Sergio Aguero’s brace ensures David Moyes has a Manchester derby debut to forget. Stoke’s new Austrian buy arrives on the Fantasy radar, while injuries to Robin Van Persie and Theo Walcott ruffle the feathers and may well prove the catalyst for a selling spree across the Fantasy games…

The Game Changer

Sergio Aguero’s deadly double ensured David Moyes had a debut Manchester derby to forget. While the pre-game buzz surrounded Robin Van Persie’s groin injury withdrawal, the plaudits went the Argentine’s way after he helped steer City to a comprehensive victory at the Etihad.

Having produced a goal and assist in the midweek Champions League win over Viktoria Plzen, Aguero’s form ensured he kept his place as Manuel Pellegrini opted to partner him with Alvaro Negredo and dropped Edin Dzeko to the bench. After a hugely underwhelming second season in Manchester, Aguero is starting to hint at the form that made him such a Fantasy sensation back in 2011/12 – it’s three goals, two assists and six Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points now, with this afternoon’s haul moving him to second in the forward standings.

Aguero has now scored or assisted in three of his four league starts under Pellegrini and with the City boss determined to go on the offensive this term, his side have already racked up 12 goals – five more than any other team bar Arsenal. Given that the only time City have drawn a blank was in Gameweek 4 – when Aguero was omitted from the starting XI – it’s becoming clear that, in spite of his plethora of attacking options, Pellegrini’s chances of picking up the silverware may well lie on the little Argentine’s shoulders.

The Underused

Handed a first start by Mark Hughes at the Emirates earlier today, Marko Arnautovic was initially utilised on the left of the Potters midfield as Matt Etherington made way for the talented Austrian. His superb volley off the woodwork, which led to Geoff Cameron’s consolation, earned the former Werder Bremen man an assist but it was his move to the lone forward role later in the game that will be of particular interest to Fantasy managers.

Hughes’ decision to withdraw Kenwyne Jones allowed Arnautovic to shift up front and perhaps hints at his thinking as he looks to integrate the new boy into his XI. Listed as a midfielder, Arnautovic – coming in at 5.5 in FPL with an ownership of just 0.1% – could be a potential out of position prospect ahead of a run of six enticing games (NOR, ful, WBA, mun, SOU, swa, SUN) in the next seven.

The Selection Poser

After Christian Benteke’s early withdrawal yesterday, the Gameweek went from bad to worse for many this afternoon. Theo Walcott’s late call-off for Arsenal was followed by Robin Van Persie’s omission from United’s trip to the Etihad as a couple of the weekend’s main armband contenders failed to show, forcing many Fantasy managers to rely on the points accrued from cut-price bench fodder.

Certainly, the early prognosis on both Van Persie and Walcott remains optimistic. David Moyes has insisted the Dutchman could be back as soon as the midweek Capital One Cup clash against Liverpool, while Arsene Wenger is hopeful Walcott will only be out for a matter of days.

The issue for Fantasy managers here is whether to ignore the volatile markets and ride out any potential price drops. This season, in particular, has seen significant activity and with both United and Arsenal set for strong schedules, Wayne Rooney and Mesut Ozil offer obvious alternatives to their respective team-mates. Van Persie, with an ownership in excess of 43%, could be set for significant sales if he fails to recover quickly, while Walcott’s 15% ownership – currently the tenth highest for midfielders – is falling since this afternoon’s withdrawal. There’s no doubt the pair, despite indifferent starts, will come good again but as wildcards are wielded frantically and the transfers out rack up, keeping calm amidst the knee-jerking mayhem after a hugely frustrating week like this is proving the ultimate test of patience.

Looking at my score of 218, my rank just inside the top 2 million and position in 15th in my mini-league, nearly 100 points behind the leader, I can safely say that having RVP since the beginning of the year was a calamitous decision and this is the worst start I've ever had to an FPL season.

Wildcard? This is my current squad:

    Boruc / Foster*
    Coleman / Chester* / Collins / Toure / Baker*
Walcott / Ben Arfa / Eriksen / Brady / Morrison
    RVP / Sturridge / Benteke*

The ones with asterisks are serious injury problems. Not sure about RVP and Walcott, whether Morrison will continue starting. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

    Harper, Mignolet
    Zabaleta, Ivanovic, Coleman, Vidic, Chester
Barkley, Ben Arfa, Walcott, Michu, Cowie
    Sturridge, Giroud, Benteke

Wow......just 18 points this weekend. Fell over 700k in rank, and slipped from 4th to 13th in my main ML. What a disaster:

    - Lampard 2 point (C) fail.

