Daniel Sturridge moves to the top of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) forward standings after producing a goal and pair of assists against Sunderland. Luis Suarez bags a brace upon his return to league action as the Reds move to second. Elsewhere, a change in tactics helps Norwich bring home the points at the Britannia courtesy of a Jonny Howson strike:

Suarez and Sturridge Tame Black Cats
Back in league action for the first time since April, Luis Suarez wasted no time in racking up the Fantasy returns as Liverpool ensured Sunderland remained rooted to the foot of the table with a 3-1 win. Lining up alongside Daniel Sturridge in a 3-4-1-2 formation, the Uruguayan bagged a brace as the Reds produced more than two goals in a league game for the first time this season – his headline-grabbing act has already seen significant investment as Fantasy managers look to bring the Uruguayan on board ahead of a superb run of games which pits Rodgers’ side against Palace, Newcastle, West Brom and Fulham in the next five Gameweeks.

Sturridge wasn’t to be outdone, though. Atoning for his blank against Southampton last weekend, his haul means he has now scored in five of the first six Gameweeks and with sidekick Suarez now back to wreak havoc, he looks set for a prosperous next few matches. Coming in at 9.6 in FPL to Suarez’ 10.9, Sturridge’s more budget-friendly price makes him an obvious target for those looking to swap out the similarly-priced Roberto Soldado, with owners of the stricken Christian Benteke also targeting the former Chelsea player. Suarez, though, remains a real differential – only 9% currently own the Uruguayan compared to Sturridge’s 32% but yesterday’s display is likely to see plenty more acquire the duo, with some even looking to grab both for their three-man frontlines.

So often panned for a somewhat selfish streak in front of goal, Sturridge admitted Suarez’ positioning for both goals made the decision to pass a straightforward one:

“Luis gives me angles to play in and for me it’s about getting assists as well as scoring. It’s about the team winning games. If someone’s in a better position, you put them in and allow them to score the goal.”

Rodgers Talks Tactics
With Glen Johnson still sidelined, many had assumed Liverpool’s move to a 3-4-1-2 in the midweek cup clash against United was a result of the unconvincing Gameweek 5 home defeat by Southampton. Brendan Rodgers’ decision to rest Jose Enrique that day and field four natural centre-halves in a back-four saw Liverpool lose their unbeaten league record – a shift to a three-man backline, with Enrique on the left of midfield, was rolled out at Old Trafford on Wednesday, with Suarez returning from a 10-match ban to partner Sturridge up top.

After yesterday’s game, however, Rodgers revealed he’s been looking at the new formation as a way to incorporate Suarez and Sturridge up top together. If the Reds boss retains the same shape, then, it could potentially afford Enrique and Johnson the wing-back roles and boost their out of position prospects, while Philippe Coutinho – once fit – would be expected to move into the “the hole†behind the front two:

“We’ve changed the structure of our team a bit to allow us to pass it better – we’ve still got a lot of work to do – but also to fit in with the type of players that we have. Those two (Suarez and Sturridge) will only get better; you see the understanding. They looked very bright today. They have worked a lot in training – it’s not just something that has been dropped in. We looked at 3-4-1-2 towards the end of last season. We did some work on it, looking at Luis coming back, and they have struck up a very good partnership. “

Potters Attacking Woes
The arrival of Mark Hughes may have proved the catalyst for a change in Stoke’s tactical approach but while their play is less blood and thunder this term, the goal-shy problems of seasons gone by remain. The Potters registered the second lowest goal tally in the Premier League last time out with a total of 34 strikes and yesterday’s 1-0 home loss at the hands of Norwich means Hughes’ side have now scored in just one of their three fixtures at the Britannia, with four goals in six Gameweeks overall.

Kenwyne Jones replaced Peter Crouch as Stoke’s lone forward in Gameweek 3 but neither player has scored or assisted in the league all season – given that his side managed a single shot on target all afternoon, courtesy of a long range effort from Steven Nzonzi, Hughes may consider shaking things up after naming an unchanged side from the previous weekend’s loss at Arsenal yesterday. With Fulham and West Brom up next, the short-term schedule is enough to persuade those holding Stoke’s assets to hold for now, though their display against the Canaries will be enough to deter any would-be investors.

After the game, Hughes admitted that while a change in approach will result in the occasional off day, too many of his players simply failed to produce yesterday:

“To be honest, we didn’t see that coming today because we’ve been really good and that’s the most disappointing thing. We talked at the beginning of the season that on occasions there would be days when we wouldn’t get it right and there would be days like we’ve had today. But there’s minimum requirement in terms of what you have do in a game to affect it and that means the vast majority of your players playing at a level that allows you to compete. Unfortunately we didn’t have enough players playing at the right level today.”

