Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez make light work of struggling Sunderland, as Brendan Rodgers’ decision to continue with a 3-5-2 formation allows the Reds’ duo the chance to shine:

The Game Changer

A goal and a pair of assists took Daniel Sturridge to the top of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) standings this evening as Liverpool eased to victory in Sunderland’s first league match since the dismissal of Paolo Di Canio.

While the spotlight was on Luis Suarez, his Liverpool team-mate was amongst the points yet again as Sturridge atoned for a rare blank against Southampton last weekend with another handful of Fantasy points. Some were wary that Suarez’ return would diminish Sturridge’s potential but the former Chelsea man showed great awareness to tee up both the Uruguayan’s goals as Liverpool climbed to second.

Priced at 9.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Sturridge – along with Suarez – is set for significant investment over the next few days as the Merseysiders prepare for a home clash with Palace next weekend. While many of the other title contenders now have European commitments to contend with this week, Liverpool can now rest up until the Eagles come calling next Saturday afternoon; a factor that will surely benefit Sturridge as he looks to continue a record that has seen him score in five of the opening six Gameweeks.

The Underused

There was no real surprise that Luis Suarez stole the show on his return to league action earlier today. We handed the Uruguayan the headline act in this week’s Spot the Differential article and he duly delivered with a brace as Liverpool, somewhat significantly, scored more than two goals for the first time this term.

In a season that has mainly proved frustrating for Fantasy managers, Suarez’ instant impact served a reminder of the potential that harvested 23 goals and 10 assists last time round. While fellow big hitters such as Robin Van Persie and Sergio Aguero were protected ahead of Champions League duties, Suarez will benefit from a schedule which has also been lightened by Liverpool’s Capital One Cup exit in midweek – game time looks guaranteed, with rest and rotation unnecessary for Rodgers.

Currently sitting at 10.9 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) with an ownership of just 7%, the bandwagon is set to shift through the gears as Fantasy managers look to find a way to bring Suarez on board as the Reds gear up for a favourable run of fixtures over the next few matches. Indeed, with Palace, Newcastle, West Brom and Fulham in the next five, doubling up on Liverpool’s front two looks a viable tactic for the next few Gameweeks.

The Selection Poser

Brendan Rodgers once again rolled out a 3-5-2 formation for the Merseysiders, continuing with the shape utilised in the midweek Capital One Cup clash against United. With Glen Johnson still injured, Rodgers clearly remains unconvinced over his alternatives at right-back and with a number of centre-halves at his disposal, looks set to retain a three-man backline until Johnson returns to the fold.

This will allow Jose Enrique to continue on the left of the Reds’ five-man midfield, affording the Spaniard an out of position berth for the time being – an injury update issued last week suggested Johnson could be back in a “couple of weeks”, though. Also, the new formation also allows Rodgers to court caution with Daniel Agger after recent injury but with Kolo Toure, Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho all playing today, it remains to be seen just who will get the nod as Agger’s central defensive partner once the Merseysiders are finally injury-free. Enrique’s shift into midfield also allowed Victor Moses a central position behind Sturridge and Suarez though the on-loan midfielder failed to impress in his new role in “the hole”.

In the earlier game, Nathan Redmond missed out through injury for Norwich at Stoke. Having started each of the first five, the former Birmingham man was replaced by Anthony Pilkington at the Britannia and with the latter providing the assist for Jonny Howson’s winner, Chris Hughton has plenty to ponder ahead of next week’s clash against Chelsea, with Redmond’s 4% FPL owners hoping he can force his way back into contention.

Suarez and Sturridge's Record in Liverpool (2012-2013) based on data from transfermarkt.co.uk
    Suarez = 34 Matches (25 Goals - 11 Assists) = 0.74 goals/match and 0.32 assists/match
    Sturridge = 20 Matches (15 Goals - 7 Assists) = 0.75 goals/match and 0.45 assists/match

    # It is feasible to have both players
    # If you are a price sensitive FPL player, the option of Sturridge is feasible
    # If you want a big name player for your squad that offers security, the option of Suarez is a must

Is Nolan -> Hazard for a 4 point hit complete and utter madness this week?

On the face of it, I'd be inclined to agree, however do these circumstances make it the right play?

    1) Nolan has dire fixtures and form, and his stock is crashing. He will drop another 0.2-0.3m before I would sell him next week.
    2) Due to 1), if I don't make the transfer this week then the likes of Hazard and Walcott will then be out of reach as Nolan's replacement.
    3) I could bench Mirallas (mcy away) if making the trade this week
    4) Hazard has (nor, CAR) up next (flat track bully) and I could then switch him to Walcott for (cpl), by which point he should be back and below Hazard's price.
    5) Nolan is a waste of space

Despite you thinking Haz is a flat track bully, he has been very poor this season. Wait until he shows any sign of form before getting. Also, he's been getting pulled off early for Schurlle.

Only once - his minutes have been:

        90, 90, 90, 90, 84, 68 this season.

Haz was a flat-track bully last year and despite scoring badly so far this year, his stats are good and he's had 3 pretty tough fixtures (mun, tot, eve). I think he'll come good.

I don't think it's a good use of your money.

