While our defensive picks from last week let us down, those who went with any of the strikers we put forward would have seen handsome profit. Luis Suarez and Romelu Lukaku ran riot, more than justifying their PlayON price tags, and helping a host of Fantasy managers to a share of the prize pots on offer.

This weekend, it’s all about Liverpool’s potential, with a handsome home win and clean sheet expected at Anfield against Crystal Palace. Investment in Brendan Rodgers’ side is going to cost you, which is where we can help out with our selection of player picks that help reserve the funds for those big hitters.

If you’re new to PlayON, read this season’s introduction article for more information. If you’re already a seasoned player, read on for our selection of early weekend targets…

Gameweek 7 Picks

Goalkeeper – David Marshall
Having selected the Cardiff stopper for last weekend’s trip to Fulham, we’re going to stick with the Scot in goal for the forthcoming Gameweek. At 8.0m, there are few keepers around that come in cheaper (although we were briefly tempted by Sunderland’s Kieran Westwood at 6.9m) and Marshall’s shot stopping should be given every opportunity to bring in the points when the Bluebirds face off with Newcastle on Saturday. Alan Pardew’s side rallied at Goodison on Monday night and will carry some threat but we’re backing Marshall to provide a stubborn last line of defence.

Defender – Antonio Luna
The Spanish left-back is an unfashionable pick but, at just 8.3m, looks a bargain at the back in a week where heavy investment in the Spurs and Liverpool defences looks essential. The Villa man will travel to Hull City to face a Tigers side without the creative influence of both Robert Koren and Robbie Brady and that could help Paul Lambert’s outfit secure only their second clean sheet of the season. Villa are more effective going forward on their travels and, if Lambert puts out a 3-5-2 once again, Luna will be deployed as left wing-back and offer us some attacking potential.

Midfielder – Juan Mata
Admittedly, this is without doubt a punt. Arguably, Mata is far from certain to earn a start for Chelsea’s trip to Carrow Road but, with a price hovering at just 7.3m in PlayON this week, we think that this could be a gamble worth taking. We’d expect Mata to get some minutes and, having earned 650 points from just a second-half appearance last weekend, we see some value in this punt. If he starts against the Canaries, there’s little doubt that the Spanish playmaker will be hugely influential and that could see him emerge as a true bargain in our PlayON weekends.

Forward – Dimitar Berbatov
There’s no getting away from the fact that a Liverpool striker looks essential at home to Crystal Palace this weekend and, at 10.8m, Luis Suarez again looks a shoo-in. To partner him, we suggest Chelsea’s Samuel Eto’o as an option, priced just under that fee at 10.7m. While he looks likely to start against Norwich at Carrow Road, 79 Champions League minutes on Tuesday may prompt Jose Mourinho to look elsewhere, perhaps to Demba Ba. For that reason, we finally opted for Fulham’s Dimitar Berbatov. The Bulgarian is a certain starter at home to Stoke City and with Martin Jol under pressure to earn a precious three points, we finally see things clicking, with Berbatov coming good to more than justify a kind 9.7m PlayON price tag.

How To Play

PlayON is weekly Fantasy football so you can dip in and out of playing throughout the season. Once your starting XI is built (you can keep changing your team right up to 2 hours before the first kick-off – 10.45 on Sat morning), you can compete for cash. Entering a multiplayer game for a set stake, you’ll have a chance of winning your share of the pot should you finish high enough in the rankings.

Similarly, you can challenge other players to one-on-one games, selecting the amount at stake. The likes of Robbie Fowler, Les Ferdinand and OptaJoe are all playing the game and are there to be challenged for free or for £1. The Fantasy Football Scout team is also available to be challenged and has a 62% win rate to this point.

Free Entry, £100 Pot

In addition to guaranteeing a £500 pot this week, PlayON is also running a free entry multiplayer game with a £100 pot so your friends can try PlayON for free. Plus, for every 250 people that enter, PlayON will add an extra £50 to the pot so it’s a great opportunity for people who haven’t tried the game out yet to give it a go for free.

The Fantasy Football Scout Game

We’ve also got a £2 multiplayer game, dedicated to our community, which is now open and the prize pot is building.

Challenge Your Mates

You can also set up your own multiplayer games with your mates to play for free bragging rights or for cash. Create your own game at www.playon.co.uk.

Finally, a reminder that we have published a strategy guide, offering some tips for getting the most from your PlayON lineup, right here.

You have to be over 18 to enter cash games at PlayON. If you do wager some cash, please remember to gamble responsibly. PlayON is licensed and regulated by the UK Gambling Commission.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Some of you may have responded to the poll I posted here over the last few days on Team Value, Score and WC usage. I also polled the reddit /r/FantasyPL community to generate a larger sample set. I've now collated the data, and instead of another long wordy post I've tried to get the main points in an infographic. I'm neither an artist nor a statistician, so please forgive me on both accounts.

The infographic can be accessed here: http://i.imgur.com/rApl5E7.png

For those interested in the raw data, the FFS responses are here: http://goo.gl/Ob5MRK and the reddit/r/FantasyPL responses are here: http://goo.gl/QpQxwo

I haven't drawn a huge amount of conclusions, and it's difficult to separate correlation and causation, but I think the trends so far are interesting reading. Thanks for taking part or just taking a look.

Thanks, was looking forward to the results of these. It's interesting and it just builds on the fact that people WC when they need to due to team being in trouble (why people with WC available has more points than people who have used WC) and to get in on price rises.