    - No Walcott = JWP 1 point from the bench

    - No RVP = Chester 1 point from the bench (plus Chester is now injured for 6 weeks)

    - Vidic zero

    - Benteke injury 1 pointer

    - Burner goal disallowed, plus loses CS in the dying seconds, was already booked so fell to a 1 pointer.

To top it all off......I'm a United fan and we got well and truly spanked.

    Worst game week ever!

Tazri, calm it down a bit please. These type of posts are starting to wind people up. People come on here to give each other advice because they are a helpful bunch. If that is not something you want to be part of then this may not be the website for you.

If you are keen to give good advice and chat about fantasy football without trying to wind people up then welcome aboard, glad to have you around.

it is if you are in a competition. its just like if you tell the opposing team to attack down the wings, which is your weakness, when you are playing against them

Its not quite like that though is it. Even competitive athletes will have discussions about different training regimes. There can be reciprocal relationships in competitive sport. Its like trading ideas

yes but as in schools, telling your friend the right answer and him telling you the answer will help make both of you reach the top, however if everyone does it everyone will be moving to the top together hence making the activity itself pointless.

in that case we are competing against the people who arent paying attention to the game as much and im sure its easy to beat them without help from anyone

But we are the elite so like in schools the smartest people get together and form a study group (it might be said that they are smart because of the study group). Meanwhile everyone else is at a disadvantage because they do not form such groups and are thus limited by their own knowledge.

So yes we will all rise up together, but FFS is only a tiny minority in comparison to all those competing in FPL.

as stated above, the people that actually 'play' the game by logging in every week and thinking of changes are bound to have come across one the fpl advice sites, so we are basically competing against the idle players of the game

here is the defintion of compete
'Strive to gain or win something by defeating or establishing superiority over others who are trying to do the same.'

hence this renders your statement of 'Not everybody competes to get the highest score' contradicting.

Any advice on my 5th midfielder? Budget 4.4. All I am looking for is playing time in order to cover any injuries.

    My team

    Boruc (Marshall)

    Ozil-Oscar-Eriksen-Brady-5TH midfielder
    Lukaku - Rooney - Suarez

Who would you play out of Shaw and Coleman (don't say both!)

I am thinking Shaw more likely to keep a clan sheet!?

Other defenders are Zab, Wilson (& Collins in bench)

I would bench Wilson and Collins out of those 5 this week. If you want to play Wilson, bench Coleman

Got a decent 49pts, but team was devastated, just WCed the week before too.... How come I have so many green arrows despite a poor GW rank of 1.27million?

    WC questions.

Worth keeping Benteke? Trying to make rooms for Giroud , Roo & Lukaku.

Worth keeping HBA? Trying to make room for Ozil, Yaya, Barkley, Oscar & Ramsey to catch price rises.

      Wait for Benteke news.

Do HBA ➡ Ozil / Ramsey. your choice

    Vorm, Stekelenburg
    Coleman, Shaw, Mertesacker, Amorebieta, Zabaleta
Eriksen, Mirallas, Walcott, Ben Arfa, Barkley
    Giroud, Soldado, Benteke

I wouldnt wc only 2 doubts and you may play 4-4-2 easily this week with both benched if their injuries are minor

Noooo....nowhere near...It's a good team actually with decent fixtures coming up...Benteke/Wally watch for the news and maybe even a hit if they are going to be out for a while/going into freefall price wise...

Mirralas + Barkley sounds weird to me.
I'd rather pick only one and (rather barkey) and save £ to pick someone from man U.
You can't possible have no ManU player in your team.

Who would you sell out of this bunch:
    - Erikson
    - Brady
    - Barfa
    - Wally
    - Kim

    - Rvp
    - Giroud
    - Lambert

Since i only have to start 7 from this lot,
A: sell barfa and bench kim?
B: WC so can do rvp > rooney and restucture entire team
C: leave attackers as is and use FT on a defence