I agree Nolan has to go, ideally this GW, but I don't see Hazard being good value. I reckon Mirallas can match or even outscore Hazard this week with a 4 point head start. Norwich away will be low scoring for Chelsea IMO

Yeah, you could well be right. Chelsea did look very good 2nd half at the w/e with Mata on (until Torres got sent off at least), so I expect them to improve going forwards.

I think Hazard is the best mid to bring in this week below 9.1m (other than Michu, who I already have), and If I wait till next week then I'd only have 8.8m for Nolan's replacement, which puts a bunch of candidates out of reach.

Would you hold tight and suck up the value loss and play Mirallas?

I doubt Nolan will drop more than 0.1m. If you bought him at 7m, he needs two more drops to before you lose value.

I may end up doing a transfer on him personally as I have 2 FTs this week. I wanted to bench him this week and bring Wally in for Norwich or Palace. Since Wally is dropping too, I can afford to wait. Doesn't seem to make sense to use a transfer just to save 0.1m

I got him at 7.1m so the next drop counts unfortunately. He went down 30% yesterday, so I think he will fall again by Wed and then again by Fri/Sat.

For me it's more the knock on effect of missing Hazard (nor,CAR) and then Wally (cry) that is the bigger issue than a 0.2m loss of value. Both are so explosive and could go big across those fixtures.

            Hmmmm

Liverpool had looked pretty horrid in the final third vs Swansea and Southampton and Sturridge has a habit of suddenly disappearing in games. A shelvey back pass gave sturridge a goal, followed by a blank vs Soton. Suarez almost never disappears and is always up for it. Well worth the 1 million more for me

a look at the stats of the last 10 or so that S&S played together will show that the 1.4 million you save by going with studge over suarez is not going to cost you any points. if you've had studge since he was cheaper, that value difference is larger, obviously.

He is the best FPL player in the game.
Not in form and played all 3 int games while Rooney rested. Most people don't see that. If you manage to have a balanced team with RVP, you should be fine. Unless injured or clearly underperforming, he' come good.

I've seen a lot of people looking to bring Hazard in this week and citing his stats as a reason.

Anyone in this camp care to elaborate? As far as I can see, they are average and I wouldn't spend that much money on him

They're not amazing, but they're pretty decent imo. Across all midfielders he is:

Top 15 for total shots, shots in box and shots on target.
      2nd for most chances created.
1st for most touches in final third and most passes received in final third

And bear in mind he's had 3 tough fixtures in his opening six (tot, mun, eve).

You say top 15 for shots but the midfielders have hardly been great this year and top 15 is not good for a player of that price. Top 5 at least is needed.

His created chances stat looks good, a chance created every 38 minutes, which is good for an assist every second game assuming they are good chances.

Taking all that into account, he is not worth the money IMO

Yeah, maybe. He's 7th overall going by the ICT Index, which is reasonable imo.

Do we know anything of Lampard's knock at the end of the Spurs game? He looked in pain and only stayed on because they'd already made 3 subs. If he's out then we can add pens to Hazard's locker too.

If I couldn't decide between two players I'd pick the one who has a lower ownership. But it's merely for the fact to see what teams I'd want to concede. For example I'd want Southampton to concede as I don't have any of their keepers or defenders. But I wouldn't care if West Brom kept a clean sheet

Dunno - If spurs go 1-0 up, both managers will play pretty conservatively. There's a reason spurs have only conceded 2 and won 1-0 quite a lot, and Allardyce would rather keep it 1-0 til 85th minute before going for it.

I've got room in my team to add a premium defender. I've been leaning towards Vertonghen (largely because of Spurs good fixtures) - but the Comparison Tool in the members area massively favours Baines. Now I'm doubting myself.

Yep, I like Baines a lot (and I had him for a lot of last season). I dont need any convincing about his points scoring ability.

Its not that I want a *Spurs* player - what I want a 'set and forget' premium defender. Right at the moment Vertonghen has nice fixtures and would give me a more balanced team than Baines (I already have Coleman and Mirelles) - so I'm really wondering whether Baines is clearly a better option?

Not picking a player cos he might get injured is a bit wishy washy though. Granted some players are injury prone like Sturridge. With a big player like him though I think it's worth the risk and ship him out when he's injured.

    Boruc + Davies/Williams or Vorm + Clyne/Shaw?

Will probably get a combination of the above over the next couple of GWs. Swansea's defensive stats have been poor but I feel that's down to the quality of opponents they've faced. Since preseason we've always known Swansea will have a tough start. But fixtures take a turn for the better around GW8.

Considered that as well, and I might just do it. In that scenario, Boruc + Clyne/Shaw/Fonte? Had Clyne last season and was good value. Set to go with Shaw this season until his injury issues around the start.

Fonte looks like he's racking up the bps and is still good value at 4.8. However, Clyne will garner more attacking pts and has also had bps this season.

Barkley for me. WBA don't score enough. Barkley always looks dangerous and now has a target(lukaku)

        -8,-4 & now -8.
I m reluctant to use Wildcard coz everyweek I feel my team looks near to Wildcarded one with a very few hits bt looks like I m addicted to this habit!

These are problems coming in a pair or two. Do you think u would want to Wildcard for -8?

True story, I almost put him in on my wc because I confused him with the arnautovic that a lot were touting. Stats were good, fixtures put me off.

Not really sure. The top teams will still see cs with the likes of STK, STH, SWN in the mix from time to time.
