Back after a five-week break, Granville and I have squeezed in two holidays, two wildcards, an engagement (certainly not to each other), a dose of man flu and a near-on leg amputation. Packed, I tell thee.

The other highlight has been the steady and consistent decline of my Fantasy season, giving my co-host Granville plenty of ammunition. Reclined in his armchair, leg braced like James Stewart, the stricken Mancunian leaves his Rear Window to investigate the brutal murder of my fantasy team.

Once the taunting dies down, we manage to tackle the old regulars: bandwagons are assessed, the weekend is previewed and the ScoutCast team gets some love on its way to outscoring my lineup for a fifth week running. Sigh.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

When Brady is back is rotating Brady - Barkley - Whittingham madness?

Would play 2/3 each week, with Ozil and Michu my big hitting mids.

I like your thinking, have the same budget mids myself, only trouble is GW8, after that you have a decent pick of players each week.

Could also allow a 4-3-3 OR 3-4-3 each week (depending on fixtures)

        Evra, Zab, Terry, Dawson, Clyne
        Ozil, Michu, Brady, Barkley, Whitts

        Mental.

I had a similar thought and look at my team now:

          terry enrique baines evra coleman
          michu ramsey barkley arnautovic ravel
          sturridge suarez giroud

          2.2 mil in bank!

          Mine is more 433/ 523!

Not really. It seems to be what quite alot of people are doing.

but, personally, I dont like to have more than 1 or 2 cheap mids, and have 3 big hitting mids if you can count Eriksen as one too.

Are you looking to upgrade your defence or attack with this plan?

the argument of always playing attacker over defender may be problematic aligned with your plan to field a 4-3-3!

I would still play 343 99% of the time, just the odd weeks where 2/3 mids have crappy fixtures and defenders have solid ones, I can field a 433.

2 Prems, 3 quality budgets looks like a good squad structure currently with the lack of mid price midfield options. Considering something similar myself once the Ramsey train goes off the rails. Whittingham feels the most lightweight of the 3, maybe Amalfatino will maintain his form.

    Repost from earlier today
With Mirallas 50/50 and Rooney a slight doubt my team looking a bit thin on the ground and not too keen playing Ward at Liverpool so I am feeling a hit is justified
    Mig (Boruc)
    Ivan, Mert, Shaw (Ward, Chester*)
    Erik, Ramsey, Kim, Mirallas* (Brady*)
    Rooney*, Suarez, Sturridge
    0FT, $3.6m

I've narrowed it down to 2 options
    a) Mirallas > Michu (sot, SUN)
    Continue to play 3-4-3.
Next week I plan to bring in Barkley > Kim / Brady so I will need to play Shaw at Man Utd

    b) Chester > Walker (WHM, avl)
Switch to 4-3-3 this week with Mirallas and Brady on the bench
Next week I plan to bring in Barkley > Kim / Brady so will revert to 3-4-3

    Thoughts?

First thought was to remove Kim and Mirallas (although wait to see if he plays).

Michu appeals to me as you can then bring someone in who will have great fixtures for the next 5-6 weeks. Pity you can't swap Eriksen for him as he's underperforming imo.

I keep changing my mind as I think Walker will be the better move for the next 2 gameweeks but maybe Michu longer term. I can still swap Erik > Michu but probably wouldn't until after Spurs play Hull which means missing Michu (SUN, WHM)

Why Walker when Dawson is 5 mill? Dawson was rested last night which suggests he should start for Spuds in the league games. Not sure Walker's attacking output is that great when you consider his average position.

Its based on what I look for in a defender which is clean sheet + attacking potential. Not looked at stats but watched Spurs last 3 games and against weaker teams Walker is constantly roaming down the wing and getting involved, although this has been the case for a couple of seasons so maybe he will never convert to regular attacking points.. Dawson has absolutely minimal threat and at greater (albeit still slight) risk of rotation to Chichres

Scoring defenders are a bit of a myth, sadly. Baines is about the only one that goes against the grain. Most "scoring" defenders average a goal evry 8-10 games so there isn't any real value there particularly when the money could be put to better use.

As Chris Glover says, "Look for the cheapest way into a defence."

I think Evra goes against the grain as well.

                Last season:
                Evra 4g 6a ........152pts
                Baines 5g 7a.... 177pts

That's only 4ppg though. Probably want greater returns for an expensive defender.

To be realistic you never own a defender the whole season. You gotta play the fixtures.

Eriksen not really underperforming.. the only game he did not look gr8 in was vs Chelsea and they dont have just one tough fixture in the next 5. expect Eriksen to step up his game even more(most key passes per game apart from Ozil already and he's got a mean shot and he plays in the same average position as soldado)

Hey Sports guy.. Tottenham's fixtures are decpetively bad for Clean sheets.. While WHM, HULL, NEW look primed for CS's.. avl(Benteke back) eve mci MANU are prob the worst games possible. that's 3 chances in the next 7. imo Swansea may keep more CS's in those(though tottenham have been tight) or Terry. Just a thought.
      If going ahead -
No issues last night but you might as well wait for the press conference in 8 hours.

I'm actually only looking at the next three, which look great - unless benteke comes back which I'm still skeptic about - but still three of the next 5 are home games to hull newc and WHU - hard to think of better three home games.
Other option is vidic but united in disarray.