Hughton Shifts Shape
Chris Hughton’s side arrived at the Britannia having failed to notch in each of their first two away trips and with Stoke having kept out City in their previous home game, a clean sheet for the hosts looked on the cards. The Canaries boss made a subtle change to his formation, dropping Johan Elmander from the role in “the hole†behind Ricky Van Wolfswinkel and bringing in Alex Tettey to sit in front of the back-four instead. This allowed Robert Snodgrass and Anthony Pilkington (in for the injured Nathan Redmond) to push up on the flanks, with the visitors looking more like a 4-3-3 when in possession, as our members can attest to.

After the game, the Norwich boss was quick to praise match-winner Jonny Howson and also admitted he was happy with the slight alteration to his team’s shape:

“He is a talent. He is one that there is some debate over, and that’s with us as well. What we do know is that he is a talent. He’s a player from midfield who likes to break, so it’s the same with him as it is with Leroy Fer – it’s about getting those right balances. It was really good to get Anthony Pilkington back, a player who we have missed, and overall tactically we got it as well as we could have done.”

Given that Norwich now have back-to-back games against Chelsea and Arsenal, there’d be no surprise if Hughton kept faith with the same formation – in spite of his impressive midweek cup double against Watford, then, new boy Gary Hooper looks likely to warm the bench once again as Hughton looks for a little more resilience. The Canaries boss went on to explain his decision to drop Hooper to the bench and recall Ricky Van Wolfswinkel, after the Dutchman missed out with a toe injury in midweek:

“Yes, Gary was very much in my thoughts. I really had to give that one some serious consideration because I wanted to be positive, in whichever way it was we set up. In the end I felt we could get more joy from having a bit more possession and breaking from midfield, and that is how it proved. We know Ricky is a goalscorer but sometimes it takes time. He is the type of player who needs help from his team mates to create chances. What you can’t fault with him is his work-rate for the team. We have to give him enough decent service to score goals, but the other side of his game and his work for the team is excellent.”

How many are you expecting them to score ? If Lambert scores one which is highly likely vs Swansea considering he is on pens you are going to need a monster haul to claw back a - 8 pt hit. Also you could easily get the wrong player. Sit tight take no hit and pray is the best advice I can give you.

Giroud and Rooney have got decent fixtures this weekend. I don't rate West Brom, and Man U won't be this awful all season.

Its tempting to want Liverpool cover with their next 2 games, but now sure you will make -8 back.

Evertons fixtures are pretty good after the Tottenham game and Lukaku's price might have risen considerably by then. This is the guy who scored 3 against Utd off the bench last year so he's fairly fixture proof too. Just some more things to consider.

The 21-year-old is then due to visit a specialist about the condition, with surgery provisionally scheduled for next week during the international window.

I'm struggling to field 11 players so what's my move?
    Boruc (Harper)
    Baines, Whittaker, Chester, Collins, Chambers
Brady, Michu, Ozil, Mirallas, Ward Prowse
    Sturridge, Giroud, Rooney

2.2m in bank and have played wildcard

I have four defenders and Ward Prowse not starting. Seems like I should upgrade a defender. Or maybe two and take a hit? But that seems a waste?

I have the exact money to go Chester ----> Enrique

Or I could go Terry at 6.1

Or should I take a cheaper option and save some money? It's three into four for Toure, Agger, Sakho and Skrtel so I don't want to pick the wrong one and miss out. There is also Wilson at Stoke.

Alternatively is it time to just bit the bullet and go Ward Prowse ---> Ramsey

Entering the Mignolet vs. Boruc debate.

Almost every season, the MID and FRW will be where you make the most points, and bar a heavy hitting defender like Baines, DEF and GK is where you will have to find the best value.

While Mignolet and Liverpool will most likely get more clean sheets and points than Southampton on the season as a whole, you will see that already now, that Boruc has passed the LFC goalie in Value.

So when you make that extra (currently) 1.2m investment to have Mignolet over Boruc, think twice about whether or not that money could instead be used to, say, help upgrade Soldado to Suarez.

I'd probably get Boruc if I had a WC but not spending a transfer on it.

Also if Liverpool do switch to 3-4-1-2 then Johnson or Enrique could be fantastic value and better than Mignolet.

There is no real debate, Mignolet is the better long term option.

Southampton had the easiest 11 fixtures, so they were expected to be doing well at this stage.

      Then...

Fair argument, but you must be forgetting that Boruc doesn't play every game: you rotate him for the difficult fixtures.

So to say it's not a debate, is a faulty evaluation imo.

Despite the great form of Boruc I am still sceptical if he can maintain this, so people who got migs at the start I would not switch. If you getting now than Boruc for sure.