The way I look at it, it enhances the fact that there is no "perfect time" to WC... it all depends on tons of factors.

I'd play Clyne over Burner, Southampton have very good odds of a CS this weekend and the stats back that up, they've conceded very few chances and are especially strong at home. The rest looks good, not sure who your VC is but I'd pick Giroud since we still don't know 100% about Rooney.

Thanks Dogba. That was my original plan before some people convinced me to go Burner. Southampton do seem a far better defensive unit and the RMT computer has Clyne slightly higher than Burner. Agreed with an Arsenal vc but might go Ozil.

Ozil is fine IMO, he's in great form as well. I was just making sure you didn't have Rooney as VC, we've seen too many late injuries already this season so you never know when VC is gonna kick in.

Mmm, I'd play Barkley to be honest - good policy to play a mid over a def for one and secondly Barkley and Lukaku look strong enough to damage City. Especially with a low in confidence Hart between the sticks

Respectfully I disagree with letting who you play affect the rest of your team, i.e don't play Clyne because you have Michu. Judge each player individually.

I mean play Michu or not is an easy choice, it's Michu! Clyne on the other hand, has the exact same chance to get a CS whether -you- have Michu in your team or not. So it shouldn't matter at all in your decision-making.

I see our point, but you're limiting your potential upside if you have too many players playing against each other. The guy who won the FPL last year mentioned it in his article he had - very interesting read.

I agree that you are limiting your upside, BUT you are maximizing your "probable score" from a statistical viewpoint. Mathematically it makes no sense to let it affect your decision making.

Whilst true...it's also very tempting to want to maximise your points. In this example, Michu goal and a Cardiff CS scores higher than both

            Michu Goal, Clyne 2 pointer
            and
            Michu 2 pointer, Clyne CS

That's exactly why it shouldn't affect you, to maximize your score. I see where you are coming from, the "roof" of your total points might be lower, but at the same time if Clyne has a better chance of a CS than Burner you are setting your team up to (statistically) get less points. Michu or no Michu makes no difference.

I'd go C. Turner *and* Faye aren't good enough rotations for me - I'd always feel safer playing Clyne or Faye if needed. Terry Daws and Merts are a pretty solid 3 to have.

Why pick Faye on a WC? Feels short-sighted, I think BTurner is the only cheap option worth considering.

I'd go for B with BTurner instead of Faye, if you can afford it. If not, I'd look at ways to afford it. Saves an FT down the line and I think Cardiff are a better team than Hull + BTurner has some goal threat.

Also I'd go Chico for Swansea cover, but I'm pretty conservative and I'd rather have the added security of starts and bonus points than the potential explosiveness of Davies.

Thanks, tend to think Chico is injury prone and like the a yellow card, so preferred Davies for some good fixtures. Used to have Chester and got a few cleanies with him so was looking to replace, but may go Turner as you suggest.

With impact injuries it normally won't get worse through playing, unlike strain injuries. So either he's ok to play or he isn't - he won't be rested for precautionary measures.

I have Coleman, Vidic and Kosc (with Chester out).

Problem is if I go Dawson, I tie up funds I want to use to get Michu.

            Wilson is certainly an option.

Yeah Wilson is a good option, I wouldn't go Dawson as tempting as it is, you will want the funds elsewhere afterwards.

In most liklihood, you'll rarely pick Clyne or Wilson with those main 3, so it's going to be pot luck when you play them anyway?

obviously fixtures play a part, but the Soton defence is currently one of the most successful in the league. They will mostly do well, in the same way that you would risk playing a fixture proof striker (like Benteke) against anyone. Stoke on the other hand have looked ropey lately

Bit of advice please, have Rooney, Mirallas, Mbiwa all doubts and Chester out.

Only need one of the 3 to play to be okay.

Is it worth it in this instance to take a -4 on Mbiwa/Chester to ensure I have backup, as will be good long term aswell. Have £0.9m on replacement.

        Team is currently

        Marshall
        Vertonghen, Toure, Mbiwa
        Michu, Mirallas, Moses, Arnautovic

Hahaha 😆 That's coming right up.

"Rooney & Michu/Özil -> RVP and Ramsey for -8?" with 4 dead players on the bench.

Rooney to Sturridge(c) this week for free is a decent move if I have no Liverpool coverage this week?

Reasoning is question marks over Rooney's playing time and reckon Liverpool will run riot.

As things stand now, I think I'd do this transfer. I feel there's a higher risk of LFC running riot than MUFC doing so.

Keep or sell HBA? His price will drop tonight.
This will be -4 hit. Who to get?

        A) Cabaye
        B) Whittingham
        C) Barkley
        D) Amalfitano

2 players I want to ship... Ben Arfa & Collins.

Only 0.1 in the bank and want a Swansea defender. Not keen on doing a hit this week, propose doing Collins > Chico / Davies / Williams and Ben Arfa > xxxx in the international break. Will lose 0.1 on HBA tonight by holding him.

Would HBA owners keeping him play Whittingham instead this week and take the loss in value? Really no mids out there in his bracket that I fancy this week... possibly Ramsey but I'm dead agaisnt that band wagon!

Think it depends on how much you need that 0.1m. I'm probably going to transfer him out tonight for Ramsey, which allows me to get Michu in for Moses next week. I'll take a 4 point hit but otherwise that 0.1 loss means I cant make the move next week....not happy about it though!