I was debating Walker vs Terry all week and finally decided to disect their fixtures. Could be a case of overthinking 🙂 .. Get him. He's a gr8 option. With defenders i tend to think long term though as i dont like shiftin em out. Can see you gettin a lot of points from him over the next 5 so go ahead.. Dont get vidic imo. Wait until manu hit some form defensively and offensively b4 doing so

I have to get SOMEONE with my defence of zab toure m turner Reid Chester...
WHU have horrid fixtures so reid out, I have boruc and cech (who will be worm after the break) so basically it's walker or vidic, unless I go stoke which I don't trust.

    Rio Nasty Colo
    Michu Ramsey Whittingham Eriksen
    Rooney Sturridge (c) Giroud

My defence is thin. Rio rotation? Nasty rotation? Colo... meh. Rooney injury? I need a bigger plan to improve. 3.2 in the kitty but 1ft used. Care to assist?

Can see Cardiff scoring with the way Newcastle playin so Terry will need a CS vs norwich. CAn see that happening with baps. dont expect profit but you should cover your hit and go into the internationals with one less problem. I swapped collins for him for a hit so it was an easier decision though.. Please dont hunt me down if it all goes tits up

Do any of you guys think of fixtures separately in terms of defence/ attack?

Examples: West ham at home - Amazing for a defender. Good/Average for an attacker - they don't concede many away

Swansea away - Pretty good for an attacker, but terrible for a defender

    etc. etc.

I think this is something the typical fixture analysis lacks.

Specific example. Manchester united's next three:

    sunderland (a)
    saints(h)
    stoke(h)

Although sunderland and stoke have weakened defensively this season, you'd typically say this is better for defenders than attackers. I would anyway.

Yes for the suarez deal this week. Do it. There is a chance suarez could get the highest score of the whole season this gameweek and that's not even an exaggeration. If you don't take that hit you could regret it big time.

The difference between ourselves and the casuals comes down to this:

    Casuals chase last weeks points.

We chase the next 3+ fixtures points.

Planning as opposed to hoping. Would you say thats a fair assessment?

Yes and no. Have to admit I've certainly been lured into chasing individual players 'cause of their past weeks points. And convinced myself that their fixs are probably decent enough. Still, usually try to make individual decisions focused on the fixtures to come considering the players form.

Actually regarding Ramsey. It was a hard call to pick him up this week, even if his fixs are decent. Just the fact i'm ever so late on the train made me want to look elsewhere. Swallowed my pride though and got on board.

There are a lot of ways to think about the game longterm whether it is fixtures, value for money, stats, etc.

I'd agree the main thing is not simply chasing last week's points and looking beyond 1 gw. Saying that, I brought in ramsey and suarez this week!

We are massively guilty of chasing last weeks points. Take Baines for example, he scores 2 goals and for one week there's a massive clamour to get him in. He doesn't score the next week and it all dies down again. It's not like its a huge surprise he can score from free kicks but the bandwAgons roll regardless.

I think shots in the box is a pretty good stat actually, since outside the box even on target is likely to be saved.

Paulinho should do well and should certainly justify his price IMO.

Having watched VM's link about Eriksen above i'm even more convinced he'll do well for me. One of the best two footed players i've seen in a long while. And if Townsend/Walker could make more runs up to the middle, Eriksen could certainly pick them up between defenders. Brilliant control and passing skills. Trust him!

Who to play from this lot? At the moment i've got:

    Migs (Lewis)
    Vert Vidic Burner (Clyne) (Coleman)
    Michu Oscar Moses Ramsey (Kasami)
    Suarez Giroud Lukaku

Bench order is: Clyne, Kasami, Coleman

Hard to bench Clyne but Soton tend to concede more at home don't they. Anyone disagree?

The Barkley issue is rotation. If there is for example 30 percent chance every game he will start on the bench, then his scores will be 30 percent lower.

Who else here plays for entertainment? Obviously i want points but i tend to favor being entertained too(that is what this game is for after all)
    Symptoms
    1. In a 50-50 between attackers that i want i tend to bring in the one playing on Monday night so that i have a game to look forward to after work
    2. Tend to captain a player from a game i can watch rather than a game i'm stuck at work for/a damn wedding in wedding season
    3. Spread my players out over as many teams as possible.. not cause of coverage(the word thrown around here).. but since it gives me more matches to have some stake in. A boring Norwich - Stoke encounter can turn into a nerve wrecking Snodgrass vs Shawcross battle.
    4. Get as many players who are not in my ML and ignore the ones who everyone has in there just so i dont have to discount their points as "meh.. everyone got them". For eg Eriksen in this week

Sure there are more i cant think off. Course i do double up on good teams with form and fixture here and there as i do aim to keep my top 10k target of the season every season, but there are fun ways to do it

I try my best points wise. I support Newcastle, and I've no Newcastle players in my team. yet I would rather see them win every game. It just makes the dull makes better, like you say Stoke v Norwich. it's also good banter with makes. It's hard to have proper banter with them unless your team is facing theirs, which doesn't happen too often. (Most of my mates are either Utd Liverpool or Arsenal fans)
