Having rinsed through our Goalkeeper and Defender Watchlist rankings, we now turn to midfield – an area of our Fantasy squads that has, so far, largely disappointed having been overshadowed by outstanding defensive returns and an array of prolific strikers. A certain Swansea asset points the way forward, however, offering the potential of continued returns in the coming weeks, backed by a Arsenal’s consistent Welshman and a pair of North London playmakers.

Michu’s run of three goals in three games, coupled with his rest and Swansea’s Capital One Cup exit, promotes the Spaniard to the very top of our midfield rankngs. Whether deployed as a central attacker, or playing off Wilfried Bony or Alvaro Vazquez, Michu continues to represent the Swans biggest threat and is producing the kind of under-the-hood statistics that saw him fetch 18 goals in his debut season. Following this weekend’s clash with Arsenal, the fixtures could hardly be kinder to Michu and the Swans, with a run of six favourable encounters that seem tailor made to boost his stock still further.

Aaron Ramsey remains difficult to ignore and, given the injury to Theo Walcott that has seen the winger tumble temporarily form the rankings, Ramsey looks to be the obvious replacement in light of his irresistible form. Despite his recent displays, there are concerns that we will see rest and rotation when Arsene Wenger’s injury list clears but, for now, Ramsey’s pitch time looks assured in a team that is flowing with creativity and confidence. The weekend trip to the Liberty will put both to the test with the former Cardiff City man no doubt eager to impress.

Team-mate Mesut Ozil is another candidate to fill the hole left by Walcott’s injury. The German playmaker has adjusted seamlessly to life at the Emirates, helping himself to four assists in two starts to underline his Fantasy potential. The rising price tag is an obstacle, as is the appeal of Olivier Giroud and the continued form of the mid-price Ramsey. Even so, Ozil is a tempting proposition and he sits within our midfield top five as the Gunners look to test their outstanding away form at Swansea, West Brom and Palace over the next four Gameweeks.

Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen is sandwiched between the Gunners assets, providing a suitable route into Andre Villas-Boas’ outfit. While Paulinho and Erik Lamela offer alternatives below and above Eriksen in the price brackets, the Dane offers a middle ground with the potential for goals and assists playing up in support of Tottenham’s lone striker. With Roberto Soldado seemingly struggling to convince Fantasy managers, Eriksen looks to be the current weapon of choice, although Paulinho is certainly a very viable alternative for those looking for coverage of Tottenham’s form and fixtures.

Hatem Ben Arfa completes our top five although his position is severely under threat from the likes of Kevin Mirallas and budget pick Robbie Brady. Ben Arfa blanked in the 3-2 home defeat to Hull and will need to convince over the next two away trips in order to maintain his stock following two outstanding displys against Fulham and Villa. The weekend trip to Everton looks tough for the Frenchman and he’ll come up against Mirallas, a player who has so far disappointed in Fantasy terms. The Belgian now appears to be under severe pressure from Barcelona loanee Gerard Deulofeu, who bewildered Fulham in the Capital One Cup in midweek. Deulofeu’s time will come and Mirallas must now feel pressure to produce but, having linked well with compatriot Romelu Lukaku for the winning goal at Upton Park last time out, we’re backing Mirallas to produce and hold off the challenge from the young Spaniard – for now.

Brady’s goal and assist returns in the Tigers’ win at Newcastle confirmed his potential as a budget asset and has seen him enjoy another price rise this week. With Robert Koren sidelined through injury, Brady’s role at set-plays has been promoted further and with spot-kicks also a factor, he looks an extremely favourable short-term starter for Hull’s back-to-back home encounters with West Ham and Villa.

Liverpool’s Victor Moses is looming and threatening a rise up the rankings once we’ve seen how the return of Luis Suarez impacts his role and potential, while United’s Antonio Valencia is also present, as a means of covering United’s superb run of Old Trafford fixtures over the next three. While the acquisition or Wayne Rooney or Robin van Persie will always be more desirable, Valencia appears to have cemented his starting role and will always be a factor should David Moyes’ side click into attacking form over the next month.

Lower down the rankings, Stoke City’s Marko Arnautovic and West Ham’s Ravel Morrison offer punts in the low-to-mid price bracket. Morrison is a rock bottom option as a bench midfielder with promise but, having netted in his last two outings, he looks set for a continued run of opportunities while both Stewart Downing and Joe Cole remained sidelined. Arnautovic is perhaps a stronger long-term option. The Austrian appears to be pivotal to Mark Hughes’ attacking plans and could eventually be deployed in a central attacking role. Right now he’s exerting his influence from the flank and has earned two assists in his two starts in all competitions. With fixtures in his favour, Arnautovic looks an intriguing differential for those looking to take a risk and free up funds with their Walcott replacement.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Prices drop too quickly in this game. It pressures you to copy the herd and trade the player out instead of rewarding patience. It's stunting diversity.

