 9 point ceiling if everything goes to plan. 2 to 4 if it doesn't.
A goal for a striker is worth the same as a cs for a gk. However the best strikers can notch multiple goals and assists against weak teams. Only two if they fail but the ceiling is much higher. A bit less luck involved too imo

Correct of course - but it looks more interesting in weeks like this where there were multi captain choices. Pick the wrong one (Sturridge 4pts, Benteke 2pts) and your keepers 6/8pts minimum suddenly looks appeaing

Also, Guzan's stats are skewed by a penalty save. Pens are random and if that had gone in Guzan loses between 9 and 12 of those pts he got today. Just on one kick of a ball.

As Champ says, the risk is incredibly high and you are really depending on a CS and penalty save to make it worthwhile,

Yes, but would you have captained either of those two away GK's, one of which was playing at Anfield against the then league leaders?

If you really want to test this theory then do it next week and captain your keeper with the away game (assuming its not a £4.0m keeper) and see how you get on.

Ha! Put my money where my mouth is? Ok - I may try it, but I was really just trying to get a discussion going. If I had captained my keeper this week (Migs) I would now have 8pts, which may or may not beat Michu and Walcott today, but which has already beaten Sturridge, HBA and Benteke

    Should he

    B) Be transfered out as its important to have a full squad to pick from

The problem with keeping is that its easy to end up with real problems should a couple of other players go down too.

Another very good positive is having 4.0 and Boruc as my keeper combo. Done me absolutely proud.
Rotating keepers can suuu.ck on it.

Like Baines proved that you have to pay the money for the extra premium points, i'm hoping RVP and Suarez do the same in the coming few weeks. Don't mind Rooney getting a few too.

Hoping that Suarez and RVP to the same in the near future. Wouldn't be surprised if a Suarez hatty within the first two weeks of arrival would happen. You know he's that kind of player.

Don't mind Rooney goals as well, as i love him and a United fan.

With Chester out, I have 1 sub : shock:

    Gw7 can't come quick enough.

Oh, 21 from 4 yesterday. Let's see if I manage to get a green arrow today, I've forgot what one looks like.

Thinking of doing Murner to Clyne and Collins to Wilson for 4pt hit this week, but wondering whether to get rid of Ben Arfa as his fixtures get nasty now.

Not worried about taking hit for defenders at the moment as they seem to be doing the business as far as baps are concerned, but Ben Arfa being downgraded would give me more money to spend on a premium defender as I have no money in the bank now.