One think you miss out is that this year DEFs will be 100% the best value players.

Value in GK for sure as I think they are the most worthless assets this year, as there wont be many shutouts with loads of saves for them to see the baps. I have gone for Boruc and a 4mil but only cause I have horrible team value, Id prefer to have someone on the bench just in case.
And my def for an example contains 3 players over 5.9 mil and one 4.5-5 mil, I just think the baps system has made defenders big hitters who will outscore most midpriced mids this season. So there is need to spend on your backline, less so on your keepers as they have not changed that much.

    Vertonghen vs Walker?

Admittedly i have not watched many tottenham games but why does everyone have a boner for vertonghen over walker? Both have got the almost the same amount of bonus and points over the first 6 games without scoring or assisting and, as FFS members will know, the stats are staggeringly in walkers favor!!

Only hazard, michu and ozil have more key passes than Walker. While Vert has no key passes to his name.

I think it might be a case of reputation over current form. He scored 5 goals last season, and had 8 the season before (in an easier league, but shows his attacking attitude). But you're right, he doesn't seem to be doing a lot of shooting so far this season.

This is the first week I've even seen Vertonghen crossing the half way line, he's playing very differently to last year. I think he was happier to follow Bale forward knowing he wouldn't lose the ball often. Saying that I think I'm going to stick with him for now and swap to Baines if he stays as deep as he has been.

Good crowd on now so thought i'd try and get a view on my cunning plan...

    Defence

    Coleman Toure Walker Baines 4.0
Everton have the best home defensive record by miles stretching back to GW30 last season...and obviously tidy away from home as well...Baines Walker and Coleman are three of the best attacking full backs in the game...Liverpool and Everton rotate perfectly (obviously)..

    So

Coleman Walker Baines for Everton at home

Toure Walker Baines for Everton away

That gives CPL HULL WBA TOT/arse FUL for the rotating Toure/Coleman and WHAM avl HULL eve NEW for the constant Walker

Not really ideal having two Everton full backs and nor is having a 5.0 defender on the bench each week...but it's a plan..and the fixtures look good...any thoughts?

Yeah it's costly so i'm not adverse to going Walker > Davies for equally good fixtures..

I have tried home/away rotation in the past and it never worked for me.

Sunderland and Newcastle rotation of keepers and defenders was my big hope but it doesn't often work in my experience.

It does look a bit expensive to me.

A better way to do it maybe to go...

Baines (who plays every match) Coleman Enrique Clyne BTurner (the last 2 are examples of cheap defenders and could be anyone).

Toure offers no attacking threat and is a rotation risk. So I think Enrique is the better option but costs more.

So lose Walker and play Baines - Enrique - Coleman most weeks.

When Liverpool or Everton have a really tough game you don't fancy then in come Clyne or BTurner as cover.

This backline is quite a bit cheaper and I think offers a more attacking threat.

yeah brill..Toure is best option until Johnson returns though and he will be about 0.3/0.4 cheaper than Enrique...so i have my eye on that..As above..i'm not adverse to cutting the cost of it by another attacking full back other than Walker...Davies would be my first pick as i already have Boruc and doubling up on both Southamton and Everton just sounds wrong...

In that case I would work towards

Baines- Coleman - Toure - Davies- BTurner

and then swap Toure to Johnson.

I think that is a great defence.

I was looking at a similar plan!

Playing 2 everton defenders one week and Liverpool/Tottenham the next.

With Sturridge/lambert/giroud, along with Brady & Ramsey all saving me heaps of cash...I have £5+ in the bank and I still got 69 points this week. Why not spend it on defence, seems to be working so far this season.

Haven't bit the bullet yet, but this week could be the one!

The thing with the Everton/Spurs/Liverpool thing is that Walker/Baines in paticular and Coleman/Johnson to a lesser degree (not by much) are near as damn it Midfielders...which sort of takes it above and beyond the Newcastle/Sunderland rotation in Demel'god's comment...

Nah, really, if I could pick now I'd get Walker.

Wooahh there! That would be a move too far for me....but could be a great move if they carry on assisting each other.

I'm sticking with Rooney...but if gets injured I guess suarez would be the best replacement

the difference is Suarez can have horrible weeks. Where he just can't seem to score and ends up getting frustrated and getting booked.

I have Sturridge and as long as he stays fit I think he is the safer option for now.

I'm fine with it. If I wanted to get both I would have to take a hit and I would have to lose either Giroud or Soldado. I reckon both of them will do really well in the coming 2-3 GWs, so it makes no sense.

Already could not this week, but Sturridge stats worry me a bit in the long term. Only 1 shot and 2 key passes this GW all converting into fantasy points, and he had bad stats vs United too Suarez seems to be hogging all the shots.