"Oh no, my player's going to fall by 0.3m this week, so I need to do the same and transfer him out!" 😡

Hey! Just joined the site yesterday, liking the community a lot!

I'm on my WC at the moment. Trying to decide the merits of having both Ramsey and Ozil in the midfield. Both are guaranteed starters on their form (and Ozil's class) and both are good bets to contribute points. Then in the end Ozil costs so much I could swap him for any other midfielder and still have money to spend (if I wanted that is).

Here's my current squad, thoughts peeps?

    Mignolet
    Coleman Clyne Zabaleta
    Oscar Ozil Ramsey Brady
    Suarez Rooney Giroud

    bench: Lewis, Barkley, Wilson, Whittaker

      Hi, welcome!

You also need to bear in mind that you have Giroud up front too; that's an awful lot of faith to have on one team. In light of that, if consider alternatives to Ramsey, even if he might be a good pick in isolation.

very true re: Arsenal players, just seeing Ozil as undroppable atm and wanted to get Suarez in because they have an easy run of matches..hard to beat the value at 6.1 or whatever he is now..possibly swap Ozil for Michu then you think? I have 0 available atm

I'd keep Özil, it looks like he's going to do very well indeed. As has been mentioned below, Ramsey's returns may be unsustainable

Hello Sinik, that's a nice team you've got there. Personally I'd drop Ramsey as 3 Arsenal is a bit too much for my liking. I also think Michu is a better pick than Oscar at the mo. Well I think that swapping Oscar--Michu is just a luxury swap atm..struggle is to drop Ramsey but still keep my team intact..perhaps Zabaleta is worthy a drop? don't like the idea of Ramsey out for HBA (especially with their fixtures)..perhaps I need to give up on the Suarez pipe dream and just put Remy in so I can bring in Michu for Ramsey?

yes buddy, but this is a different team. He's priced at 5.5 and may turn out to be a very good diff option. He can also be an out of position prospect as he can also play as a striker

Stage 1: Enter a team, do nothing else
Stage 2: Make some subs up until Oct or Nov then give up
Stage 3: Play every week or most weeks, making subs on Sat
Stage 4: Seek value in transfers
Stage 5: Plan weeks ahead, replan constantly
Stage X: Be here for the close season 😉

From stage 3 you should be reading FFS and from stage 4, posting

Whats with the big lukaku love affair this week?

Is he nailed on to be a starter?

Sure he played well as an impact sub on Sat but he did bugger all in the COC the other night. Surely playing the full 90mins in that would suggust that Jelavic was being rested for the weekend & lukaku would be benched again.

    Anyone else agree?

Everton play on Monday. Lukaku is clearly the better player, and is a bargain price. I would say there is more of a chance him starting than not, so it's a risk worth taking IMO.

Sorry, didnt realise that they werent playing until Monday so i guess the resting isnt an issue.

Are you guys all jumping on that bandwagon before he goes up tonight then?

Dont get me wrong- i want him in too (as it enables me to get baines) but after just one game as sub & with city coming up it seems like a huge kneejerk. Wouldn't it be better to leave it a few games.

Was hoping his price would stay the same until after the city game!

I have planned to get him in since he moved to Everton, and Benteke getting injured just gave me the catalyst to do so. I'm setting my team up for a few weeks, so I'm not too worried.

He needs game time which is why he started in the cup. If he's supposed to be the best fwd at Chelsea and Everton it amazes me why people think he won't start. Also Everton paid a lot of money for that loan deal, he hasn't come to sit on the bench.

Yes he is but how often do you see people buying players before they've started?

I remember Adebayor's first season at Spurs was brilliant, then the second season he was bought permanently and people bought him being certain he'd start, then he didn't start for the opening 6 -8 weeks.

I know it's not as if they are similar players but I think with players where there are alternatives it's best to see them start a game first.

Just copy-pasting here more cleanly now that I know your guys' formatting:

    Mignolet (Lewis)
    Coleman Clyne Zabaleta (Wilson, Whittaker)
    Oscar Ozil Ramsey Brady (Barkley)
    Suarez Rooney Giroud

0.1 available and on a WC.

..struggle is to drop Ramsey but still keep my team intact..perhaps Zabaleta is worthy of a swap? could potentially do it for Dawson since Spurs have good fixtures until GW12 after getting past Chelsea. don't like the idea of Ramsey out for HBA (especially with their fixtures and his ability to go missing)..perhaps I need to give up on the Suarez pipe dream and just put Remy in so I can bring in Michu for Ramsey? I'm not liking having two Arsenal midfielders and don't want to drop Giroud and as a United fan I've watched Rooney's energetic revival closely and think he's a must-keep.

All actual teams aside, how about this as a topic then. Merits of a cheap defense (with potential for clean sheets with players from clubs like Stoke and Southampton) and all focus on the midfield and forwards or a mix and match?
